Viable stuffed fullerenelike boron carbide nanoclusters, C50B34, C48B36-2, and their isomers based on an icosahedral B-84 fragment of elemental beta-rhombohedral boron have been investigated using density functional theory calculations. The structure and the stability of these clusters are rationalized using the polyhedral skeletal electron counting and ring-cap orbital overlap compatibility rules. The curvature of the fullerene was found to play a vital role in achieving the most stable isomer C50B34(3B). The large highest occupied molecular orbital-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (HOMO-LUMO) gaps, three dimensional aromaticity, and electron detachment energies support their high stability. Further, the IR and Raman active modes were recognized.

Boron Nitride Nanotubes (BNNTs) have alternating boron and nitrogen atoms in graphite like network and are strongly polar in nature due to a large charge on boron and nitrogen atoms. Hence electrostatic interactions are expected to play an important role in determining the elastic properties of BNNTs. In the absence of specific partial atomic charge information for boron and nitrogen, we have studied the elastic properties BNNTs varying the partial atomic charges on boron and nitrogen. We have computed Young modulus (Y) and Shear modulus (G) of BNNT as a function of the tube radius and number of walls using molecular mechanics calculation. Our calculation shows that Young modulus of BNNTs increases with increase in magnitude of the partial atomic charge on B and N and can be larger than the Young modulus of CNTs of same radius. This is in contrast to the earlier finding that CNTs has the largest tensile strength (PRL, 80, 4502, 1998). Shear modulus, on the other hand depends weakly on the magnitude of partial atomic charge and is less than the shear modulus of the CNT. The values obtained for Young modulus and Shear modulus are in excellent agreement with the available experimental results.

Sol-gel route was employed to grow polycrystalline thin films of Li-doped ZnO thin films (Zn1-xLixO, x=0.15). Polycrystalline films were obtained at a growth temperature of 400-500 degrees C. Ferroelectricity in Zn0.85Li0.15O was verified by examining the temperature variation of the real and imaginary parts of dielectric constant, and from the C-V measurements. The phase transition temperature was found to be 330 K. The room-temperature dielectric constant and dissipation factor were 15.5 and 0.09 respectively, at a frequency of 100 kHz. The films exhibited well-defined hysteresis loop, and the values of spontaneous polarization (P-s) and coercive field were 0.15 mu C/cm(2) and 20 kV/cm, respectively, confirming the presence of ferroelectricity.

Titanium alloys like Ti-6A-4V are the backbone materials for aerospace, energy and chemical industries. Hypoeutectic boron addition to Ti-6Al-4V alloy produces a reduction in as-cast grain size by roughly an order of magnitude resulting in the possibility of avoiding ingot breakdown step and thereby reducing the processing cost. In the present study, ISM processed as-cast boron added Ti-6Al-4V alloy is deformed in (alpha+beta)-phase field, where alpha-lath bending seemed to be the dominating deformation mechanism.

Spectral properties of Nd3+ and Dy3+ ions in different phosphate glasses were studied and several spectroscopic parameters were reported. Covalency of rare-earth-oxygen bond was studied in these phosphate glass matrices with the variation of modifier in host glass matrix Using Judd-Ofelt intensity parameters (Omega(2), Omega(4) and Omega(6)), radiative transition probabilities (A) and radiative lifetimes (tau(R)) of certain excited states of Nd3+ and Dy3+ ions are estimated in these glass matrices. From the magnitudes of branching ratios (beta(R)) and integrated absorption cross-sections (Sigma), certain transitions of both the ions are identified for laser excitation. From the emission spectra, peak stimulated emission cross-sections (sigma(P)) are evaluated for the emission transitions observed in all these phosphate glass matrices for both Nd3+ and Dy3+ ions. A solvothermal reaction of Al2O3, H3BO3, pyridine, and H2O at 180 degrees C/7 days in the presence of organic amine molecules gave rise to four new aluminoborates, [(C6H18N2)(AlB6O13H3)], I; [(C5H16N2) (AlB5O10)]center dot 2H(2)O, II; [(C5H16N2)-(AlB5O10)], III; and [(C5H17N3)(AlB5O10)] center dot H2O, IV, with two- and three-dimensional structures. All the structures have been formed by the connectivity involving Al3+ ions and [B5O10] cyclic pentaborate units. In 1, the 3-connected trigonal nodes form a layer that resembles a graphite structure has been observed. The compounds II, III, and IV, have 4-connected nodes that forms a diamond related three-dimensional structure. The formation of solvatomorphs in II and III is noteworthy and has been observed first time in a family of amine template aluminoborates. A comparison of the various aluminoborate structures reveals subtle relationships between the organic amines (length of the amines) and the final framework structures. The compounds have been characterized using a variety of techniques including IR, second-order optical behavior, and MAS NMR studies.

Motivated by a suggestion in our earlier work [G. Baskaran, Phys. Rev. B 65, 212505 (2002)], we study electron correlation driven superconductivity in doped graphene where on-site correlations are believed to be of intermediate strength. Using an extensive variational Monte Carlo study of the repulsive Hubbard model and a correlated ground state wave function, we show that doped graphene supports a superconducting ground state with a d+id pairing symmetry. We estimate superconductivity reaching room temperatures at an optimal doping of about 15%-20%. Our work suggests that correlations can stabilize superconductivity even in systems with intermediate coupling.

