During a lightning strike to ground or structure nearby, currents are induced in all conducting structures including tall towers. As compared to the case of a direct strike, these induced currents will be of much lower amplitude, however, appear more frequently. A quantitative knowledge on these induced currents will be of interest to instrumented and communication towers. A preliminary analysis on the characteristics of the induced currents was reported in an earlier work 1], which employed simplifications by neglecting the induced charge on the tower and also the contribution from the upward connecting leader. This work aims to make further progress by considering all the essential aspects in ascertaining the induced currents. For determining the field produced by the developing return stroke, a macro-physical model for the return stroke is employed and for the evaluation of the induced currents, an in-house time domain numerical electromagnetic code along with suitable modifications for incorporating the dynamics of upward leader is employed.

UHV power transmission lines have high probability of shielding failure due to their higher height, larger exposure area and high operating voltage. Lightning upward leader inception and propagation is an integral part of lightning shielding failure analysis and need to be studied in detail. In this paper a model for lightning attachment has been proposed based on the present knowledge of lightning physics. Leader inception is modeled based on the corona charge present near the conductor region and the propagation model is based on the correlation between the lightning induced voltage on the conductor and the drop along the upward leader channel. The inception model developed is compared with previous inception models and the results obtained using the present and previous models are comparable. Lightning striking distances (final jump) for various return stroke current were computed for different conductor heights. The computed striking distance values showed good correlation with the values calculated using the equation proposed by the IEEE working group for the applicable conductor heights of up to 8 m. The model is applied to a 1200 kV AC power transmission line and inception of the upward leader is analyzed for this configuration.

Availability of land for conventional air-insulated substations is becoming increasingly difficult not only in urban but also in semiurban areas. When the land made available is highly uneven, the associated technoeconomic factors favors the erection of substations on a steplike-formed ground surface and such constructions are in service for more than ten years in some parts of southern India. Noting that the literature on the performance of ground grids in such a construction is rather scarce, the present work was taken up. Evaluation of the performance of earthing elements in steplike ground forms the main goal of the present work. For the numerical evaluation, a suitable boundary-based methodology is employed. This method retains the classical Galerkin approach for the conductors, while the interfaces are replaced by equivalent fictitious surface sources defined over unstructured mesh. Details of the implementation of this numerical method, along with special measures to minimize the computation, are presented. The performance of basic earthing elements, such as the driven rod, counterpoise, and simple grids buried in steplike ground, are analyzed and compared with that for the case with uniform soil surface. It is shown that more than the earthing resistances, the step potentials can get significantly affected.

Low-power electronic devices used in digital telecom exchanges are vulnerable to surge voltages and currents primarily originating from natural lightning or due to the direct interactions between electric power and telecommunication lines, etc., causing the earth/ground potential rise, neutral potential rise, and faults in the system. The fault currents may flow directly to telecom lines or through the equipment to the customer's premises, causing adequate damage to the equipment and personnel safety. In wireline applications, analog or digital, central office, exchanges, and subscriber sides have to be protected. Decisive protection and protective methods have to be employed for proper functioning of the equipment under overvoltage/overcurrent conditions. Current investigation reports some interesting results obtained on the recently developed high-voltage high-current protection cards used in digital telecom exchanges. The performances of protection cards both for the ring wave and hybrid wave surges are evaluated and presented. The surge generators required for the investigation are developed and fabricated in house as per the relevant telecom standards.

In this study, the fine-scale structure of the diurnal variability of ground-based lightning is systematically compared with satellite-based rain. At the outset, it is shown that tropical variability of lightning exhibits a prominent diurnal mode, much like rain. A comparison of the geographical distribution of the timing of the diurnal maximum shows that there is very good agreement between the two observables over continental and coastal regions throughout the tropics. Following this global tropical comparison, we focus on two regions, Borneo and equatorial South America, both of which show the interplay between oceanward and landward propagations of the phase of the diurnal maximum. Over Borneo, both rain and lightning clearly show a climatological cycle of ``breathing in'' (afternoon to early morning) and ``breathing out'' (morning to early afternoon). Over the equatorial east coast of South America, landward propagation is noticed in rain and lightning from early afternoon to early morning. Along the Pacific coast of South America, both rain and lightning show oceanward propagation. Though qualitatively consistent, over both regions the propagation is seen to extend further in rainfall. Additionally, given that lightning highlights vigorous convection, the timing of its diurnal maximum often precedes that of rainfall in the convective life cycle. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. Length scale-down (LS) model tests have been traditionally employed for laboratory studies on aeolian vibration of transmission line conductors. The span adopted is normally 30 m and is recommended by the relevant Indian, as well as other, standards. The traditionally adopted length of the LS model is reexamined herein to establish the rationale behind the choice. Based on the theoretical studies discussed, certain guidelines for the choice of model span of conductor are emphasized. In addition, the adequacy of the LS span as a tool for predicting the performance of the full span is reestablished.

The frequency-dependent response of a pinned charge density wave is considered in terms of forced vibration of an oscillator held in an anharmonic well. It is shown that the effective pinning-frequency can be reduced by applying a d.c. field. If a strong a.c. field, superposed on a d.c. field is applied on such a system “jumps” can be observed in the frequency dependent response of the system. The conditions at which these “jumps” occur are investigated with reference to NbSe3. The possibility of observing such phenomena in other systems like superionic conductors, non-linear dielectrics like ferroelectrics is pointed out. The characteristics are expressed in terms of some “scaled variables” — in terms of which the characteristics show a universal behaviour.

