Late-transition-metal-doped Pt clusters are prevalent in CO oxidation catalysis, as they exhibit better catalytic activity than pure Pt, while reducing the effective cost and poisoning However, completely eliminating the critical problem of Pt poisoning still poses a big challenge. Here, we report for the first time that, among the bimetallic clusters ((Pt3M where M = Co, Ni, and Cu)/MgO(100)), the CO adsorption site inverts for Pt3Co/MgO(100) from Pt to Co, due to the complete uptake of Pt d-states by lattice oxygen. While this resolves the problem of Pt poisoning, good reaction kinetics are predicted through low barriers for Langmuir-Hinshelwood and Mars van Krevelen (MvK) mechanisms of CO oxidation for Pt3Co/MgO(100) and Li-doped MgO(100), respectively. Li doping in MgO(100) compensates for the charge imbalance caused by a spontaneous oxygen vacancy formation. Pt-3 Co/Li-doped MgO(100) stands out as an exceptional CO oxidation catalyst, giving an MvK reaction barrier as low as 0.11 eV. We thereby propose a novel design strategy of d-band center inversion for CO oxidation catalysts with no Pt poisoning and excellent reaction kinetics.
Bayesian parameter identification in dynamic state space models using modified measurement equations

When Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) samplers are used in problems of system parameter identification, one would face computational difficulties in dealing with large amount of measurement data and (or) low levels of measurement noise. Such exigencies are likely to occur in problems of parameter identification in dynamical systems when amount of vibratory measurement data and number of parameters to be identified could be large. In such cases, the posterior probability density function of the system parameters tends to have regions of narrow supports and a finite length MCMC chain is unlikely to cover pertinent regions. The present study proposes strategies based on modification of measurement equations and subsequent corrections, to alleviate this difficulty. This involves artificial enhancement of measurement noise, assimilation of transformed packets of measurements, and a global iteration strategy to improve the choice of prior models. Illustrative examples cover laboratory studies on a time variant dynamical system and a bending-torsion coupled, geometrically non-linear building frame under earthquake support motions. Gold-core platinum-shell (Au@Pt) nanoparticles with ultrathin platinum overlayers, ranging from submonolayer to two monolayers of platinum atoms, were prepared at room-temperature using a scalable, wet-chemical synthesis route. The synthesis involved the reduction of chloroauric acid with tannic acid to form 5 nm (nominal dia.) gold nanoparticles followed by addition of desired amount of chloroplatinic acid and hydrazine to form platinum overlayers with bulk Pt/Au atomic ratios (Pt surface coverages) corresponding to 0.19 (half monolayer), 0.39 (monolayer), 0.58 (1.5 monolayer) and 0.88 (2 monolayers). The colloidal particles were coated with octadecanethiol and phase-transferred into chlroform-hexane mixture to facilitate sample preparation for structural characterization. The structure of the resultant nanoparticles were determined to be Au@Pt using HRTEM, SAED, XPS, UV-vis and confirmed by cyclic voltammetry (CV) studies. Monolayers of octadecanethiol coated Au@Pt nanoparticles were self-assembled at an air-water interface and transfer printed twice onto a gold substrate to form bilayer films for electrochemical characterization. Electrochemical activity on such films was observed only after the removal of the octadecanethiol ligand coating the nanoparticles, using a RF plasma etching process. The electrochemical activity (HOR, MOR studies) of Au@Pt nanoparticles was found to be highest for particles having a two atom thick platinum overlayer. These nanoparticles can significantly enhance platinum utilization in electrocatalytic applications as their platinum content based activity was three times higher than pure platinum nanoparticles.

One new homoleptic Bi(dtc)(3)] (1) (dtc = 4-hydroxypiperdine dithiocarbamate) has been synthesized and characterized by microanalysis, IR, UV-Vis, H-1 and C-13 spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography. The photoluminescence spectrum for the compound in DMSO solution was recorded. The crystal structure of 1 displayed distorted octahedral geometry around the Bi(III) center bonded through sulfur atoms of the dithiocarbamate ligands. TGA indicates that the compound decomposes to a Bi and Bi-S phase system. The Bi and Bi-S obtained from decomposition of the compound have been characterized by pXRD, EDAX and SEM. Solvothermal decomposition of 1 in the absence and presence of two different capping agents yielded three morphologically different Bi2S3 systems which were deployed as counter-electrode in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Interdiffusion study is conducted in the Ni-rich part of the beta-Ni(Pt)Al phase following the pseudo-binary approach. Interdiffusion coefficients over the whole composition range considered in this study increases with increase in Pt content, which is in line with the theoretical study predicting the decrease in vacancy formation and migration energy because of Pt addition. The trend of change in diffusion coefficient with the increase in Ni and Pt contents indicates that Pt preferably replaces Ni antisites.

