NMR spectra of molecules oriented in liquid-crystalline matrix provide information on the structure and orientation of the molecules. Thermotropic liquid crystals used as an orienting media result in the spectra of spins that are generally strongly coupled. The number of allowed transitions increases rapidly with the increase in the number of interacting spins. Furthermore, the number of single quantum transitions required for analysis is highly redundant. In the present study, we have demonstrated that it is possible to separate the subspectra of a homonuclear dipolar coupled spin system on the basis of the spin states of the coupled heteronuclei by multiple quantum (MQ)−single quantum (SQ) correlation experiments. This significantly reduces the number of redundant transitions, thereby simplifying the analysis of the complex spectrum. The methodology has been demonstrated on the doubly 13C labeled acetonitrile aligned in the liquid-crystal matrix and has been applied to analyze the complex spectrum of an oriented six spin system.

Three-dimensional (3D) resolution improvement in multi-photon multiple-excitation-spot-optical microscopy is proposed. Specially designed spatial filter is employed for improving the overall 3D resolution of the imaging system. An improvement up to a factor of 14.5 and sub-femto liter volume excitation is achieved. The system shows substantial sidelobe reduction (<4%) due to the non-linear intensity dependence of multiphoton process. Polarization effect on x-oriented and freely rotating dipoles shows dramatic change in the field distribution at the focal-plane. The resulting point-spread function has the ability to produce several strongly localized polarization dependent field patterns which may find applications in optical engineering and bioimaging.

In this paper we report resonance Raman scattering from graphite covering excitation energies in the range 2.4 eV to 6 eV. The Raman excitation profile shows a maximum at 4.94 eV (lambda = 251nm) for the G - band (1582 cm(-1)). The D-band at similar to 1350 cm(-1), attributed to disorder activated Raman scattering, does not show up in Raman spectra recorded with excitation wavelengths smaller than 257.3 nm, revealing that the resonance enhancements of the G and D-modes are widely different. Earlier Raman measurements in carbon materials have also revealed a very large and unusual dependence of the D - mode frequency on excitation laser wavelength. This phenomenon is also observed in carbon nanotubes. In this paper we show for the first time that the above unusual dependence arises from the disorder - induced double resonance mechanism.

We propose fundamental improvements in three-dimensional (3D) resolution of multiple excitation spot optical microscopy. The excitation point spread function (PSF) is generated by two interfering counter-propagating depth-of-focus beams along the optical axis. Detection PSF is obtained by coherently interfering the emitted fluorescent light (collected by both the objectives) at the detector. System PSF shows upto 14-fold reduction in focal volume as compared to confocal, and almost 2-fold improvement in lateral resolution. Proposed PSF has the ability to simultaneously excite multiple 3D-spots of sub-femtoliter volume. Potential applications are in fluorescence microscopy and nanobioimaging. Copyright 2011 Author(s). A remarkable hardening (similar to 30 cm(-1)) of the normal mode of vibration associated with the symmetric stretching of the oxygen octahedra for the Ba2FeReO6 and Sr2CrReO6 double perovskites is observed below the corresponding magnetic ordering temperatures. The very large magnitude of this effect and its absence for the antisymmetric stretching mode provide evidence against a conventional spin-phonon coupling mechanism. Our observations are consistent with a collective excitation formed by the combination of the vibrational mode with oscillations of Fe or Cr 3d and Re 5d occupations and spin magnitudes.

Recently, we have reported theoretical studies on the rate of energy transfer from an electronically excited molecule to graphene. It was found that graphene is a very efficient quencher of the electronically excited states and that the rate infinity z(-4). The process was found to be effective up to 30 nm which is well beyond the traditional FRET limit. In this report, we study the transfer of an amount of energy (h) over bar Omega from a dye molecule to doped graphene. We find a crossover of the distance dependence of the rate from z(-4) to exponential as the Fermi level is increasingly shifted into the conduction band, with the crossover occurring at a shift of the Fermi level by an amount (h) over bar Omega/2.