An atmospheric radio noise burst represents the radiation received from one complete lightning flash at the frequency to which a receiver is tuned and within the receiver bandwidth. At tropical latitudes, the principal source of interference in the frequency range from 0.1 to 10 MHz is the burst form of atmospheric radio noise. The structure of a burst shows several approximately rectangular pulses of random amplitude, duration and frequency of recurrence. The influence of the noise on data communication can only be examined when the value of the number of pulses crossing a certain amplitude threshold per unit time of the noise burst is known. A pulse rate counter designed for this purpose has been used at Bangalore (12°58′N, 77°35′E) to investigate the pulse characteristics of noise bursts at 3 MHz with a receiver bandwidth of 3.3 kHz/6d B. The results show that the number of pulses lying in the amplitude range between peak and quasi-peak values of the noise bursts and the burst duration corresponding to these pulses follow log normal distributions. The pulse rates deduced therefrom show certain correlation between the number of pulses and the duration of the noise burst. The results are discussed with a view to furnish necessary information for data communication.

Three compounds have been found to be stable in the pseudobinary system Na2O---(α)Al2O3 between 825 and 1400 K; two nonstoichiometric phases, β-alumina and β″-alumina, and NaAlO2. The homogeneity of β-alumina ranges from 9.5 to 11 mol% Na2O, while that of β″-alumina from 13.3 to 15.9 mol% Na2O at 1173 K. The activity of Na2O in the two-phase fields has been determined by a solid-state potentiometric technique. Since both β- and β″-alumina are fast sodium ion conductors, biphasic solid electrolyte tubes were used in these electrochemical measurements. The open circuit emf of the following cells were measured from 790 to 980 K: [GRAPHICS] The partial molar Gibbs' energy of Na2O relative to gamma-Na2O in the two-phase regions can be represented as: DELTA-GBAR(Na2O)(alpha- + beta-alumina) = -270,900 + 24.03 T, DELTA-GBAR(Na2O)(beta- + beta"-alumina) = -232,700 + 56.19 T, and DELTA-GBAR(Na2O)(beta"-alumina + NaAlO2) = -13,100 - 4.51 T J mol-1. Similar galvanic cells using a Au-Na alloy and a mixture of Co + CoAl(2+2x)O4+3x + (alpha)Al2O3 as electrodes were used at 1400 K. Thermodynamic data obtained in these studies are used to evaluate phase relations and partial pressure of sodium in the Na2O-(alpha) Al2O3 system as a function of oxygen partial pressure, composition and temperature.

Spectroscopic methods have provided information of seminal importance in understanding phase transitions in solids. After briefly examining some fundamental concept related to phase transitions, we shall discuss several case studies particularly involving the use of vibrational (IR and Raman) spectroscopy. Examples will include both order-disorder and displacive transitions. Under the former are included transitions in nitrates, ammonium halides, alkylammonium salts, plastic state of C60 and superionic conductors (specially CsHSO4). In addition, we shall discuss some aspects of incommensurate phase transitions, the glass transition and electronic phase transitions. Transitions of phosphonitrilic halide tetramers and alkane dicarboxylic acids are also examined

Solid oxide-ion electrolytes find application in oxygen sensors, oxygen pumps and in high-temperature electrolyser-fuel-cell hybrid systems. All the solid electrolytes known so Qr, however, exhibit: tow oxide-ion conductivities below 973 K. Therefore, there is a need for fast oxide-ion conductors operative at temperatures around 673 K, Recently, efforts have been directed towards developing such materials. This article summarizes various type of oxide-ton electrolytes reported in literature and outlines a strategy for the identificatiom/synthesis of improved materials.

New composition gradient solid electrolytes have been designed for application in high temperature solid-state galvanic sensors and in thermodynamic measurements. The functionally gradient electrolyte consists of a solid solution between two or more ionic conductors with a common ion and gradual variation in composition of the other ionic species. Unequal rates of migration of the ions, caused by the presence of the concentration gradient, may result in the development of space charge, manifesting as diffusion potential. Presented is a theoretical analysis of the EMF of cells incorporating gradient solid electrolytes. An analytical expression is derived for diffusion potential, using the thermodynamics of irreversible processes, for different types of concentration gradients and boundary conditions at the electrode/electrolyte interfaces. The diffusion potential of an isothermal cell incorporating these gradient electrolytes becomes negligible if there is only one mobile ion and the transport numbers of the relatively immobile polyionic species and electrons approach zero. The analysis of the EMF of a nonisothermal cell incorporating a composition gradient solid electrolyte indicates that the cell EMF can be expressed in terms of the thermodynamic parameters at the electrodes and the Seebeck coefficient of the gradient electrolyte under standard conditions when the transport number of one of the ions approaches unity.

Triammonium hydrogen disulphate, (NH4)(3)H(SO4)(2), belongs to the family of crystal structures M3H(XO4)(2) (with M = NH4, K, Rb, Cs, and X = S, Se) which display super protonic phases at elevated temperatures, while at room temperature these are relatively poor proton conductors. The crystal structure of triammonium hydrogen disulphate has been determined by X-ray diffraction at -90 degrees C and the variation in the characteristics of the hydrogen bond is discussed in comparison with that of the structures at -110 degrees C and room temperature. It is concluded that the mechanics involving the proton migration in such systems is realised in terms of the variations in the hydrogen bond features with temperature.