Electrical switching and differential scanning calorimetric studies are undertaken on bulk As20Te80-xGax glasses, to elucidate the network topological thresholds. It is found that these glasses exhibit a single glass transition (T-g) and two crystallization reactions (T-cl & T-c2) upon heating. It is also found that there is only a marginal change in T-g with the addition of up to about 10% of Ga; around this composition an increase is seen in 7, which culminates in a local maximum around x = 15. The decrease exhibited in T, beyond this composition, leads to a local minimum at x = 17.5. Further, the As20Te80-xGax glasses are found to exhibit memory type electrical switching. The switching voltages (VT) increase with the increase in gallium content and a local maximum is seen in V-tau around x = 15. VT is found to decrease with x thereafter, exhibiting a local minimum around x = 17.5. The composition dependence of T-cl is found to be very similar to that of V-T of As20Te80-xGax glasses. Based on the present results, it is proposed that the composition x = 15 and x = 17.5 correspond to the rigidity percolation and chemical thresholds, respectively, of As20Te80-xGax glasses. Structural, optical and magnetic studies of Co-doped ZnO have been carried out for bulk as well as thin films. The magnetic studies revealed the superparamagnetic nature for low-temperature synthesized samples, indicating the presence of cobalt metallic clusters, and this is supported by the optical studies. For the high-temperature sintered samples one obtains paramagnetism. The optical studies reveal the presence of Co2+ ions in the tetrahedral sites indicating proper doping. Interestingly, the films deposited by laser ablation from the paramagnetic target showed room temperature ferromagnetism. It appears that the magnetic nature of this system is process dependent.

The ignition behaviour of boron powder, prepared through electrowinning process, was studied by using thermogravimetry coupled with simultaneous differential thermal analysis (TG-SDTA). The dependence of the inception of the ignition reaction on the partial pressure of oxygen, particle size of the boron powder and heating rate was investigated. It was observed that all these factors affect the ignition temperature. Boron powder with a mean particle size of about 10 mu m was found to be susceptible to ignition in oxygen even at 783K. In general, the susceptibility to ignition was found to vary inversely with the degree of crystallinity. Presence of carbon was found to retard the oxidation of boron and raise the ignition temperature. These results are useful in safe handling and storage of finely divided boron powder and in the subsequent production of boron carbide from it. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The optical properties of Bi(2)V(1-x)MnxO(5.5-x) (x=0.05, 0.1, 0.15 and 0.2 at.%) thin films fabricated by pulsed laser deposition on platinized Silicon Substrates were Studied in UV-visible spectral region (1.51-4.17 CV) using spectroscopic ellipsometry. The optical constants and thicknesses of these films have been obtained by fitting the ellipsometric data (Psi and Delta) using a multilayer four-phase model system and a relaxed Lorentz oscillator dispersion relation. The surface roughness and film thickness obtained by spectroscopic ellipsometry were found to be consistent with the results obtained by atomic force and scanning electron microscopy. The refractive index measured at 650 nm does not show any marginal increase with Mn content. Further, the extinction coefficient does not show much decrease with increasing Mn content. An increase in optical band gap energy from 2.52 to 2.77 eV with increasing Mn Content from x = 0.05 to 0.15 was attributed to the increase in oxygen ion vacancy disorder. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. Theoretical studies using density functional theory are carried out to understand the electronic structure and bonding and electronic properties of elemental beta-rhombohedral boron. The calculated band structure of ideal beta-rhombohedral boron (B-105) shows valence electron deficiency and depicts metallic behavior. This is in contrast to the experimental result that it is a semiconductor. To understand this ambiguity we discuss the electronic structure and bonding of this allotrope with cluster fragment approach using our recently proposed mno rule. This helps us to comprehend in greater detail the structure of B-105 and materials which are closely related to beta-rhombohedral boron. The molecular structures B12H12-2, B28H21+1, BeB27H21, LiB27H21-1, CB27H21+2, B57H36+3, Be3B54H36, and Li2CB54H36, and corresponding solids Li8Be3B102 and Li10CB102 are arrived at using these ideas and studied using first principles density functional theory calculations.

The temperature and power dependence of Fermi-edge singularity (FES) in high-density two-dimensional electron gas, specific to pseudomorphic AlxGa1-xAs/InGa1-yAs/GaAs heterostructures is studied by photoluminescence (PL). In all these structures, there are two prominent transitions E-11 and E-21 considered to be the result of electron-hole recombination from first and second electron sub-bands with that of first heavy-hole sub-band. FES is observed approximately 5-10 meV below the E-21 transition. At 4.2 K, FES appears as a lower energy shoulder to the E-21 transition. The PL intensity of all the three transitions E-11, FES and E-21 grows linearly with excitation power. However, we observe anomalous behavior of FES with temperature. While PL intensity of E-11 and E-21 decrease with increasing temperature, FES transition becomes stronger initially and then quenches-off slowly (till 40K). Though it appears as a distinct peak at about 20 K, its maximum is around 7 - 13 K.
