A reliable method for service life estimation of the structural element is a prerequisite for service life design. A new methodology for durability-based service life estimation of reinforced concrete flexural elements with respect to chloride-induced corrosion of reinforcement is proposed. The methodology takes into consideration the fuzzy and random uncertainties associated with the variables involved in service life estimation by using a hybrid method combining the vertex method of fuzzy set theory with Monte Carlo simulation technique. It is also shown how to determine the bounds for characteristic value of failure probability from the resulting fuzzy set for failure probability with minimal computational effort. Using the methodology, the bounds for the characteristic value of failure probability for a reinforced concrete T-beam bridge girder has been determined. The service life of the structural element is determined by comparing the upper bound of characteristic value of failure probability with the target failure probability. The methodology will be useful for durability-based service life design and also for making decisions regarding in-service inspections.

In the present study, the mechanical behaviour of CSM (chopped strand mat)-based GFRC (glass fibre-reinforced composite) plates with single and multiple hemispheres under compressive loads has been investigated both experimentally and numerically. The basic stress-strain behaviours arc identified with quasi-static tests on two-ply coupon laminates and short cylinders, and these are followed up with compressive tests in a UTM (universal testing machine) on single- and multiple-hemisphere plates. The ability of an explicit LS-DYNA solver in predicting the complex material behaviour of composite hemispheres, including failure, is demonstrated. The relevance and scalability of the present class of structural components as `force-multipliers' and `energy-multipliers' have been justified by virtue of findings that as the number of hemispheres in a panel increased from one to four, peak load and average absorbed energy rose by factors of approximately four and six, respectively. The performance of a composite hemisphere has been compared to similar-sized steel and aluminium hemispheres, and the former is found to be of distinctly higher specific energy than the steel specimen. A simulation-based study has also been carried out on a composite 2 x 2-hemisphere panel under impact loads and its behaviour approaching that of an ideal energy absorber has been predicted. In summary, the present investigation has established the efficacy of composite plates with hemispherical force multipliers as potential energy-absorbing countermeasures and the suitability of CAE (computer-aided engineering) for their design.

Charge linearization techniques have been used over the years in advanced compact models for bulk and double-gate MOSFETs in order to approximate the position along the channel as a quadratic function of the surface potential (or inversion charge densities) so that the terminal charges can be expressed as a compact closed-form function of source and drain end surface potentials (or inversion charge densities). In this paper, in case of the independent double-gate MOSFETs, we show that the same technique could be used to model the terminal charges quite accurately only when the 1-D Poisson solution along the channel is fully hyperbolic in nature or the effective gate voltages are same. However, for other bias conditions, it leads to significant error in terminal charge computation. We further demonstrate that the amount of nonlinearity that prevails between the surface potentials along the channel actually dictates if the conventional charge linearization technique could be applied for a particular bias condition or not. Taking into account this nonlinearity, we propose a compact charge model, which is based on a novel piecewise linearization technique and shows excellent agreement with numerical and Technology Computer-Aided Design (TCAD) simulations for all bias conditions and also preserves the source/drain symmetry which is essential for Radio Frequency (RF) circuit design. The model is implemented in a professional circuit simulator through Verilog-A, and simulation examples for different circuits verify good model convergence.

