It is a well-known fact that most of the developing countries have intermittent water supply and the quantity of water supplied from the source is also not distributed equitably among the consumers. Aged pipelines, pump failures, and improper management of water resources are some of the main reasons for it. This study presents the application of a nonlinear control technique to overcome this problem in different zones in the city of Bangalore. The water is pumped to the city from a large distance of approximately 100km over a very high elevation of approximately 400m. The city has large undulating terrain among different zones, which leads to unequal distribution of water. The Bangalore, inflow water-distribution system (WDS) has been modeled. A dynamic inversion (DI) nonlinear controller with proportional integral derivative (PID) features (DI-PID) is used for valve throttling to achieve the target flows to different zones of the city. This novel approach of equitable water distribution using DI-PID controllers that can be used as a decision support system is discussed in this paper.

Interaction of adsorbate on charged surfaces, orientation of the analyte on the surface, and surface enhancement aspects have been studied. These aspects have been explored in details to explain the surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopic (SERS) spectra of 2,4,6,8,10,12-hexanitro-2,4,6,8,10,12-hexaazaisowurtzitane (HNIW or CL-20), a well-known explosive, and 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) using one-pot synthesis of silver nanoparticles via biosynthetic route using natural precursor extracts of clove and pepper. The biosynthesized silver nanoparticles (bio Ag Nps) have been characterized using UV-vis spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. SERS studies conducted using bio Ag Nps on different water insoluble analytes, such as CL-20 and TNT, lead to SERS signals at concentration levels of 400 pM. The experimental findings have been corroborated with density functional computational results, electrostatic surface potential calculations, Fukui functions and potential measurements.

alpha-Amino gamma-lactams have been synthesized from carbohydrate derived cyclopropanecarboxylates using N-iodosuccinimide (NIS) and NaN3. Cyclopropane ring opening with NIS and NaN3 in different solvents has been studied. Reductive cyclization of the intermediate di-azides leads to the carbohydrate fused alpha-amino gamma-lactam and gamma-lactams. Additionally, the methodology has been successfully extended to the synthesis of a glycopeptide. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In-Cu composite solders have been proposed as an effective thermal interface material. Here, finite element analysis and theoretical treatment of their mechanical and thermal behavior is presented. It was determined that the stresses and the strains were concentrated in the narrow and wider In channels, respectively. Furthermore, it is suggested that an In-Cu composite with disk-shaped Cu inclusions may not only further improve the thermal conductivity but may also reduce the stiffness of In-Cu composites in shear.

We report here the growth of epitaxial Co metal thin film on c-plane sapphire by pulsed laser deposition (RD) using Co:ZnO target utilizing the composition inhomogeneity of the corresponding plasma. Two distinct plasma composition regions have been observed using heavily alloyed Co0.6Zn0.4O target. The central and intense region of the plasma grows Co:ZnO film; the extreme tail grows only Co metal with no trace of either ZnO or Co oxide In between the two extremes, mixed phases (Co +Co-oxides +Co:ZnO) were observed. The Co metal thin film grown in this way shows room temperature ferromagnetism with large in plane magnetization similar to 1288 emu cm(-3) and a coerciviLy of similar to 230 Oe with applied field parallel to the film-substrate interface. Carrier density of the film is similar to 10(22) cm(-3). The film is epiLaxial single phase Co metal which is confirmed by both X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy characierizaLions. Planar Hall Effect (PHE) and Magneto Optic Kerr Effect (MOKE) measurements confirm that the film possesses similar attributes of Co metal. The result shows that the epiLaxial Co metal thin film can be grown from its oxides in the PLD. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Alumina thin films were deposited on titanium (Ti) and fused quartz by both direct and reactive pulsed rf magnetron sputtering techniques. X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy were utilized to study the phases and surface morphology of the films. The as-deposited alumina thin films were amorphous. However, after annealing at 500 degrees C in vacuum, the crystalline peaks corresponding to the Theta (0), Delta (8) and Chi ()) alumina phases were obtained. The optical transmittance and reflectance as well as IR emittanc,e data were also evaluated for the thin films. The transmittance, e.g., (similar to 90%) of the bare quartz substrate was not changed even when the alumina thin films were deposited for an hour. However, further increase in deposition time (e.g., 7 h) of the alumina thin films showed only a marginal decrease (e.g., similar to 5%) in average transmittance of the bare quartz substrate. The direct and indirect optical band gaps and extinction coefficient of the alumina films were estimated from the transmittance spectra. The IR emittance of the Ti substrate (e.g., similar to 16%) was almost constant after depositing alumina thin films for an hour. Further increase in deposition time showed only a marginal increase (e.g., similar to 9%) in IR emittance value. Therefore, it is proposed that the alumina films developed in the present work can act as a protective cover for the Ti substrate while retaining the thermo-optical properties of the same. The nanohardness and Young's modulus of the alumina thin films were evaluated by the novel nanoindentation technique. The nanohardness was measured as similar to 6 GPa. Further, Young's modulus was evaluated as similar to 116 GPa. The magnitudes of the nanomechanical properties of the thin films were a little smaller than those reported in the literature. This was linked to the lack of crystalline phases in the as-deposited alumina thin films. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l. All rights reserved.

