The title molecule, C21H18O8, crystallizes in two crystal polymorphs, see also Nallasivam, Nethaji, Vembu & Jaswant [Acta Cryst. (2009), E65, o314-o315]. The molecules of both polymorphs differ by the conformation of the oxomethylacetate groups. The title molecules are rather planar compared to the molecules of the other polymorph. In the title molecule, one of the oxomethylacetate groups is disordered (occupancies of 0.6058/0.3942). The structures of both polymorphs are stabilized by C-H center dot center dot center dot O and C-H center dot center dot center dot pi interactions. Due to the planarity of the title molecules and similar intermolecular interactions, the title molecules are more densely packed than those of the other polymorph.

The title molecule, C21H18O8, crystallizes in two crystal polymorphs, see also Nallasivam, Nethaji, Vembu & Jaswant [Acta Cryst. (2009),E65, o312-o313]. The main difference between the two polymorphs is in the conformation of the oxomethylacetate groups with regard to the almost planar [total puckering amplitude 0.047 (2) angstrom] chromene ring. In the title compound, the best planes of the oxomethylacetate groups through the non-H atoms are almost perpendicular to the chromene ring [making dihedral angles of 89.61 (6) and 80.59 (5)degrees], while in the second polymorph the molecules are close to planar. Both crystal structures are stabilized by C-H center dot center dot center dot O.

The precipitation processes in dilute nitrogen alloys of titanium have been examined in detail by conventional transmission electron microscopy (CTEM) and high-resolution electron microscopy (HREM). The alloy Ti-2 at. pct N on quenching from its high-temperature beta phase field has been found to undergo early stages of decomposition. The supersaturated solid solution (alpha''-hcp) on decomposition gives rise to an intimately mixed, irresolvable product microstructure. The associated strong tweed contrast presents difficulties in understanding the characteristic features of the process. Therefore, HREM has been carried out with a view to getting a clear picture of the decomposition process. Studies on the quenched samples of the alloy suggest the formation of solute-rich zones of a few atom layers thick, randomly distributed throughout the matrix. On aging, these zones grow to a size beyond which the precipitate/matrix interfaces appear to become incoherent and the alpha' (tetragonal) product phase is seen distinctly. The structural details, the crystallography of the precipitation process, and the sequence of precipitation reaction in the system are illustrated.

The DL- and L-arginine complexes of oxalic acid are made up of zwitterionic positively charged amino acid molecules and semi-oxalate ions. The dissimilar molecules aggregate into separate alternating layers in the former. The basic unit in the arginine layer is a centrosymmetric dimer, while the semi-oxalate ions form hydrogen-bonded strings in their layer. In the L-arginine complex each semi-oxalate ion is surrounded by arginine molecules and the complex can be described as an inclusion compound. The oxalic acid complexes of basic amino acids exhibit a variety of ionization states and stoichiometry. They illustrate the effect of aggregation and chirality on ionization state and stoichiometry, and that of molecular properties on aggregation. The semi-oxalate/oxalate ions tend to be planar, but large departures from planarity are possible. The amino acid aggregation in the different oxalic acid complexes do not resemble one another significantly, but the aggregation of a particular amino acid in its oxalic acid complex tends to have similarities with its aggregation in other structures. Also, semi-oxalate ions aggregate into similar strings in four of the six oxalic acid complexes. Thus, the intrinsic aggregation propensities of individual molecules tend to be retained in the complexes.

The two molecules in the asymmetric unit of adenosine-5'-carboxylic acid, C10H11N5O5, exist as zwitterions with N1 protonated and the carboxyl groups ionized. Both molecules are in an anti conformation with glycosyl torsion angles of -161.4(3) and -155.5(3)degrees. The ribose moieties adopt a C3-endo-C2-exo twist conformation. The pseudo-rotation parameters are P = 0.01(1) and 6.58(1)degrees, and tau(m) = 36.2(2) and 34.6(2)degrees, for molecules A and B, respectively. The carboxyl groups of A and B are not in the standard g(+), g(-) or t conformations. Both Watson-Crick sites, N1 and N6, of the adenine bases are involved in a pair of hydrogen bonds with the dissociated carboxyl groups, forming a cyclic tetramer. The adenine base of molecule A stacks on the ribose O4' atom of a symmetry-related B molecule at a distance of 2.88 Angstrom; the adenine base of B stacks in an analogous way at a distance of 2.91 Angstrom.

