We present a study of the piezoresistivity in nanostructured. polycrystalline films of La0.67Ca0.33MnO3 and La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 grown on oxidized Si (100) substrates. We have observed that the hole doped rare-earth manganites, which are well known for being colossal magnetoresistive (CMR) show change in its resistance under uniaxial strain even at room temperature. The piezoresistance was measured at room temperature by bending the Si cantilevers (on which the film is grown) in flexural mode both with compressive and tensile strain. The resistance of the film increases with tensile strain and decreases with compressive strain. A large gauge factor of 15-20 is seen in these films at room temperature.

In this letter we characterize strain in Si1-xGex based heterojunction bipolar transistors and modulation doped field effect transistors grown by rapid thermal chemical vapor deposition exploiting the phenomenon of strain-induced birefringence. The technique used is multiple angle of incidence ellipsometry at a wavelength of 670 nm to measure the ordinary and extraordinary refractive indices of the Si1-xGex films. We report measurements on thin fully strained films (with thicknesses less than the critical thickness) with Ge concentration varying from 9% to 40% with an accuracy of the order of 1 part in 10(4) and propose an empirical relation between the difference in the ordinary and extraordinary refractive indices (deltan) and the Ge concentration (x) given by deltan(x)=0.18x-0.12x(2). The dielectric response of pulsed laser ablated barium strontium titanate thin films were studied as a function of frequency and ambient temperature (from room temperature to 320 degrees C) by employing impedance spectroscopy. Combined modulus and impedance spectroscopic plots were used to study the response of the film, which in general may contain the grain, grain boundary, and the electrode/film interface as capacitive elements. The spectroscopic plots revealed that the major response was due to the grains, while contributions from the grain boundary or the electrode/film interface was negligible. Further observation from the complex impedance plot showed data points lying on a single semicircle, implying the response originated from a single capacitive element corresponding to the bulk grains. Conductivity plots against frequency at different temperatures suggested a response obeying the 'universal power law'. The value of the activation energies computed from the Arrhenius plots of both ac and dc conductivities with 1000/T were 0.97 and 1.04 eV, respectively. This was found to be in excellent agreement with published literature, and was attributed to the motion of oxygen vacancies within the bulk. (C) 2000 American Institute of Physics. Compositionally up and downgraded Bi4-x/3Ti3-xVxO12 (x=0.0, 0.012,0.03, 0.06) thin films were grown on Pt coated silicon substrates by pulsed laser deposition technique. Downgraded fabrication showed improved ferroelectric polarization in comparison to upgraded fabrication. Films deposited at 650 and 700 degrees C showed very large remnant polarization (2P(r)) value of 82 mu C cm(-2), which is comparatively large among all bismuth based thin films reported so far. A mechanism based on vanadium enrich seeded layer formation in the downgraded structure is proposed for the improvement. Moreover, frequency independent behavior (100Hz-5kHz) of the graded films ensures its potential application for various microelectronic devices. (c) 2010 American Institute of Physics. Strained epitaxial La0.5Sr0.5CoO3 films are grown on LaAlO3 substrate. Structural, electrical, and magnetic measurements were carried out. Out of plane lattice parameter of the film undergoes compressive strain and the coercivity is enhanced. The zero field cooled (ZFC) magnetization curve for a field applied parallel to the film plane shows a jump, which suggests a spin reorientation transition (SRT), while ZFC magnetization for a field applied perpendicular to the film plane is featureless. This jump in magnetization is shifted to higher temperatures when the magnetic field is reduced. The SRT is attributed to the strain in the film. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Ni80Fe20 thin films with high orientation were grown on Si(1 0 0) using pulsed laser ablation. The anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) and the planar Hall measurements show a 2.5% resistance anisotropy and a 45% planar Hall voltage change for magnetic field sweep of 10 Oe. The planar Hall sensitivity dR/dH was found to be 900 Omega T-1 compared with a previously reported maximum of 340 Omega T-1 in the same system. Also these films are found to withstand repeated thermal cycling up to 110 degrees C and the Hall sensitivity remains constant within this temperature range. This combination of properties makes the system highly suitable for low magnetic field sensors, particularly in geomagnetic and biosensor applications. To elucidate this, we have demonstrated that these sensors are sensitive to Earth's magnetic field. These results are compared with the sputter deposited films which have a very low AMR and planar Hall voltage change as compared with the films grown by PLD. The possible reasons for these contrasting characteristics are also discussed.

