New dimensionally consistent modified solvate complex models are derived to correlate solubilities of solids in supercritical fluids both in the presence and absence of entrainers (cosolvents). These models are compared against the standard solvate complex models [J.Chrastil, J. Phys. Chem. 86 (1982) 3016-3021; J.C. Gonzalez, M.R.Vieytes, A.M. Botana, J.M. Vieites, L.M. Botana, J. Res. 27 (1988) 1551-1553] by correlating the solubilities of 13 binary and 12 ternary systems. Though the newly derived models are not significantly better than the standard models in predicting the solubilities, they are dimensionally consistent. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Surface activity of solution deposited (SD) amorphous films of As2S3 has been investigated. Silver and copper are readily deposited on such films from appropriate aqueous ionic solutions. The metals diffuse into the films upon irradiation with energetic photons. Structure and properties of SD films have been investigated using electron microscopy, optical spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. The amorphous films tend to crystallize upon metal diffusion. The stability of amorphous films, the deposition of metals on their active surfaces and the photo-induced diffusion may all be attributed to the presence or production of charged defects in amorphous chalcogenide films.

Photoacoustic spectroscopy has been employed to study the electronic spectra of a variety of solids. The systems studied include powders of intensely coloured dyes, amorphous chalcogenides and oxide gels besides polycrystalline samples of several oxide materials. Surface sensitivity of the technique has been examined by study of dye adsorption on oxide surfaces and determination of surface areas of active oxides. Acidic and basic sites on catalyst surfaces have also been estimated by this technique.

After briefly reviewing the theory and instrumentation, results from a variety of experiments carried out by the authors on the photoacoustic spectroscopy of solids and surfaces by employing an indigenous spectrometer are discussed in the light of the recent literature. Some of the important findings discussed are, phase angle spectroscopy, anomalous behaviour of monolayers, unusual frequency dependence in small cell volumes, spectra of a variety of solids including amorphous arsenic chalcogenides, photoacoustic detection of phase transitions and determination of surface areas and surface acidities of oxides. Recent developments such as piezoelectric photoacoustic spectroscopy, depth profiling and subsurface imaging are also presented.

Atomic layer deposition was used to obtain TiO2 thin films on Si (100) and fused quartz, using a novel metal organic precursor. The films were grown at 400 degrees C, varying the amount of oxygen used as the reactive gas. X-ray diffraction showed the films to be crystalline, with a mixture of anatase and rutile phases. To investigate their optical properties, ellipsometric measurements were made in the UV-Vis-NIR range (300-1700 nm). Spectral distribution of various optical constants like refractive index (n), absorption index (k), transmittance (T), reflectance (R), absorption (A) were calculated by employing Bruggemann's effective medium approximation (BEMA) and Maxwell-Garnet effective medium approximation, in conjunction with the Cauchy and Forouhi-Bloomer (FB) dispersion relations. A layered optical model has been proposed which gives the thickness, elemental and molecular composition, amorphicity and roughness (morphology) of the TiO2 film surface and and the film/substrate interface, as a function of oxygen flow rate The spectral distribution of the optical band gap (E-g(opt)), complex dielectric constants (epsilon' and epsilon''), and optical conductivity (sigma(opt)), has also been determined.

In this paper, an overview of some recent numerical simulations of stationary crack tip fields in elastic-plastic solids is presented. First, asymptotic analyses carried out within the framework of 2D plane strain or plane stress conditions in both pressure insensitive and pressure sensitive plastic solids are reviewed. This is followed by discussion of salient results obtained from recent computational studies. These pertain to 3D characteristics of elastic-plastic near-front fields under mixed mode loading, mechanics of fracture and simulation of near-tip shear banding process of amorphous alloys and influence of crack tip constraint on the structure of near-tip fields in ductile single crystals. These results serve to illustrate several important features associated with stress and strain distributions near the crack tip and provide the foundation for understanding the operative failure mechanisms. The paper concludes by highlighting some of the future prospects for this field of study.

A survey of amphibian mortality on roads was carried out in the Sharavathi river basin in the central Western Ghats. Road kills in three different land use areas: agricultural fields, water bodies and forests were recorded for four days along three 100m stretches in each type of area. One-hundred-and-forty-four individuals belonging to two orders, eight families, 11 genera and 13 species were recorded in the survey. Kills/km observed were: in forest 55, agricultural fields 38 and water bodies 27, for an overall average of 40 kills/km. Kill species compositions varied significantly between land use areas, but not overall kill rates.

There exist many investigations of ionic transport in a variety of glasses. These studies exhibit strong correlation between ionic conductivity and activation energy: Typically, it is found that higher conductivity is associated with lower activation energies and vice versa. Although there are explanations for this at a phenomenological level, there is no consistent physical picture to explain the correlation between conductivity and activation energy. We have carried out molecular dynamics simulation as a function of the size of the impurity atom or diffusant (both neutral and charged) in a host amorphous matrix. We find that there is a maximum in self-diffusivity as a function of the size of the impurity atom suggesting that there is an appropriate size for which the diffusivity is maximum. The activation energy is found to be the lowest for this size of the impurity. A similar maximum has been previously found in other condensed phases, such as confined fluids and dense liquids, and has its origin in the levitation effect. The implications of this result for understanding ionic conductivity in glasses are discussed. Our results suggest that there is a relation between microscopic structure of the amorphous solid, diffusivity or conductivity, and activation energy. The nature of this relationship is discussed in terms of the levitation parameter showing that diffusivity is maximum when the size of the neck or doorway radius is comparable with the size of the diffusant. Our computational results here are in excellent agreement with independent experimental results of Nascimento et al. [Braz. J. Phys. 35, 626 (2005)] that structural features of the glass are important in determining the ionic conductivity.

