The synthesis, hydrogelation, and aggregation-induced emission switching of the phenylenedivinylene bis-N-octyl pyridinium salt is described. Hydrogelation occurs as a consequence of pi-stacking, van der Waals, and electrostatic interactions that lead to a high gel melting temperature and significant mechanical properties at a very low weight percentage of the gelator. A morphology transition from fiber-to-coil-to-tube was observed depending on the concentration of the gelator. Variation in the added salt type, salt concentrations, or temperature profoundly influenced the order of aggregation of the gelator molecules in aqueous solution. Formation of a novel chromophore assembly in this way leads to an aggregation-induced switch of the emission colors. The emission color switches from sky blue to white to orange depending upon the extent of aggregation through mere addition of external inorganic salts. Remarkably, the salt effect on the assembly of such cationic phenylenedivinylenes in water follow the behavior predicted from the well-known Hofmeister effects. Mechanistic insights for these aggregation processes were obtained through the counterion exchange studies. The aggregation-induced emission switching that leads to a room-temperature white-light emission from a single chromophore in a single solvent (water) is highly promising for optoelectronic applications.

The q-Gaussian distribution results from maximizing certain generalizations of Shannon entropy under some constraints. The importance of q-Gaussian distributions stems from the fact that they exhibit power-law behavior, and also generalize Gaussian distributions. In this paper, we propose a Smoothed Functional (SF) scheme for gradient estimation using q-Gaussian distribution, and also propose an algorithm for optimization based on the above scheme. Convergence results of the algorithm are presented. Performance of the proposed algorithm is shown by simulation results on a queuing model.

In this paper, a current error space vector (CESV)-based hysteresis current controller for a multilevel 12-sided voltage space vector-based inverter-fed induction motor (IM) drive is proposed. The proposed controller gives a nearly constant switching frequency operation throughout different speeds in the linear modulation region. It achieves the elimination of 6n +/- 1, n = odd harmonics from the phase voltages and currents in the entire modulation range, with an increase in the linear modulation range. It also exhibits fast dynamic behavior under different transient conditions and has a simple controller implementation. Nearly constant switching frequency is obtained by matching the steady-state CESV boundaries of the proposed controller with that of a constant switching frequency SVPWM-based drive. In the proposed controller, the CESV reference boundaries are computed online, using the switching dwell time and voltage error vector of each applied vector. These quantities are calculated from estimated sampled reference phase voltages. Vector change is decided by projecting the actual current error along the computed hysteresis space vector boundary of the presently applied vector. The estimated reference phase voltages are found from the stator current error ripple and the parameters of the IM.

This paper reports analytical modeling, simulation and experimental validation for switching and release times of an electrostatically actuated micromachined switch. Presented work is an extension of our earlier work [1] that analytically argued, and numerically and experimentally demonstrated, why pull-in time is larger that pull-up time when the actuation voltage is less than twice of the pull-in voltage. In this paper, switching dynamics is investigated under the influence of squeeze-film damping. Tests were performed on SOI (silicon-on-insulator) based parallel beams structures.Typical voltage requirement for actuation is in the range of 10-30 V. All the experiments were performed in normal atmospheric pressure. Measurement results confirm that the quality factor Q has appreciable effect on the release time compared to the switching time. The quality factor Q is extracted from the response measurement and compared with the ANSYS simulation result. In addition, the dynamic pull-in effect has also been studied and reported in this paper. A contribution of this work includes the effect of various phenomena such as squeeze-film damping, dynamic pull-in, and frequency pull-in effects on the switching dynamics of a MEMS switch.

