Copper exhibits high thermal conductivity properties and hence it is extensively used in cryogenic applications like cold fingers, heat exchangers, etc. During the realization of such components, copper undergoes various machining operations from the raw material stage to the final component. During these machining processes, stresses are induced within the metal resulting in internal stresses, strains and dislocations. These effects build up resistance paths for the heat carriers which transfer heat from one location to the other. This in turn, results in reduction of thermal conductivity of the conducting metal and as a result the developed component will not perform as per expectations. In the process of cryogenic treatment, the metal samples are exposed to cryogenic temperature for extended duration of time for 24 hours and later tempered. During this process, the internal stresses and strains are reduced with refinement of the atomic structure. These effects are expected to favourably improve thermal conductivity properties of the metal. In this experimental work, OFHC copper samples were cryotreated for 24 hours at 98 K and part of them were tempered at 423K for one hour. Significant enhancement of thermal conductivity values were observed after cryotreating and tempering the copper samples.

The diffusion equation-based modeling of near infrared light propagation in tissue is achieved by using finite-element mesh for imaging real-tissue types, such as breast and brain. The finite-element mesh size (number of nodes) dictates the parameter space in the optical tomographic imaging. Most commonly used finite-element meshing algorithms do not provide the flexibility of distinct nodal spacing in different regions of imaging domain to take the sensitivity of the problem into consideration. This study aims to present a computationally efficient mesh simplification method that can be used as a preprocessing step to iterative image reconstruction, where the finite-element mesh is simplified by using an edge collapsing algorithm to reduce the parameter space at regions where the sensitivity of the problem is relatively low. It is shown, using simulations and experimental phantom data for simple meshes/domains, that a significant reduction in parameter space could be achieved without compromising on the reconstructed image quality. The maximum errors observed by using the simplified meshes were less than 0.27% in the forward problem and 5% for inverse problem.

Monitoring and visualizing specimens at a large penetration depth is a challenge. At depths of hundreds of microns, several physical effects (such as, scattering, PSF distortion and noise) deteriorate the image quality and prohibit a detailed study of key biological phenomena. In this study, we use a Bessel-like beam in-conjugation with an orthogonal detection system to achieve depth imaging. A Bessel-like penetrating diffractionless beam is generated by engineering the back-aperture of the excitation objective. The proposed excitation scheme allows continuous scanning by simply translating the detection PSF. This type of imaging system is beneficial for obtaining depth information from any desired specimen layer, including nano-particle tracking in thick tissue. As demonstrated by imaging the fluorescent polymer-tagged-CaCO3 particles and yeast cells in a tissue-like gel-matrix, the system offers a penetration depth that extends up to 650 mu m. This achievement will advance the field of fluorescence imaging and deep nano-particle tracking.

Nonextremal solution with warped resolved-deformed conifold background is important to study the infrared limit of large N thermal QCD. Earlier works in this direction have not taken into account all the backreactions on the geometry, namely from the branes, fluxes, and black-hole carefully. In the present work we make some progress in this direction by solving explicitly the supergravity equations of motions in the presence of the backreaction from the black hole. The backreactions from the branes and the fluxes on the other hand and to the order that we study, are comparatively suppressed. Our analysis reveal, among other things, how the resolution parameter would depend on the horizon radius and how the renormalization group flows of the coupling constants should be understood in these scenarios, including their effects on the background three-form fluxes. We also study the effect of switching on a chemical potential in the background and, in a particularly simplified scenario, compute the actual value of the chemical potential for our case.

