Amorphous Silicon Germanium (a-SiGe) thin films of 500 nm thickness are deposited on silicon substrates using Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapour Deposition (PECVD). To obtain polycrystalline nature of films, thermal annealing is done at various temperature (450-600 degrees C) and time (1-10 h). The surface morphology of the pre- and post-annealed films is investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The crystallographic structure of the film is obtained by X-ray diffraction method. Raman spectroscopy is carried out to quantify the Ge concentration and the degree of strain relaxation in the film. Nano-indentation is performed to obtain the mechanical properties of the film. It is found that annealing reduces the surface roughness of the film and increases the Ge concentration in the film. The grain size of the film increases with increase in annealing temperature. The grain size is found to decrease with increase in annealing time up to 5 h and then increased. The results show that 550 degrees C for 5 h is the critical annealing condition for variation of structural and mechanical properties of the film. Recrystallization starts at this condition and results in finer grains. An increase in hardness value of 7-8 GPa has been observed. Grain growth occurs above this critical annealing condition and degrades the mechanical properties of the film. The strain in the film is only relaxed to about 55% even for 10 h of annealing at 600 degrees C. Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) observations show that the strain relaxation occurs by forming misfit dislocations and these dislocations are confined to the SiGe/Si interface. A generalized mass transport model is developed for predicting the rate ofdeposition in chemical vapor deposition (CVD) systems. This combines thegeneralized method of obtaining equilibrium composition, with elemental fluxbalance expressions. This procedure avoids the usual problems encountered incalculating the rates in multicomponent systems, like writing overall reactionschemes. The dependence of multicomponent diffusivities on the fluxes is accountedin this model using an iterative procedure. The model developed isapplied to the deposition of titanium carbide on cemented carbide tool bitsfrom a gas mixture of titanium tetrachloride, toluene, and hydrogen. Experimentaldeposition rates were obtained using a thermogravimetric assembly.Mass transport controlled rates give an order of magnitude estimates of theobserved rates.

High-quality GaN epilayers were grown on Si (1 1 1) substrates by molecular beam epitaxy using a new growth process sequence which involved a substrate nitridation at low temperatures, annealing at high temperatures, followed by nitridation at high temperatures, deposition of a low-temperature buffer layer, and a high-temperature overgrowth. The material quality of the GaN films was also investigated as a function of nitridation time and temperature. Crystallinity and surface roughness of GaN was found to improve when the Si substrate was treated under the new growth process sequence. Micro-Raman and photoluminescence (PL) measurement results indicate that the GaN film grown by the new process sequence has less tensile stress and optically good. The surface and interface structures of an ultra thin silicon nitride film grown on the Si surface are investigated by core-level photoelectron spectroscopy and it clearly indicates that the quality of silicon nitride notably affects the properties of GaN growth. Highly textured, as-deposited La0.6Pb0.4MnO3 thin films have been grown on LaAlO3 by pulsed laser deposition. The films are ferromagnetic metals below 300 K. Giant negative magnetoresistance of over 40% is observed at 300 K at 6 T.

The La0.6Pb0.4MnO3(LPMO) thin films were in situ deposited at different oxygen partial pressure and at a substrate temperature of 630 degrees C by pulsed laser deposition. The films grown at lower oxygen partial pressures showed an increase in lattice parameter and resistivity and a decrease in the insulator-metal transition temperature as compared to the stoichiometric LPMO thin film grown at 400 mTorr. Further, these oxygen-deficient thin films showed over 70% giant magnetoresistance (GMR) near the insulator-metal transition temperature against the 40% GMR in the case of stoichiometric thin films. Equilibrium thermodynamic analysis has been applied to the low-pressure MOCVD process using manganese acetylacetonate as the precursor. ``CVD phase stability diagrams'' have been constructed separately for the processes carried out in argon and oxygen ambient, depicting the compositions of the resulting films as functions of CVD parameters. For the process conduced in argon ambient, the analysis predicts the simultaneous deposition of MnO and elemental carbon in 1: 3 molar proportion, over a range of temperatures. The analysis predicts also that, if CVD is carried out in oxygen ambient, even a very low flow of oxygen leads to the complete absence of carbon in the film deposited oxygen, with greater oxygen flow resulting in the simultaneous deposition of two different manganese oxides under certain conditions. The results of thermodynamic modeling have been verified quantitatively for low-pressure CVD conducted in argon ambient. Indeed, the large excess of carbon in the deposit is found to constitute a MnO/C nanocomposite, the associated cauliflower-like morphology making it a promising candidate for electrode material in supercapacitors. CVD carried out in oxygen flow, under specific conditions, leads to the deposition of more than one manganese oxide, as expected from thermodynamic analysis ( and forming an oxide-oxide nanocomposite). These results together demonstrate that thermodynamic analysis of the MOCVD process can be employed to synthesize thin films in a predictive manner, thus avoiding the inefficient trial-and-error method usually associated with MOCVD process development. The prospect of developing thin films of novel compositions and characteristics in a predictive manner, through the appropriate choice of CVD precursors and process conditions, emerges from the present work.

