Theoretical optimization studies of the performance of a combustion driven premixed two-phase flow gasdynamic laser are presented. The steady inviscid nonreacting quasi-one-dimensional two-phase flow model including appropriate finite rate vibrational kinetic rates has been used in the analysis. The analysis shows that the effect of the particles on the optimum performance of the two-phase laser is very small. The results are presented in graphical form. Thionyl fluoride undergoes quantitative oxidation with chloramine-T and reduction with lithium aluminium hydride and sodium borohydride. At elevated temperatures, (>150°C) it reacts with metals such as copper, silver, zinc and lead forming the corresponding metal sulphides, fluorides and sulphur dioxide. With the respective metal oxides, the metal fluorides and sulphur dioxide are formed.

A cholesterol-esterifying enzyme which incorporates exogenous fatty acids into cholesterol esters in the presence of ATP and coenzyme A was demonstrated in 15-day-old rat brain. This enzyme was maximally active at pH 7.4 and distinct from the cholesterol-esterifying enzyme reported earlier (Eto and Suzuki, 1971), which has a pH optimum at 5.2 and does not require cofactors. Properties of the two enzymes have been compared. Both the enzymes showed negligible esterification with acetate and were maximally active with oleic acid. The pH 5.2 enzyme esterified desmosterol, lanosterol and cholesterol at about the same rate, while the pH 7.4 enzyme was only 50% as active ith lanosterol as it was with cholesterol and desmosterol. Phosphatidyl serine stimulated the pH 5.2 enzyme but not the pH 7.4 enzyme. Phosphatidyl choline and sodium taurocholate showed no effect on either of the enzymes. Both the enzymes were associated with particulate fractions, but the pH 7.4 enzyme was localized more in the microsomes. Purified myelin showed 2.6-fold and 1.5-fold higher specific activities of pH 5.2 and 7.4 enzymes respectively, when compared with homogenate. About 7-10% of total activity of both the enzymes was associated with purified myelin. Brain stem and spinal cord showed higher specific activity of pH 5.2 enzyme than cerebral cortex and cerebellum, while pH 7.4 enzyme specific activity was higher in cerebellum and brain stem than in cerebral cortex and spinal cord. Microsomal pH 7.4 activity showed progressive increase prior to the active period of myelination, reaching a maximum on the 15th day after birth and declined to 20% of the peak activity by 30 days. In contrast, pH 5.2 enzyme reached maximum activity about the 6th day after birth and remained at this level well into adulthood. In 15-day-old rat brain, pH 7.4 enzyme had five to six times higher specific activity than pH 5.2 enzyme, while in adults the activities were equal. The pH 7.4 enzyme showed a threefold higher specific activity than pH 5.2 enzyme in myelin from 15-day-old rats, but in adults the reverse was true. Instead of waiting for the acknowledgments from all the copies of a single data block sent, as in the optimum generalised stop-and-wait ARQ scheme, the transmitter in the proposed scheme starts sending an optimum number of copies of the next block in the queue, soon after receiving the positive acknowledgment from the receiver, thereby further improving the throughput efficiency.

3d and 4d core-level XPS spectra for CePd3, a mixed-valence system, have been measured. Each spectrum exhibits two sets of structures, each corresponding to one of the valence states of cerium. Thus the usefulness of XPS, which has so far not been used extensively to investigate the mixed-valence cerium systems, is pointed out.

For systems which can be decomposed into slow and fast subsystems, a near optimum linear state regulator consisting of two subsystem regulators can be developed. Depending upon the desired criteria, either a short term (fast controller) or a long term controller (slow controller) can be easily designed with minimum computational costs. Using this approach an example of a power system supplying a cyclic load is studied and the performance of the different controllers are compared.

The operation of thyristor-controlled static VAR compensators (SVCs) at various conduction angles can be used advantageously to meet the unablanced reactive power demands in a system. However, such operation introduces harmonic currents into the AC system. This paper presents an algorithm to evaluate an optimum combination of the phase-wise reactive power generations from SVC and balanced reactive power supply from the AC system, based on the defined performance indices, namely, the telephone influence factor (TIF), the total harmonic current factor (IT) and the distortion factor (D). Results of the studies conducted on a typical distribution system are presented and discussed.

Rat lung microsomes were shown to ω-hydroxylate acyclic monoterpene alcohols in the presence of NADPH and O2. NADH could neither support hydroxylation efficiently nor did it show synergistic effect. The hydroxylase activity was greater in microsomes prepared from β-naphthoflavone (BNF)-treated rats than from phenobarbital (PB)-treated or control microsomal preparations. Hydroxylation was specific to the C-8 position in geraniol and has a pH optimum of 7.8. The inhibition of the hydroxylase activity by SKF-525A, CO, N-ethylmaleimide, ellipticine, α-naphthoflavone, cyt. Image and p-CMB indicated the involvement of the cyt. P-450 system. However, NaN3 stimulated the hydroxylase activity to a significant level. Rat kidney microsomes were also capable of ω-hydroxylating geraniol although the activity was lower than that observed with lungs.

In Neurospora crassa, the activity of δ-aminolevulinate dehydratase, the second and rate-limiting enzyme of the heme-biosynthetic pathway, is low in normal cells compared to the activity detected in plants, animals and bacteria. The activity is almost undetectable when Neurospora crassa is grown under iron-deficient conditions. The enzyme activity increases strikingly on addition of iron to iron-deficient cultures. This increase can be blocked by the addition of protoporphyrin, the penultimate product of the heme-biosynthetic pathway, to the cultures. The question whether iron directly acts at the genetic level or acts merely by removing protoporphyrin, converting the latter into heme prosthetic groups of hemoproteins, has been investigated by studying the effect of inhibition of heme synthesis on the induction of δ-aminolevulinate dehydratase. It has been found that treatments with levulinic acid or cyanide which inhibit the formation of the porphyrin moiety, induce δ-aminolevulinate dehydratase, whereas treatments which inhibit at a step after protoporphyrin formation (iron-deficiency and cobalt treatment) repress the enzyme. The endogenous levels of protoporphyrin are strictly controlled: a decrease below the optimum level causing induction and an increase above the optimum level leading to repression of δ-aminolevulinate dehydratase. Levulinic acid and cyanide can induce the enzyme in iron-deficient cultures in the absence of added iron, indicating that the metal iron acts only by converting protoporphyrin to heme fixed in hemoproteins in Neurospora crassa. Therefore it is suggested that protoporphyrin is the physiological regulator of δ-aminolevulinate dehydratase in Neurospora crassa.

Thiophosphoryl fluoride is observed to undergo a facile reaction with sulphur trioxide forming phosphoryl fluoride, sulphur dioxide and elemental sulphur in quantitative yields. In the presence of excess of sulphur trioxide, however, the elemental sulphur released combines with it to form sulphur sesquioxide which subsequently decomposes and gives off sulphur dioxide. Similar observations are made with oleum.

The problem of designing an optimum Lanchester damper for a viscously damped single degree of freedom system subjected to inertial harmonic excitation is investigated. Two criteria are used for optimizing the performance of the damper: (i) minimum motion transmissibility; (ii) minimum force transmissibility. Explicit expressions are developed for determining the absorber parameters.
