Ultrafine powders of SrTiO3 are prepared at 100–150°C by the hydrothermal method, starting from TiO2·xH2O gel and Sr(OH)2 and H2O-isopropanol mixed solvent as the medium, The X-ray diffractograms of the powder show line broadening. The minimum crystallite size obtained ranges from 5 to 20nm with 20% H2O-80% C3H7OH as the reaction medium, as estimated from X-ray half-peak widths and TEM studies. The electron diffraction results indicate high concentration of lattice defects in these crystallites. The optical spectra of the particle suspensions in water show that the absorption around the band gap is considerably broadened, together with the appearance of maxima in the far ultraviolet. Aqueous suspensions of SrTiO3 powders, as such, do not produce H2 or O2 on UV irradiation. After coating with rhodium, H2 and O2 are evolved on illumination. However, the turn over number of O2 is lower than the stoichiometrically expected values from the corresponding values of H2. No correlation of the photocatalytic activity with surface area is observed. The activity of Rh-SrTiO3 slowly deteriorates with extended period of irradiation.

The often discussed role of surface hydroxylation of TiO2 particles as an essential characterestics for their photocatalytic activity can be verified by preparing TiO2 powders by hydrothermal method since hydroxylated surface layers will be better retained on these particles formed in superheated water. Thus, fine powders of TiO2 (rutile) with high degree of crystallinity are formed from titanium oxychloride in the mixed solvent of water and 2-propanol at 160–230°C and 20–120 atm. The anatase phase is produced from the same medium when sulfate ion impurity is present, with Image . TiO2 powders are washed free of anions and 2-propanol by ultrafiltration and are Pt mounted by a photochemical method. Aqueous suspensions of both forms of TiO2 neither as such nor after Pt-loading, do not produce H2 on band gap illumination whereas, H2 is generated in presence of hole scavengers such as EDTA, TEOA, sulfite or hypophosphite. The effects of hole scavenger concentration, Pt : TiO2 ratio, particulate suspension density and the nature of hole scavengers on H2 production are presented. Platinised rutile powders are equally active as anatase in sacrificial systems.

Ultrafine powders of extra pure Ti1−xSnxO2, where o < x < 1, prepared by the hydrothermal method are pale yellow in color. They show photocatalytic activity after platinization, in the visible light (420–550 nm) for H2-production from aqueous solutions containing sacrificial donors such as hypophosphite. The spectral sensitization is shown to be due to peroxotitanium species in the rutile-type structure. Peroxide ion, O22−, arises from the dimerization of O−, the hole centres, produced during the disproportionative decomposition of residual hydroxyls: OH− = O− + H. Higher OH contents in TixSnxO2 is due to the amphoteric chemistry of oxocompounds of tin.

Photocatalysis using semiconductor catalyst such as TiO2, in presence of UV light, is a promising technique for the inactivation of various microorganisms present in water. In the current study, the photocatalytic inactivation of Escherichia coli bacteria was studied with commercial Degussa Aeroxide TiO2 P25 (Aeroxide) and combustion synthesized TiO2 (CS TiO2) catalysts immobilized on glass slides in presence of UV irradiation. Thin films of the catalyst and polyelectrolytes, poly(allyl amine hydrochloride) and poly(styrene sulfonate sodium salt), were deposited on glass slides by layer by layer (LbL) deposition method and characterized by SEM and AFM imaging. The effect of various parameters, namely, catalyst concentration, surface area and number of bilayers, on inactivation was studied. Maximum inactivation of 8-log reduction in the viable count was observed with 1.227 mg/cm(2) of catalyst loaded slides. With this loading, complete inactivation was observed within 90 min and 75 min of irradiation, for Aeroxide and CS TiO2, respectively. Further increase in the catalyst concentration or increasing number of bilayers had no significant effect on inactivation. The effect of surface area on the inactivation was studied by increasing the number of slides and the inactivation was observed to increase with increasing surface area. It was also observed that the immobilized catalyst slides can be used for several cycles leading to an economic process. The study shows potential application of TiO2, for the inactivation of bacteria, in its fixed form by a simple immobilization technique.