Bulk Ge15Te85-xIn5Agx glasses are shown to exhibit electrical switching with switching/threshold voltages in the range of 70-120V for a sample thickness of 0.3 mm. Further, the samples exhibit threshold or memory behavior depending on the ON state current. The compositional studies confirm the presence of an intermediate phase in the range 8 <= x <= 16, revealed earlier by thermal studies. Further, SET-RESET studies have been performed by these glasses using a triangular pulse of 6 mA amplitude (for SET) and 21 mA amplitude (for RESET). Raman studies of the samples after the SET and RESET operations reveal that the SET state is a crystalline phase which is obtained by thermal annealing and the RESET state is the glassy state, similar to the as-quenched samples. It is interesting to note that the samples in the intermediate phase, especially compositions at x = 10, 12, and 14 withstand more set-reset cycles. This indicates compositions in the intermediate phase are better suited for phase change memory applications. (C) 2014 AIP Publishing LLC.
Investigation of schemes for incorporating generator Q limits in the fast decoupled load flow method
Resumo:
Fast Decoupled Load Flow (FDLF) is a very popular and widely used power flow analysis method because of its simplicity and efficiency. Even though the basic FDLF algorithm is well investigated, the same is not true in the case of additional schemes/modifications required to obtain adjusted load flow solutions using the FDLF method. Handling generator Q limits is one such important feature needed in any practical load flow method. This paper presents a comprehensive investigation of two classes of schemes intended to handle this aspect i.e. the bus type switching scheme and the sensitivity scheme. We propose two new sensitivity based schemes and assess their performance in comparison with the existing schemes. In addition, a new scheme to avoid the possibility of anomalous solutions encountered while using the conventional schemes is also proposed and evaluated. Results from extensive simulation studies are provided to highlight the strengths and weaknesses of these existing and proposed schemes, especially from the point of view of reliability.

The solvent plays a decisive role in the photochemistry and photophysics of aromatic ketones. Xanthone (XT) is one such aromatic ketone and its triplet-triplet (T-T) absorption spectra show intriguing solvatochromic behavior. Also, the reactivity of XT towards H-atom abstraction shows an unprecedented decrease in protic solvents relative to aprotic solvents. Therefore, a comprehensive solvatochromic analysis of the triplet-triplet absorption spectra of XT was carried out in conjunction with time dependent density functional theory using the ad hoc explicit solvent model approach. A detailed solvatochromic analysis of the T-T absorption bands of XT suggests that the hydrogen bonding interactions are different in the corresponding triplet excited states. Furthermore, the contributions of non-specific and hydrogen bonding interactions towards differential solvation of the triplet states in protic solvents were found to be of equal magnitude. The frontier molecular orbital and electron density difference analysis of the T-1 and T-2 states of XT indicates that the charge redistribution in these states leads to intermolecular hydrogen bond strengthening and weakening, respectively, relative to the S-0 state. This is further supported by the vertical excitation energy calculations of the XT-methanol supra-molecular complex. The intermolecular hydrogen bonding potential energy curves obtained for this complex in the S-0, T-1, and T-2 states support the model. In summary, we propose that the different hydrogen bonding mechanisms exhibited by the two lowest triplet excited states of XT result in a decreasing role of the n pi* triplet state, and are thus responsible for its reduced reactivity towards H-atom abstraction in protic solvents. A detailed study was undertaken to characterize the deformation behavior of a superplastic 3 mol% yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia (3YTZ) over a wide range of strain rates, temperatures and grain sizes. The experimental data were analyzed in terms of the following equation for high temperature deformation: Image Full-size image ∞ σn d−pexp(−Q/RT), where Image Full-size image is the strain rate, σ is the flow stress, d is the grain size, Q is the activation energy, R is the gas constant, T is the absolute temperature, and n and p are constants termed the stress exponent and the inverse grain size exponent, respectively. The experimental data over a wide range of stresses revealed a transition in stress exponent. Deformation in the low and high stress regions was associated with n not, vert, similar 3 and p not, vert, similar 1, and n not, vert, similar 2 and p not, vert, similar 3, respectively. The transition stress between the two regions decreased with increasing grain size. The activation energy was similar for both regions with a value of not, vert, similar 550 kJ mol−1. Microstructural measurements revealed that grains remained essentially equiaxed after the accumulation of large strains, and very limited concurrent grain growths occurred in most experiments. Assessment of possible rate controlling creep mechanisms and comparison with previous studied indicate that in the n not, vert, similar 2 region, deformation occurs by a grain boundary sliding process whose rate is independent of impurity content. Deformation in the n not, vert, similar 3 region is controlled by an interface reaction that is highly sensitive to impurity content. It is concluded that an increase in impurity content increases yttrium segregation to grain boundaries, which enhances the rate of the interface reaction, thereby decreasing the apparent transition stress between the n not, vert, similar 2 and n not, vert, similar 3 regions. This unified approach incorporating two sequential mechanisms can rationalize many of the apparently dissimilar results that have been reported previously for deformation of 3YTZ.

