The photoquenching of EL2 in semi‐insulating gallium arsenide is seen to be a complex process, where at low temperatures the initial slow quenching is followed by a switch to fast quenching. A possible explanation involving lattice strain mediated cooperative structural relaxation arising out of transition to the metastable state is proposed.

The contents of fibroin H RNA as a function of development have been quantitated in the posterior silk glands of Bombyx mori larvae on different days of 4th and 5th instars. The fibroin RNA levels increased during the feeding stages of larvae and the RNA got completely degraded during the interim moult. The patterns of accumulation of fibroin RNA were similar in both the instars. Although there was considerable increase in the fibroin RNA content during the 5th larval instar, the relative abundance of fibroin RNA in the total RNA was fairly constant during the 4th and 5th instars. The increased content of fibroin RNA in 5th instar was the consequence of an overall increase in transcription accompanying the development progress, rather than specific increase only in fibroin transcription. The contents of fibroin protein in the 4th and 5th instars of development have also been quantitated making use of a sensitive radioimmune assay with a purified, antifibroin antibody. There were substantial differences between 4th and 5th instars in the absolute fibroin contents as well as the relative proportion of fibroin in the total proteins. These results implied that although the fibroin gene was transcribed at the same efficiency during the 4th and 5th instars, the translational efficiency was much lower during the 4th instar. The extent of polyadenylation of fibroin RNA was similar in both instars. However, there was a two-fold increase in the polysome association of fibroin RNA in the 5th instar. Over and above this, there was substantial increase during the 5th instar in the contents of those tRNAs. (e.g. Gly, Ala and Ser) which are abundantly represented in fibroin and therefore directly related to the expression of fibroin. The increased polysome association of fibroin mRNA and the adequate supply of cognate tRNAs in the 5th instar, together contributes to the translational regulation of fibroin in a developmental stage-specific manner. Based on these observations, we propose that translational regulation plays a major role in the development stage-specific synthesis of fibroin in Bombyx mori.

Existing models for dmax predict that, in the limit of μd → ∞, dmax increases with 3/4 power of μd. Further, at low values of interfacial tension, dmax becomes independent of σ even at moderate values of μd. However, experiments contradict both the predictions show that dmax dependence on μd is much weaker, and that, even at very low values of σ,dmax does not become independent of it. A model is proposed to explain these results. The model assumes that a drop circulates in a stirred vessel along with the bulk fluid and repeatedly passes through a deformation zone followed by a relaxation zone. In the deformation zone, the turbulent inertial stress tends to deform the drop, while the viscous stress generated in the drop and the interfacial stress resist deformation. The relaxation zone is characterized by absence of turbulent stress and hence the drop tends to relax back to undeformed state. It is shown that a circulating drop, starting with some initial deformation, either reaches a steady state or breaks in one or several cycles. dmax is defined as the maximum size of a drop which, starting with an undeformed initial state for the first cycle, passes through deformation zone infinite number of times without breaking. The model predictions reduce to that of Lagisetty. (1986) for moderate values of μd and σ. The model successfully predicts the reduced dependence of dmax on μd at high values of μd as well as the dependence of dmax on σ at low values of σ. The data available in literature on dmax could be predicted to a greater accuracy by the model in comparison with existing models and correlations.

This paper proposes a derivative-free two-stage extended Kalman filter (2-EKF) especially suited for state and parameter identification of mechanical oscillators under Gaussian white noise. Two sources of modeling uncertainties are considered: (1) errors in linearization, and (2) an inadequate system model. The state vector is presently composed of the original dynamical/parameter states plus the so-called bias states accounting for the unmodeled dynamics. An extended Kalman estimation concept is applied within a framework predicated on explicit and derivative-free local linearizations (DLL) of nonlinear drift terms in the governing stochastic differential equations (SDEs). The original and bias states are estimated by two separate filters; the bias filter improves the estimates of the original states. Measurements are artificially generated by corrupting the numerical solutions of the SDEs with noise through an implicit form of a higher-order linearization. Numerical illustrations are provided for a few single- and multidegree-of-freedom nonlinear oscillators, demonstrating the remarkable promise that 2-EKF holds over its more conventional EKF-based counterparts. We formulate a two-stage Iterative Wiener filtering (IWF) approach to speech enhancement, bettering the performance of constrained IWF, reported in literature. The codebook constrained IWF (CCIWF) has been shown to be effective in achieving convergence of IWF in the presence of both stationary and non-stationary noise. To this, we include a second stage of unconstrained IWF and show that the speech enhancement performance can be improved in terms of average segmental SNR (SSNR), Itakura-Saito (IS) distance and Linear Prediction Coefficients (LPC) parameter coincidence. We also explore the tradeoff between the number of CCIWF iterations and the second stage IWF iterations.
