Wheelchair is required for the mobility of the disabled people. It can be categorized into two categories: manual, powered wheelchair. This paper deals with series hybrid combination of manual and battery powered wheelchair. The control scheme used is simpler than other hybrid wheelchairs. It includes the sensor less control of the speed. Battery assisted wheelchair (BAW) has less number of components in its hardware. Effort made by rider is reduced considerably. The control scheme also includes the dead man's switch feature. Speed loop is provided for the smooth variation of the speed. The current limit is governed by peak current mode control.

Discharge periods of lead-acid batteries are significantly reduced at subzero centigrade temperatures. The reduction is more than what can he expected due to decreased rates of various processes caused by a lowering of temperature and occurs despite the fact that active materials are available for discharge. It is proposed that the major cause for this is the freezing of the electrolyte. The concentration of acid decreases during battery discharge with a consequent increase in the freezing temperature. A battery freezes when the discharge temperature falls below the freezing temperature. A mathematical model is developed for conditions where charge-transfer reaction is the rate-limiting step. and Tafel kinetics are applicable. It is argued that freezing begins from the midplanes of electrodes and proceeds toward the reservoir in-between. Ionic conduction stops when one of the electrodes freezes fully and the time taken to reach that point, namely the discharge period, is calculated. The predictions of the model compare well to observations made at low current density (C/5) and at -20 and -40 degrees C. At higher current densities, however, diffusional resistances become important and a more complicated moving boundary problem needs to be solved to predict the discharge periods. Sodium nitrate is isostructural with calcite and crystallizes in the space group DQd. It is one of these substances whose physical properties have been widely investigated. However, a perusal of literature shows that the agreement between the elastic constants obtained by various investigators is not good.

Experimental results for breakdown voltage of sodium vapour measured for the first time using coaxial cylindrical electrodes of fixed gap distance (5 mm) and pressure (corrected to2 0 "C) in the range2 1 to 652 Pa are reported, and are founfdo l ltoow Paschen's Law. The investigations also reveal that V th-Ie characteristics are pressure dependent; the current during the breakdown and the buoifl dc-uurpre nt after a breakdoiws nei ther positive or negative. in spite of the central cylinder being always maintained at a positive potential

E.S.R. investigations of γ-irradiated ferroelectric Sodium ammonium selenate, NaNH4SeO4•2H2O and its deuteriated analogue in powder and single crystal forms have led to a deeper understanding of the nature of the ferroelectric transition of 180 K. A number of paramagnetic species formed due to γ-irradiation have been identified on the basis of their g-factors and hyperfine features from 77Se. The radical SeO4 has been used as a microprobe in studying the phase transition.

Initiation and propagation processes in thermally initiated solid-state polymerization of sodiumvacrylate have been studied. The kinetics of initiation, followed with the electron spin resonancev technique, leads to an activation energy E of 28.8 kcal/mol, which is attributed to the formation of dimeric radicals. The activation energy of 16 f 1 kcaVmol obtained for the solid-state polymerization of sodium acrylate by chemical analysis and differential scanning calorimetry has been attributed to the propagation process.

A binary mixture of ammonium perchlorate-sodium nitrate in molar proportion undergoes partial fusion at 223°C and the transformation of the mixture to sodium perchlorate-ammonium nitrate occurs in the broad endothermic region. The mixture was heated and quenched at various temperatures in a differential thermal analysis assembly. Thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray diffraction, and infrared spectroscopic techniques were used to determine the composition of the quenched sample in order to explain the overall thermal phenomenon. Visual observations of the morphological changes that occur during the course of heating were made using a hot-stage microscope, 30–350°C.

Hexafluorodisilane has been prepared by the fluorination of hexachlorodisilane or hexabromodisilane by potassium fluoride in boiling acetonitrile, in yields approximating 45 and 60% respectively. Hexafluorodisilane has been characterised by infrared spectral data, vapour density measurements and analytical data. Both hexafluorodisilane and hexachlorodisilane are found to react with sulfur trioxide when heated to 400°C for 12 h. The products of reaction are silicon tetrafluoride, silica and sulfur dioxide with hexafluorodisilane while hexachlorodisilane in addition gives rise to hexachlorodisiloxane.

Interfacial area measurement has been carried out experimentally by measuring the bubble size and holdup for air-sodium chloride solution system. The size of the bubble is predominantly established by the air hold up. High speed photography technique for bubble size measurement and gamma ray attenuation method for holdup measurements are followed. The measured values are compared with the theoretically predicted values. Interracial area as a function of the liquid flow rate and also its distance from the nozzle of the ejector has been reported in this paper. The results obtained for this non-reactive system are also compared with those of air-water system.

The anomeric effect in S---C---S and O---C---S systems was studied by using closed-shell Hartree-Fock theory. A comparison of the STO-3G level with the 4–31G and 6–31G* levels was performed for the O---C---O system, and the STO-3G level found adequate for study of the anomeric effect. Optimization of bond lengths and angles was conducted at the STO-3G level and limited studies were made at the 4–31G level. The nature of the torsional potential curves is compared for the O---C---O, O---C---S, and S---C---S systems. The possible reasons for the decreased anomeric effect in sulfur systems are discussed.

A molecular inclusion complex has been obtained from the major acetylenic acid, santalbic acid (octadec-11-en-9-ynoic acid ortrans-11-octadecen-9-ynoic acid) of the seed oil ofSantalum album L. by a simple treatment of its sodium salt with dimethyl sulfate. Aqueous solutions (0.5–1%) of the complex produce good lather and have efficient cleansing (detergent) action on grease and dirt particles.

Low temperature fluorination technique is adopted for fluorination of the following sulphur compounds in freon-11 medium (1) Sulphur dioxide (2) Thionyl chloride (3) Sulphuryl chloride (4) Tetrasulphur tetra nitride and (5) Sulphur bromide. All the compounds undergo oxidative fluorination to give rise to sulphur-fluorine compounds except sulphuryl chloride which resists fluorination. Sulphuryl chloride thus behaves as a good solvent medium for fluorination of other reactive compounds like elemental sulphur. Details of the experimental procedures adopted and the identification of the products will be presented