A copper(II) complex of dipyridophenazine, viz., [Cu(dppz)(2)(H2O)](ClO4)(2) (I), has been prepared and structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography. The crystal structure of the complex shows a five-coordinate structure in which two N,N-donor dipyridophenazine (dppz) and one aqua ligand bind to the copper(II) center giving Cu-O and Cu-N bond distances in the range of 1.981(6) to 2.043(6) angstrom. The ESI-MS spectrum of 1 in MeCN shows a peak at m/z value of 313 (100%) indicating the dissociation of the aqua ligand in the solution phase. The complex is one-electron paramagnetic (mu(eff), 1.86 mu(B)). It displays a quasi-reversible Cu(II)/Cu(I) redox process at 0.096 V. The complex is an avid binder to CT DNA giving a binding constant value of 3.5 x 10(5) M-1. It shows significant hydrolytic cleavage of supercoiled pUC19 DNA in dark ill the absence of any external agents. The complex exhibits chemical nuclease activity oil treatment with 3-mercaptopropionic acid as a reducing agent forming hydroxyl radicals. Complex 1 is a model synthetic nuclease and hydrolase showing both modes of DNA cleavage under different reaction conditions. The DNA cleavage activity of 1 is significantly better than its phen analogue but similar to that of the bis-dpq complex.

Ferrocene-conjugated ternary copper(II) complexes [Cu(L)(B)](ClO4)(2), where L is FcCH(2)N(CH2Py)(2) (Fc = (eta(5)-C5H4)Fe-II(eta(5)-C5H5)) and B is a phenanthroline base, viz., 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy, 1), 1, 10-phenanthroline (phen, 2), dipyrido[3,2-d:2',3'-f]quinoxaline (dpq, 3), and dipyrido[3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine (dppz, 4), have been synthesized and characterized by various spectroscopic and analytical techniques. The bpy complex 1, as its hexafluorophosphate salt, has been structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography. The molecular structure shows the copper(II) center having an essentially square-pyramidal coordination geometry in which L with a pendant ferrocenyl (Fc) moiety and bpy show respective tridentate and bidentate modes of binding to the metal center. The complexes are redox active, showing a reversible cyclic voltammetric response of the Fc(+)-Fc couple near 0.5 V vs SCE and a quasi-reversible Cu(II)-Cu(I) couple near 0.0 V. Complexes 2-4 show binding affinity to calf thymus (CT) DNA, giving binding constant (K-b) values in the range of 4.2 x 10(4) to 2.5 x 10(5) M-1. Thermal denaturation and viscometric titration data suggest groove binding and/or a partial intercalative mode of binding of the complexes to CT DNA. The complexes show good binding propensity to the bovine serum albumin (BSA) protein, giving K-BSA values of similar to 10(4) M-1 for the bpy and phen complexes and similar to 10(5) M-1 for the dpq and dppz complexes. Complexes 2-4 exhibit efficient chemical nuclease activity in the presence of 3-mercapto-propionic acid (MPA) as a reducing agent or hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) as an oxidizing agent. Mechanistic studies reveal formation of hydroxyl radicals as the reactive species. The dpq and dppz complexes are active in cleaving supercoiled (SC) pUC19 DNA on photoexposure to visible light of different wavelengths including red light using an argon-krypton mixed gas ion laser. Mechanistic investigations using various inhibitors reveal the fort-nation of hydroxyl radicals in the DNA photocleavage reactions. The dppz complex 4, which shows efficient photoioduced BSA cleavage activity, is a potent multifunctional model nuclease and protease in the chemistry of photodynamic therapy (PDT) of cancer.