In the present investigation, Al2O3 thin films were deposited onto Si < 100 > substrates by DC reactive magnetron sputtering. The films were annealed in vacuum for one hour at 623, 823 and 1023 K. The composition of the films was quantitatively estimated using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and the O/Al ratio was found be in the range 1.19 to 1.43. Grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXRD) results revealed that the annealed films are amorphous in nature. Cross sectional transmission electron microscopy (X-TEM) analysis was carried out to study the microstructure and nature of the Al2O3-Si interface as a function of post-deposition annealing. TEM results revealed the presence of nanocrystalline gamma-Al2O3 in the annealed films and an amorphous interface layer was observed at the Al2O3 Si interface. The thickness of the amorphous interface layer was determined from the TEM analysis and the results are discussed.

We have investigated the effect of post- deposition annealing on the composition and electrical properties of alumina (Al2O3) thin films. Al2O3 were deposited on n-type Si < 100 >. substrates by dc reactive magnetron sputtering. The films were subjected to post- deposition annealing at 623, 823 and 1023 K in vacuum. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results revealed that the composition improved with post- deposition annealing, and the film annealed at 1023 K became stoichiometric with an O/Al atomic ratio of 1.49. Al/Al2O3/Si metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) structures were then fabricated, and a correlation between the dielectric constant epsilon(r) and interface charge density Q(i) with annealing conditions were studied. The dielectric constant of the Al2O3 thin films increased to 9.8 with post- deposition annealing matching the bulk value, whereas the oxide charge density decreased to 3.11 x 10(11) cm(-2.) Studies on current-voltage IV characteristics indicated ohmic and Schottky type of conduction at lower electric fields (<0.16 MV cm(-1)) and space charge limited conduction at higher electric fields.

A model has been developed to simulate the foam characteristics obtained, when chemical (water) and physical (Freon) blowing agents are used together for the formation of polyurethane foams. The model considers the rate of reaction, the consequent rise in temperature of the reaction mixture, nucleation of bubbles, and mass transfer of CO2 and Freon to them till the time of gelation. The model is able to explain the experimental results available in literature. It further predicts that the nucleation period gets reduced with increase in water (at constant Freon content), whereas with increase in Freon (at constant water) concentration nucleation period decreases marginally leading to narrower bubble-size distribution. By the use of uniform sized nuclei added initially, the model predicts that the bubble-size distribution can be made independent of the rate of homogeneous nucleation and can, thus, offer an extra parameter for its control. With the preponderance of multidomain proteins in eukaryotic genomes, it is essential to recognize the constituent domains and their functions. Often function involves communications across the domain interfaces, and the knowledge of the interacting sites is essential to our understanding of the structure-function relationship. Using evolutionary information extracted from homologous domains in at least two diverse domain architectures (single and multidomain), we predict the interface residues corresponding to domains from the two-domain proteins. We also use information from the three-dimensional structures of individual domains of two-domain proteins to train naive Bayes classifier model to predict the interfacial residues. Our predictions are highly accurate (approximate to 85%) and specific (approximate to 95%) to the domain-domain interfaces. This method is specific to multidomain proteins which contain domains in at least more than one protein architectural context. Using predicted residues to constrain domain-domain interaction, rigid-body docking was able to provide us with accurate full-length protein structures with correct orientation of domains. We believe that these results can be of considerable interest toward rational protein and interaction design, apart from providing us with valuable information on the nature of interactions. Global change in climate and consequent large impacts on regional hydrologic systems have, in recent years, motivated significant research efforts in water resources modeling under climate change. In an integrated future hydrologic scenario, it is likely that water availability and demands will change significantly due to modifications in hydro-climatic variables such as rainfall, reservoir inflows, temperature, net radiation, wind speed and humidity. An integrated regional water resources management model should capture the likely impacts of climate change on water demands and water availability along with uncertainties associated with climate change impacts and with management goals and objectives under non-stationary conditions. Uncertainties in an integrated regional water resources management model, accumulating from various stages of decision making include climate model and scenario uncertainty in the hydro-climatic impact assessment, uncertainty due to conflicting interests of the water users and uncertainty due to inherent variability of the reservoir inflows. This paper presents an integrated regional water resources management modeling approach considering uncertainties at various stages of decision making by an integration of a hydro-climatic variable projection model, a water demand quantification model, a water quantity management model and a water quality control model. Modeling tools of canonical correlation analysis, stochastic dynamic programming and fuzzy optimization are used in an integrated framework, in the approach presented here. The proposed modeling approach is demonstrated with the case study of the Bhadra Reservoir system in Karnataka, India.

