The multiphase flow of fluids in the unsaturated porous medium is considered as a three phase flow of water, NAPL, and air simultaneously in the porous medium. The adaptive solution fully implicit modified sequential method is used for the numerical modelling. The effect of capillarity and heterogeneity effect at the interface between the media is studied and it is observed that the interface criteria has to be taken into account for the correct prediction of NAPL migration especially in heterogeneous media. The modified Newton Raphson method is used for the linearization and Hestines and Steifel Conjugate Gradient method is used as the solver.

The enantiospecific total synthesis of silphiperfol-6-ene has been accomplished starting from the readily available monoterpene (R)-limonene, employing a rhodium carbenoid insertion into the CH bond of a tertiary methyl group. A substrate dependent competitive insertion of the rhodium carbenoid in the gamma- and beta-CH bonds to form cyclopentanone and cyclobutanones, respectively, has been described. The evolution of microstructure and texture gradient in warm Accumulative Roll Bonded Cu-Cu multilayer has been studied. Grain size distribution is multimodal and exhibits variation from middle to surface layer. Evolution of texture is largely influenced by shear, in addition to rolling deformation. This leads to the formation of a texture comprising of high fraction of Brass and rolling direction-rotated cube components. Partial recrystallization was observed. Deformed and recrystallized grains were separated using a partition scheme based on grain orientation spread and textures were analyzed for both the partition. Retention of deformation texture components in recrystallized grains suggests the mechanism of recrystallization as continuous recrystallization. Shear deformation plays an important role in grain refinement through continuous recrystallization. (C) 2012 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Luteal insufficiency affects fertility and hence study of mechanisms that regulate corpus luteum (CL) function is of prime importance to overcome infertility problems. Exploration of human genome sequence has helped to study the frequency of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). Clinical benefits of screening SNPs in infertility are being recognized well in recent times. Examining SNPs in genes associated with maintenance and regression of CL may help to understand unexplained luteal insufficiency and related infertility. Publicly available microarray gene expression databases reveal the global gene expression patterns in primate CL during the different functional state. We intend to explore computationally the deleterious SNPs of human genes reported to be common targets of luteolysin and luteotropin in primate CL Different computational algorithms were used to dissect out the functional significance of SNPs in the luteinizing hormone sensitive genes. The results raise the possibility that screening for SNPs might be integrated to evaluate luteal insufficiency associated with human female infertility for future studies. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. The evolution of microstructure and texture in commercially pure titanium has been studied as a function of strain path during rolling using experimental techniques and viscoplastic self-consistent simulations. Four different strain paths, namely unidirectional rolling, two-step cross rolling, multistep cross rolling, and reverse rolling, have been employed to decipher the effect of strain path change on the evolution of deformation texture and microstructure. The cross-rolled samples show higher hardness with lower microstrain and intragranular misorientation compared to the unidirectional rolled sample as determined from X-ray diffraction and electron backscatter diffraction, respectively. The higher hardness of the cross-rolled samples is attributed to orientation hardening due to the near basal texture. Viscoplastic self-consistent simulations are able to successfully predict the texture evolution of the differently rolled samples. Simulation results indicate the higher contribution of basal slip in the formation of near basal texture and as well as lower intragranular misorientation in the cross-rolled samples.

The rapid recent increase in microarray-based gene expression studies in the corpus luteum (CL) utilizing macaque models gathered increasing volume of data in publically accessible microarray expression databases. Examining gene pathways in different functional states of CL may help to understand the factors that control luteal function and hence human fertility. Co-regulation of genes in microarray experiments may imply common transcriptional regulation by sequence-specific DNA-binding transcriptional factors. We have computationally analyzed the transcription factor binding sites (TFBS) in a previously reported macaque luteal microarray gene set (n = 15) that are common targets of luteotropin (luteinizing hormone (LH) and human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG)) and luteolysin (prostaglandin (PG) F-2 alpha). This in silico approach can reveal transcriptional networks that control these important genes which are representative of the interplay between luteotropic and luteolytic factors in the control of luteal function. Our computational analyses revealed 6 matrix families whose binding sites are significantly over-represented in promoters of these genes. The roles of these factors are discussed, which might help to understand the transcriptional regulatory network in the control of luteal function. These factors might be promising experimental targets for investigation of human luteal insufficiency. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Evolution of microhardness and microstructure in a cast Al–7 % Si alloy during high-pressure torsion
Resumo:
Disks of a cast Al-7 % Si alloy were processed through high-pressure torsion (HPT) for 1/4, 1/2, 1, 5, and 10 revolutions under a pressure of 6.0 GPa and at temperatures of 298 and 445 K. The hardness of the samples after processing was significantly higher than in the cast sample, and the hardness profiles across the samples became more uniform with increasing numbers of turns. Processing at higher temperature gave lower hardness values. Experiments were conducted to examine the effects of HPT processing on various microstructural aspects of the cast Al-7 % Si alloy such as the grain size, the Taylor factor, and the fraction of high-angle grain boundaries. The results demonstrate that there is a correlation between trends in the microhardness values and the observed microstructures.