The H-1 NMR spectroscopic discrimination of enantiomers in the solution state and the measurement of enantiomeric composition is most often hindered due to either very small chemical shift differences between the discriminated peaks or severe overlap of transitions from other chemically non-equivalent protons. In addition the use of chiral auxiliaries such as, crown ether and chiral lanthanide shift reagent may often cause enormous line broadening or give little degree of discrimination beyond the crown ether substrate ratio, hampering the discrimination. In circumventing such problems we are proposing the utilization of the difference in the additive values of all the chemical shifts of a scalar coupled spin system. The excitation and detection of appropriate highest quantum coherence yields the measurable difference in the frequencies between two transitions, one pertaining to each enantiomer in the maximum quantum dimension permitting their discrimination and the F-2 cross section at each of these frequencies yields an enantiopure spectrum. The advantage of the utility of the proposed method is demonstrated on several chiral compounds where the conventional one dimensional H-1 NMR spectra fail to differentiate the enantiomers.

In this paper, we propose a new sub-band approach to estimate the glottal activity. The method is based on the spectral harmonicity and the sub-band temporal properties of voiced speech. We propose a method to represent glottal excitation signal using sub-band temporal envelope. Instants of maximum glottal excitation or Glottal Closure Instants (GCI) are extracted from the estimated glottal excitation pattern and the result is compared with a standard GCI computation method, DYPSA [1]. The performance of the algorithm is also compared for the noisy signal and it is shown that the proposed method is less variant to GCI estimation under noisy conditions compared to DYPSA. The algorithm is evaluated on the CMU-ARCTIC database.

Wafer/microcrystallites of oxidized Ge with holes/nanoholes synthesized by thermal oxidation strategy from Ge wafer/microcrystallites can convert one wavelength to another. Both oxidized Ge wafer and microcrystallites shows excitation- and power-dependent luminescence. Red-shift is observed as the excitation wavelength is increased, while blue-shift is observed as power density is increased. Over all, blue-green-yellow-orange luminescence is observed depending on the excitation wavelength and the morphology of oxidized Ge. The various defects level associated with germanium-oxygen vacancies in GeO2 and Ge/GeO2 interface are responsible for the excitation-dependent luminescence. Being a light-conversion material, oxidized Ge is expected to find potential applications in solid-state lighting, photovoltaic devices and photocatalysis.

We suggest a method of studying coherence in finite-level systems coupled to the environment and use it for the Hamiltonian that has been used to describe the light-harvesting pigment-protein complex. The method works with the adiabatic states and transforms the Hamiltonian to a form in which the terms responsible for decoherence and population relaxation are separated out. Decoherence is then accounted for nonperturbatively and population relaxation using a Markovian master equation. Almost analytical results can be obtained for the seven-level system, and the calculations are very simple for systems with more levels. We apply the treatment to the seven-level system, and the results are in excellent agreement with the exact numerical results of Nalbach et al. Nalbach, Braun, and Thorwart, Phys. Rev. E 84, 041926 (2011)]. Our approach is able to account for decoherence and population relaxation separately. It is found that decoherence causes only damping of oscillations and does not lead to transfer to the reaction center. Population relaxation is necessary for efficient transfer to the reaction center, in agreement with earlier findings. Our results show that the transformation to the adiabatic basis followed by a Redfield type of approach leads to results in good agreement with exact simulation.

A simple method to study the air bubble dynamics and to burst the air bubbles formed on the electrode– electrolyte interface in a parallel gate electrode fluidic channel is demonstrated. Upon application of a voltage across the electrodes, volume of water contained between them begins to electrolyzing depending on the conductivity, as well as it boils due to heating effect. This results in bubble formation within. These bubbles grow in radius with higher potential difference applied across the electrodes. As an approach towards removing these bubbles, an alternating current is applied at low potential difference of a 5 volts and high frequency at few megahertz. The alternating electric field had a heating effect on the bubbles where the energy input due to current heats up water and bursts the bubble. The bubbles of size up to 480μm were burst at 2500 V/m using this approach.

