Preferential accumulation and agglomeration kinetics of nanoparticles suspended in an acoustically levitated water droplet under radiative heating has been studied. Particle image velocimetry performed to map the internal flow field shows a single cell recirculation with increasing strength for decreasing viscosities. Infrared thermography and high speed imaging show details of the heating process for various concentrations of nanosilica droplets. Initial stage of heating is marked by fast vaporization of liquid and sharp temperature rise. Following this stage, aggregation of nanoparticles is seen resulting in various structure formations. At low concentrations, a bowl structure of the droplet is dominant, maintained at a constant temperature. At high concentrations, viscosity of the solution increases, leading to rotation about the levitator axis due to the dominance of centrifugal motion. Such complex fluid motion inside the droplet due to acoustic streaming eventually results in the formation of a ring structure. This horizontal ring eventually reorients itself due to an imbalance of acoustic forces on the ring, exposing larger area for laser absorption and subsequent sharp temperature rise.

The commercial automotive mufflers are generally of a complicated shape with multiply connected parts and complex acoustic elements. The analysis of such complex mufflers has always been a great challenge. In this paper, an Integrated Transfer Matrix method has been developed to analyze complex mufflers. Integrated transfer matrix relates the state variables across the entire cross-section of the muffler shell, as one moves along the axis of the muffler, and can be partitioned appropriately in order to relate the state variables of different tubes constituting the cross-section. The paper presents a generalized one-dimensional (1-D) approach, using the transfer matrices of simple acoustic elements, which are available from the literature. The present approach is robust and flexible owing to its capability to construct an overall matrix of the muffler with the transfer matrices of individual acoustic elements and boundary conditions, which can then be used to evaluate the transmission loss, insertion loss, etc. Results from the present approach have been validated through comparisons with the available experimental and three-dimensional finite element method (FEM) based results. The results show good agreement with both measurements and FEM analysis up to the cut-off frequency. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In this study, we present the spontaneous self-assembly of designed simplest aromatic cyclic dipeptides of (L-Phg-L-Phg) and (D-Phg-L-Phg) to form highly stable two-dimensional (2D) nano- and mesosheets with large lateral surface area. Various microscopy data revealed that the morphology of 2D mesosheets resembles the hierarchical natural materials with layered structure. Solution and solid-state NMR studies on cyclo(L-Phg-L-Phg) revealed the presence of strong (N-H-O) hydrogen-bonded molecular chains supported by aromatic pi-pi interactions to form 2D mesosheets. Interestingly, cyclo(D-Phg-L-Phg) self-assembles to form single-crystalline as well as non-crystalline 2D rhomboid sheets with large lateral dimension. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed the stacking of (N-H-O) hydrogen-bonded molecular layers along c-axis supported by aromatic pi-pi interactions. The thermogravimetric analysis shows two transitions with overall high thermal stability attributed to layered hierarchy found in 2D mesosheets.

This paper reports the dynamic stability analysis of a single machine infinite bus system through torque angle loop analysis and forms an extension of the work on Block diagrams and torque angle loop analysis of synchronous machines reported by I. Nagy [3]. It aims to incorporate in the machine model, the damper windings (one on each axis) and to compare the dynamic behaviour of the system with and without damper windings. The effect of using different stabilizing signals (viz. active power and speed deviations) on the dynamic performance is analysed and the significant effect of damper windings on the dynamic behaviour of the system is highlighted.

High temperature bonded interface indentation experiments are carried out on a Zr based bulk metallic glass (BMG) to examine the plastic deformation characteristics in subsurface deformation zone under a Vickers indenter. The results show that the shear bands are semi-circular in shape and propagate in radial direction. At all temperatures the inter-band spacing along the indentation axis is found to increase with increasing distance from the indenter tip. The average shear band spacing monotonically increases with temperature whereas the shear band induced plastic deformation zone is invariant with temperature. These observations are able to explain the increase in pressure sensitive plastic flow of BMGs with temperature. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We propose fundamental improvements in three-dimensional (3D) resolution of multiple excitation spot optical microscopy. The excitation point spread function (PSF) is generated by two interfering counter-propagating depth-of-focus beams along the optical axis. Detection PSF is obtained by coherently interfering the emitted fluorescent light (collected by both the objectives) at the detector. System PSF shows upto 14-fold reduction in focal volume as compared to confocal, and almost 2-fold improvement in lateral resolution. Proposed PSF has the ability to simultaneously excite multiple 3D-spots of sub-femtoliter volume. Potential applications are in fluorescence microscopy and nanobioimaging. Copyright 2011 Author(s). In order to resolve some missing micromechanistic details regarding contact deformation in nitride multilayer coatings we report here observations from cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy and focused ion beam studies of the Vickers indentations on TiN/TiAlN multilayer films of various total thicknesses as well as bilayer periods. The study of damage induced by contact deformation in a nitride multilayer coating is complemented by stress calculated using an analytical model. Kinked boundaries of sliding columns give rise to cracks which propagate at an angle to the indentation axis under a combination of compressive and shear stresses. It is seen that multilayers provide more distributed columnar sliding, thereby reducing the stress intensity factor for shear cracking, while interfacial dislocations provide a stress relief mechanism by enabling lateral movement of material. Motion analysis is very essential in sport activities to enhance the performance of an athlete and to ensure the correctness of regimes. Expensive methods of motion analysis involving the use of sophisticated technology has led to limited application of motion analysis in sports. Towards this, in this paper we have integrated a low-cost method for motion analysis using three axis accelerometer, three axis magnetometer and microcontroller which are very accurate and easy to use. Seventeen male subjects performed two experiments, standing short jumps and long jumps over a wide range of take-off angles. During take-off and landing the acceleration and angles at different joints of the body are recorded using accelerometers and magnetometers, and the data is captured using Lab VIEW software. Optimum take-off angle in these jumps are calculated using the recorded data, to identify the optimum projection angle that maximizes the distance achieved in a jump. The results obtained for optimum take off angle in short jump and long jump is in agreement with those obtained using other methodologies and theoretical calculations assuming jump to be a projectile motion. The impact force (acceleration) is also analysed and is found to progressively decrease from foot to neck.

