We perform computer simulations of a Cahn-Hilliard model of phase separation that has dynamical asymmetry between the two coexisting phases. The dynamical asymmetry is incorporated by considering a mobility function that is order parameter dependent. Simulations of this model reveal morphological features similar to those observed in viscoelastic phase separation. In the early stages, the minority phase domains form a percolating structure that shrinks with time, eventually leading to the formation of disconnected regions that are characterized by the presence of random interfaces as well as isolated droplets. The domains grow as L(t)similar to t(1/3) in the very late stages. Although dynamical scaling is violated in the area shrinking regime, it is restored at late times. However, the form of the scaling function is found to depend on the extent of dynamical asymmetry. [S1063-651X(99)12101-9].

Residually derived red soils occur in Bangalore District of Karnataka State, India. The porous and unsaturated nature of the red soils makes them susceptible to collapse on wetting under load. The present study analyses the collapse behaviour of an unsaturated bonded (undisturbed) red soil from Bangalore referenced to tests on samples in an unbonded (remoulded) state. A filter paper method was used to determine the matric suction of the bonded and unbonded specimens, and mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) was used to determine their soil structure. Analysis of the experimental results shows that bonding plays an important role in the collapse behaviour of the unsaturated residual soil. The results of the study also provide insight into the volume change behaviour of unsaturated bonded soils on wetting within and beyond the yield locus.

(La0.667Ca0.333Mn1-xMO3-delta)-O-x (M = Mg, Li or Re) exhibit insulating behaviour and nonlinear current-voltage (J-E) relationship with voltage-limiting characteristics at temperatures below the ferromagnetic transition (T-c). The high current region is set in at field strengths <60 V/cm. Nonlinearity exponent, alpha in the relation J = kE(alpha) increases inversely with temperature. In presence of an external magnetic field, the J-E curves show higher current density at lower field strengths. Microstructural studies indicate that there is no segregation of secondary phases in the grain boundary regions. There is remarkable changes in p(T) as well as J-E curves with the grain size. Annealing studies in lower p(O2) atmospheres indicate that there is significant out-diffusion of oxygen ions through the grain boundary layer (GBL) regions creating oxygen vacancies in the GBL regions. The concentration of Mn4+ ions is lowered at the GBL due to oxygen vacancies, reducing the probability of hopping and resulting in insulating behaviour. Therefore an insulating barrier is introduced between two conducting grains and the carrier motion between the grains is inhibited. Thus below T-c, where sufficient increase in resistivity is observed the conduction may be arising as a result of spin dependent tunneling across the barrier. External electric field lowers the barrier height and establishes carrier transport across the barrier. Above certain field strength, barrier height diminishes significantly and thereby allowing large number of carriers for conduction, giving rise to highly nonlinear conductivity. Ordered double perovskite oxides of the general formula A2BB′O6 have been known for several decades to have interesting electronic and magnetic properties. However, a recent report of a spectacular negative magnetoresistance effect in a specific member of this family, namely Sr2FeMoO6, has brought this class of compounds under intense scrutiny. It is now believed that the origin of the magnetism in this class of compounds is based on a novel kinetically-driven mechanism. This new mechanism is also likely to be responsible for the unusually high temperature ferromagnetism in several other systems, such as dilute magnetic semiconductors, as well as in various half-metallic ferromagnetic systems, such as Heussler alloys.

The processing maps are being developed for use in optimising hot workability and controlling the microstructure of the product. The present investigation deals with the examination to assess the prediction of the processing maps for a 15Cr-15Ni-2.2Mo-0.3Ti austenitic stainless steel using forging and rolling tests at different temperatures in the range of 600-1200 degreesC. The tensile properties of these deformed products were evaluated at room temperature. The influence of the processing conditions, i.e. strain rate and temperature on the tensile properties of the deformed product were analysed to identify the optimum processing parameters. The results have shown good agreement between the regimes exhibited by the map and the properties of the rolled or forged product. The optimum parameters for processing of this steel were identified as rolling or press forging at temperatures above 1050 degreesC to obtain optimum product properties. Rotational spectra of C(6)H(5)CCH center dot center dot center dot H(2)S, C(6)H(5)CCH center dot center dot center dot H(2)(34)S, C(6)H(5)CCH center dot center dot center dot HDS, C(6)H(5)CCH center dot center dot center dot D(2)S and C(6) H(5)CCD center dot center dot center dot H(2)S complexes have been observed using a pulsed nozzle Fourier transform microwave spectrometer. The observed spectrum is consistent with a structure in which hydrogen sulfide is located over the phenyl ring pi cloud and the distance between the centers of masses of the two monomers is 3.74 +/- 0.01 angstrom. In the complex, the H(2)S unit is shifted from the phenyl ring center towards the acetylene group. The vibrationally averaged structure has an effective Cs symmetry. Ab initio calculations were performed at MP2/aug-cc-pVDZ level of theory to locate the possible geometries of the complex. The calculations reveal the experimentally observed structure to be more stable than a coplanar arrangement of the monomers, which was observed for the C(6)H(5)CCH center dot center dot center dot H(2)O complex. Atoms in molecule theoretical analysis shows the presence of S-H center dot center dot center dot pi hydrogen bond. For the parent isotopologue, each transition frequency was found to split into two resulting from an interchange of the equivalent hydrogens of H(2)S unit in the complex. (C) 2011 Elsevier Inc. The impact of chemical treatment on the surface morphology and other physical properties of tin monosulphide (SnS) thin films have been investigated. The SnS films treated with selected organic solvents exhibited strong improvement in their crystalline-quality and considerable decrease in electrical resistivity. Particularly, the films treated with chloroform showed very low electrical resistivity of similar to 5 Omega cm and a low optical band gap of 1.81 eV as compared to untreated and treated SnS films with other chemicals. From these studies we realized that the chemical treatment of SnS films has strong impact on their surface morphology and also on other physical properties. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. Two Schiff base metal complexes Cu-SPETNNO3 (1) and Ni-SPETNNO3 (2) SPETN=2,2-propane,1,3-diylbis(nitrilomethyldyne)pyridyl,phenolate] ] with hydrogen bonding groups have been synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. In both of the compounds nitrates occupy a crystallographic general position. In 1 the lattice nitrates are on the 2(1) screw axis while in 2 they are at the crystallographic inversion center. C-HOnitrate synthons (formed by the nitrate anions and peripheral hydrogen bonding groups of the metal complexes) are non-covalent building blocks in molecular-assembly and packing of the cationic Schiff base metal complexes (M=Ni2+, Cu2+), resulting in 2-D hydrogen bonded networks. The CuCu non-bonding contact in 1 is 3.268 angstrom while the Ni-Ni bonding distance in 2 is 3.437 angstrom.