We report the successful synthesis of crystalline carbon nitride by chemical vapor deposition of certain nitrogen containing organic precursors. The precursor is heated and the vapors enter the hot deposition zone where they are pyrolysed and deposited in the form of thin films over pretreated substrates. The powder x-ray diffraction analysis shows clear peaks corresponding to the carbon nitride crystals of tetragonal form in addition to a broad hump corresponding to the amorphous nitrogenated carbon. The crystallites size is similar to300Angstrom and the volume fraction of the crystallites is about similar to7%. The optimum conditions of preparation are found out. The Infrared spectra of these samples also suggest the formation of Carbon Nitride crystals. The analysis reconfirms that the material contains crystallites of Carbon Nitride embedded in an amorphous matrix of nitrogenated carbon. Further the material is characterized by C,H,N elemental analysis, EDX and Raman spectra. Since all the above analyses probe the bulk material, the background amorphous matrix in this case, expecting a clear evidence of nanometer sized crystallites from these tests are unlikely. Attempts are being made to increase the yield of these carbon nitride crystallites.

Electrochemical deposition of Ni-Pd alloy films of various compositions from bath solution containing ethylenediamine (EDA) was carried out to use as anode material for methanol oxidative fuel cell in H2SO4 medium. Electronic absorption spectrum of bath solution containing Ni2+ Pd2+ ions and EDA indicated the formation of a four coordinate square planar metal-ligand complex of both the metal ions. X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns of the deposited alloy films show an increase in Pd-Ni alloy lattice parameter with increase in Pd content, and indicate the substitution of Pd in the lattice. A nano/ultrafine kind of crystal growth was observed in the alloy film deposited at low current density (2.5 mA cm(-2)). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic (XPS) studies on the successively sputtered films showed the presence of Ni and Pd in pure metallic states and the surface concentration ratio of Ni to Pd is less than bulk indicating the segregation of Pd on the surface. Electro-catalytic oxidation of methanol in H2SO4 medium is found to be promoted on Ni-Pd electrodeposits. The anodic peak current characteristics to oxidation reaction on Ni-Pd was found typically high when compared to pure nickel and the relative increase in surface area by alloying the Ni by Pd was found to be as much as 300 times. Epitaxial LaNiO3 thin films have been grown on SrTiO3 and several other substrates by pulsed laser deposition. The films are observed to be metallic down to 15 K, and the temperature dependence of resistivity is similar to that of bulk LaNiO3. Epitaxial, c-axis oriented YBa2Cu3O7-x films with good superconducting properties have been grown on the LaNiO3 (100) films. I-V characteristics of the YBa2Cu3O7-x-LaNiO3 junction are linear, indicating ohmic contact between them.