Bismuth vanadate (Bi2VO5.5, BVO) thin films have been deposited by a pulsed laser ablation technique on platinized silicon substrates. The surface morphology of the BVO thin films has been studied by atomic force microscopy (AFM). The optical properties of the BVO thin films were investigated using spectroscopic ellipsometric measurements in the 300–820 nm wavelength range. The refractive index (n), extinction coefficient (k) and thickness of the BVO thin films have been obtained by fitting the ellipsometric experimental data in a four-phase model (air/BVOrough/BVO/Pt). The values of the optical constants n and k that were determined through multilayer analysis at 600 nm were 2.31 and 0.056, respectively. For fitting the ellipsometric data and to interpret the optical constants, the unknown dielectric function of the BVO films was constructed using a Lorentz model. The roughness of the films was modeled in the Brugmann effective medium approximation and the results were compared with the AFM observations.

Nickel rich NiTi films were sputter deposited on p-doped Si left angle bracket1 0 0right-pointing angle bracket substrates maintained at 300 °C. The films were subsequently solution treated at 700 °C for 30 min followed by ageing at 400 and 500 °C for 5 h. The microstructure of the films was examined by TEM and these studies revealed that the NiTi films were mostly amorphous in the as-deposited condition. The subsequent solution treatment and ageing resulted in crystallization of the films with the film aged at 400 °C exhibiting nanocrystalline grains and three phases viz. B2 (austenite), R and Ni3Ti2 whereas the film aged at 500 °C shows micron sized grains and two phases viz. R and Ni3Ti2. Nanoindentation studies revealed that the nature of the load versus indentation depth response for the films aged at 400 and 500 °C was different. For the same load, the indenter penetrated to a much greater depth for the film aged at 400 °C as compared to the film aged at 500 °C. Also the ratio of the residual indentation depth (hf) to maximum indentation depth (hmax) is lower for the film aged at 400 °C as compared to the film aged at 500 °C. This was attributed to the occurrence of stress induced martensitic transformation of the B2 phase present in the film aged at 400 °C during indentation loading which results in a transformation strain in addition to the normal elastic and plastic strains and its subsequent recovery on unloading. The hardness and elastic modulus measured using the Oliver and Pharr analysis was also found to be lower for the film aged at 400 °C as compared to the film aged at 500 °C which was also primarily attributed to the same effect.

Supercritical processes are gaining importance in the last few years in the food, environmental and pharmaceutical product processing. The design of any supercritical process needs accurate experimental data on solubilities of solids in the supercritical fluids (SCFs). The empirical equations are quite successful in correlating the solubilities of solid compounds in SCF both in the presence and absence of cosolvents. In this work, existing solvate complex models are discussed and a new set of empirical equations is proposed. These equations correlate the solubilities of solids in supercritical carbon dioxide (both in the presence and absence of cosolvents) as a function of temperature, density of supercritical carbon dioxide and the mole fraction of cosolvent. The accuracy of the proposed models was evaluated by correlating 15 binary and 18 ternary systems. The proposed models provided the best overall correlations. (C) 2009 Elsevier BA/. In this paper the approach for automatic road extraction for an urban region using structural, spectral and geometric characteristics of roads has been presented. Roads have been extracted based on two levels: Pre-processing and road extraction methods. Initially, the image is pre-processed to improve the tolerance by reducing the clutter (that mostly represents the buildings, parking lots, vegetation regions and other open spaces). The road segments are then extracted using Texture Progressive Analysis (TPA) and Normalized cut algorithm. The TPA technique uses binary segmentation based on three levels of texture statistical evaluation to extract road segments where as, Normalizedcut method for road extraction is a graph based method that generates optimal partition of road segments. The performance evaluation (quality measures) for road extraction using TPA and normalized cut method is compared. Thus the experimental result show that normalized cut method is efficient in extracting road segments in urban region from high resolution satellite image.

Films of CuInSe2 were deposited onto glass substrates by a hot wall deposition method using bulk CuInSe2 as a source material. All the deposited CuInSe2 films were found to be polycrystalline in nature exhibiting the chalcopyrite structure with the crystallite orientation along (101),(112),(103),(211),(220),(312) and (400) directions. The photocurrent was found to increase with increase in film thickness and also with increase of light intensity. Photocurrent spectra show a peak related to the band-to-band transition. The spectral response of CuInSe2 thin films was studied by allowing the radiation to pass through a series of interference filters in the wavelength range 700-1200 rim. Films of higher thickness exhibited higher photosensitivity while low thickness films exhibited moderate photosensitivity. CuInSe2-based Solar cells with different types of buffer layers such as US, Cdse, CuInSe2 and CdSe0.7Te0.3 were fabricated. The current and voltage were measured using an optical power meter and an electrometer respectively. The fabricated solar cells were illuminated using 100 mW/cm(2) white light under AM1 conditions. There has been increasing interest on various properties and applications of electronically conducting polymers. Polyethylenedioxythiophene (PEDOT) is an interesting polymer of this type as it exhibits very high ionic conductivity. In the present study, PEDOT has been electrochemically deposited on stainless steel (SS) substrate for supercapacitor studies. PEDOT/SS electrodes prepared in 0.1M H2SO4 in presence of a surfactant, sodium dodecylsulphate (SDS), have been found to yield higher specific capacitance (SC) than the electrodes prepared from neutral aqueous electrolyte. The effects of concentration of H(2)SO4(,) concentration of SDS, potential of deposition, and nature of supporting electrolytes used for capacitor studies on SC of the PEDOT/SS electrodes have been studied. SC values as high as 250 F/g in 1M oxalic acid have been obtained during the initial stages of cycling. However, there is a rapid decrease in SC on repeated charge-discharge cycling. Spectroscopic data reflect structural changes in PEDOT on extended cycling. (C) 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