Compressive Sensing (CS) theory combines the signal sampling and compression for sparse signals resulting in reduction in sampling rate. In recent years, many recovery algorithms have been proposed to reconstruct the signal efficiently. Subspace Pursuit and Compressive Sampling Matching Pursuit are some of the popular greedy methods. Also, Fusion of Algorithms for Compressed Sensing is a recently proposed method where several CS reconstruction algorithms participate and the final estimate of the underlying sparse signal is determined by fusing the estimates obtained from the participating algorithms. All these methods involve solving a least squares problem which may be ill-conditioned, especially in the low dimension measurement regime. In this paper, we propose a step prior to least squares to ensure the well-conditioning of the least squares problem. Using Monte Carlo simulations, we show that in low dimension measurement scenario, this modification improves the reconstruction capability of the algorithm in clean as well as noisy measurement cases.

We explore the effect of modification to Einstein's gravity in white dwarfs for the first time in the literature, to the best of our knowledge. This leads to significantly sub- and super-Chandrasekhar limiting masses of white dwarfs, determined by a single model parameter. On the other hand, type Ia supernovae (SNeIa), a key to unravel the evolutionary history of the universe, are believed to be triggered in white dwarfs having mass close to the Chandrasekhar limit. However, observations of several peculiar, under- and over-luminous SNeIa argue for exploding masses widely different from this limit. We argue that explosions of the modified gravity induced sub- and super-Chandrasekhar limiting mass white dwarfs result in under- and over-luminous SNeIa respectively, thus unifying these two apparently disjoint sub-classes and, hence, serving as a missing link. Our discovery raises two fundamental questions. Is the Chandrasekhar limit unique? Is Einstein's gravity the ultimate theory for understanding astronomical phenomena? Both the answers appear to be no!

High sensitivity gas sensors are typically realized using metal catalysts and nanostructured materials, utilizing non-conventional synthesis and processing techniques, incompatible with on-chip integration of sensor arrays. In this work, we report a new device architecture, suspended core-shell Pt-PtOx nanostructure that is fully CMOS-compatible. The device consists of a metal gate core, embedded within a partially suspended semiconductor shell with source and drain contacts in the anchored region. The reduced work function in suspended region, coupled with builtin electric field of metal-semiconductor junction, enables the modulation of drain current, due to room temperature Redox reactions on exposure to gas. The device architecture is validated using Pt-PtO2 suspended nanostructure for sensing H-2 down to 200 ppb under room temperature. By exploiting catalytic activity of PtO2, in conjunction with its p-type semiconducting behavior, we demonstrate about two orders of magnitude improvement in sensitivity and limit of detection, compared to the sensors reported in recent literature. Pt thin film, deposited on SiO2, is lithographically patterned and converted into suspended Pt-PtO2 sensor, in a single step isotropic SiO2 etching. An optimum design space for the sensor is elucidated with the initial Pt film thickness ranging between 10 nm and 30 nm, for low power (< 5 mu W), room temperature operation. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) find use in different biomedical applications including wound healing and cancer. We propose that the efficacy of the nanoparticles can be further augmented by using these particles for gene delivery applications. The objective of this work was to engineer biofunctionalized stable AgNPs with good DNA binding ability for efficient transfection and minimal toxicity. Herein, we report on the one-pot facile green synthesis of polyethylene glycol (PEG) stabilized chitosan-g-polyacrylamide modified AgNPs. The size of the PEG stabilized AgNPs was 38 +/- 4 nm with a tighter size distribution compared to the unstabilized nanoparticles which showed bimodal distribution of particle sizes of 68 +/- 5 nm and 7 +/- 4 nm. To enhance the efficiency of gene transfection, the Arg-Gly-Asp-Ser (RGDS) peptide was immobilized on the silver nanoparticles. The transfection efficiency of AgNPs increased significantly after immobilization of the RGDS peptide reaching up to 42 +/- 4% and 30 +/- 3% in HeLa and A549 cells, respectively, and significantly higher than 34 +/- 3% and 23 +/- 2%, respectively, with the use of polyethyleneimine (25 kDa). These nanoparticles were found to induce minimal cellular toxicity. Differences in cellular uptake mechanisms with RGDS immobilization resulting in improved efficiency are elucidated. This study presents biofunctionalized AgNPs for potential use as efficient nonviral carriers for gene delivery with minimal cytotoxicity toward augmenting the therapeutic efficacy of AgNPs used in different biomedical products.

