The conductivity of highly doped polypyrrole is less than that of intermediately doped samples, by two orders of magnitude, at 4.2 K. This may be due to more number of bipolarons in highly doped samples. Bipolarons require four times more activation energy than single polarons to hop by thermally induced virtual transitions to intermediate dissociated polaron states than by the nondissociated process. The conduction process in these polyconjugated systems involve ionization from deep trapped states, having a View the MathML source dependence, hopping from localised states, having View the MathML source dependence, and intersite tunnel percolation, having T−1 dependence. The interplay of these factors leads to a better fit by View the MathML source. The mechanism for this exponential behaviour need not be same as that of Motts variable range hopping. Conduction by percolation is possible, if an infinite cluster of chains can be connected by impurity centers created by dopant ions. The tendency for the saturation of conductivity at very low temperatures is due to the possibility of intersite tunnel percolation is disordered polaronic systems.

A new deep level transient spectroscopy technique is suggested which allows the deep level parameters to be obtained from a single temperature scan. Using large ratio t2/t1 of the measurement gate positions t1 and t2 and analyzing the steep high‐temperature side of the peak, it is demonstrated that the deep level activation energy can be determined with high accuracy.

The convective available potential energy (CAFE) based on monthly mean sounding has been shown to be relevant to deep convection in the tropics. The variation of CAFE with SST has been found to be similar to the variation of the frequency of deep convection at one station each in the tropical Atlantic and W. Pacific oceans. This suggests a strong link between the frequency of tropical convection and CAFE. It has been shown that CAFE so derived can be interpreted as the work potential of the atmosphere above the boundary layer with ascent in the convective region and subsidence in the surrounding cloud-free region.

In this paper we consider an N x N non-blocking, space division ATM switch with input cell queueing. At each input, the cell arrival process comprises geometrically distributed bursts of consecutive cells for the various outputs. Motivated by the fact that some input links may be connected to metropolitan area networks, and others directly to B-ISDN terminals, we study the situation where there are two classes of inputs with different values of mean burst length. We show that when inputs contend for an output, giving priority to an input with smaller expected burst length yields a saturation throughput larger than if the reverse priority is given. Further, giving priority to less bursty traffic can give better throughput than if all the inputs were occupied by this less bursty traffic. We derive the asymptotic (as N --> infinity) saturation throughputs for each priority class.

An attempt was made to study the deep level impurities and defects introduced into thyristor grade silicon under different processing conditions. DLTS, C-V and I-V measurements were carried out. The ideality factors of the diodes is around 1-7. Activation energy, trap density and minority carrier lifetime were measured.

We propose a new method for evaluating the adsorbed phase volume during physisorption of several gases on activated carbon specimens. We treat the adsorbed phase as another equilibrium phase which satisfies the Gibbs equation and hence assume that the law of rectilinear diameters is applicable. Since invariably the bulk gas phase densities are known along measured isotherms, the constants of the adsorbed phase volume can be regressed from the experimental data. We take the Dubinin-Astakhov isotherm as the model for verifying our hypothesis since it is one of the few equations that accounts for adsorbed phase volume changes. In addition, the pseudo-saturation pressure in the supercritical region is calculated by letting the index of the temperature term in Dubinin's equation to be temperature dependent. Based on over 50 combinations of activated carbons and adsorbates (nitrogen, oxygen, argon, carbon dioxide, hydrocarbons and halocarbon refrigerants) it is observed that the proposed changes fit experimental data quite well.

An entirely different approach for localisation of winding deformation based on terminal measurements is presented. Within the context of this study, winding deformation means, a discrete and specific change externally imposed at a particular position on the winding. The proposed method is based on pre-computing and plotting the complex network-function loci e.g. driving-point impedance (DPI)] at a selected frequency, for a meaningful range of values for each element (increasing and decreasing) of the ladder network which represents the winding. This loci diagram is called the nomogram. After introducing a discrete change, amplitude and phase of DPI are measured. By plotting this single measurement on the nomogram, it is possible to estimate the location and identify the extent of change. In contrast to the existing approach, the proposed method is fast, non-iterative and yields reasonably good localisation. Experimental results for actual transformer windings (interleaved and continuous disc) are presented.

