This paper considers antenna selection (AS) at a receiver equipped with multiple antenna elements but only a single radio frequency chain for packet reception. As information about the channel state is acquired using training symbols (pilots), the receiver makes its AS decisions based on noisy channel estimates. Additional information that can be exploited for AS includes the time-correlation of the wireless channel and the results of the link-layer error checks upon receiving the data packets. In this scenario, the task of the receiver is to sequentially select (a) the pilot symbol allocation, i.e., how to distribute the available pilot symbols among the antenna elements, for channel estimation on each of the receive antennas; and (b) the antenna to be used for data packet reception. The goal is to maximize the expected throughput, based on the past history of allocation and selection decisions, and the corresponding noisy channel estimates and error check results. Since the channel state is only partially observed through the noisy pilots and the error checks, the joint problem of pilot allocation and AS is modeled as a partially observed Markov decision process (POMDP). The solution to the POMDP yields the policy that maximizes the long-term expected throughput. Using the Finite State Markov Chain (FSMC) model for the wireless channel, the performance of the POMDP solution is compared with that of other existing schemes, and it is illustrated through numerical evaluation that the POMDP solution significantly outperforms them.

Dynamic supramolecular systems involving a tetratopic palladium(II) acceptor and three different pyridine-and imidazole-based donors have been used for self-selection by a synergistic effect of morphological information and coordination ability of ligands through specific coordination interactions. Three different cages were first synthesized by two-component self-assembly of individual donor and acceptor. When all four components were allowed to interact in a reaction mixture, only one out of three cages was isolated. The preferential binding affinity towards a particular partner was also established by transforming a non-preferred cage into a preferred cage by interaction with the appropriate ligand. Computational studies further supported the fact that coordination interaction of imidazole moiety to Pd-II is enthalpically more preferred compared to pyridine, which drives the selection process. Analysis of crystal packing of both complexes indicated the presence of strong hydrogen bonds between nitrate and water molecules and also H-bonded 3D networks of water. Both complexes exhibit promising proton conductivity (10(-5) to ca. 10(-3) Scm(-1)) at ambient temperature under a relative humidity of circa 98% with low activation energy.

brusive Jet Machining (AJM) or Micro Blast Machining is a non-traditional machining process, wherein material removal is effected by the erosive action of a high velocity jet of a gas, carrying fine-grained abrasive particles, impacting the work surface. The AJM process differs from conventional sand blasting in that the abrasive is much finer and the process parameters and cutting action are carefully controlled. The process is particularly suitable to cut intricate shapes in hard and brittle materials which are sensitive to heat and have a tendency to chip easily. In other words, AJM can handle virtually any hard or brittle material. Already the process has found its ways Into dozens of applications; sometimes replacing conventional alternatives often doing jobs that could not be done in any other way. This paper reviews the current status of this non-conventional machining process and discusses the unique advantages and possible applications.

Composite coatings containing quasicrystalline (QC) phases in Al-Cu-Fe alloys were prepared by laser cladding using a mixture of the elemental powders. Two substrates, namely pure aluminum and an Al-Si alloy were used. The clad layers were remelted at different scanning velocities to alter the growth conditions of different phases. The process parameters were optimized to produce quasicrystalline phases. The evolution of the microstructure in the coating layer was characterized by detailed microstructural investigation. The results indicate presence of quasicrystals in the aluminum substrate. However, only approximant phase could be observed in the substrate of Al-Si alloys. It is shown that there is a significant transport of Si atoms from the substrate to the clad layer during the cladding and remelting process. The hardness profiles of coatings on aluminum substrate indicate a very high hardness. The coating on Al-Si alloy, on the other hand, is ductile and soft. The fracture toughness of the hard coating on aluminum was obtained by nano-indentation technique. The K1C value was found to be 1.33 MPa m1/2 which is typical of brittle materials.

