The aryloxy(alkoxy)cyclotriphosphazenes N3P3(OR)6m(OC6H4Me-p)n(R = Me, n= 13; R = Et or CH2Ph, n= 3) rearrange on heating to give trioxocyclotriphosphazanes; the di- and mono-methoxy derivatives, N3P3(OMe)6n(OC6H4Me-p)n(n= 4 or 5), yield dioxophosphaz-1-enes and an oxophosphazadiene respectively. The 1H, 13C and 31P NMR data for the starting materials and the products are presented. No evidence has been found for partially rearranged products. The geometrical disposition of the aryloxy groups in the starting material is retained in the rearranged products. Some aspects of the mechanism of the thermal rearrangement are discussed.

Soil properties and their behavior, apart from stress history, are influenced markedly by physicochemical characteristics of the constituent clay and nonclay minerals and their relative proportions. Atterberg limits and Skempton’s colloidal activity, which are simple quantitative parameters, reflect the composite effects of the soil constituents and their interactions with pore fluid. Micromechanistic interpretations of these parameters have been provided in this paper. It has been shown that, in general, the liquid limit of fine-grained soils reflects the physicochemical potential and that each of the factors of Skempton’s colloidal activity are interdependent. It has been illustrated that property correlations with colloidal activity, as well as with Atterberg limits, result in involved interrelationships due to the interdependence of the parameters.

Mechanical alloying (MA) pioneered by Benjamin is a technique for the extension of solid solubility in systems where the equilibrium solid solubility is limited. This technique has, in recent years, emerged as a novel alternate route for rapid solidification processing (RSP) for the production of metastable crystalline, quasicrystalline, amorphous phases and nanocrystalline materials. The glass-forming composition range (GFR), in general, is found to be much wider in case of MA in comparison with RSP. The amorphous powders produced by MA can be compacted to bulk shapes and sizes and can be used as precursors to obtain high strength materials. This paper reports the work done on solid state amorphization by MA in Ti-Ni-Cu and Al-Ti systems where a wide GFR has been obtained. Al-Ti is a classic case where no glass formation has been observed by RSP, while a GFR of 25–90 at.% Ti has been obtained in this system, thus demonstrating the superiority of MA over RSP. The free energy calculations made to explain GFR are also presented.

Organic molecules such as glucose or lactose mediate the synthesis and stabilize alpha-nickel hydroxide in a simple precipitation reaction, while, in the absence of these additives, beta-nickel hydroxide is formed. The additives are not incorporated in the product phase.

Oxide pyrochlores of the formula A2BB? O7 (A = La, Nd; BB? = Pb, Sn, Bi) have been synthesized by a low-temperature ambient-pressure route employing KOH melts. All the compositions, including La2Bi2O7 and its strontium-substituted derivatives, La2-xSrxBi2O7-?, are deeply colored insulators, confirming that a metallic ground state is not achieved for Pb(IV) and Bi(IV/V) oxides with the pyrochlore structure.

We have prepared stable colloidal suspensions in a lyotropic liquid crystal exhibiting an isotropic-nematic-lamellar phase sequence. Small angle neutron scattering (SANS) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) studies show the existence of attractive interparticle interactions in the nematic phase, which lead to a gas-liquid transition of the particles. The resulting liquid phase is weakly anisotropic. Further, the nematic-lamellar transition of the liquid crystal is found to be accompanied by a liquid-solid transition of the particles.

We have carried out Brownian dynamics simulations of binary mixtures of charged colloidal suspensions of two different diameter particles with varying volume fractions phi and charged impurity concentrations n(i). For a given phi, the effective temperature is lowered in many steps by reducing n(i) to see how structure and dynamics evolve. The structural quantities studied are the partial and total pair distribution functions g(tau), the static structure factors, the time average g(<(tau)over bar>), and the Wendt-Abraham parameter. The dynamic quantity is the temporal evolution of the total meansquared displacement (MSD). All these parameters show that by lowering the effective temperature at phi = 0.2, liquid freezes into a body-centered-cubic crystal whereas at phi = 0.3, a glassy state is formed. The MSD at intermediate times shows significant subdiffusive behavior whose time span increases with a reduction in the effective temperature. The mean-squared displacements for the supercooled liquid with phi = 0.3 show staircase behavior indicating a strongly cooperative jump motion of the particles.

We report the Brownian dynamics simulation results on the translational and bond-angle-orientational correlations for charged colloidal binary suspensions as the interparticle interactions are increased to form a crystalline (for a volume fraction phi = 0.2) or a glassy (phi = 0.3) state. The translational order is quantified in terms of the two- and four-point density autocorrelation functions whose comparisons show that there is no growing correlation length near the glass transition. The nearest-neighbor orientational order is determined in terms of the quadratic rotational invariant Q(l) and the bond-orientational correlation functions g(l)(t). The l dependence of Q(l) indicates that icosahedral (l = 6) order predominates at the cost of the cubic order (l = 4) near the glass as well as the crystal transition. The density and orientational correlation functions for a supercooled liquid freezing towards a glass fit well to the streched-exponential form exp[-(t/tau)(beta)]. The average relaxation times extracted from the fitted stretched-exponential functions as a function of effective temperatures T* obey the Arrhenius law for liquids freezing to a crystal whereas these obey the Vogel-Tamman-Fulcher law exp[AT(0)*/(T* - T-0*)] for supercooled Liquids tending towards a glassy state. The value of the parameter A suggests that the colloidal suspensions are ''fragile'' glass formers like the organic and molecular liquids.

Nanometric aggregates of solids can be classified into two types, nanograined or nanophased materials and nanocomposites. In the present paper after a brief review including the relation between size and boundary fraction, the basic principles that can be utilized to synthesize these materials from liquid route has been discussed. We shall present examples to show that with proper choice of systems and conditions it is possible to obtain nanocomposites in systems showing clustering tendencies in liquid as well as the systems exhibiting ordering tendencies leading to compound formation

We are reporting a novel green approach to incorporate silver nanoparticles (NPs) selectively in the polyelectrolyte capsule shell for remote opening of polyelectrolyte capsules. This approach involves in situ reduction of silver nitrate to silver NPs using PEG as a reducing agent (polyol reduction method). These nanostructured capsules were prepared via layer by layer (LbL) assembly of poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) and dextran sulfate (DS) on silica template followed by the synthesis of silver NPs and subsequently the dissolution of the silica core. The size of silver nanoparticles synthesized was 60 +/- 20 nm which increased to 100 +/- 20 nm when the concentration of AgNO3 increased from 25 mM to 50 mM. The incorporated silver NPs induced rupture and deformation of the capsules under laser irradiation. This method has advantages over other conventional methods involving chemical agents that are associated with cytotoxicity in biological applications such as drug delivery and catalysis. Zn/acetic acid reaction of DDHQ esters 1 a-d gave the saturated acids 3 a-d and the hydrocarbons 7 a-d. The intermediacy of the aldehydes 10 and 11 in the formation of the products has been established. Oxidation of hydrocarbons 7a and 7b gave the corresponding tropones (5a and 5b).
