The rare earth iron garnets Ln3Fe5O12 and Y3AlxFe5-xO12, where x=1.0-5.0, and Y1.5Gd1.5Al0.2Fe4.8O12 have been prepared by the combustion of redox mixtures containing corresponding metal nitrates and oxalyl dihydrazide, i.e. C2H6N4O2 at 350-degrees-C. The solid combustion products are amorphous, submicrometre-sized powders which, on heating at 750-degrees-C for 3 h, yield crystalline single-phase garnets. The particle size of the garnets is below 1 mum and the surface area ranges from 16 to 90 m2 g-1. Yttrium iron garnet could be sintered to a density of more than 95% at 1200-degrees-C for 3 h, giving an average grain size of 3-5 mum.

Variable-temperature X-ray diffraction studies of C70 suggest the occurrence of two phase transitions around 350 and 280 K where the high-temperature phase is fcc and the low-temperature phase is monoclinic, best described as a distorted hcp structure with a doubled unit cell; two like-phases (possibly hcp) seem to coexist in the 280-350 K range. Application of pressure gives rise to three distinct transitions associated with characteristic pressure coefficients, the extrapolated values of the transition temperatures at ambient pressure being around 340, 325 and 270 K. Pressure delineates closely related phases Of C70 just as in the case Of C60 which exhibits two orientational phase transitions at high pressures.

Differential scanning calorimetry studies have been performed on GexSb5Se95-x (12.5≤x≤35) and GexSb10Se90-x (10≤x≤32.5) glasses. The observed dependence of the glass transition temperature on the mean coordination number up to =2.60 and the maxima in the glass transition temperature and the activation energy of crystallisation at =2.65 have been interpreted in terms of the mechanical and chemical thresholds occuring near these compositions.

Mesoporous MnO2 is prepared from KMnO4 by using a tri-block copolymer, namely, poly(ethylene glycol)-block-poly(propylene glycol)-block-poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG-PPG-PEG) as a reducing as well as a structure-directing agent. The as synthesized MnO2 samples are poorly crystalline with mesoporosity having pore diameter between 8 and 40 nm. BET surface area as high as 273 m(2) g(-1) is obtained. By heating, the poorly crystalline MnO2 turns into a well crystalline form at 400 degrees C with nanorod morphology. However, the surface area decreases for the heated samples. Samples of MnO2 prepared by varying the ratio of KMnO4 and the copolymer, and also the heated samples are subjected to electrochemical characterization for supercapacitor studies. High specific capacitance values on mass basis are obtained for the as prepared mesoporous MnO2 samples. (C) 2011 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

The facile method of solution combustion was used to synthesize gamma(L)-Bi(2)MoO(6). The material was crystallized in a purely crystalline orthorhombic phase with sizes varying from 300 to 500 nm. Because the band gap was 2.51 eV, the degradation of wide variety of cationic and anionic dyes was investigated under solar radiation. Despite the low surface area (< 1 m(2)/g) of the synthesized material, gamma(L)-Bi(2)MoO(6) showed high photocatalytic activity under solar radiation due to its electronic and morphological properties. The surface wave induced magnetic reconnection (SWIMR) model based on Alfven Resonance theory will be discussed briefly both for collisional and collisionless plasmas. It is shown that the spatial scales and time delays associated with Flux Transfer Events and Pulsed Ionospheric Flows, as observed by satellites and SuperDARN radars and the magnetic bubbles, observed at the high latitude boundary of the magnetopause, can be explained by the SWIMR model.

A new composition path, Xi-Xj=constant, is suggested for the semi-empirical calculation of the thermodynamic properties of ternary ‘substitutional’ solutions from binary data, when the binary systems show deviations from the regular solution model. A comparison is made between the results obtained for integral and partial properties using this composition path and those calculated employing other composition paths suggested in literature. It appears that the best estimate of the ternary properties is obtained when binary data at compositions closest to the ternary composition are used.

The standard Gibbs' free energies of formation of compounds of type Cu2L%05 (Ln = Tb,Dy,Er,Yb) were measured using the solid state cell in the temperature range of 970 to 1323 K For formation of Cu2L?O5 compounds from their binary component oxides according to the reaction 2 CUO (s) + L%03 (s) -, Cu,,L%05 (s),the Gibbs' free energy changes can be represented by the following equations:AGO = 13 080 - 13.70 'I" (+80) J mol-' (Ln = Tb)AGq = 11 480 - 13.51 T (260) J mol-I (Ln = Dy)AGO = 10 750 - 13.99 T (260) J mol-I (Ln = Er)AGO = 9 920 - 13.90 T (260) J mol-' (Ln = Yb) Since formation of the compounds is endothermic, the compounds become thermodynamically unstable with respect to their component oxides below 955 K for Cu2Tb205, 850 K for Cu2Dy205, 768 K for Cu2Er205 and 714 K for Cu2Yb2OS When the oxygen partial pressure over Cu2L%05 is lowered, they decompose according to the scheme, 2 CU,L%O, (s) -r 2 L%03 (s) +2 cu20 (s) + 02(g)The equilibrium chemical potentials of oxygen corresponding to the dissociation reactions are computed from the emf data and auxiliary information on Cu20 and CuO. The computed decomposition temperatures at an oxygen partial pressure of 5.0 x ld Pa are compared with those obtained directly from combined thermogravimetric (TGA) and differential thermal analyses (DTA).The free energy, enthalpy and entropy of formation of Cu2Ln205 compounds show systematic variation with the ionic radius of the trivalent lanthanide ion. The trends obtained in this study are compared with information available in the literature. The staZbility of Cu2Ln205 compounds increases with the decrease in ionic radii of the ~ n ion~. +

Deviation from local equilibrium between Fe–Ni alloy and (Fe,Ni)TiO3 solid solution in the reaction–diffusion zone of the Fe–NiTiO3 couple at 1273 K is evaluated by comparing the measured compositions in the zone with experimentally determined equilibrium tie-lines. The deviation is quantified by computing the Gibbs energy change for the reaction, Fe + NiTiO3 → FeTiO3 + Ni, from measured compositions in the zone and activity data available in the literature. Except near the extremities of the zone, the computed Gibbs energy change is constant, 8.2 kJ mol−1 higher than the standard Gibbs energy change for the reaction.