Pt-supported La1-xSrxCoO3 and Pt-doped La1-xSrxCoO3 are synthesized using chemical reduction and solution combustion method, respectively. Chemical reduction is carried out using formaldehyde as a reducing agent giving Pt-supported La1-xSrxCoO3. Solution combustion method is used to prepare Pt-doped La1-xSrxCoO3. Detailed characterization using X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area measurement, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) is carried out to distinguish the Pt-supported and Pt-doped compounds in terms of their morphology and Pt oxidations states. TEM results indeed show the differences in their morphology. Further, electrochemical measurements are performed in neutral medium to differentiate their electrochemical activity. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) shows noticeable differences between Pt-supported La1-xSrxCoO3 and Pt-doped La1-xSrxCoO3. Importantly, our results show that Pt4+ in doped compound has poor to zero electrocatalytic activity toward formic acid and methanol electro-oxidation in comparison to Pt-0 in supported compound. This study shows that metallic Pt in zero oxidation state is a superior catalyst to Pt in +4 oxidation state.

Strontium modified barium zirconium titanate with general formula Ba1-xSrxZr0.05Ti0.95O3 ceramics have been prepared by solid state and high energy ball milling technique. The X-ray diffraction and Rietveld refinement studies show that all the compositions have single phase symmetry. The composition BaZr0.05Ti0.95O3 shows orthorhombic symmetric with space group Amm2. The structure changes from orthorhombic to tetragonal with strontium doping up to x = 0.3 and with further addition, changes to cubic. The scanning electron micrographs show that the grain size decreases with increase in strontium content. The temperature dependent dielectric behavior shows three phase transition in the parent material which merges with an increase in Sr content The transition temperature and dielectric constant decreases with an increase in Sr concentration. The phase transition becomes more diffused with increment in doping concentration. The ferroelectric behavior of the ceramics is studied by the hysteresis loop. The optical behavior is studied by the UV-visible spectroscopy and found that the optical band gap increases with Sr concentration. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Diffusion couple experiments are conducted in Co-Ni-Pt system at 1200 degrees C and in Co-Ni-Fe system at 1150 degrees C, by coupling binary alloys with the third element. Uphill diffusion is observed for both Co and Ni in Pt rich corner of the Co-Ni-Pt system, whereas in the Co-Ni-Fe system, it is observed for Co. Main and cross interdiffusion coefficients are calculated at the composition of intersection of two independent diffusion profiles. In both the systems, the main interdiffusion coefficients are positive over the whole composition range and the cross interdiffusion coefficients show both positive and negative values at different regions. Hardness measured by performing the nanoindentations on diffusion couples of both the systems shows the higher values at intermediate compositions.

This work presents a new electrode, 2-benzoylnaphtho 2,1-b]furan hydrazone exfoliated graphite paste electrode (B-EGPE) fabricated for the differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetric determination of lead (Pb). Under the optimal conditions, Pb2+ could be detected in the concentration range from 2.75 x 10(-7) to 1.5 x 10(-6) mol/L with the linear regression equation, y = 19.41 x 10(-6) x + 0.4249 x 10(-9) with R = 0.99. Interferences from other ions were investigated and the proposed method was further applied to the trace levels of Pb2+ detection in real samples with satisfactory results.

This paper proposes a technique to cause unidirectional ion ejection in a quadrupole ion trap mass spectrometer operated in the resonance ejection mode. In this technique a modified auxiliary dipolar excitation signal is applied to the endcap electrodes. This modified signal is a linear combination of two signals. The first signal is the nominal dipolar excitation signal which is applied across the endcap electrodes and the second signal is the second harmonic of the first signal, the amplitude of the second harmonic being larger than that of the fundamental. We have investigated the effect of the following parameters on achieving unidirectional ion ejection: primary signal amplitude, ratio of amplitude of second harmonic to that of primary signal amplitude, different operating points, different scan rates, different mass to charge ratios and different damping constants. In all these simulations unidirectional ejection of destabilized ions has been successfully achieved. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This paper reports an improvement in Pt/n-GaN metal-semiconductor (MS) Schottky diode characteristics by the introduction of a layer of HfO2 (5 nm) between the metal and semiconductor interface. The resulting Pt/HfO2/n-GaN metal-insulator-semiconductor (MIS) Schottky diode showed an increase in rectification ratio from 35.9 to 98.9(@ 2V), increase in barrier height (0.52 eV to 0.63eV) and a reduction in ideality factor (2.1 to 1.3) as compared to the MS Schottky. Epitaxial n-type GaN films of thickness 300nm were grown using plasma assisted molecular beam epitaxy (PAMBE). The crystalline and optical qualities of the films were confirmed using high resolution X-ray diffraction and photoluminescence measurements. Metal-semiconductor (Pt/n-GaN) and metal-insulator-semiconductor (Pt/HfO2/n-GaN) Schottky diodes were fabricated. To gain further understanding of the Pt/HfO2/GaN interface, I-V characterisation was carried out on the MIS Schottky diode over a temperature range of 150 K to 370 K. The barrier height was found to increase (0.3 eV to 0.79 eV) and the ideality factor decreased (3.6 to 1.2) with increase in temperature from 150 K to 370 K. This temperature dependence was attributed to the inhomogeneous nature of the contact and the explanation was validated by fitting the experimental data into a Gaussian distribution of barrier heights.