Single and two-stage Pulse Tube Cryocoolers (PTC) have been designed, fabricated and experimentally studied. The single stage PTC reaches a no-load temperature of similar to 29 K at its cold end, the two-stage PTC reaches similar to 2.9 K in its second stage cold end and similar to 60 K in its first stage cold end. The two-stage Pulse Tube Cryocooler provides a cooling power of similar to 250 mW at 4.2 K. The single stage system uses stainless steel meshes along with Pb granules as its regenerator materials, while the two-stage PTC uses combinations of Pb along with Er3Ni/HoCu2 as the second stage regenerator materials. Normally, the above systems are insulated by thermal radiation shields and mounted inside a vacuum chamber which is maintained at high vacuum. To evaluate the performance of these systems in the possible conditions of loss of vacuum with and without radiation shields, experimental studies have been performed. The heat-in-leak under such severe conditions has been estimated from the heat load characteristics of the respective stages. The experimental results are analyzed to obtain surface emissivities and effective thermal conductivities as a function of interspace pressure.

Tert-butyl 2,2-bis(2,4-dinitrophenyl)ethanoate was prepared from the ethanolic solution of 1-chloro-2,4-dinitrobenzene, tert-butyl 3-oxobutanoate and triethylamine. Acetyl group in tert-butyl 3-oxobutanoate has cleaved off during the formation of the title molecule. UV-VIS, IR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, Proton-Proton COSY data and single crystal XRD results support the proposed structure. Flammability test, impact sensitivity test and TG/DTA studies at different heating rates on the synthesized molecule imply that it is an insensitive high energy density material.

This contribution reports and analyses the high thermal transport property of hot-pressed TiB2-10 wt.% TiSi2 ceramics. Depending on the test temperature, the thermal conductivity values of the TiB2 composite (which range from 89 to 122W m(-1) K-1) are determined to be 18-25% higher than that of monolithic TiB2. The thermal transport properties are analyzed in terms of electronic and phonon contributions. The electronic contribution is the major component of the thermal conductivity of TiB2 and comparable contributions from both electronic and phonon components are observed for the TiB2-TiSi2 composite. Iron(II) complexes Fe(L)(2)](2+) as perchlorate (1-3) and chloride (1a-3a) salts, where L is 4'-phenyl-2,2':6',2 `'-terpyridine (phtpy in 1, 1a), 4'-(9-anthracenyl)-2,2':6',2 `'-terpyridine (antpy in 2, 2a) and 4'-(1-pyrenyl)-2,2':6',2 `'-terpyridine (pytpy in 3, 3a), were prepared and their photocytotoxicity studied. The diamagnetic complexes 1-3 having an FeN6 core showed an Fe(III)-Fe(II) redox couple near 1.0 V vs. saturated calomel electrode in MeCN-0.1 M tetrabutylammonium perchlorate. Complexes 2 and 3, in addition, displayed a quasi-reversible ligand-based redox process near 0.0 V. The redox and spectral properties are rationalized from the theoretical studies. The complexes bind to DNA in a partial intercalative mode. The pytpy complex efficiently photo-cleaves DNA in green light via superoxide and hydroxyl radical formation. The antpy and pytpy complexes exhibited a remarkable photocytotoxic effect in HeLa cancer cells (IC50, similar to 9 mu M) in visible light (400-700 nm), while remaining essentially nontoxic in dark (IC50, similar to 90 mu M). Formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) inside the HeLa cells was evidenced from the fluorescence enhancement of dichlorofluorescein upon treatment with the pytpy complex followed by photo-exposure. The antpy and pytpy complexes were used for cellular imaging. Confocal imaging and dual staining study using propidium iodide (PI) showed nuclear localization of the complexes. (c) 2012 Elsevier Inc. The vaporization characteristics of pendant droplets of various chemical compositions (like conventional fuels, alternative fuels and nanosuspensions) subjected to convective heating in a laminar air jet have been analyzed. Different heating conditions were achieved by controlling the air temperature and velocity fields around the droplet. A hybrid timescale has been proposed which incorporates the effects of latent heat of vaporization, saturation vapor pressure and thermal diffusivity. This timescale in essence encapsulates the different parameters that influence the droplet vaporization rate. The analysis further permits the evaluation of the effect of various parameters such as surrounding temperature, Reynolds number, far-field vapor presence, impurity content and agglomeration dynamics (nanosuspensions) in the droplet. Flow visualization has been carried out to understand the role of internal recirculation on the vaporization rate. The visualization indicates the presence of a single vortex cell within the droplet on account of the rotation and oscillation of the droplet due to aerodynamic load. External heating induced agglomeration in nanofluids leads to morphological changes during the vaporization process. These morphological changes and alteration in vaporization behavior have been assessed using high speed imaging of the diameter regression and Scanning Electron Microscopy images of the resultant precipitate. A cationic superabsorbent polymer (SAP) was synthesized by carrying out the polymerization of 2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl] trimethyl ammonium chloride) with N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide as the cross-linking agent. The SAP was subjected to degradation in dry and the equilibrium swollen state by thermo gravimetric analysis and exposure to ultraviolet radiation, respectively. The photodegradation was monitored by measuring changes in the swelling capacity and the dry weight of the SAP. The thermal degradation of the SAP occurred in three stages after the initial removal of moisture and the activation energies of the decomposition were determined.