Stability of a fracture toughness testing geometry is important to determine the crack trajectory and R-curve behavior of the specimen. Few configurations provide for inherent geometric stability, especially when the specimen being tested is brittle. We propose a new geometrical construction called the single edge notched clamped bend specimen (SENCB), a modified form of three point bending, yielding stable cracking under load control. It is shown to be particularly suitable for small-scale structures which cannot be made free-standing, (e.g., thin films, coatings). The SENCB is elastically clamped at the two ends to its parent material. A notch is inserted at the bottom center and loaded in bending, to fracture. Numerical simulations are carried out through extended finite element method to derive the geometrical factor f(a/W) and for different beam dimensions. Experimental corroborations of the FEM results are carried out on both micro-scale and macro-scale brittle specimens. A plot of vs a/W, is shown to rise initially and fall off, beyond a critical a/W ratio. The difference between conventional SENB and SENCB is highlighted in terms of and FEM simulated stress contours across the beam cross-section. The `s of bulk NiAl and Si determined experimentally are shown to match closely with literature values. Crack stability and R-curve effect is demonstrated in a PtNiAl bond coat sample and compared with predicted crack trajectories from the simulations. The stability of SENCB is shown for a critical range of a/W ratios, proving that it can be used to get controlled crack growth even in brittle samples under load control.

In response to the Indian Monsoon freshwater forcing, the Bay of Bengal exhibits a very strong seasonal cycle in sea surface salinity (SSS), especially near the mouths of the Ganges-Brahmaputra and along the east coast of India. In this paper, we use an eddy-permitting (similar to 25 km resolution) regional ocean general circulation model simulation to quantify the processes responsible for this SSS seasonal cycle. Despite the absence of relaxation toward observations, the model reproduces the main features of the observed SSS seasonal cycle, with freshest water in the northeastern Bay, particularly during and after the monsoon. The model also displays an intense and shallow freshening signal in a narrow (similar to 100 km wide) strip that hugs the east coast of India, from September to January, in good agreement with high-resolution measurements along two ships of opportunity lines. The mixed layer salt budget confirms that the strong freshening in the northern Bay during the monsoon results from the Ganges-Brahmaputra river discharge and from precipitation over the ocean. From September onward, the East India Coastal Current transports this freshwater southward along the east coast of India, reaching the southern tip of India in November. The surface freshening results in an enhanced vertical salinity gradient that increases salinity of the surface layer by vertical processes. Our results reveal that the erosion of the freshwater tongue along the east coast of India is not driven by northward horizontal advection, but by vertical processes that eventually overcome the freshening by southward advection and restore SSS to its premonsoon values. The salinity-stratified barrier layer hence only acts as a ``barrier'' for vertical heat fluxes, but is associated with intense vertical salt fluxes in the Bay of Bengal.

A mathematical model is developed to simulate the transport and deposition of virus-sized colloids in a cylindrical pore throat considering various processes such as advection, diffusion, colloid-collector surface interactions and hydrodynamic wall effects. The pore space is divided into three different regions, namely, bulk, diffusion and potential regions, based on the dominant processes acting in each of these regions. In the bulk region, colloid transport is governed by advection and diffusion whereas in the diffusion region, colloid mobility due to diffusion is retarded by hydrodynamic wall effects. Colloid-collector interaction forces dominate the transport in the potential region where colloid deposition occurs. The governing equations are non-dimensionalized and solved numerically. A sensitivity analysis indicates that the virus-sized colloid transport and deposition is significantly affected by various pore-scale parameters such as the surface potentials on colloid and collector, ionic strength of the solution, flow velocity, pore size and colloid size. The adsorbed concentration and hence, the favorability of the surface for adsorption increases with: (i) decreasing magnitude and ratio of surface potentials on colloid and collector, (ii) increasing ionic strength and (iii) increasing pore radius. The adsorbed concentration increases with increasing Pe, reaching a maximum value at Pe = 0.1 and then decreases thereafter. Also, the colloid size significantly affects particle deposition with the adsorbed concentration increasing with increasing particle radius, reaching a maximum value at a particle radius of 100 nm and then decreasing with increasing radius. System hydrodynamics is found to have a greater effect on larger particles than on smaller ones. The secondary minimum contribution to particle deposition has been found to increase as the favorability of the surface for adsorption decreases. The sensitivity of the model to a given parameter will be high if the conditions are favorable for adsorption. The results agree qualitatively with the column-scale experimental observations available in the literature. The current model forms the building block in upscaling colloid transport from pore scale to Darcy scale using Pore-Network Modeling. (C) 2014 Elsevier By. All rights reserved.

The current manuscript describes conformational analysis of 15-membered cyclic tetrapeptides (CTPs), with alpha 3 delta architecture, containing sugar amino acids (SAA) having variation in the stereocenter at C5 carbon. Conformational analyses of both the series, in protected and deprotected forms, were carried out in DMSO-d(6) using various NMR techniques, supported by restrained MD calculations. It was intriguing to notice that the alpha 3 delta macrocycles got stabilized by both 10-membered beta-turn as well as a seven-membered gamma-turn, fused within the same macrocycle. The presence of fused sub-structures within a 15-membered macrocycle is rare to see. Also, the stereocenter variation at C5 did not affect the fused turn structures and exhibited similar conformations in both the series. The design becomes highly advantageous as fused reverse turn structures are occurring in the cyclic structure with minimalistic size macrocycle and this can be applied to develop suitable pharmacophores in the drug development process.