To investigate the role of grain boundaries and other growth related microstructure in manganite films, a scanning tunneling microscope is used to simultaneously probe surface topography and local potential distribution under current flow at nanometer level in films of epitaxial thin films of La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 deposited on single crystal SrTiO3 and NdGaO3 substrate by laser ablation. We have studied two types of films strained and strain relaxed. Thin (50nm) films (strained due to lattice mismatch between substrate and the film) show step growth (unit cell steps) and have very smooth surfaces. Relatively thicker films (strain relaxed, thickness 200nm) do not have these step growths and show rather smooth well connected grains. Charge transport in these films is not uniform on the nanometer level and is accompanied by potential jumps at the internal surfaces. In particular scattering from grain boundaries results in large variations in the local potential resulting in fields as high as 104-105V/cm located near the grain boundaries. We discuss the role of local strain and strain inhomogeneties in determining the current transport in these films and their resistance and magnetoresistivity. In this paper we attempt to correlate between bulk electronic properties with microscopic electronic conduction using scanning tunneling microscopy and scanning tunneling potentiometry.

Homogeneous composite thin films of Fe2O3-carbon nanotube were synthesized in a novel, single-step process by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) using ferric acetyl acetonate as precursor. The deposition of composite takes place in a narrow range of CVD conditions, beyond which the deposition either multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) only or hematite (α-Fe2O3) only takes place. The composite film formed on stainless steel substrates were tested for their supercapacitive properties in various aqueous electrolytes.

The removal of native oxide from Si (1 1 1) surfaces was investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and secondary ion mass spectra (SIMS) depth profiles. Two different oxide removal methods, performed under ultrahigh-vacuum (UHV) conditions, were carried out and compared. The first cleaning method is thermal desorption of oxide at 900 degrees C. The second method is the deposition of metallic gallium followed by redesorption. A significant decrease in oxygen was achieved by thermal desorption at 900 degrees C under UHV conditions. By applying a subsequent Ga deposition/redesorption, a further reduction in oxygen could be achieved. We examine the merits of an alternative oxide desorption method via conversion of the stable SiO(2) surface oxide into a volatile Ca(2)O oxide by a supply of Ga metals. Furthermore, ultra thin films of pure silicon nitride buffer layer were grown on a Si (1 1 1) surface by exposing the surface to radio-frequency (RF) nitrogen plasma followed by GaN growth. The SIMS depth profile shows that the oxygen impurity can be reduced at GaN/beta-Si(3)N(4)/Si interfaces by applying a subsequent Ga deposition/redesorption. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. Homogeneous thin films of Sr(0.6)Ca(0.4)TiO(3) (SCT40) and asymmetric multilayer of SrTiO(3) (STO) and CaTiO(3) (CTO) were fabricated on Pt/Ti/SiO(2)/Si substrates by using pulsed laser deposition technique. The electrical behavior of films was observed within a temperature range of 153 K-373 K. A feeble dielectric peak of SCT40 thin film at 273 K is justified as paraelectric to antiferroelectric phase transition. Moreover, the Curie-Weiss temperature, determined from the epsilon'(T) data above the transition temperature is found to be negative. Using Landau theory, the negative Curie-Weiss temperature is interpreted in terms of an antiferroelectric transition. The asymmetric multilayer exhibits a broad dielectric peak at 273 K. and is attributed to interdiffusion at several interfaces of multilayer. The average dielectric constants for homogeneous Sr(0.6)Ca(0.4)TiO(3) films (similar to 650) and asymmetric multilayered films (similar to 350) at room temperature are recognized as a consequence of grain size effect. Small frequency dispersion in the real part of the dielectric constants and relatively low dielectric losses for both cases ensure high quality of the films applicable for next generation integrated devices. Thin films of (1-x)Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O-3 - xPbTiO(3) (x = 0.1 to 0.3)(PMN-PT) were deposited on the platinum coated silicon substrate by pulsed excimer laser ablation technique. A template layer of LaSr0.5Co0.5O3 (LSCO) was deposited on platinum substrate prior to the deposition of PMN-PT thin films. The composition and the structure of the films were modulated via proper variation of the deposition parameter such as substrate temperature, laser fluence and thickness of the template layers. We observed the impact of the thickness of LSCO template layer on the orientation of the films. A room temperature dielectric constant varying from 2000 to 4500 was noted for different composition of the films. The dielectric properties of the films were studied over the frequency range of 100 Hz - 100 kHz over a wide range of temperatures. The films exhibited the relaxor- type behavior that was characterized by the frequency dispersion of the temperature of dielectric constant maxima (T-m) and also diffuse phase transition.