Low cycle fatigue behavior of an O+B2 alloy was evaluated at 650 degrees C in ambient atmosphere under fully reversed total axial strain controlled mode. Three different microstructures, namely equiaxed O plus aged B2 (fine O plates in B2 matrix), lenticular O laths plus aged B2 and a pancake composite microstructure comprising equiaxed alpha 2, lenticular O and aged B2, were selected to study the effect of microstructure on low cycle fatigue behavior in this class of alloys. Distinct well-defined trends were observed in the cyclic stress-strain response curves depending on the microstructure. The cyclic stress response was examined in terms of softening or hardening and correlated with microstructural features and dislocation behavior. Fatigue life was analyzed in terms of standard Coffin-Manson and Basquin plots and for all microstructures a prevailing elastic strain regime was identified, with a single slope for microstructures equiaxed and composite and a double slope for lenticular O laths. The problem of modelling the transient response of an elastic-perfectly-plastic cantilever beam, carrying an impulsively loaded tip mass, is,often referred to as the Parkes cantilever problem 25]; The permanent deformation of a cantilever struck transversely at its tip, Proc. R. Soc. A., 288, pp. 462). This paradigm for classical modelling of projectile impact on structures is re-visited and updated using the mesh-free method, smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH). The purpose of this study is to investigate further the behaviour of cantilever beams subjected to projectile impact at its tip, by considering especially physically real effects such as plastic shearing close to the projectile, shear deformation, and the variation of the shear strain along the length and across the thickness of the beam. Finally, going beyond macroscopic structural plasticity, a strategy to incorporate physical discontinuity (due to crack formation) in SPH discretization is discussed and explored in the context of tip-severance of the cantilever beam. Consequently, the proposed scheme illustrates the potency for a more refined treatment of penetration mechanics, paramount in the exploration of structural response under ballistic loading. The objective is to contribute to formulating a computational modelling framework within which transient dynamic plasticity and even penetration/failure phenomena for a range of materials, structures and impact conditions can be explored ab initio, this being essential for arriving at suitable tools for the design of armour systems. In this article we deal with a variation of a theorem of Mauceri concerning the L-P boundedness of operators M which are known to be bounded on L-2. We obtain sufficient conditions on the kernel of the operator M so that it satisfies weighted L-P estimates. As an application we prove L-P boundedness of Hermite pseudo-multipliers. Pyrophosphate cathodes have been recently reported as a competent family of insertion compounds for sodium-ion batteries. In the current study, we have investigated the binary Na2 - x(Fe1 - yMny)P2O7 (0 <= y <= 1) pyrophosphate family, synthesized by the classical solid-state method. They form a continuous solid solution maintaining triclinic P-1 (#2) symmetry. The local structural coordination differs mainly by different degrees of Na site occupancy and preferential occupation of the Fe2 site by Mn. The structural and magnetic properties of these mixed-metal pyrophosphate phases have been studied. In each case, complete Fe3+/Fe2+ redox activity has been obtained centered at 3 V vs. Na. The Fe3+/Fe2+ redox process involves multiple steps between 2.5 and 3 V owing to Na-cation ordering during electrochemical cycling, which merge to form a broad single Fe3+/Fe2+ redox peak upon progressive Mn-doping. Spatial modulation (SM) is attractive for multiantenna wireless communications. SM uses multiple transmit antenna elements but only one transmit radio frequency (RF) chain. In SM, in addition to the information bits conveyed through conventional modulation symbols (e.g., QAM), the index of the active transmit antenna also conveys information bits. In this paper, we establish that SM has significant signal-to-noise (SNR) advantage over conventional modulation in large-scale multiuser (multiple-input multiple-output) MIMO systems. Our new contribution in this paper addresses the key issue of large-dimension signal processing at the base station (BS) receiver (e.g., signal detection) in large-scale multiuser SM-MIMO systems, where each user is equipped with multiple transmit antennas (e.g., 2 or 4 antennas) but only one transmit RF chain, and the BS is equipped with tens to hundreds of (e.g., 128) receive antennas. Specifically, we propose two novel algorithms for detection of large-scale SM-MIMO signals at the BS; one is based on message passing and the other is based on local search. The proposed algorithms achieve very good performance and scale well. For the same spectral efficiency, multiuser SM-MIMO outperforms conventional multiuser MIMO (recently being referred to as massive MIMO) by several dBs. The SNR advantage of SM-MIMO over massive MIMO can be attributed to: (i) because of the spatial index bits, SM-MIMO can use a lower-order QAM alphabet compared to that in massive MIMO to achieve the same spectral efficiency, and (ii) for the same spectral efficiency and QAM size, massive MIMO will need more spatial streams per user which leads to increased spatial interference.