Friction stir processing was carried out on the Al-Mg-Mn alloy to achieve ultrafine grained microstructure. The evolution of microstructure and micro-texture was studied in different regions of the deformed sample, namely nugget zone, thermo-mechanically affected zone (TMAZ) and base metal. The average grain sizes of the nugget zone, TMAZ and base metal are 1.5 mu m +/- 0.5 mu m, 15 mu m +/- 8 mu m, and 80 mu m +/- 10 mu m, respectively. The TMAZ exhibits excessive deformation banding structure and sub-grain formation. The orientation gradient within the sub-grain is dependent on grain size, orientation, and distance from nugget zone. The microstructure was partitioned based on the grain orientation spread and grain size values to separate the recrystallized fraction from the deformed region in order to understand the micromechanism of grain refinement. The texture of both deformed and recrystallized regions are similar in nature. Microstructure and texture analysis suggest that the restoration processes are different in different regions of the processed sample. The transition region between nugget zone and TMAZ exhibits large elongated grains surrounded by fine equiaxed grains of different orientation which indicate the process of discontinuous dynamic recrystallization. Within the nugget zone, similar texture between deformed and recrystallized grain fraction suggests that the restoration mechanism is a continuous process.

This paper deals with the evolution of microstructure and texture during hot rolling of hafnium containing NiTi based shape memory alloy Ni49.4Ti38.6Hf12. The formation of the R-phase has been associated with the precipitation of (Ti,Hf)(2)Ni phase. The crystallographic texture of the parent phase B2 as well as the product phases R and B19' have been determined. It has been found that the variant selection during the B2 -> R phase transformation is quite strong compared to the case of the B2 -> B19' transformation. During deformation, the texture of the austenite phase evolves with strong Goss and Bs components. After transformation to martensitic structure, it gives rise to a 011]parallel to RD fiber. Microstructure and texture studies reveal the occurrence of partial dynamic recrystallization during hot rolling. Large strain heterogeneities that occur surrounding (Ti,Hf)(2)Ni precipitates are relieved through extended dynamic recovery instead of particle stimulated nucleation.

Amorphous thin chalcogenide Si15Te85-xGex films (x: 5, 9, 10, 11, 12) are prepared by flash evaporation and the temperature dependence of resistance of these films has been studied in the temperature range 25-250 degrees C. All the compositions show a linear variation of resistance in this temperature range. Apart from the linear variation, a sharp reduction in resistance at one or at two distinct temperatures (T-TR1/T-TR2) is seen. Thin films annealed at these temperatures, when subjected to X-ray diffraction studies suggest that the dominant crystalline phase at T-TR1 and at T-TR2 is the same and the two dips are associated with varying levels of crystallization. This is also reflected in the atomic force microscopic (AFM) study. Further, the resistance of these two phases shows no drift when the films are annealed for varying lengths of time (10 min to 120 min) suggesting the stability of the phases.

In this work, we present a study on the negative differential resistance (NDR) behavior and the impact of various deformations (like ripple, twist, wrap) and defects like vacancies and edge roughness on the electronic properties of short-channel MoS2 armchair nanoribbon MOSFETs. The effect of deformation (3 degrees-7 degrees twist or wrap and 0.3-0.7 angstrom ripple amplitude) and defects on a 10 nm MoS2 ANR FET is evaluated by the density functional tight binding theory and the non-equilibrium Green's function approach. We study the channel density of states, transmission spectra, and the I-D-V-D characteristics of such devices under the varying conditions, with focus on the NDR behavior. Our results show significant change in the NDR peak to valley ratio and the NDR window with such minor intrinsic deformations, especially with the ripple. (C) 2013 AIP Publishing LLC.

Automatic and accurate detection of the closure-burst transition events of stops and affricates serves many applications in speech processing. A temporal measure named the plosion index is proposed to detect such events, which are characterized by an abrupt increase in energy. Using the maxima of the pitch-synchronous normalized cross correlation as an additional temporal feature, a rule-based algorithm is designed that aims at selecting only those events associated with the closure-burst transitions of stops and affricates. The performance of the algorithm, characterized by receiver operating characteristic curves and temporal accuracy, is evaluated using the labeled closure-burst transitions of stops and affricates of the entire TIMIT test and training databases. The robustness of the algorithm is studied with respect to global white and babble noise as well as local noise using the TIMIT test set and on telephone quality speech using the NTIMIT test set. For these experiments, the proposed algorithm, which does not require explicit statistical training and is based on two one-dimensional temporal measures, gives a performance comparable to or better than the state-of-the-art methods. In addition, to test the scalability, the algorithm is applied on the Buckeye conversational speech corpus and databases of two Indian languages. (C) 2014 Acoustical Society of America.

The mechanical behaviour of composite materials differs from that of conventional structural materials owing to their heterogeneous and anisotropic nature. Different types of defects and anomalies get induced in these materials during the fabrication process. Further, during their service life, the components made of composite materials develop different types of damage. The performance and life of such components is governed by the combined effect of all these defects and damage. While porosity, voids, inclusions etc., are some defects those can get induced during the fabrication of composites, matrix cracks, interface debonds, delaminations and fiber breakage are major types of service induced damage which are of concern. During the service life of components made of composites, one type of damage can grow and initiate another type of damage. For example, matrix cracks can gradually grow to the interface and initiate debonds. Interface debonds in a particular plane can lead to delaminations. Consequently, the combined effect of different types of distributed damage causes the failure of the component. A set of non-destructive evaluation (NDE) methods is well established for testing conventional metallic materials. Some of them can also be utilized for composite materials as they are, and in some cases with a little different approach or modification. Ultrasonics, Radiography, Thermography, Fiber Optics, Acoustic Emision Techniques etc., to name a few. Detection, evaluation and characterization of different types of defects and damage encountered in composite materials and structures using different NDE tools is discussed briefly in this paper.
