It is a policy of Solid State Communications’ Executive Editorial Board to organize special issues from time to time on topics of current interests. The present issue focuses on soft condensed matter, a rapidly developing and diverse area of importance not only for the basic science, but also for its potential applications. The ten articles in this issue are intended to give the readers a snapshot of some latest developments in soft condensed matter, mainly from the point of view of basic science. As the special issues are intended for a broad audience, most articles are short reviews that introduce the readers to the relevant topics. Hence this special issue can be especially helpful to readers who might not be specialists in this area but would like to have a quick grasp on some of the interesting research directions.

A simple firing delay circuit for 3-φ fully controlled bridge using a phase locked loop is described. The circuit uses very few components and is an improved scheme over the existing methods. The use of this circuit in three-phase thyristor converters and 'circulating current free' mode dual converters is described.

This article presents the optical absorption and emission properties of Pr3+ and Nd3+ doped two different mixed alkali chloroborate glass matrices of the type 70B(2)O(3)center dot xLiCl center dot(30 - x)NaCl and 70B(2)O(3)center dot xLiCl center dot(30 - x)KCl (x = 5, 10, 15.20 and 25). The variation of Judd-Ofelt parameters (Omega(2), Omega(4) and Omega(6)), total radiative transition probabilities (A(T)), radiative lifetimes (tau(R)) and emission cross-sections (sigma(p)) with the variation of alkali contents in the glass matrix have been discussed in detail. The changes in the peak wavelengths of the hypersensitive transition and intensity parameters with x are correlated to the structural changes in the host matrix. The estimated radiative lifetimes of certain excited states of Pr3+ and Nd3+ in these two glass matrices are reported. Peak stimulated emission cross-sections (sigma(p)) are reported for the observed emission transitions of Pr3+ and Nd3+ ions. Branching ratios (beta) of the observed emission transitions obtained from the Judd-Ofelt theory are compared with the values obtained from the emission spectra. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. The activation of functional responses in rabbit peritoneal neutrophils by gramicidin and the chemotactic peptide, N-formyl-methionyl-leucyl-phenylalanine methyl ester, was studied. Gramicidin activated superoxide generation, lysosomal enzyme release and a decrease in fluorescence of chlortetracycline-loaded cells, as for the chemotactic peptide. The maximum intensities of the responses by gramicidin were lower than that by chemotactic peptide. Responses by both these peptides could be inhibited by t-butyloxycarbonyl-methionyl-leucyl-phenylalanine, a chemotactic peptide receptor antagonist. Gramicidin gave responses at low doses comparable to that of the chemotactic peptide.

CsH9N304, M r= 175.1, orthorhombic,P212~2 ~, a = 7.486 (1), b = 9.919 (2), c =20.279 (2) A, V= 1505.8 A 3, z = 8, D x = 1.54, D m = 1.60 Mg m -3, ~,(Cu Ka) = 1.5418 A, g = 1. I I mm -~, F(000) = 736, T = 300 K, final R = 0.032 for 1345 observed reflections. The two independent molecules in the asymmetric unit are related by a pseudo twofold axis, with the asparagine side chains having different conformations [X 2 being -132.1 (3) and 139.6 (2)°]. The crystal structure is stabilized by extensive hydrogen bonding, with a specific interaction between the carboxyl group of one molecule and the carbamoyl group of another forming hydrogen-bonded chains.

The vapour pressures of barium and strontium have been measured by continuous monitoring of the weight loss of Knudsen cells in the temperature range 700�1200 K. The results for strontium agree with those reported in the literature, but the vapour pressure of barium has been found to be considerably lower than the generally accepted value. The experimentally determined pressures are in good agreement with theoretical values obtained using the Gibbs-Bogoliubov first-order variational method.

The fluorescent probe dansyl cadaverine has been shown to bind strongly to mixed bile salt-phospholipid micelles containing unsaturation in the fatty acyl chains. Incorporation of cholesterol into the mixed micelles reduces the number of molecules of bound dansyl cadaverine without altering the binding affinity. These results suggest a tighter packing of the hydrocarbon matrix of the micelles in the presence of cholesterol.

The zeta potential of high-purity hematite at pH 6 and in a 10−3N NaCl solution has been determined at different concentrations of acetone using the streaming potential technique and the results correlated with the microhardness of the mineral. The zeta potential has been found to decrease as the hardness increases reaching a minimum at 10 cc per litre concentration of acetone when the hardness reaches a maximum. The results have been explained on the basis of competitive adsorption of chloride ions and acetone molecules at low concentrations of acetone and coadsorption of both species above 10 cc per litre concentration. Acetone in distilled water and 10−3N NaCl in distilled water decrease the microhardness of hematite individually between pH 5 to 7 and in combination increase the microhardness reaching a maximum at pH 6.

The electrical resistance is measured in two binary liquid systems CS2 + CH3NO2 and n-C7H16 + CH3OH in the critical region as a function of frequency from 10 Hz to 100 kHz. The critical exponent b ≈ 0.35 in the singularity of dR/dT α (T - Tc)−b near Tc has no appreciable dependence upon the frequency. Thus any contribution from dielectric dispersion to the critical resistivity is not appreciable. The universal behaviour of the dR/dT anomaly does not seem to be followed in binary liquid systems.

The problem of nondestructive determination of the state-of-charge of nickel-cadmium batteries has been examined experimentally as well as theoretically from the viewpoint of internal impedance. It is shown that the modulus of the impedance is mainly controlled by diffusion at all states of charge. Even so, a prediction of the state of charge is possible if the equivalent series/parallel capacitance or the alternating current phase shift is measured at a sufficiently low a.c. test frequency (5–30 Hz) which also avoids inductive effects. These results are explained on the basis of a uniform transmission-line analog equivalent circuit for the battery electrodes.