CaTiO3:Sm3+ (1-11 mol%) nanophosphors were successfully synthesized by a low temperature solution combustion method LCS]. The structural and morphological properties of the phosphors were studied by using Powder X-ray diffractometer (PXRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray photo electron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). TEM studies indicate that the size of the phosphor is similar to 20-35 nm. Photoluminescence (PL) properties of Sm3+ (1-11 mol%) doped CaTiO3 for NUV excitation (407 nm) was studied in order to investigate the possibility of its use in White light emitting diode (WLED) applications. The emission spectra consists of intra 4f transitions of Sm3+, such as (4)G(5/2) -> H-6(5/2) (561 nm), (4)G(5/2) -> H-6(7/2) (601-611 nm), (4)G(5/2) -> H-6(9/2) (648 nm) and (4)G(5/2) -> H-6(11/2) (703 nm) respectively. Further, the emission at 601-611 nm show strong orange-red emission and can be applied to the orange-red emission of phosphor for the application for near ultra violet (NUV) excitation. Thermoluminescence (TL) of the samples irradiated with gamma source in the dose range 100-500 Gy was recorded at a heating rate of 5 degrees C s(-1). Two well resolved glow peaks at 164 degrees C and 214 degrees C along with shouldered peak at 186 degrees C were recorded. TL intensity increases up to 300 Gy and thereafter, it decreases with further increase of dose. The kinetic parameters namely activation energy (E), frequency factor (s) and order of kinetics were estimated and results were discussed in detail. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The photoluminescence (PL) of ZnO is shown to be dependent on the excitation intensity (EI) of the laser, and the substantial shift observed in the band to band transition is attributed to the heating effect. In order to understand this phenomenon in detail, we investigate the EI dependent PL of various ZnO samples systematically from liquid nitrogen (LN) to room temperature by varying the laser power. Some of the samples exhibit substantial red shift in the band to band transition with increasing EI even in LN environment, negligible effect is observed for others. Hence, our results strongly suggest that the EI dependent PL is not a characteristic of all ZnO samples. This indicates that laser-induced heating effect is not the dominant factor that governs the shifts in the PL spectra. Rather, the defect level excitation accounts for such observation. We report inelastic light scattering experiments on superconductor Ce0.6Y0.4FeAsO0.8F0.2 from 4K to 300K covering the superconducting transition temperature T-c similar to 48.6K. A strong evidence of the superconductivity induced phonon renormalization for the A(1g) phonon mode near 150cm(-1) associated with the Ce/Y vibrations is observed as reflected in the anomalous red-shift and decrease in the linewidth below T-c. Invoking the coupling of this mode with the superconducting gap, the superconducting gap (2 Delta) at zero temperature is estimated to be similar to 20meV i.e the ratio 2 Delta(0)/k(B)T(c) is similar to 5, suggesting Ce0.6Y0.4FeAsO0.8F0.2 to belong to the class of strong coupling superconductors. In addition, the mode near 430cm(-1) associated with Ce3+ crystal field excitation also shows anomalous increase in its linewidth below T-c suggesting strong coupling between crystal field excitation and the superconducting quasi-particles.

We propose two-photon excitation-based light-sheet technique for nano-lithography. The system consists of 2 -configured cylindrical lens system with a common geometrical focus. Upon superposition, the phase-matched counter-propagating light-sheets result in the generation of identical and equi spaced nano-bump pattern. Study shows a feature size of as small as few tens of nanometers with a inter-bump distance of few hundred nanometers. This technique overcomes some of the limitations of existing nano-lithography techniques, thereby, may pave the way for mass-production of nano-structures. Potential applications can also be found in optical microscopy, plasmonics, and nano-electronics. Microsc. Res. Tech. 78:1-7, 2015. (c) 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
