A recent theoretical model developed by Imparato et al. Phys of the experimentally measured heat and work effects produced by the thermal fluctuations of single micron-sized polystyrene beads in stationary and moving optical traps has proved to be quite successful in rationalizing the observed experimental data. The model, based on the overdamped Brownian dynamics of a particle in a harmonic potential that moves at a constant speed under a time-dependent force, is used to obtain an approximate expression for the distribution of the heat dissipated by the particle at long times. In this paper, we generalize the above model to consider particle dynamics in the presence of colored noise, without passing to the overdamped limit, as a way of modeling experimental situations in which the fluctuations of the medium exhibit long-lived temporal correlations, of the kind characteristic of polymeric solutions, for instance, or of similar viscoelastic fluids. Although we have not been able to find an expression for the heat distribution itself, we do obtain exact expressions for its mean and variance, both for the static and for the moving trap cases. These moments are valid for arbitrary times and they also hold in the inertial regime, but they reduce exactly to the results of Imparato et al. in appropriate limits. Using analysis-by-synthesis (AbS) approach, we develop a soft decision based switched vector quantization (VQ) method for high quality and low complexity coding of wideband speech line spectral frequency (LSF) parameters. For each switching region, a low complexity transform domain split VQ (TrSVQ) is designed. The overall rate-distortion (R/D) performance optimality of new switched quantizer is addressed in the Gaussian mixture model (GMM) based parametric framework. In the AbS approach, the reduction of quantization complexity is achieved through the use of nearest neighbor (NN) TrSVQs and splitting the transform domain vector into higher number of subvectors. Compared to the current LSF quantization methods, the new method is shown to provide competitive or better trade-off between R/D performance and complexity.

New A2+Mo4+O3 oxides for A = Mn, Co and Zn crystallizing in a defect spinel structure have been prepared by hydrogen-reduction of the corresponding AMoO4 oxides. X-ray powder diffraction intensity analysis of the zinc compound indicates that the cation distribution is (Zn)t[Zn1/3Mo4/3□1/3]oO4. The defect spinels are metastable decomposing to a mixture of A2Mo3O8 and AO at high temperatures. Electrical and magnetic properties of the spinel phases are reported.

Formal charge distributions in, and the electric dipole moments of, a few simple organogermanium compounds have been evaluated by the method of R. P. Smith et al. [J. Amer. Chem. Soc., 73(1951) 2263]. The difference between the experimental and calculated moments in the case of alkylhalogermanes is explained in terms of the pπ—dπ back bonding effect outweighing the electron releasing effect. In unsaturated compounds, the differences are attributed to possible mesmeric effects involving the expansion of the germanium valence shell.

An exact solution for the stresses in a transversely isotropic infinite thick plate having a circular hole and subjected to axisymmetric uniformly distributed load on the plane surfaces has been given. The solution is in the form of Fourier-Bessel series and integrals. Numerical results for the stresses are given using the elastic constants for magnesium, and are compared with the isotropic case.

Polyvanadate solutions obtained by extracting vanadium pentoxide with dilute alkali over a period of several hours contained increasing amounts of decavanadate as characterized by NMR and ir spectra. Those solutions having a metavanadate:decavanadate ratio in the range of 1-5 showed maximum stimulation of NADH oxidation by rat liver plasma membranes. Reduction of decavanadate, but not metavanadate, was obtained only in the presence of the plasma membrane enzyme system. High simulation of activity of NADH oxidation was obtained with a mixture of the two forms of vanadate and this further increased on lowering the pH. Addition of increasing concentrations of decavanadate to metavanadate and vice versa increased the stimulatory activity, reaching a maximum when the metavanadate:decavanadate ratio was in the range of 1-5. Increased stimulatory activity can also be obtained by reaching these ratios by conversion of decavanadate to metavanadate by alkaline phosphate degradation, and of metavanadate to decavanadate by acidification. These studies show for the first time that both deca and meta forms of vanadate present in polyvanadate solutions are needed for maximum activity of NADH oxidation.

We have shown previously that the Ca2+-specific fluorescent dyes chlortetracycline (CTC) and indo-1/AM can be used to distinguish between prestalk and prespore cells in Dictyostelium discoideum at a very early stage. In the present study, pre- and post-aggregative amoebae of Dictyostelium discoideum were labelled with CTC or indo-1 and their fluorescence monitored after being drawn into a fine glass capillary. The cells rapidly form two zones of Ca2+-CTC or Ca2+-indo-1 fluorescence. Anterior (air side) cells display a high level of fluorescence; the level drops in the middle portion of the capillary and rises again to a lesser extent in the posteriormost cells (oil side). When bounded by air on both sides, the cells display high fluorescence at both ends. When oil is present at both ends of the capillary, there is little fluorescence except for small regions at the ends. These outcomes are evident within a couple of minutes of the start of the experiment and the fluorescence pattern intensifies over the course of time. By using the indicator neutral red, as well as with CTC and indo-1, we show that a band displaying strong fluorescence moves away from the anterior end before stabilizing at the anterior-posterior boundary. We discuss our findings in relation to the role of Ca2+ in cell-type differentiation in Dictyostelium discoideum.

A survey of the marine gastropod genus Conus Linnaeus was conducted along the TamilNadu Coast of India to explore the regional geographic distribution and diversity. The 60 species observed increased the number of Indian Conidae from 77 to 81. Conus imperialis Linne, C. mitratus Hwass in Bruguiere, C. striolatus Kiener and C. violaceus Gmelin are newly recorded from the study area. Conus amadis Gmelin was the most widely distributed species. The highest diversity (48 species) occurred in the Gulf of Mannar, followed by 22 species from northern, six from southern, and five from the Palk Bay regions. We suggest that the rich diversity recorded in the Gulf of Mannar reflects the physical conditions, microhabitats and required resources such as food and shelter that favour the occurrence of the large number of Conus species.

Atomic layer deposition was used to obtain TiO2 thin films on Si (100) and fused quartz, using a novel metal organic precursor. The films were grown at 400 degrees C, varying the amount of oxygen used as the reactive gas. X-ray diffraction showed the films to be crystalline, with a mixture of anatase and rutile phases. To investigate their optical properties, ellipsometric measurements were made in the UV-Vis-NIR range (300-1700 nm). Spectral distribution of various optical constants like refractive index (n), absorption index (k), transmittance (T), reflectance (R), absorption (A) were calculated by employing Bruggemann's effective medium approximation (BEMA) and Maxwell-Garnet effective medium approximation, in conjunction with the Cauchy and Forouhi-Bloomer (FB) dispersion relations. A layered optical model has been proposed which gives the thickness, elemental and molecular composition, amorphicity and roughness (morphology) of the TiO2 film surface and and the film/substrate interface, as a function of oxygen flow rate The spectral distribution of the optical band gap (E-g(opt)), complex dielectric constants (epsilon' and epsilon''), and optical conductivity (sigma(opt)), has also been determined.

The effect of a particle size distribution on the fractional reaction has been analysed. The analysis shows that for non-isothermal TG the activation energy and frequency factor evaluated from the fractional reaction by conventional method depend on the particle size distribution, and this may lead to a kinetic compensating effect. Particle size distribution may also lead to an erroneous conclusion about the change in the mechanism of reaction.
