The conclusion that the number of species co-existing within a biological community cannot exceed the number of limiting factors is not valid if we assume that (i) the relative efficiency of two competing species in utilizing a resource is not independent of the resource density, but one species may be more efficient at a lower density and less efficient at a higher density and (ii) there is a spatial or temporal heterogeneity in the density of the resource. This spatial or temporal heterogeneity does not have to be furnished by factors external to the biological community, but may be generated within the biological community itself as in the case of a vertical gradient of light in a plant community. This possibility of a stable co-existence of more than one species in a community limited by a single resource, even when the resource is being supplied uniformly in space and time, is formally demonstrated.

Thin films of indium-tin oxide have been deposited by DC diode sputtering from an indium-tin alloy target in an argon, hydrogen and oxygen atmosphere. Films with sheet resistance of 11 ohms/square and 80% light transmission have been obtained. The effect of cathode composition and gas mixture on sheet resistance and optical transmission properties of the films have been studied.

Rates of oxidation of p-xylene were measured in the temperature range 320 to 420 °C using tin vanadate as catalyst in an isothermal differential flow reactor. The amounts of p-xylene converted were determined by analyzing the main products (p-tolualdehyde, maleic anhydride, p-toluic acid and traces of terephthalic acid). Negligible amounts of products of complete combustion were formed. The reaction rates obtained for p-xylene followed the relation, Image based on the redox model. The mechanism of the reaction was determined by conducting different sets of experiments and it was found that the reaction followed the parallel-consecutive mechanism, in which p-tolualdehyde and maleic anhydride were formed from the parallel route whereas p-toluic acid was formed from the consecutive route.

The nature of coordination in metal monothiocarbamates is shown to depend on the hardness or softness of the metal ton. Thus, the monothiocarbamate ion acts as a monodentate ligand with metal-sulphur bending when the metal ion is a soft acid while it acts as a bidentate ligand when the metal ion is a hard acid; it can exhibit either behaviour when the metal ion is a borderline acid. In dialkyltin and dialkylmonocholorotin complexes, the monothiocarbamate ion acts as a bidentate ligand with strong Sn-S bonding while in trialkyl-or triaryl-tin complexes it acts essentially as a monodentate ligand. Thus, R3Sn(I) seems to be a soft or borderline acid while R2Sn(II) is a hard acid.

BACKGROUND: Particle-based agglutination tests consisting of receptors grafted to colloidal microparticles are useful for detecting small quantities of corresponding ligands of interest in fluid test samples, but detection limits of such tests are limited to a certain concentration and it is most desirable to lower the detection limits and to enhance the rate of recognition of ligands. METHODS: A mixture of receptor-coated colloidal microparticles and corresponding ligand was sandwiched between 2 indium tin oxide-coated glass plates. Electrohydrodynamic drag from an alternating-current electric field applied perpendicular to the plates increased the local concentration of the colloidal particles, improving the chances of ligand-receptor interaction and leading to the aggregation of the colloidal particles. RESULTS: With this technique the sensitivity of the ligand-receptor recognition was increased by a factor as large as 50. CONCLUSIONS: This method can improve the sensitivity of particle-based agglutination tests used in immuno-assays and many other applications such as immunoprecipitation and chemical, sniffing. Reactive Pulsed Laser Deposition is a single step process wherein the ablated elemental metal reacts with a low pressure ambient gas to form a compound. We report here a Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry based analytical methodology to conduct minimum number of experiments to arrive at optimal process parameters to obtain high quality TiN thin film. Quality of these films was confirmed by electron microscopic analysis. This methodology can be extended for optimization of other process parameters and materials. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. Suitable pin-to-hole interference can significantly increase the fatigue life of a pin joint. In practical design, the initial stresses due to interference are high and they are proportional to the effective interference. In experimental studies on such joints, difficulties have been experienced in estimating the interference accurately from physical measurements of pin and hole diameters. A simple photoelastic method has been developed to determine the effective interference to a high degree of accuracy. This paper presents the method and reports illustrative data from a successful application thereof.

Biological motion has successfully been used for analysis of a person's mood and other psychological traits. Efforts are made to use human gait as a non-invasive mode of biometric. In this reported work, we try to study the effectiveness of biological gait motion of people as a cue to biometric based person recognition. The data is 3D in nature and, hence, has more information with itself than the cues obtained from video-based gait patterns. The high accuracies of person recognition using a simple linear model of data representation and simple neighborhood based classfiers, suggest that it is the nature of the data which is more important than the recognition scheme employed.

Our concern here is to rationalize experimental observations of failure modes brought about by indentation of hard thin ceramic films deposited on metallic substrates. By undertaking this exercise, we would like to evolve an analytical framework that can be used for designs of coatings. In Part I of the paper we develop an algorithm and test it for a model system. Using this analytical framework we address the issue of failure of columnar TiN films in Part II [J. Mater. Res. 21, 783 (2006)] of the paper. In this part, we used a previously derived Hankel transform procedure to derive stress and strain in a birefringent polymer film glued to a strong substrate and subjected to spherical indentation. We measure surface radial strains using strain gauges and bulk film stresses using photo elastic technique (stress freezing). For a boundary condition based on Hertzian traction with no film interface constraint and assuming the substrate constraint to be a function of the imposed strain, the theory describes the stress distributions well. The variation in peak stresses also demonstrates the usefulness of depositing even a soft film to protect an underlying substrate.

Tin sulphide films were grown at different substrate temperatures by a thermal co-evaporation technique. The crystallinity of the films was evaluated from X-ray diffraction studies. Single-phase SnS films showed a strong (040) orientation with an orthorhombic crystal structure and a grain size of 0.12 mu m. The films showed an electrical resistivity of 6.1 Omega cm with an activation energy of 0.26 eV. These films exhibited an optical band gap of 1.37 eV and had a high optical absorption coefficient (> 10(4) cm(-1)) above the band-gap energy. The results obtained were analysed to evaluate the potentiality of the co-evaporated SnS films as an absorber layer in solar photovoltaic devices.

PbSnS2 thin film has been prepared for the first time by spray pyrolysis technique on FTO substrate at 570K. The preliminary optical and structural characteristics of the film have been reported. The optical studies showed that the value of the fundamental absorption edge lies at 1.47eV and a low energy absorption band tail has been observed. The prepared film is p- type electrical conductivity, polycrystalline in nature and has an orthorhombic crystal structure. The value of an average grain size of the film is 350Å.

The study of molecular machines, and protein complexes in general, is a growth area of biology. Is there a computational method for inferring which combinations of proteins in an organism are likely to form a crystallizable complex? We use the Protein Data Bank (PDB) to assess the usefulness of inferred functional protein linkages for this task. We find that of 242 nonredundant prokaryotic protein complexes (complexes excluding structural variants of the same protein) from organisms that are shared between the current PDB and the Prolinks functional linkage database, 44% (107/242) contain proteins that are linked at high-confidence by one or more methods of computed functional linkages. This suggests that computing functional linkages will be useful in defining protein complexes for structural studies. We offer a database of such inferred linkages corresponding to likely protein complexes for some 629,952 pairs of proteins in 154 prokaryotes and archea.