This paper presents simulation and experimental studies on the characterization of ultra wideband antennas for imaging applications. Various configurations of antennas were simulated for their time and frequency domain characteristics with special emphasis on flat responses for group delay and gain versus frequency. Parametric studies reported here showed that locating the capacitive feed strip near the vertex of the triangle gave better response in these respects. An antenna with operating frequency from 2.9GHz to 4.1GHz was fabricated and measured.

Reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization at 70 A degrees C in N,N-dimethylformamide was used to prepare poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-N,N-dimethylacrylamide) copolymers in various compositions to afford well-defined polymers with pre-determined molecular weight, narrow molecular weight distribution, and precise chain end structure. The copolymer compositions were determined by H-1 NMR spectroscopy. The reactivity ratios of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) and N,N-dimethylacrylamide (DMA) were calculated as r (NIPAM) = 0.838 and r (DMA) = 1.105, respectively, by the extended Kelen-Tudos method at high conversions. The lower critical solution temperature of PNIPAM can be altered by changing the DMA content in the copolymer chain. Differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis at different heating rates were carried out on these copolymers to understand the nature of thermal degradation and to determine its kinetics. Different kinetic models were applied to estimate various parameters like the activation energy, the order, and the frequency factor. These studies are important to understand the solid state polymer degradation of N-alkyl substituted polymers, which show great potential in the preparation of miscible polymer blends due to their ability to interact through hydrogen bonding.

In this paper, we address a physics-based closed-form analytical model of flexural phonon-dependent diffusive thermal conductivity (kappa) of suspended rectangular single layer graphene sheet. A quadratic dependence of the out-of-plane phonon frequency, generally called flexural phonons, on the phonon wave vector has been taken into account to analyze the behavior of kappa at lower temperatures. Such a dependence has further been used for the determination of second-order three-phonon Umklapp and isotopic scatterings. We find that these behaviors in our model are best explained through the upper limit of Debye cut-off frequency in the second-order three-phonon Umklapp scattering of the long phonon waves that actually remove the thermal conductivity singularity by contributing a constant scattering rate at low frequencies and note that the out-of-plane Gruneisen parameter for these modes need not be too high. Using this, we clearly demonstrate that. follows a T-1.5 and T-2 law at lower and higher temperatures in the absence of isotopes, respectively. However in their presence, the behavior of kappa sharply deviates from the T-2 law at higher temperatures. The present geometry-dependent model of kappa is found to possess an excellent match with various experimental data over a wide range of temperatures which can be put forward for efficient electro-thermal analyses of encased/supported graphene.

We report the synthesis of trigonal and tetragonal phase GeO2 films/microrods from a Ge wafer/powder by thermal oxidation. Both trigonal and tetragonal GeO2 exhibit excitation-dependent luminescence. Trigonal GeO2 exhibits strong green luminescence while tetragonal GeO2 exhibits strong blue luminescence when excited with ultra-violet light. Yellow-red luminescence is observed when both the phases are excited with green light. The emission wavelength varies almost linearly with the excitation wavelength both for trigonal and tetragonal GeO2. The variation is significant in the case of tetragonal GeO2, indicating a potential wavelength converter material.
