An oxidative pathway hitherto unknown for tile degradation of a sesquiterpene alcohol, nerolidol (I) by Alcaligenes eutrophus is presented. Fermentation of nerolidol (I) by this organism in a mineral salts medium resulted in the formation of geranylacetone (II) and an optically active alcohol (S)-(+)-geranylacetol (III), as major metabolites. Nerolidol (I) induced cells readily transformed 1,2-epoxynerolidol (IV) and 1,2-dihydroxynerolidol (V) into geranylacetone (II). These cells also exhibited their ability to carry out stereospecific reduction of II into (S)-(+)-geranylacetol (III). Oxygen uptake studies clearly indicated that nerolidol induced cells oxidized compounds II, III, IV, V and ethyleneglycol. Based on these observations a new oxidative pathway for the degradation of I is suggested which envisages the epoxidation of the terminal double bond, opening of the epoxide and cleavage between C-2 and C-3 in a manner similar to the periodate oxidation of diol.

We report the effect of dual beam excitation on the photoluminescence (PL) from PbS quantum dots in polyvinyl alcohol by using two excitation lasers, namely Ar+ (514.5 nm) and He-Ne laser (670 nm). Both sources of excitation gave similar PL spectra around 1.67 eV (related to shallow traps) and 1.1 eV (related to deep traps). When both lasers were used at the same time, we found that the PL induced by each of the lasers was partly quenched by the illumination of the other laser. The proposed mechanism of this quenching effect involves traps that are populated by one specific laser excitation, being photo-ionized by the presence of the other laser. Temperature, laser intensity and modulation frequency dependent quenching efficiencies are presented in this paper. This reversible modulation has potential for optical switching and memory device applications. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Polypyrrole exhibits reversible changes in their direct current resistance on exposure to organic volatiles. However, one needs to employ an array of such sensors to discriminate organic volatiles present in a mixture. Hence, polypyrrole based gas sensor is designed for the detection and discrimination of different organic volatiles. Multi frequency impedance measurement technique is used to detect the organic vapors, such as acetone, ethanol and Isopropyl alcohol, in the gas phase, over a frequency range 10 Hz to 2 MHz. The sensor response is monitored by measuring the changes in its capacitance, resistance and the dissipation factor upon exposure to organic volatiles. It is observed that the capacitive property of the sensor is more sensitive to these volatiles than its resistive property. Each volatile responds to the sensor in terms of dissipation factor at specific frequency and found that the peak magnitude has a linear relationship with their concentrations.

Adsorption of dioxygen at clean Ni(110) and Ni(100) surfaces gives rise to two prominent features in the O(1s) spectra at 530 and 531 eV due to O2- and O- type species, respectively. Interaction of ammonia with a Ni(100)-O surface where theta(oxygen) < 0.1 ML favors the dissociation of NH3 giving NHn, (n = 1, 2) and N(a) species. This is accompanied by a decrease in the intensity of the 531 eV feature. On the other hand. a Ni(100)-O surface where the oxygen species are mainly of the O2- type is unreactive, Coadsorption studies of NH3-O-2 mixtures show that at Ni(110) surfaces the uptake of both oxygen and ammonia increase with the proportion of oxygen in the NH3-O-2 mixture. The surface concentrations of the O- species and the NHn species also increase with the increase in the O-2/NH3 ratio while the slope of the plot of sigma(N) versus sigma(O-) is around unity. The results demonstrate the high surface reactivity of the O- species and its role in the dissociation of ammonia. Based on these observations, the possibility of the formation of a surface complex between ammonia and oxygen (specifically O-) is suggested. Results from vibrational spectroscopic studies of the coadsorption of NH3-O-2 mixtures are consistent with those from core-level spectroscopic studies.

