The NMR spectra of 2-fluoropyridine in two nematic liquid crystal solvents have been investigated. The direct dipole-dipole coupling constants thus derived have been used to obtain the structural information. The values of the interproton distance ratios arc found to be similar to those in pyridine. The results indicate negligible anisotropic contributions of lH-l9F indirect couplings.

Gene expression noise results in protein number distributions ranging from long-tailed to Gaussian. We show how long-tailed distributions arise from a stochastic model of the constituent chemical reactions and suggest that, in conjunction with cooperative switches, they lead to more sensitive selection of a subpopulation of cells with high protein number than is possible with Gaussian distributions. Single-cell-tracking experiments are presented to validate some of the assumptions of the stochastic simulations. We also examine the effect of DNA looping on the shape of protein distributions. We further show that when switches are incorporated in the regulation of a gene via a feedback loop, the distributions can become bimodal. This might explain the bimodal distribution of certain morphogens during early embryogenesis.

The analogy between N-H center dot center dot center dot O and C-H center dot center dot center dot O intermolecular interactions is studied with variable temperature (180-100 K) single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis.5,5-Diethylbarbituric acid (barbital) forms isostructural molecular complexes (co-crystals) with urea (1) and acetamide (2) that respectively contain these analogous interactions. The behaviour of these two interactions as a function of temperature is very similar. This indicates that the C-H center dot center dot center dot O bond in barbital acetamide plays a similar chemical and structural role as does the N-H center dot center dot center dot O bond in barbital urea. The close relationship between these interactions and their comparable nature is further adduced from the formation of a ternary solid solution (3) of barbital, urea and acetamide. The fact that the C-H center dot center dot center dot O interaction in barbital acetamide is weaker than the N-H center dot center dot center dot O interaction in barbital urea is shown by the fact that acetamide is under expressed and urea is over expressed with respect to the quantities of these substances present in solution prior to crystallization of these ternary crystals.

Sr2FeMoO6 double perovskits display low field MR at a relatively high temperature and unusual ferromagnetic properties. These compounds depicts metal to insulator transition increasing x above x(c) similar to 0.25. A comparative analysis of the near edge regions (XANES) suggests that iron is Fe3+ in the metallic range. Checking the end compounds, we found that the doped samples can be viewn as inhomogeneous distributions of the end compounds. This could help to distinguish between the two scenarios proposed to explain the metal to insulator transition. Moreover, the local atomic structure of Sr2FeMoxW1-xO6 as a function of composition (0 <= x <= 1) has been investigated by Extended X-ray absorption spectroscopy (EXAFS) a the Fe, Mo, Sr K-edges andW L-III-edge.

Let M, M' be smooth, real analytic hypersurfaces of finite type in C-n and f a holomorphic correspondence (not necessarily proper) that is defined on one side of M, extends continuously up to M and maps M to M-t. It is shown that f must extend across M as a locally proper holonnorphic correspondence. This is a version for correspondences of the Diederich-Pinchuk extension result for CR maps.

In this paper, we have developed a method to compute fractal dimension (FD) of discrete time signals, in the time domain, by modifying the box-counting method. The size of the box is dependent on the sampling frequency of the signal. The number of boxes required to completely cover the signal are obtained at multiple time resolutions. The time resolutions are made coarse by decimating the signal. The loglog plot of total number of boxes required to cover the curve versus size of the box used appears to be a straight line, whose slope is taken as an estimate of FD of the signal. The results are provided to demonstrate the performance of the proposed method using parametric fractal signals. The estimation accuracy of the method is compared with that of Katz, Sevcik, and Higuchi methods. In ddition, some properties of the FD are discussed.

The Indian Institute of Science at Bangalore is probably the oldest institute in India, established with a donation from the great industrial visionary Jamsetji Tata over eight decades ago. It has gradually become a key centre of scientific and engineering research and higher education. From its very inception the institute had an interdisciplinary approach to research and teaching.