The coordinated activity of protein tyrosine phosphatases (PTPs) is crucial for the initiation, modulation, and termination of diverse cellular processes. The catalytic activity of this protein depends on a nucleophilic cysteine at the active site that mediates the hydrolysis of the incoming phosphotyrosine substrate. While the role of conserved residues in the catalytic mechanism of PTPs has been extensively examined, the diversity in the mechanisms of substrate recognition and modulation of catalytic activity suggests that other, less conserved sequence and structural features could contribute to this process. Here we describe the crystal structures of Drosophila melanogaster PTP10D in the apo form as well as in a complex with a substrate peptide and an inhibitor. These studies reveal the role of aromatic ring stacking interactions at the boundary of the active site of PTPs in mediating substrate recruitment. We note that phenylalanine 76, of the so-called KNRY loop, is crucial for orienting the phosphotyrosine residue toward the nucleophilic cysteine. Mutation of phenylalanine 76 to leucine results in a 60-fold decrease in the catalytic efficiency of the enzyme. Fluorescence measurements with a competitive inhibitor, p-nitrocatechol sulfate, suggest that Phe76 also influences the formation of the enzyme-substrate intermediate. The structural and biochemical data for PTP10D thus highlight the role of relatively less conserved residues in PTP domains in both substrate recruitment and modulation of reaction kinetics.

Tropical tree species vary widely in their pattern of spatial dispersion. We focus on how seed predation may modify seed deposition patterns and affect the abundance and dispersion of adult trees in a tropical forest in India. Using plots across a range of seed densities, we examined whether seed predation levels by terrestrial rodents varied across six large-seeded, bird-dispersed tree species. Since inter-specific variation in density-dependent seed mortality may have downstream effects on recruitment and adult tree stages, we determined recruitment patterns close to and away from parent trees, along with adult tree abundance and dispersion patterns. Four species (Canarium resiniferum, Dysoxylum binectariferum, Horsfieldia kingii, and Prunus ceylanica) showed high predation levels (78.5-98.7%) and increased mortality with increasing seed density, while two species, Chisocheton cumingianus and Polyalthia simiarum, showed significantly lower seed predation levels and weak density-dependent mortality. The latter two species also had the highest recruitment near parent trees, with most abundant and aggregated adults. The four species that had high seed mortality had low recruitment under parent trees, were rare, and had more spaced adult tree dispersion. Biotic dispersal may be vital for species that suffer density-dependent mortality factors under parent trees. In tropical forests where large vertebrate seed dispersers but not seed predators are hunted, differences in seed vulnerability to rodent seed predation and density-dependent mortality can affect forest structure and composition.

Training for receive antenna selection (AS) differs from that for conventional multiple antenna systems because of the limited hardware usage inherent in AS. We analyze and optimize the performance of a novel energy-efficient training method tailored for receive AS. In it, the transmitter sends not only pilots that enable the selection process, but also an extra pilot that leads to accurate channel estimates for the selected antenna that actually receives data. For time-varying channels, we propose a novel antenna selection rule and prove that it minimizes the symbol error probability (SEP). We also derive closed-form expressions for the SEP of MPSK, and show that the considered training method is significantly more energy-efficient than the conventional AS training method.

An opportunistic, rate-adaptive system exploits multi-user diversity by selecting the best node, which has the highest channel power gain, and adapting the data rate to selected node's channel gain. Since channel knowledge is local to a node, we propose using a distributed, low-feedback timer backoff scheme to select the best node. It uses a mapping that maps the channel gain, or, in general, a real-valued metric, to a timer value. The mapping is such that timers of nodes with higher metrics expire earlier. Our goal is to maximize the system throughput when rate adaptation is discrete, as is the case in practice. To improve throughput, we use a pragmatic selection policy, in which even a node other than the best node can be selected. We derive several novel, insightful results about the optimal mapping and develop an algorithm to compute it. These results bring out the inter-relationship between the discrete rate adaptation rule, optimal mapping, and selection policy. We also extensively benchmark the performance of the optimal mapping with several timer and opportunistic multiple access schemes considered in the literature, and demonstrate that the developed scheme is effective in many regimes of interest.

Aptamers, and the selection process known as Systematic Evolution of Ligands by Exponential Enrichment (SELEX) used to generate them, were first described more than twenty years ago. Since then, there have been numerous modifications to the selection procedures. This review discusses the use of modified bases as a means of enhancing serum stability and producing effective therapeutic tools, as well as functionalising these nucleic acids to be used as potential diagnostic agents.