This paper presents classification, representation and extraction of deformation features in sheet-metal parts. The thickness is constant for these shape features and hence these are also referred to as constant thickness features. The deformation feature is represented as a set of faces with a characteristic arrangement among the faces. Deformation of the base-sheet or forming of material creates Bends and Walls with respect to a base-sheet or a reference plane. These are referred to as Basic Deformation Features (BDFs). Compound deformation features having two or more BDFs are defined as characteristic combinations of Bends and Walls and represented as a graph called Basic Deformation Features Graph (BDFG). The graph, therefore, represents a compound deformation feature uniquely. The characteristic arrangement of the faces and type of bends belonging to the feature decide the type and nature of the deformation feature. Algorithms have been developed to extract and identify deformation features from a CAD model of sheet-metal parts. The proposed algorithm does not require folding and unfolding of the part as intermediate steps to recognize deformation features. Representations of typical features are illustrated and results of extracting these deformation features from typical sheet metal parts are presented and discussed. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. In the domain of manual mechanical assembly, expert knowledge is an important means of supporting assembly planning that leads to fewer issues during actual assembly. Knowledge based systems can be used to provide assembly planners with expert knowledge as advice. However, acquisition of knowledge remains a difficult task to automate, while manual acquisition is tedious, time-consuming, and requires engagement of knowledge engineers with specialist knowledge to understand and translate expert knowledge. This paper describes the development, implementation and preliminary evaluation of a method that asks a series of questions to an expert, so as to automatically acquire necessary diagnostic and remedial knowledge as rules for use in a knowledge based system for advising assembly planners diagnose and resolve issues. The method, called a questioning procedure, organizes its questions around an assembly situation which it presents to the expert as the context, and adapts its questions based on the answers it receives from the expert. Existing compact models for common double-gate (CDG) MOSFETs are based on the fundamental assumption of having symmetric gate oxide thickness. In this paper, we demonstrate that using the unique quasi-linear relationship between the surface potentials, it is possible to develop compact model for CDG-MOSFETs without such approximation while preserving the mathematical complexity at the same level of the existing models. In the proposed model, the surface potential relationship is used to include the drain-induced barrier lowering, channel length modulation, velocity saturation, and quantum mechanical effect in the long-channel model and good agreement is observed with the technology computer aided design simulation results.

While absorption and emission spectroscopy have always been used to detect and characterize molecules and molecular complexes, the availability of ultrashort laser pulses and associated computer-aided optical detection techniques allowed study of chemical processes directly in the time domain at unprecedented time scales, through appearance and disappearance of fluorescence from participating chemical species. Application of such techniques to chemical dynamics in liquids, where many processes occur with picosecond and femtosecond time scales lead to the discovery of a host of new phenomena that in turn led to the development of many new theories. Experiment and theory together provided new and valuable insight into many fundamental chemical processes, like isomerization dynamics, electron and proton transfer reactions, vibrational energy and phase relaxation, photosynthesis, to name just a few. In this article, we shall review a few of such discoveries in attempt to provide a glimpse of the fascinating research employing fluorescence spectroscopy that changed the field of chemical dynamics forever.

The demand for variety of products and the shorter time to market is encouraging designers to adopt computer aided concept generation techniques. One such technique is being explored here. The present work makes an attempt towards synthesis of concepts for sensors using physical laws and effects as building blocks. A database of building blocks based upon the SAPPhIRE-lite model of causality is maintained. It uses composition to explore the solution space. The algorithm has been implemented in a web based tool. The tool generates two types of sensor designs: direct sensing designs and feedback sensing designs. According to the literature, synthesis using building blocks often lead to vague solutions principles. The current work tries to avoid uninteresting solutions by using some heuristics. A particularly novel outcome of the work described here is the generation of feedback based solutions, something not generated automatically before. A number of patent violations were observed with the set of generated concepts; thus emphasizing some amount of novelty in the designs.

In gross motion of flexible one-dimensional (1D) objects such as cables, ropes, chains, ribbons and hair, the assumption of constant length is realistic and reasonable. The motion of the object also appears more natural if the motion or disturbance given at one end attenuates along the length of the object. In an earlier work, variational calculus was used to derive natural and length-preserving transformation of planar and spatial curves and implemented for flexible 1D objects discretized with a large number of straight segments. This paper proposes a novel idea to reduce computational effort and enable real-time and realistic simulation of the motion of flexible 1D objects. The key idea is to represent the flexible 1D object as a spline and move the underlying control polygon with much smaller number of segments. To preserve the length of the curve to within a prescribed tolerance as the control polygon is moved, the control polygon is adaptively modified by subdivision and merging. New theoretical results relating the length of the curve and the angle between the adjacent segments of the control polygon are derived for quadratic and cubic splines. Depending on the prescribed tolerance on length error, the theoretical results are used to obtain threshold angles for subdivision and merging. Simulation results for arbitrarily chosen planar and spatial curves whose one end is subjected to generic input motions are provided to illustrate the approach. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. We consider systems composed of a base system with multiple “features” or “controllers”, each of which independently advise the system on how to react to input events so as to conform to their individual specifications. We propose a methodology for developing such systems in a way that guarantees the “maximal” use of each feature. The methodology is based on the notion of “conflict-tolerant” features that are designed to continue offering advice even when their advice has been overridden in the past. We give a simple priority-based composition scheme for such features, which ensures that each feature is maximally utilized. We also provide a formal framework for specifying, verifying, and synthesizing such features. In particular we obtain a compositional technique for verifying systems developed in this framework.

