Sr2SbMnO6 (SSM) powders were successfully synthesized at reasonably low temperatures via molten-salt synthesis (MSS) method using eutectic composition of 0.635 Li2SO4-0.365 Na2SO4 (flux). High-temperature cubic phase SSM was stabilized at room temperature by calcining the as-synthesized powders at 900 degrees C/10 h. The phase formation and morphology of these powders were characterized via X-ray powder diffraction and scanning electron microscopy, respectively. The SSM phase formation associated with similar to 60 nm sized crystallites was also confirmed by transmission electron microscopy. The activation energy associated with the particle growth was found to be 95 +/- 5 kJ mol(-1). The dielectric constant of the tetragonal phase of the ceramic (fabricated using this cubic phase powder) with and without the flux (sulphates) has been monitored as a function of frequency (100 Hz-1 MHz) at room temperature. Internal barrier layer capacitance (IBLC) model was invoked to rationalize the dielectric properties.

We present the results on the distribution and kinematics of HI gas with higher sensitivity and in one case of higher spectral resolution as well than reported earlier, of three irregular galaxies CGCG 097073, 097079 and 097087 (UGC 06697) in the cluster Abell 1367. These galaxies are known to exhibit long (50 - 75 kpc) tails of radio continuum and optical emission lines (H alpha) pointing away from the cluster centre and arcs of starformation on the opposite sides of the tails, These features as well as the HI properties, with two of the galaxies (CGCG 097073 and 097079) exhibiting sharper gradients in HI intensity on the side of the tails, are consistent with the HI gas being affected by the ram pressure of the intracluster medium. However the HI emission in all the three galaxies extends to much smaller distances than the radio-continuum and H alpha tails, and are possibly still bound to the parent galaxies. Approximately 20 - 30 per cent of the HI mass is seen to accumulate on the downstream side due to the effects of ram pressure.

Gene expression noise results in protein number distributions ranging from long-tailed to Gaussian. We show how long-tailed distributions arise from a stochastic model of the constituent chemical reactions and suggest that, in conjunction with cooperative switches, they lead to more sensitive selection of a subpopulation of cells with high protein number than is possible with Gaussian distributions. Single-cell-tracking experiments are presented to validate some of the assumptions of the stochastic simulations. We also examine the effect of DNA looping on the shape of protein distributions. We further show that when switches are incorporated in the regulation of a gene via a feedback loop, the distributions can become bimodal. This might explain the bimodal distribution of certain morphogens during early embryogenesis.

Contrary to the general assumption that photoreactions in crystals may not proceed with large molecular motions, a pedal-like motion prompted by electronic excitation is believed to be involved during the β-dimer formation from the crystals of the diamine double salt of trans-2,4-dichlorocinnamic acid and trans-1,2-diaminocyclohexane.

Mixed-species foraging associations may form to enhance feeding success or to avoid predators. We report the costs and consequences of an unusual foraging association between an endemic foliage gleaning tupaid (Nicobar treeshrew Tupaia nicobarica) and two species of birds; one an insectivorous commensal (greater racket-tailed drongo Dicrurus paradiseus) and the other a diurnal raptor and potential predator (Accipiter sp.). In an alliance driven, and perhaps engineered, by drongos, these species formed cohesive groups with predictable relationships. Treeshrew breeding pairs were found more frequently than solitary individuals with sparrowhawks and were more likely to tolerate sparrowhawks in the presence of drongos. Treeshrews maintained greater distances from sparrowhawks than drongos, and permitted the raptors to come closer when drongos were present. Treeshrew foraging rates declined in the presence of drongos; however, the latter may provide them predator avoidance benefits. The choice of the raptor to join the association is intriguing; particular environmental resource states may drive the evolution of such behavioural strategies. Although foraging benefits seem to be the primary driver of this association, predator avoidance also influences interactions, suggesting that strategies driving the formation of flocks may be complex and context dependent with varying benefits for different actors.

Ionic conductivity and other physico-chemical properties of a soft matter composite electrolyte comprising of a polymer-sodium salt complex and a non-ionic plastic crystal are discussed here. The electrolyte under discussion comprises of polyethyleneoxide (PEO)-sodium triflate (NaCF3SO3) and succinonitrile (SN). Addition of SN to PEO-NaCF3SO3 resulted in significant enhancement in ionic conductivity. At 50% SN concentration (with respect to weight of polymer), the polymer-plastic composite electrolyte room temperature (= 25 degrees C) ionic conductivity was similar to 1.1 x 10(-4) Omega(-1) cm(-1), approximately 45 times higher than PEO-NaCF3SO3. Observations from ac-impedance spectroscopy along with X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry and Fourier transform inrared spectroscopy strongly suggest the enhancement in the composite is ionicconductivity due to enhanced ion mobility via decrease in crystallinity of PEO. The free standing composite polymer-plastic electrolytes were more compliable than PEO-NaCF3SO3 thus exhibiting no detrimental effects of succinonitrile addition on the mechanical stability of PEO-NaCF3SO3. We propose that the exploratory PEO-NaCF3SO3-SN system.discussed here will eventually be developed as a prototype electrolyte.for sodium-sulfur batteries capable of operating at ambient and.sub-ambient conditions. We have investigated the near-critical behavior of the susceptibility of a ternary liquid mixture of 3-methylpyridine. water, and sodium bromide as a function of the salt concentration. The susceptibility was determined from light-scattering measurements performed at a scattering angle of 90 degrees in the one-phase region near the locus of lower consolute points. A sharp crossover from asymptotic Ising behavior to mean-field behavior has been observed at concentrations ranging from 8 to 16.5 mass% NaBr. The range of asymptotic Ising behavior shrinks with increasing salt concentration and vanishes at a NaBr concentration of about 17 mass%. where complete mean-field-like behavior of the susceptibility is observed. A simultaneous pronounced increase in the background scattering at concentrations above 15 mass%, as well as a dip in the critical locus at 17 mass % NaBr, suggests that this phenomenon can be interpreted as mean-field tricritical behavior associated with the formation of a microheterogeneous phase due to clustering of the molecules and ions. An analogy with tri critical behavior observed in polymer solutions as well as the possibility of a charge-density-wave phase is also discussed. In addition, we, have observed a third soap-like phase an the liquid-liquid interface in several binary and ternary liquid mixtures.