A high contrast laser writing technique based on laser induced efficient chemical oxidation in insitu textured Ge films is demonstrated. Free running Nd-YAG laser pulses are used for irradiating the films. The irradiation effects have been characterised using optical microscopy, electron spectroscopy and microdensitometry. The mechanism for the observed contrast has been identified as due to formation of GeO2 phase upon laser irradiation using X-ray initiated Auger spectroscopy (XAES) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The contrast in the present films is found to be nearly five times more than that known due to GeO phase formation in similar films.

The properties of thin films depend to a large extent upon their mechanical stability which in turn is dependent on the intrinsic stresses developed during evaporation. This paper describes a simple method for the measurement of stresses in thin films by the use of real-time holographic interferometry.

Antiferroelectricity of sol-gel grown pure and La modified PbZrO3 thin films, with a maximum extent of 6 mol%, has been characterized by temperature dependent P-E hysteresis loops within the applied electric field of 60 MV/m. It has been seen that on extent of La modification electric field induced phase transformation can be altered and at 40 degrees C its maximum value has been observed at +/- 38 MV/m on 6 mol% modifications whereas the minimum value is +/- 22 MV/m on 1 mol%. On La modification the variation of electric field induced phase transformations at 40 degrees C has been correlated with the temperature of ntiferroelectric phase condensation on cooling. The critical electric fields for saturated P-E hysteresis loops have been defined from field dependent maximum polarizations and their variations on La modification show a similar trend as found in their dielectric phase transition temperatures. Cubic pyrochlore Bi1.5Zn1.0Nb1.5O7 thin films were deposited by pulsed laser ablation on Pt(200)/SiO2/Si at 500, 550, 600, and 650 degrees C. The thin films with (222) preferred orientation were found to grow at 650 degrees C with better crystallinity which was established by the lowest full-width half maxima of similar to 0.38. The dielectric response of the thin films grown at 650 degrees C have been characterized within a temperature range of 270-650 K and a frequency window of 0.1-100 kHz. The dielectric dispersion in the thin films shows a Maxwell-Wagner type relaxation with two different kinds of response confirmed by temperature dependent Nyquist plots. The ac conduction of the films showed a varied behavior in two different frequency regions. The power law exponent values of more than 1 at high frequency are explained by a jump-relaxation-model. The possibility of grain boundary related large polaronic hopping, due to two different power law exponents and transformation of double to single response in Nyquist plots at high temperature, has been excluded. The ``attempt jump frequency'' obtained from temperature dependent tangent loss and real part of dielectric constants, has been found to lie in the range of their lattice vibronic frequencies (10(12)-10(13) Hz). The activation energy arising from a large polaronic hopping due to trapped charge at low frequency region has been calculated from the ac conduction behavior. The range of activation energies (0.26-0.59. eV) suggests that the polaronic hopping at low frequency is mostly due to oxygen vacancies. (C) 2010 American Institute of Physics. doi:10.106311.3457335]

The dielectric response of pulsed laser ablated Bi-1 Zn-5(1) Nb-0(1) O-5(7) (BZN) thin films are investigated within the temperature range of 300-660 K and frequency range of 100 Hz-100 kHz Thin film exhibited a strong dielectric relaxation behavior A sharp rise in dielectric constant of BZN thin film at high temperatures is related to disorder in canon and anion lattices Observed dielectric relaxation implies a redistribution of charges within the unit cell This phenomenon suggests that the large change in dielectric constant is due to a dynamical rise of dipolar fluctuations in the unit cell XPS spectra of BZN (A(2)B(2)O(6)O') cubic pyrochlore confirm that the relaxation corresponds to the ionic hopping among the A and O' positions of several local potential minima Barrier height for hopping is distributed between 0 and 0 94 eV The O is spectrum confirms presence of two types of oxygen in BZN thin film The disorder in charge neutralized thin film is correlated with XPS spectra (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd All rights reserved

An optical microscopy study of stress relief patterns in diamondlike carbon films is presented. Interesting stress relief patterns are observed which include the well known sinusoidal type, branching pattern and string of beads pattern. The last one is shown to relieve stresses under marginal conditions. Two new stress relief patterns are noted in the present study. One of them is of a sinusoidal shape with two extra branches at every peak position. The distribution of different stress relief forms from the outer edge of the films towards the interior is markedly dependent on film thickness. Our new patterns support the approach in which the stress relief forms have been analysed earlier using the theory of plate buckling.

A kinetic model has been developed for dislocation bending at the growth surface in compressively stressed low-mobility films such as III-V nitrides. It is based on a reduction in the number of atoms at the growth surface. Stress and nonstress sources of driving force for such a reduction are discussed. A comparison between the derived equations and experimentally measured stress evolution data yields good agreement between the predicted and observed angles through which dislocations bend.