This paper describes the use of liaison to better integrate product model and assembly process model so as to enable sharing of design and assembly process information in a common integrated form and reason about them. Liaison can be viewed as a set, usually a pair, of features in proximity with which process information can be associated. A liaison is defined as a set of geometric entities on the parts being assembled and relations between these geometric entities. Liaisons have been defined for riveting, welding, bolt fastening, screw fastening, adhesive bonding (gluing) and blind fastening processes. The liaison captures process specific information through attributes associated with it. The attributes are associated with process details at varying levels of abstraction. A data structure for liaison has been developed to cluster the attributes of the liaison based on the level of abstraction. As information about the liaisons is not explicitly available in either the part model or the assembly model, algorithms have been developed for extracting liaisons from the assembly model. The use of liaison is proposed to enable both the construction of process model as the product model is fleshed out, as well as maintaining integrity of both product and process models as the inevitable changes happen to both design and the manufacturing environment during the product lifecycle. Results from aerospace and automotive domains have been provided to illustrate and validate the use of liaisons. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The effects of various processing conditions, like annealing, poling, mechanical rolling and their combinations, on the dielectric and ferroelectric properties of PVDF poly(vinylidene fluoride)] were systematically studied in this work. Further, the effect of processing sequence on the structure and properties was investigated. While all the processing conditions adopted here resulted in phase transformation of the alpha- to electroactive beta-polymorph in PVDF, the fraction of beta-phase developed was observed to be strongly contingent on the adopted process. The transformation of alpha- to electroactive beta-polymorph was determined by X-ray diffraction and FTIR. The neat PVDF showed only beta-phase, whereas mechanically rolled samples exhibited the highest ca. 85% beta-phase in PVDF. Both the permittivity and the loss tangent decreased in the samples which had undergone different processing conditions. The polarization-electric field (P-E) loops for all the samples were evaluated. Interestingly, the energy density, estimated from the electrical displacement-electric field (D-E) loops, was observed to be highest for the poled samples which were initially rolled. The results indicate that various processing conditions can influence the dielectric and the ferroelectric properties differently.

Growing demand for urban built spaces has resulted in unprecedented exponential rise in production and consumption of building materials in construction. Production of materials requires significant energy and contributes to pollution and green house gas (GHG) emissions. Efforts aimed at reducing energy consumption and pollution involved with the production of materials fundamentally requires their quantification. Embodied energy (EE) of building materials comprises the total energy expenditure involved in the material production including all upstream processes such as raw material extraction and transportation. The current paper deals with EE of a few common building materials consumed in bulk in Indian construction industry. These values have been assessed based on actual industrial survey data. Current studies on EE of building materials lack agreement primarily with regard to method of assessment and energy supply assumptions (whether expressed in terms of end use energy or primary energy). The current paper examines the suitability of two basic methods; process analysis and input-output method and identifies process analysis as appropriate for EE assessment in the Indian context. A comparison of EE values of building materials in terms of the two energy supply assumptions has also been carried out to investigate the associated discrepancy. The results revealed significant difference in EE of materials whose production involves significant electrical energy expenditure relative to thermal energy use. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. Following transmission, HIV-1 adapts in the new host by acquiring mutations that allow it to escape from the host immune response at multiple epitopes. It also reverts mutations associated with epitopes targeted in the transmitting host but not in the new host. Moreover, escape mutations are often associated with additional compensatory mutations that partially recover fitness costs. It is unclear whether recombination expedites this process of multi-locus adaptation. To elucidate the role of recombination, we constructed a detailed population dynamics model that integrates viral dynamics, host immune response at multiple epitopes through cytotoxic T lymphocytes, and viral evolution driven by mutation, recombination, and selection. Using this model, we compute the expected waiting time until the emergence of the strain that has gained escape and compensatory mutations against the new host's immune response, and reverted these mutations at epitopes no longer targeted. We find that depending on the underlying fitness landscape, shaped by both costs and benefits of mutations, adaptation proceeds via distinct dominant pathways with different effects of recombination, in particular distinguishing escape and reversion. When adaptation at a single epitope is involved, recombination can substantially accelerate immune escape but minimally affects reversion. When multiple epitopes are involved, recombination can accelerate or inhibit adaptation depending on the fitness landscape. Specifically, recombination tends to delay adaptation when a purely uphill fitness landscape is accessible at each epitope, and accelerate it when a fitness valley is associated with each epitope. Our study points to the importance of recombination in shaping the adaptation of HIV-1 following its transmission to new hosts, a process central to T cell-based vaccine strategies.
