Extensible Markup Language ( XML) has emerged as a medium for interoperability over the Internet. As the number of documents published in the form of XML is increasing, there is a need for selective dissemination of XML documents based on user interests. In the proposed technique, a combination of Adaptive Genetic Algorithms and multi class Support Vector Machine ( SVM) is used to learn a user model. Based on the feedback from the users, the system automatically adapts to the user's preference and interests. The user model and a similarity metric are used for selective dissemination of a continuous stream of XML documents. Experimental evaluations performed over a wide range of XML documents, indicate that the proposed approach significantly improves the performance of the selective dissemination task, with respect to accuracy and efficiency.

XML has emerged as a medium for interoperability over the Internet. As the number of documents published in the form of XML is increasing there is a need for selective dissemination of XML documents based on user interests. In the proposed technique, a combination of Self Adaptive Migration Model Genetic Algorithm (SAMCA)[5] and multi class Support Vector Machine (SVM) are used to learn a user model. Phenotypic flexibility, or the within-genotype, context-dependent, variation in behaviour expressed by single reproductively mature individuals during their lifetimes, often impart a selective advantage to organisms and profoundly influence their survival and reproduction. Another phenomenon apparently not under direct genetic control is behavioural inheritance whereby higher animals are able to acquire information from the behaviour of others by social learning, and, through their own modified behaviour, transmit such information between individuals and across generations. Behavioural information transfer of this nature thus represents another form of inheritance that operates in many animals in tandem with the more basic genetic system. This paper examines the impact that phenotypic flexibility, behavioural inheritance and socially transmitted cultural traditions may have in shaping the structure and dynamics of a primate society--that of the bonnet macaque (Macaca radiata), a primate species endemic to peninsular India. Three principal issues are considered: the role of phenotypic flexibility in shaping social behaviour, the occurrence of individual behavioural traits leading to the establishment of social traditions, and the appearance of cultural evolution amidst such social traditions. Although more prolonged observations are required, these initial findings suggest that phenotypic plasticity, behavioural inheritance and cultural traditions may be much more widespread among primates than have previously been assumed but may have escaped attention due to a preoccupation with genetic inheritance in zoological thinking.

The proton NMR spectral complexity arising due to severe overlap of peaks hampers their analyses in diverse situations, even by the application of two-dimensional experiments. The selective or complete removal of the couplings and retention of only the chemical shift interactions in indirect dimension aids in the simplification of the spectrum to a large extent with little investment of the instrument time. The present study provides precise enantiodiscrimination employing more anisotropic NMR parameters in the chiral liquid crystalline medium and differentiates the overlapped peaks of many organic molecules and peptides dissolved in isotropic solvents.

We report data from two related assay systems (isolated enzyme assays and whole blood assays) that C-phycocyanin a biliprotein from Spirulina platensis is a selective inhibitor of cyclooxygenase-a (COX-2) with a very low IC50 COX-2/IC50 COX-1 ratio (0.04). The extent of inhibition depends on the period of preincubation of phycocyanin with COX-2, but without any effect on the period of preincubation with COX-1. The IC50 value obtained for the inhibition of COX-2 by phycocyanin is much lower (180 nM) as compared to those of celecoxib (255 nM) and rofecoxib (401 nM), the well-known selective COX-2 inhibitors. In the human whole blood assay, phycocyanin very efficiently inhibited COX-2 with an IC50 value of 80 nM. Reduced phycocyanin and phycocyanobilin, the chromophore of phycocyanin are poor inhibitors of COX-2 without COX-2 selectivity. This suggests that apoprotein in phycocyanin plays a key role in the selective inhibition of COX-2. The present study points out that the hepatoprotective, anti-inflammatory, and anti-arthritic properties of phycocyanin reported in the literature may be due, in part, to its selective COX-2 inhibitory property, although its ability to efficiently scavenge free radicals and effectively inhibit lipid peroxidation may also be involved. Microporous polybenzimidazole of 250–500 μm spherical bead size from Celanese has been reacted with epichlorohydrin and sodium hydroxide and the resulting product with pendant epoxy groups has been reacted with various chelating ligands in order to augment the metal sorption capacity and selectivity of the resin. The chelating ligands used include ethylenediamine, diethylenetriamine, diethanolamine, dimethylglyoxime, L-cysteine, thiourea, dithiooxamide, glyoxal-bis-2-hydroxyanil, salicylaldehyde-ethylenediimine, and glyoxal-bis-2-mercaptoanil. The aminolysis of the pendant epoxy groups with the oligoamines has been performed in pyridine under reflux conditions, while the addition reactions with the other ligands which are alkali soluble have been carried out at room temperature in a mixture of dioxane and aqueous KOH using tetra-n-butylammonium iodide as the phase transfer catalyst. The products are found to possess high capacity and selectivity in metal sorption depending on the ligand attached.

