Field-effect transistor characteristics of few-layer graphenes prepared by several methods have been investigated in comparison with those of single-layer graphene prepared by the in situ reduction of single-layer graphene oxide. Ambipolar features have been observed with single-layer graphene and n-type behaviour with all the few-layer graphenes, the best characteristics being found with the graphene possessing 2-3 layers prepared by arc-discharge of graphite in hydrogen. FETs based on boron and nitrogen doped graphene show n-type and p-type behaviour respectively. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Detailed high-temperature compression creep experiments on a pure 3 mol% yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia (3YTZ) and 3YTZ doped with 4.8 wt% TiO2 revealed that both materials exhibit a similar transition in stress exponents from n similar to 1 to n similar to 2 with a decrease in stress. The stress exponent of 1 and the inverse grain size dependence p of similar to 3 are consistent with the Coble diffusion creep at high stresses; the increase in stress exponent at low stresses is attributed to an interface-controlled diffusion creep process. Measurements revealed that grain-boundary sliding contributes to >similar to 50% of the total strain in both regions with n similar to 1 and n similar to 2, indicating the operation of the same fundamental deformation process in both regions. The creep data indicate that doping with TiO2 leads to an increase in the grain-boundary diffusion coefficients. The increase observed in the dihedral angle with doping is also consistent with the increase in grain boundary diffusion coefficient and the reported enhanced ductility in such materials.

Implications of nanostructuring and conductive carbon interface on lithium insertion/removal capacity and insertion kinetics innanoparticles of anatase polymorph of titania is discussed here.Sol-gel synthesized nanoparticles of titania (particle size similar to 6 nm) were hydrothermally coated ex situ with a thin layer of amorphous carbon (layer thickness: 2-5 nm) and calcined at a temperature much higher than the sol-gel synthesis temperature. The carbon-titania composite particles (resulting size similar to 10 nm) displayed immensely superior cyclability and rate capability (higher current rates similar to 4 g(-1)) compared to unmodified calcined anatase titania. The conductive carbon interface around titania nanocrystal enhances the electronic conductivity and inhibits crystallite growth during electrochemical insertion/removal thus preventing detrimental kinetic effects observed in case of unmodified anatase titania. The carbon coating of the nanoparticles also stabilized the titania crystallographic structure via reduction in the accessibility of lithium ions to the trapping sites. This resulted in a decrease in the irreversible capacity observed in the case of nanoparticles without any carbon coating.

We have prepared a new nanocomposite polymer electrolyte using nanoparticles of hydrotalcite, an anionic clay, as the filler. Hydrotalcite has the chemical composition [M-1-x(2+) M-x(3+) (OH)(2)](x+) [A(x/n)(n-)center dot mH(2)O] where M2+ is a divalent cation (e.g. Mg2+, Ni2+, Co2+,etc.) and M3+ is a trivalent cation (e.g. Al3+, Fe3+, Cr3+, etc.). A(n-) is an anion intercalated between the positively charged double hydroxide layers. The nanoparticles of [Mg0.67Al0.33 (OH)(2)] [(CO3)(0.17)center dot mH(2)O] were prepared by the co-precipitation method (average particle size as observed by TEM similar to 50 nm) and were doped into poly(ethylene glycol) PEG (m.w.2000) complexed with LiCIO4. Samples with different wt.% of hydrotalcite were prepared and characterized using XRD, DSC, TGA, impedance spectroscopy and NMR. Ionic conductivity for the pristine sample, similar to 7.3 x 10(-7) S cm(-1), was enhanced to a maximum of = 1.1 x 10(-5) S cm(-1) for 3.6 wt.% nanoparticle doped sample. We propose that the enhancement of ionic conductivity is caused by percolation effects of the high conductivity paths provided by interfaces between the nanoparticles and the polymer electrolyte. Sensing and photocatalysis of textile industry effluents such as dyes using mesoporous anatase titania nanowires are discussed here.Spectroscopic investigations show that the titania nanowires preferentially sense cationic (e.g. Methylene Blue, Rhodamine B) over anionic (e.g. Orange G, Remazol Brilliant Blue R) dyes. The adsorbed dye concentration on titania nanowires increased with increase in nanowire dimensions and dye solution pH. Electrochemical sensing directly corroborated spectroscopic findings. Electrochemical detection sensitivity for Methylene Blue increased by more than two times in magnitude with tripling of nanowire average length. Photodegradation of Methylene Blue using titania nanowires is also more efficient than the commercial P25-TiO2 nanopowders. Keeping illumination protocol and observation times constant, the Methylene Blue concentration in solution decreased by only 50% in case of P25-TiO2 nanoparticles compared to a 100% decrease for titania nanowires. Photodegradation was also found to be function of exposure times and dye solution pH.Excellent sensing ability and photocatalytic activity of the titania nanowires is attributed to increased effective reaction area of the controlled nanostructured morphology. EXAFS studies of Ni/Nb20, and Ni/Ti02 catalysts reduced at 773 K show evidence for the presence of a short Ni-Nb (Ti) and a long Ni-Nb (Ti) bond. The results provide evidence for considerable structural reorganization of the support in the vicinity of the Ni particles.