Ternary L-glutamine (L-gln) copper(II) complexes [Cu(L-gln)(B)(H2O)](X) (B = 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy), X = 0.5SO(4)(2-), 1; B = 1,10-phenanthroline (phen), X = ClO4-, 2) and [Cu(L-gln)(dpq)(ClO4)] (3) (dpq, dipyridoquinoxaline) are prepared and characterized by physicochemical methods. The DNA binding and cleavage activity of the complexes have been studied. Complexes 1-3 are structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography. The complexes show distorted square pyramidal (4+1) CuN3O2 coordination geometry in which the N,O-donor amino acid and the N, N-donor heterocyclic base bind at the basal plane with a H2O or perchlorate as the axial ligand. The crystal structures of the complexes exhibit chemically significant hydrogen bonding interactions besides showing coordination polymer formation. The complexes display a d-d electronic band in the range of 610-630 nm in aqueous-dimethylformamide (DMF) solution (9:1 v/v). The quasireversible cyclic voltammetric response observed near -0.1 V versus SCE in DMF-TBAP is assignable to the Cu(II)/Cu(I) couple. The binding affinity of the complexes to calf thymus (CT) DNA follows the order: 3 (dpq) > 2 (phen) >> 1 (bpy). Complexes 2 and 3 show DNA cleavage activity in dark in the presence of 3-mercaptopropionic acid (MPA) as a reducing agent via a mechanistic pathway forming hydroxyl radical as the reactive species. The dpq complex 3 shows efficient photoinduced DNA cleavage activity on irradiation with a monochromatic UV light of 365 nm in absence of any external reagent. The cleavage efficiency of the DNA minor groove binding complexes follows the order:3 > 2 >> 1. The dpq complex exhibits photocleavage of DNA on irradiation with visible light of 647.1 nm. Mechanistic data on the photo-induced DNA cleavage reactions reveal the involvement of singlet oxygen (O-1(2)) as the reactive species in a type-II pathway. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. MeNCS undergoes insertion into the copper(I)-aryloxide bond to form [N-methylimino(aryloxy)methanethiolato]-copper(I) complexes. This insertion occurs in the absence of ancillary ligands unlike the analogous insertion of PhNCS. The reaction with 4-methylphenoxide results in the formation of hexakis[[N-methylimino(4-methylphenoxy) methanethiolato]copper(I)] (1), which has been characterized by X-ray crystallography. Crystal data for 1: hexagonal , a = 10.088(2) Angstrom, b = 11.302(1) Angstrom, c = 17.990(2) Angstrom, alpha = 94.06(1)degrees, beta = 95.22(2)degrees, gamma = 103.94(1)degrees, Z = 2, V = 1974.4(7) Angstrom(3), R = 0.0361. In the presence of of PPh(3), the insertion reaction becomes reversible. This allows the exchange of the heterocumulene MeNCS or the aryloxy group in these molecules with another heterocumulene or a phenol, respectively, when catalytic amounts of PPh(3) are added. Oligomers with exchanged heterocumulmes and phenols could be characterized by independent synthesis.

The X-ray structure of recombinant bovine pancreatic phospholipase A(2) (PLA2), which specifically catalyzes the cleavage of the sn-2 acylester bond of phospholipids, has been refined at 1.5 Angstrom resolution. The crystal belongs to the space group P2(1)2(1)2(1) with unit-cell parameters a = 47.12, b = 64.59 and c = 38.14 Angstrom similar to the native enzyme reported previously by Dijkstra et nl. [J. Mel. Biol. (1981), 147, 97-123]. The refinement converged to an R value of 18.4% (R-free = 22.8%) for 16 374 reflections between 10.0 and 1.5 Angstrom resolution. The surface-loop residues (60-70) art: ordered in the present orthorhombic recombinant enzyme, but disordered in the trigonal recombinant enzyme. The active-site residues, His48, Asp99, and the catalytic water superimpose well with the trigonal form. Besides the catalytic water which is hydrogen bonded to His48, it is often seen that there is a second water attached to the same N atom of His48 and simultaneously hydrogen bonded to the O atom of Asp49. It is thought that the second water facilitates the tautomerism of His48 for enzyme catalysis, The catalytic water is also hydrogen bonded to the equatorial water coordinated to the calcium ion, In addition to the equatorial water, there is also an axial calcium water and the additional structural water. These five common water molecules are hydrogen bonded to the additional 16 water molecules in the present orthorhombic structure which may further enhance the structural integrity of the active site. Besides the protein and one calcium ion, a total of 134 water molecules were located in the present high-resolution refinement.