We present a systematic study to explore the effect of important process variables on the composition and structure of niobium nitride thin films synthesized by Reactive Pulsed Laser Deposition (RPLD) technique through ablation of high purity niobium target in the presence of low pressure nitrogen gas. Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry has been used in a unique way to study and fix gas pressure, substrate temperature and laser fluence, in order to obtain optimized conditions for one variable in single experimental run. The x-ray diffraction and electron microscopic characterization have been complemented by proton elastic backscattering spectroscopy and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to understand the incorporation of oxygen and associated non-stoichiometry in the metal to nitrogen ratio. The present study demonstrates that RPLD can be used for obtaining thin film architectures using non-equilibrium processing. Finally the optimized NbN thin films were characterized for their hardness using nano-indentation technique and found to be similar to 30 GPa at the deposition pressure of 8 Pa. We employed different experimental model systems to define the role of GATA4, beta-catenin, and steroidogenic factor (SF-1) transcriptional factors in the regulation of monkey luteal inhibin secretion. Reverse transcription polymerase chain reactions and western blotting analyses show high expression of inhibin-alpha, GATA4, and beta-catenin in corpus luteum (CL) of the mid-luteal phase. Gonadotropin-releasing hormone receptor antagonist-induced luteolysis model suggested the significance of luteinizing hormone (LH) in regulating these transcriptional factors. Inducible cyclic AMP early repressor mRNA expression was detected in the CL and no change was observed in different stages of CL. Following amino acid sequence analysis, interaction between SF-1 and beta-catenin in mid-stage CL was verified by reciprocal co-immunoprecipitation experiments coupled to immunoblot analysis. Electrophoretic mobility shift analysis support the role of SF-1 in regulating luteal inhibin-alpha expression. Our results suggest a possible multiple crosstalk of Wnt, cAMP, and SF-1 in the regulation of luteal inhibin secretion.

The rainbow connection number of a connected graph is the minimum number of colors needed to color its edges, so that every pair of its vertices is connected by at least one path in which no two edges are colored the same. In this article we show that for every connected graph on n vertices with minimum degree delta, the rainbow connection number is upper bounded by 3n/(delta + 1) + 3. This solves an open problem from Schiermeyer (Combinatorial Algorithms, Springer, Berlin/Hiedelberg, 2009, pp. 432437), improving the previously best known bound of 20n/delta (J Graph Theory 63 (2010), 185191). This bound is tight up to additive factors by a construction mentioned in Caro et al. (Electr J Combin 15(R57) (2008), 1). As an intermediate step we obtain an upper bound of 3n/(delta + 1) - 2 on the size of a connected two-step dominating set in a connected graph of order n and minimum degree d. This bound is tight up to an additive constant of 2. This result may be of independent interest. We also show that for every connected graph G with minimum degree at least 2, the rainbow connection number, rc(G), is upper bounded by Gc(G) + 2, where Gc(G) is the connected domination number of G. Bounds of the form diameter(G)?rc(G)?diameter(G) + c, 1?c?4, for many special graph classes follow as easy corollaries from this result. This includes interval graphs, asteroidal triple-free graphs, circular arc graphs, threshold graphs, and chain graphs all with minimum degree delta at least 2 and connected. We also show that every bridge-less chordal graph G has rc(G)?3.radius(G). In most of these cases, we also demonstrate the tightness of the bounds.

A recent modelling study has shown that precipitation and runoff over land would increase when the reflectivity of marine clouds is increased to counter global warming. This implies that large scale albedo enhancement over land could lead to a decrease in runoff over land. In this study, we perform simulations using NCAR CAM3.1 that have implications for Solar Radiation Management geoengineering schemes that increase the albedo over land. We find that an increase in reflectivity over land that mitigates the global mean warming from a doubling of CO2 leads to a large residual warming in the southern hemisphere and cooling in the northern hemisphere since most of the land is located in northern hemisphere. Precipitation and runoff over land decrease by 13.4 and 22.3%, respectively, because of a large residual sinking motion over land triggered by albedo enhancement over land. Soil water content also declines when albedo over land is enhanced. The simulated magnitude of hydrological changes over land are much larger when compared to changes over oceans in the recent marine cloud albedo enhancement study since the radiative forcing over land needed (-8.2 W m(-2)) to counter global mean radiative forcing from a doubling of CO2 (3.3 W m(-2)) is approximately twice the forcing needed over the oceans (-4.2 W m(-2)). Our results imply that albedo enhancement over oceans produce climates closer to the unperturbed climate state than do albedo changes on land when the consequences on land hydrology are considered. Our study also has important implications for any intentional or unintentional large scale changes in land surface albedo such as deforestation/afforestation/reforestation, air pollution, and desert and urban albedo modification.