Molecular dynamics simulations are used to examine the changes in water density and hydration characteristics of NaCl solutions confined in slit-shaped graphitic pores. Using a structural signature, we define the hydration limit as the salt concentration at which a sharp drop in the hydration number is observed. At small pores (H = 8.0-10 angstrom), confined water does not possess bulk-like features and remains in a layered arrangement between two surfaces. Despite this high degree of confinement, ions are able to form a quasi-2D hydration shell between two surfaces. Our results indicate the strong propensity of ions to form the first hydration shell, even under extremely confined aqueous environments. The hydration of ions is seen to weakly perturb the oxygen density distributions between two surfaces. The hydration number of Na+ reduces to about 4.15 at a pore width of H = 0.8 nm, when compared with the bulk hydration number of 6.25. At larger pore widths, above H = 16 angstrom, where bulk-like water densities are observed in the central regions of the pore, the hydration number is above 6.

Making use of aerosol optical depths (AOD) derived from MODIS (onboard TERRA satellite) and winds from NCEP, and the fact that sea-salt optical depth over ocean is determined primarily by sea-surface wind speed, we examine the contribution of sea-salt to the composite aerosol optical depth ( AOD) over Arabian Sea ( AS), by developing empirical models for characterizing wind-speed dependence of sea-salt optical depth. We show that at high wind speeds, sea-salt contributes 81% to the coarse mode and 42% to the composite AOD in the southern AS. In contrast to this, over the northern AS, share of sea-salt to coarse mode and composite optical depth is only 35% and 16% respectively. Comparison of the sea-salt optical depth and coarse mode optical depth ( MODIS) showed excellent agreement. The sea-salt optical depth over AS at moderate to high wind speed is comparable to the anthropogenic AOD reported for this region during winter.

The crystal and molecular structure of the ammonium salt of deoxycytidylyl-(3'-5')-deoxyguanosine has been determined from 0.85 A resolution single crystal X-ray diffraction data. The crystals obtained by acetone diffusion technique at -20 degrees C, are orthorhombic, P212121, a = 12.880(2), b = 17444(2) and c = 27.642(2) A. The structure was solved by high resolution Patterson and Fourier methods and refined to R = 0.136. There are two d(CpG) molecules in the asymmetric unit forming a mini left handed Z-DNA helix. This is in contrast to the earlier reported forms of d(CpG) where the molecules form self base paired duplexes. There are two ammonium ions in the asymmetric unit. The major groove NH+4 ion interacts with N7 of guanines through water bridges besides making H-bonded interactions directly with the phosphate oxygen atoms. A second NH+4 ion is found in the minor groove interacting directly with the phosphate oxygen atoms. Symmetry related molecules pack in such a way that the cytosine base stacks on cytosine and guanine base on guanine. Our structure demonstrates that alternating d(CpG) sequences have the ability to adopt the left handed Z-DNA structure even at the dimer level i.e., in a sequence which is only two base pairs long.

The fluorescent probe dansyl cadaverine has been shown to bind strongly to mixed bile salt-phospholipid micelles containing unsaturation in the fatty acyl chains. Incorporation of cholesterol into the mixed micelles reduces the number of molecules of bound dansyl cadaverine without altering the binding affinity. These results suggest a tighter packing of the hydrocarbon matrix of the micelles in the presence of cholesterol.

C9H12N2Ot2P22-. 2K + .3H20 is orthorhombic, P2~2~2p with a = 18.977 (5), b - 22.597 (6), c = 8.995 (2) A, Z = 8. The structure was refined to R = 0.059 for 2587 observed reflexions. The two molecules of the asymmetric unit have very similar conformations with a 2'- endo sugar pucker and a folded pyrophosphate chain. They form a dimer, coordinated by the K + ions but without direct bridging between the base and the pyrophosphate within each individual molecule. One uracil base has the keto-enol and the other the diketo form. The extended structure shows alternating hydrophobic and hydrophilic regions.