The adsorption of poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) onto alumina has been studied as a function of pH, both individually and in the presence of each other. The adsorption density of PAA is found to decrease with an increase of pH while that of PVA shows the opposite trend. In a binary system containing PAA and PVA, the presence of PVA does not affect the adsorption of PAA onto alumina, but the addition of PAA diminishes the adsorption of PVA in the pH range investigated. The adsorption isotherm of PAA at acidic pH exhibits high-affinity Langmuirian behavior. The isotherms for PVA appear rounded and are of the low-affinity type, Once again the adsorption isotherms of PAA remain unaltered in the presence of PVA whereas those of PVA are significantly affected resulting in a lowering of the adsorption density consequent to PAA addition. A variation in the sequence of addition of PAA and PVA does not affect the adsorption behavior of either of the polymers, The electrokinetic behavior of alumina with PAA is hardly influenced by the addition of PVA, On the other hand, the electrophoretic mobility of alumina in the presence of PVA is significantly altered in the presence of PAA and closely resembles the trend observed with PAA alone. Desorption studies reveal that over 80% of PVA could be desorbed in the pH range 3-9 whereas in the case of PAA, the percent desorption increases from 20 to about 70% as the pH is increased from about 3 to 8. Solution conductivity tests confirm interaction of aluminum species and PAA in the bulk solution. FTIR spectroscopic data provide evidence in support of hydrogen bonding and chemical interaction in the case of the PAA-alumina system and hydrogen bonding with respect to the PVA-alumina interaction. Chitosan (CS)-polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) cross-linked with sulfosuccinic acid (SSA) and modified with sulfonated polyethersulfone (SPES) mixed-matrix membranes are reported for their application in direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs). Polyethersulfone (PES) is sulfonated by chlorosulfonic acid and factors affecting the sulfonation reaction, such as time and temperature, are studied. The ion-exchange capacity, degree of sulfonation, sorption, and proton conductivity for the mixed-matrix membranes are investigated. The mixed-matrix membranes are also characterised for their mechanical and thermal properties. The methanol-crossover flux across the mixed-matrix membranes is studied by measuring the mass balance of methanol using the density meter. The methanol cross-over for these membranes is found to be about 33% lower in relation to Nafion-117 membrane. The DMFC employing CS-PVA-SPES mixed-matrix membrane with an optimum content of 25 wt % SPES delivers a peak power-density of 5.5 mW cm-2 at a load current-density of 25 mA cm-2 while operating at 70 degrees C. ZrB2 with different amounts of B4C additive (0-5 wt.%) has been hot pressed at 2000 degrees C and 25 MPa for 1 h. By addition of B4C, density as well as micro-hardness increased. For lower B4C content (0.5 and 1 wt.%), hot pressed ZrB2 shows considerable improvement in flexural strength after exposure in air at 1000 C for 5 h, while higher B4C content (3 and 5 wt.%) leads to marginal or no improvement. For any content of B4C, flexural strength after exposure in air at 1500 degrees C for 5 h is lower than as-hot pressed ZrB2. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Strength of hot pressed ZrB2-SiC composite after exposure to high temperatures (1000-1700 degrees C)
Resumo:
Residual strength (room temperature strength after exposure in air at high temperatures) of hot pressed ZrB2-SiC composites was evaluated as function of SiC contents (10-30 vol%) as well as exposure temperatures for 5 h (1000-1700 degrees C). Multilayer oxide scale structures were found after exposures. The composition and thickness of these multilayered oxide scale structure was dependent on exposure temperature and SiC contents in composites. After exposure to 1000 degrees C for 5 h, the residual strength of ZrB2-SiC composites improved by nearly 60% compared to the as-hot pressed composites with 20 and 30 vol% SiC. On the other hand, the residual strength of these composites remained unchanged after 1500 degrees C for 5 h. A drastic degradation in residual strength was observed in composites with 20 and 30 vol% SiC after exposure to 1700 degrees C for 5 h in ZrB2-SiC. An attempt was made to correlate the microstructural changes and oxide scales with residual strength with respect to variation in SiC content and temperature of expsoure. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. This study reports the in vitro compatibility of muscle cells (C2C12 mouse myoblast cell line) with the transparent poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) hydrogels and the results are explained on the basis of surface wettability, crystallinity, and nanoscale elastic stiffness property. Nanoindentation was carried out with a maximum load of 100 mu N for all the hydrogel compositions and the properties such as elastic stiffness, hardness and total work done during indentation were computed. The difference in cell viability as well as adhesion of cultured myoblast cells on the investigated hydrogel substrates were discussed in reference to the difference in the nanoscale elastic properties, crystallinity, and surface wettability. An important result has been that both elastic stiffness and surface wettability synergistically influence myoblast viability/adhesion on PVA hydrogels. (c) 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