A computer code is developed as a part of an ongoing project on computer aided process modelling of forging operation, to simulate heat transfer in a die-billet system. The code developed on a stage-by-stage technique is based on an Alternating Direction Implicit scheme. The experimentally validated code is used to study the effect of process specifics such as preheat die temperature, machine ascent time, rate of deformation, and dwell time on the thermal characteristics in a batch coining operation where deformation is restricted to surface level only.

Click chemistry has been successfully extended into the field of molecular design of novel amphiphatic adducts. After their syntheses and characterizations, we have studied their aggregation properties in aqueous medium. Each of these adducts forms stable suspensions in water. These suspensions have been characterized by dynamic light scattering (DLS) studies and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The presence of inner aqueous compartments in such aggregates has been demonstrated using dye (methylene blue) entrapment studies. These aggregates have been further characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), which indicates the existence of bilayer structures in them. Therefore, the resulting aggregates could be described as vesicles. The temperature-induced order-to-disorder transitions of the vesicular aggregates and the accompanying changes in their packing and hydration have been examined using high-sensitivity differential scanning calorimetry, fluorescence anisotropy, and generalized polarization measurements using appropriate membrane-soluble probe, 1,6-diphenylhexatriene, and Paldan, respectively. The findings of these studies are consistent with each other in terms of the apparent phase transition temperatures. Langmuir monolayer studies confirmed that these click adducts also form stable monolayers on buffered aqueous subphase at the air-water interface.

Medical image segmentation finds application in computer-aided diagnosis, computer-guided surgery, measuring tissue volumes, locating tumors, and pathologies. One approach to segmentation is to use active contours or snakes. Active contours start from an initialization (often manually specified) and are guided by image-dependent forces to the object boundary. Snakes may also be guided by gradient vector fields associated with an image. The first main result in this direction is that of Xu and Prince, who proposed the notion of gradient vector flow (GVF), which is computed iteratively. We propose a new formalism to compute the vector flow based on the notion of bilateral filtering of the gradient field associated with the edge map - we refer to it as the bilateral vector flow (BVF). The range kernel definition that we employ is different from the one employed in the standard Gaussian bilateral filter. The advantage of the BVF formalism is that smooth gradient vector flow fields with enhanced edge information can be computed noniteratively. The quality of image segmentation turned out to be on par with that obtained using the GVF and in some cases better than the GVF.

Cancer has always been a dreadful disease and continues to attract extensive research investigations. Various targets have been identified to restrain cancer. Among these DNA happens to be the most explored one. A wide variety of small molecules, often referred to as `ligands', has been synthesized to target numerous structural features of DNA. The sole purpose of such molecular design has been to interfere with the transcriptional machinery in order to drive the cancer cell toward apoptosis. The mode of action of the DNA targeting ligands focuses either on the sequence-specificity by groove binding and strand cleavage, or by identifying the morphologically distinct higher order structures like that of the G-quadruplex DNA. However, in spite of the extensive research, only a tiny fraction of the molecules have been able to reach clinical trials and only a handful are used in chemotherapy. This review attempts to record the journey of the DNA binding small molecules from its inception to cancer therapy via various modifications at the molecular level. Nevertheless, factors like limited bioavailability, severe toxicities, unfavorable pharmacokinetics etc. still prove to be the major impediments in the field which warrant considerable scope for further research investigations.