Using an iterative sequence of Wittig olefination, reduction, oxidation, and condensation of an active methylene group to carbonyl, it was possible to prepare a series of organometallic push-pull molecules [(CO)(5)M=C(OCH3)(-CH=CH-)(n)(C5H4)Fe(C5H5), M = W, Cr, n = 1-4] in which ferrocene is the donor element and a Fisher carbene moeity is the acceptor group. The molecular first hyperpolarizability beta was determined by hyper-Rayleigh scattering experiments. The beta values ranged from 110 x 10(-30) to 2420 x 10(-30) esu in acetonitrile, and they are among the highest reported for organometallic molecules so far. Electrochemical measurements are consistent with the push-pull nature of these compounds.

The near-critical behavior of the susceptibility deduced from light-scattering measurements in a ternary liquid mixture of 3-methylpyridine, water, and sodium bromide has been determined. The measurements have been performed in the one-phase region near the lower consolute points of samples with different concentrations of sodium bromide. A crossover from Ising asymptotic behavior to mean-field behavior has been observed. As the concentration of sodium bromide increases, the crossover becomes more pronounced, and the crossover temperature shifts closer to the critical temperature. The data are well described by a model that contains two independent crossover parameters. The crossover of the susceptibility critical exponent γ from its Ising value γ=1.24 to the mean-field value γ=1 is sharp and nonmonotonic. We conclude that there exists an additional length scale in the system due to the presence of the electrolyte which competes with the correlation length of the concentration fluctuations. An analogy with crossover phenomena in polymer solutions and a possible connection with multicritical phenomena is discussed.

Manganitelike double perovskite Sr2TiMnO6 (STMO) ceramics fabricated from the powders synthesized via the solid-state reaction route, exhibited dielectric constants as high as similar to 10(5) in the low frequency range (100 Hz-10 kHz) at room temperature. The Maxwell-Wagner type of relaxation mechanism was found to be more appropriate to rationalize such high dielectric constant values akin to that observed in materials such as KxTiyNi(1-x-y)O and CaCu3Ti4O12. The dielectric measurements carried out on the samples with different thicknesses and electrode materials reflected the influence of extrinsic effects. The impedance studies (100 Hz-10 MHz) in the 180-300 K temperature range revealed the presence of two dielectric relaxations corresponding to the grain boundary and the electrode. The dielectric response of the grain boundary was found to be weakly dependent on the dc bias field (up to 11 V/cm). However, owing to the electrode polarization, the applied ac/dc field had significant effect on the low frequency dielectric response. At low temperatures (100-180 K), the dc conductivity of STMO followed a variable range hopping behavior. Above 180 K, it followed the Arrhenius behavior because of the thermally activated conduction process. The bulk conductivity relaxation owing to the localized hopping of charge carriers obeyed the typical universal dielectric response.

This is the first comprehensive report on the calculation of segment size, which signifies the asic unit of flow in long chain plasticizing liquids, by a novel multi-pronged approach. Unlike, low molecular weight liquids and high polymer melts these complex long chain liquids encompasses the least understood domain of the liquid state. In the present work the flow behaviour of carboxylate ester (300-900 Da) has been explained through segmental motion taking into account the independence of molecular weight region. The segment size have been calculated by various methods based on satistical thermodynamics, molecular dynamics and group additivity nd their merits analysed.

Studies on melt rheological properties of blends of low density polyethylene (LDPE) with selected grades of linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE), which differ widely in their melt flow indices, are reported, The data obtained in a capillary rheometer are presented to describe the effects of blend composition and shear rate on flow behavior index, melt viscosity, and melt elasticity. In general, blending of LLDPE I that has a low melt flow index (2 g/10 min) with LDPE results in a decrease of its melt viscosity, processing temperature, and the tendency of extrudate distortion, depending on blending ratio. A blending ratio around 20-30% LLDPE I seems optimum from the point of view of desirable improvement in processability behavior. On the other hand, blending of LLDPE II that has a high melt flow index (10 g/10 min) with LDPE offers a distinct advantage in increasing the pseudoplasticity of LDPE/LLDPE II blends.

Polycrystalline films of SrBi2Nb2O9 were grown using pulsed-laser ablation. The ferroelectric properties were achieved by low-temperature deposition followed by a subsequent annealing process. The lower switching voltage was obtained by lowering the thickness, which did not affect the insulating nature of the films. The hysteresis results showed an excellent square-shaped loop with results (P-r=6 mu C/cm(2), E-c=100 kV/cm) in good agreement with earlier reports. The films also exhibited a dielectric constant of 250 and a dissipation factor of 0.02. The transport studies indicated an ohmic behavior, while higher voltages induced a bulk space charge.