Ga1-xMnxSb crystals are grown with different Mn doping concentrations by the horizontal Bridgman method (x = 0 - 0.04). Optical absorption and photoluminescence studies are carried out in the temperature range 3-300 K. Optical absorption studies reveal that the inter-valence band transition from the spin-orbit split-off band to the light/heavy hole bands is dominant over the fundamental valence band to conduction band absorption. In higher doped crystals, the fundamental absorption peak is merged with the inter-valence band transition and could not be resolved. Photoluminescence measurements in heavily doped crystals reveal the band gap narrowing and band filling effects due to the Fermi level shifting into the valence band.

Are evaporation of graphite with Fe, Co and Ni yields two distinct types of metal nanoparticles, wrapped in graphitic layers and highly resistant to oxidation. Electron microscopy shows that the metal particles (10-40 nm) in the stub region are encapsulated in carbon onions, the particles in the soot being considerably smaller (2-15 nm). The metal particles in the soot are either ferromagnetic with lowered Curie temperatures or superparamagnetic.

The present investigation explores the adaptability of a microwave assisted route to obtain silver nanoparticles by the reduction of AgNO3 with vanillin, an environmentally benign material. Anionic surfactants such as AOT and SDS were used separately for encapsulating AgNPs and their role was compared. The UV-Visible absorption spectra present a broad SPR band consisting of two peaks suggesting the formation of silver nanoparticle with bimodal size distribution. The TEM image shows particles with spherical and hexagonal morphologies which confirms the results of UV-Vis studies. The anisotropy in the particle morphology can be attributed to the surface oxidation which in turn produces Ag@Ag2O core-shell nanostructures. Thus an intriguing feature of this system is that the obtained colloid is a mixture of AgNPs with and without Ag2O layers. Studies on the influence of pH on the stability of the synthesized nanoparticles revealed that the presence of excess Ag2O layers has a profound influence on it. Ag2O layers can be removed from AgNPs' surface by changing the solution pH to the acidic regime. The present study attests the enhanced ability of AOT in stabilizing the AgNPs in aqueous media. By employing EXAFS and magnetic measurements, it is shown that nanoparticles of nickel along with those of NiO are incorporated between the layers of a-zirconium phosphate (ZrP) by the thermal decomposition of nickel acetate intercalated in ZrP. The nickel nanoparticles are superparamagnetic. Hydrogen reduction produces small ferromagnetic nickel particles, most of which appear to be outside the interlayer space of ZrP.

Coarse BO2·xH2O (2 < x < 80) gels, free of anion contaminants react with A(OH)2 under refluxing conditions at 70100°C giving rise to crystallites of single phased, nanometer size powders of ABO3 perovskites (A = Ba, Sr, Ca, Mg, Pb; B = Zr, Ti, Sn). Solid solutions of perovskites could be prepared from compositionally modified gels or mixtures of A(OH)2. Donor doped perovskites could also be prepared from the same method so that the products after processing are often semiconducting. Faster interfacial diffusion of A2+ ions into the gel generates the crystalline regions whose composition is controllable by the A/B ratio as well as the A(OH)2 concentration.