Electromagnetic characteristics like absorption and electric field distributions of metallic carbon nanotubes are simulated using the discrete dipole approximation. Absorption of electromagnetic energy over a range of frequencies are studied for both parallel and perpendicular incidence of light to the axis of carbon nanotube. Our simulations show 30% enhancement of electric field in the radial direction for nanotubes with axial strain of 0.2 when compared to unstrained nanotubes in case of parallel incidence of light. Simulations for perpendicular incidence of light show an oscillatory behavior for the electric field in the axial direction. Analysis of simulation results indicate potential applications in designing nanostructured antennae and electromagnetic transmission/shielding using CNT-composite.

We report the temperature and magnetic field dependence of the conductivity of multiwall carbon nanotube mat in the temperature range 1.4-150 K and in magnetic fields up to 10 T. It is observed that charge transport in this system is governed by Mott's variable-range hopping of three-dimensional type in the higher temperature range and two-dimensional type in the lower temperature range. Mott's various parameters, such as localization length, hopping length, hopping energy and density of states at the Fermi level are deduced from the variable-range hopping fit. The resistance of the sample decreases with the magnetic field applied in the direction of tube axis of the nanotubes. The magnetic field gives rise to delocalization of states with the well-known consequence of a decrease in Mott's T-0 parameter in variable-range hopping. The application of magnetic field lowers the crossover temperature at which three-dimensional variable-range hopping turns to two-dimensional variable-range hopping. The conductivity on the lower temperature side is governed by the weak localization giving rise to positive magnetoconductance. Finally, a magnetic field-temperature diagram is proposed showing different regions for different kinds of transport mechanism.

A Monte Carlo model of ultrasound modulation of multiply scattered coherent light in a highly scattering media has been carried out for estimating the phase shift experienced by a photon beam on its transit through US insonified region. The phase shift is related to the tissue stiffness, thereby opening an avenue for possible breast tumor detection. When the scattering centers in the tissue medium is exposed to a deterministic forcing with the help of a focused ultrasound (US) beam, due to the fact that US-induced oscillation is almost along particular direction, the direction defined by the transducer axis, the scattering events increase, thereby increasing the phase shift experienced by light that traverses through the medium. The phase shift is found to increase with increase in anisotropy g of the medium. However, as the size of the focused region which is the region of interest (ROI) increases, a large number of scattering events take place within the ROI, the ensemble average of the phase shift (Delta phi) becomes very close to zero. The phase of the individual photon is randomly distributed over 2 pi when the scattered photon path crosses a large number of ultrasound wavelengths in the focused region. This is true at high ultrasound frequency (1 MHz) when mean free path length of photon l(s) is comparable to wavelength of US beam. However, at much lower US frequencies (100 Hz), the wavelength of sound is orders of magnitude larger than l(s), and with a high value of g (g 0.9), there is a distinct measurable phase difference for the photon that traverses through the insonified region. Experiments are carried out for validation of simulation results.

In the present study, asymmetric rolling was carried out for incorporating a shear component during the rolling at different temperatures, and was compared with conventional (symmetric) rolling. The microstructures were investigated using electron back-scatter diffraction (EBSD). The strain incorporated was compared with the help of grain orientation spread (GOS). GOS was eventually used as a criterion to partition the microstructure for separating the deformed and the dynamically recrystallized (DRX) grains. The texture of the partitioned DRX grains was shifted by similar to 30 degrees along the c-axis from the deformed grains. The mechanism of dynamic recrystallization (DRX) has been identified as continuous dynamic recovery and recrystallization (CDRR). The partitioned deformed grains for the higher temperature rolled specimens exhibited a texture similar to the room temperature rolled specimen. The asymmetric rolling introduces a shear component which shifts the texture fibre by similar to 5-10 degrees from the conventional rolling texture. This led to an increase in ductility with little compromise on strength. (c) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We observe an unusual tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) phenomenon in a composite of La2/3Sr1/3MnO3 with CoFe2O4 where the TMR versus applied magnetic field loop suggests a ``negative coercive field.'' Tracing its origin back to a ``dipolar-biasing'' of La2/3Sr1/3MnO3 by CoFe2O4, we show that the TMR of even a single composite can be tuned continuously so that the resistance peak or the highest sensitivity of the TMR can be positioned anywhere on the magnetic field axis with a suitable magnetic history of the sample. This phenomenon of an unprecedented tunability of the TMR should be present in general in all such composites. (C) 2012 American Institute of Physics.http://dx.doi.org/10.1063/1.4731206]

Using all-atom molecular dynamics simulation, we have studied the effect of size and temperature on the strain induced phase transition of wurtzite CdSe nanowires. The wurtzite structure transforms into a five-fold coordinated structure under uniaxial strain along the c axis. Our results show that lower temperature and smaller size of the nanowires stabilize the five-fold coordinated phase which is not a stable structure in bulk CdSe. High reversibility of this transformation with a very small heat loss will make these nanowires suitable for building efficient nanodevices. We study the shape parameters of the Dπ scalar and vector form factors using as input dispersion relations and unitarity for the moments of suitable heavy-light correlators evaluated with Operator Product Expansions, including O(α 2 s) terms in perturbative QCD. For the scalar form factor, a low energy theorem and phase information on the unitarity cut are implemented to further constrain the shape parameters. We finally determine points on the real axis and isolate regions in the complex energy plane where zeros of the form factors are excluded.