The statistically steady humidity distribution resulting from an interaction of advection, modelled as an uncorrelated random walk of moist parcels on an isentropic surface, and a vapour sink, modelled as immediate condensation whenever the specific humidity exceeds a specified saturation humidity, is explored with theory and simulation. A source supplies moisture at the deep-tropical southern boundary of the domain and the saturation humidity is specified as a monotonically decreasing function of distance from the boundary. The boundary source balances the interior condensation sink, so that a stationary spatially inhomogeneous humidity distribution emerges. An exact solution of the Fokker-Planck equation delivers a simple expression for the resulting probability density function (PDF) of the wate-rvapour field and also the relative humidity. This solution agrees completely with a numerical simulation of the process, and the humidity PDF exhibits several features of interest, such as bimodality close to the source and unimodality further from the source. The PDFs of specific and relative humidity are broad and non-Gaussian. The domain-averaged relative humidity PDF is bimodal with distinct moist and dry peaks, a feature which we show agrees with middleworld isentropic PDFs derived from the ERA interim dataset. A deep‐level transient spectroscopy (DLTS) technique is reported for determining the capture cross‐section activation energy directly. Conventionally, the capture activation energy is obtained from the temperature dependence of the capture cross section. Capture cross‐section measurement is often very doubtful due to many intrinsic errors and is more critical for nonexponential capture kinetics. The essence of this technique is to use an emission pulse to allow the defects to emit electrons and the transient signal from capture process due to a large capture barrier was analyzed, in contrast with the emission signal in conventional DLTS. This technique has been applied for determining the capture barrier for silicon‐related DX centers in AlxGa1−xAs for different AlAs mole fractions.

Barium zirconium titanate [Ba(Zr0.05Ti0.95)O3, BZT] thin films were prepared by pulsed laser ablation technique and dc leakage current conduction behavior was extensively studied. The dc leakage behavior study is essential, as it leads to degradation of the data storage devices. The current-voltage (I-V) of the thin films showed an Ohmic behavior for the electric field strength lower than 7.5 MV/m. Nonlinearity in the current density-voltage (J-V) behavior has been observed at an electric field above 7.5 MV/m. Different conduction mechanisms have been thought to be responsible for the overall I-V characteristics of BZT thin films. The J-V behavior of BZT thin films was found to follow Lampert’s theory of space charge limited conduction similar to what is observed in an insulator with charge trapping moiety. The Ohmic and trap filled limited regions have been explicitly observed in the J-V curves, where the saturation prevailed after a voltage of 6.5 V referring the onset of a trap-free square region. Two different activation energy values of 1.155 and 0.325 eV corresponding to two different regions have been observed in the Arrhenius plot, which was attributed to two different types of trap levels present in the film, namely, deep and shallow traps.

With the increasing use of extra high-voltage transmission in power system expansion, the manufacturers of power apparatus and the electric utilities are studying the nature of overvoltages in power systems due to lightning and, in particular, switching operations. For such analyses, knowledge of the natural frequencies of the windings of transformers under a wide variety of conditions is important. The work reported by the author in a previous paper is extended and equivalent circuits have been developed to represent several sets of terminal conditions. These equivalent circuits can be used to determine the natural frequencies and transient voltages in the windings. Comparison of the measured and the computed results obtained with a model transformer indicates that they are in good agreement. Hence, this method of analysis provides a satisfactory procedure for the estimation of natural frequencies and transient voltages in transformer windings.

Natural frequencies and surge response of the windings of 3-phase transformers have been determined in the past by neglecting the capacitive and inductive couplings between the phase windings. This paper shows that these assumptions are not valid and presents a new method of formulating equivalent networks of 3-phase transformer windings for the various winding connections and terminal conditions. By utilizing these equivalent networks the natural frequencies and surge response of the windings can be determined. Tests made on a model transformer showed good correlation with calculated results.

A novel procedure to determine the series capacitance of a transformer winding, based on frequency-response measurements, is reported. It is based on converting the measured driving-point impedance magnitude response into a rational function and thereafter exploiting the ratio of a specific coefficient in the numerator and denominator polynomial, which leads to the direct estimation of series capacitance. The theoretical formulations are derived for a mutually coupled ladder-network model, followed by sample calculations. The results obtained are accurate and its feasibility is demonstrated by experiments on model-coil and on actual, single, isolated transformer windings (layered, continuous disc, and interleaved disc). The authors believe that the proposed method is the closest one can get to indirectly measuring series capacitance.