Passing a H-2-CH4 mixture over oxide spinels containing two transition elements as in Mg0.8MyMz'Al2O4 (M, M' = Fe, Co or Ni, y + z = 0.2) at 1070 degrees C produces small alloy nanoparticles which enable the formation of carbon nanotubes. Surface area measurements are found to be useful for assessing the yield and quality of the nanotubes. Good-quality single-walled nanotubes (SWNTs) have been obtained in high yields with the FeCo alloy nanoparticles, as evidenced by transmission electron microscope images and surface area measurements. The diameter of the SWNTs is in the 0.8-5 nm range, and the multiwalled nanotubes, found occasionally, possess very few graphite layers. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Novel gold nanoparticles bearing cationic single-chain, double-chain, and cholesterol based amphiphilic units have been synthesized. These nanoparticles represent size-stable entities in which various cationic lipids have been immobilized through their thiol group onto the gold nanoparticle core. The resulting colloids have been characterized by UV-vis, (1)H NMR, FT-IR spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The average size of the resultant nanoparticles could be controlled by the relative bulkiness of the capping agent. Thus, the average diameters of the nanoparticles formed from the cationic single-chain, double-chain, and cholesterol based thiolate-coated materials were 5.9,2.9, and 2.04 nm, respectively. We also examined the interaction of these cationic gold nanoparticles with vesicular membranes generated from dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) lipid suspensions. Nanoparticle doped DPPC vesicular suspensions displayed a characteristic surface plasmon band in their UV-vis spectra. Inclusion of nanoparticles in vesicular suspensions led to increases in the aggregate diameters, as evidenced from dynamic light scattering. Differential scanning calorimetric examination indicated that incorporation of single-chain, double-chain, and cholesteryl-linked cationic nanoparticles exert variable effects on the DPPC melting transitions. While increased doping of single-chain nanoparticles in DPPC resulted in the phases that melt at higher temperatures, inclusion of an incremental amount of double-chain nanoparticles caused the lowering of the melting temperature of DPPC. On the other hand, the cationic cholesteryl nanoparticle interacted with DPPC in membranes in a manner somewhat analogous to that of cholesterol itself and caused broadening of the DPPC melting transition.

A novel wet-chemical precipitation method is optimized for the synthesis of ZnS nanocrystals doped with Cu+ and halogen. The nanoparticles were stabilized by capping with polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP). XRD studies show the phase singularity of ZnS particles having zinc-blende (cubic) structure. TEM as well as XRD line broadening indicate that the average crystallite size of undoped samples is similar to2 nm. The effects of change in stoichiometry and doping with Cu+ and halogen on the photoluminescence properties of ZnS nanophosphors have been investigated. Sulfur vacancy (Vs) related emission with peak maximum at 434 nm has been dominant in undoped ZnS nanoparticles. Unlike in the case of microcrystalline ZnS phosphor, incorporation of halogens in nanoparticles did not result V-Zn related self-activated emission. However, emission characteristics of nanophosphors have been changed with Cu+ activation due to energy transfer from vacancy centers to dopant centers. The use of halogen as co-activator helps to increase the solubility of Cu+ ions in ZnS lattice and also enhances the donor-acceptor type emission efficiency. With increase in Cu+ doping, Cu-Blue centers (CuZn-Cui+), which were dominant at low Cu+ concentrations, has been transformed into Cu-Green (Cu-Zn(-)) centers and the later is found to be situated near the surface regions of nanoparticles. From these studies we have shown that, by controlling the defect chemistry and suitable doping, photoluminescence emission tunability over a wide wavelength range, i.e., from 434 to 514 nm, can be achieved in ZnS nanophosphors. The role of homogeneity in ex situ grown conductive coatings and dimensionality in the lithium storage properties of TiO(2) is discussed here. TiO(2) nanotube and nanosheet comprising of mixed crystallographic phases of anatase and TiO(2) (B) have been synthesized by an optimized hydrothermal method. Surface modifications of TiO(2) nanotube are realized via coating the nanotube with Ag nanoparticles and amorphous carbon. The first discharge cycle capacity (at current rate = 10 mA g(-1)) for TiO(2) nanotube and nanosheet were 355 mAh g(-1) and 225 mAhg(-1), respectively. The conductive surface coating stabilized the titania crystallographic structure during lithium insertion-deinsertion processes via reduction in the accessibility of lithium ions to the trapping sites. The irreversible capacity is beneficially minimized from 110 mAh g(-1) for TiO(2) nanotubes to 96 mAh g(-1) and 57 mAhg(-1) respectively for Ag and carbon modified TiO(2) nanotubes. The homogeneously coated amorphous carbon over TiO(2) renders better lithium battery performance than randomly distributed Ag nanoparticles coated TiO(2) due to efficient hopping of electrons.