A two dimensional correlation experiment for the measurement of short and long range homo- and hetero- nuclear residual dipolar couplings (RDCs) from the broad and featureless proton NMR spectra including C-13 satellites is proposed. The method employs a single natural abundant C-13 spin as a spy nucleus to probe all the coupled protons and permits the determination of RDCs of negligible strengths. The technique has been demonstrated for the study of organic chiral molecules aligned in chiral liquid crystal, where additional challenge is to unravel the overlapped spectrum of enantiomers. The significant advantage of the method is demonstrated in better chiral discrimination using homonuclear RDCs as additional parameters. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The in situ cryo-crystallization study of benzyl derivatives reveals that the molecular packing in these compounds is either through methylene (sp(3)) C-H center dot center dot center dot pi or aromatic (sp(2)) C-H center dot center dot center dot pi interactions depending on the level of acidity of the benzyl proton. These studies of low melting compounds bring out the subtle features of such weak interactions and point to the directional preferences depending on the nature (electron withdrawing, polarizability) of the neighbouring functional group.

The flocculation and filtration characteristics of typical Indian iron ore fines have been studied using starch as flocculant in the presence of an inorganic electrolyte, namely calcium chloride. The effect of various parameters such as pH, starch and calcium chloride concentrations and pulp density on the settling and filtration rates, turbidity of the supernatant and on residual starch and calcium ion concentrates has been investigated through a statistical design and analysis approach and subsequently optimised on a laboratory scale. The adsorption mechanisms of starch onto haematite have been elucidated through adsorption density measurements, infrared and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic techniques. The rheological property of the polymer solutions of relevance to flocculations has also been investigated. Further, the role of metal ion-starch interactions in the bulk solution, has been studied. In order to understand the nature of polymer adsorption at the double-layer, electrokinetic studies have been carried out with the iron ore mineral samples using starch and calcium chloride. Based on the above findings, selective floculaation tests on artificial mixtures of iron ore minerals have been carried out to determine the separation efficiencies from the view point of alumina and silica removal from haematite as well as the control of alumina: silica ratio in Indian iron ores.

Microporous polybenzimidazole (PBI) of 250–500 μm bead size has been epoxidized and subsequently reacted with l-cysteine in the presence of a phase-transfer catalyst at room temperature to obtain a sorbent having anchored l-cysteine, EPBI(Cyst). The sorption of Cu(II), Ni(II), Co(II), and Zn(II) in mildly acidic and ammoniacal solutions has been measured under comparable conditions on EPBI(Cyst) and Dowex 50W-X8(H+) resins. While the latter shows no appreciable difference in sorption of the four metals in acidic and ammoniacal media and has 40–60 % selectivity for copper(II) over the other three, EPBI(Cyst) shows a threefold increase in copper sorption and more than 90% copper selectivity over the other metals in ammoniacal media, compared to mildly acidic media. The copper binding constant and saturation capacity of EPBI(Cyst) in ammoniacal media decrease only slowly beyond pH 11.6 with the result that the resin shows significant sorption of Cu(II) even in strongly ammoniacal solutions. The sorbed copper is stripped with HCl relatively easily. The copper sorption kinetics on EPBI(Cyst) is unusually fast in ammoniacal media with more than 90 % of equilibrium sorption being attained in one minute.

A polymeric sorbent containing triphenylphosphinimine residues has been obtained from crosslinked chloromethylated polystyrene by azidation, using phase-transfer catalysis, followed by reaction with triphenylphosphine at room temperature. The sorbent exhibits 100 % sorption selectivity for Fe(III) in the presence of Cu(II), Fe(II), Ni(II), Co(II), Mn(II), and Zn(II) in aqueous media. In the absence of Fe(III), however, Fe(II) is selectively sorbed over the other metal ions, and in the absence of both Fe(II) and Fe(III), Cu(II) has the highest selectivity of sorption on the resin. The sorption of Fe(III) is sensitive to pH, being maximum at pH not, vert, similar 2 and falling sharply at both higher and lower pH values. The sorbed Fe(III) is easily stripped with dilute HCl and the resulting protonated resin is regenerated to its original sorption capacity by treatment with dilute NaOH at room temperature.