The photocatalytic activity of combustion synthesized nanocrystalline CeAlO3 was determined for the degradation of four anionic and four cationic dyes. The perovskite oxide showed high-photocatalytic activity and a complete degradation of all the dyes was possible within 2 h. The photocatalytic activity of the compound was comparable with the activity of the commercial Degussa P-25 TiO2 catalyst. The degradation of dyes was found to follow first order kinetics and the first order degradation rate constants were determined.

Nanometre-sized powders of SrTiO3 were prepared at 70-100 degrees C by the wet-chemical method of gel to crystallite (G-C) conversion. The crystallite sizes obtained were in the range 5-13 nm, as estimated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) studies. The photocatalytic activities of these powders in the mineralization of phenol were evaluated in comparison with Degussa P25 (TiO2). The maximum photocatalytic activity was observed for powders annealed in the range 1100-1300 degrees C. The optical spectra of the particle suspensions in water showed broadened absorption around the band gap region, together with the appearance of an absorption maximum in the UV region. The effect of inorganic oxidizing species as electron scavengers on the rate of the photocatalytic degradation of phenol was studied. The influence of bulk and surface defects, which participate in the charge transfer process during photocatalysis, was investigated systematically.

Photocatalytic disassembly of tertiary amine-based poly(propyl ether imine) dendrimers, in the presence of either 9,10-anthraquinone or riboflavin tetraacetate and O-2(g), leads to di- and tripropanolamine monomers. An application is shown by solubilisation of a water-insoluble dye, Sudan I, in aq. dendrimer solution ('catch'), followed by its `release' upon disassembly of the dendrimer.

Stolzite polymorph of PbWO4 catalyst was prepared by the facile room temperature precipitation method. Structural parameters were refined by the Rietveld analysis using powder X-ray data. PbWO4 was crystallized in the scheelite-type tetragonal structure with space group I4(1)/a (No. 88). Field emission scanning electron microscopy revealed leaf like morphology. Photoluminescence spectra exhibit broad blue emission (425 nm) under the excitation of 356 nm. The photocatalytic degradation of Methylene blue, Rhodamine B and Methyl orange dyes were measured under visible illumination. The 100% dye degradation was observed for MB and RhB dyes within 60 and 105 min. The rate constant was found to be in the decreasing order of MB > RhB > MO which followed the 1st order kinetic mechanism. Therefore, PbWO4 can be a potential candidate for blue component in white LEDs and also acts as a catalyst for the treatment of toxic and non-biodegradable organic pollutants in water. The preparation of ZnO nanorod films decorated with cobalt-acetate (CoAc) electrocatalyst and its activity for photoelectrolysis of water have been demonstrated. The photochemically prepared CoAc catalyst is chemically and morphologically similar to the electrochemically prepared CoAc catalyst. The on-set potential of oxygen evolution reaction is lower on CoAc-ZnO photoanode in relation to bare ZnO photoanode. There is a three to four fold increase in photooxidation current of OER due to the presence of CoAc co-catalyst on ZnO. Thus, the photochemically prepared CoAc on ZnO is an alternative and efficient co-catalyst for photoelectrochemical oxygen evolution reaction. The enhancement in photocatalytic activity of ZnO by the CoAc catalyst photochemically deposited from acetate buffer solution is significantly greater than the cobalt-phosphate (CoPi) co-catalyst deposited from phosphate buffer solution. Herein, we report a facile and effective method to enhance the photocatalytic activity of bismuth oxybromide (BiOBr) semiconductor through the fabrication of heterojunction with Ag3PO4. The as synthesized Ag3PO4/BiOBr microspheres were characterized with transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS). The new Ag3PO4/BiOBr heterojunctions exhibited wide absorption in the visible-light region and compared to pure BiOBr and Ag3PO4 samples displayed exceptionally high photocatalytic activity for the degradation of typical organic pollutants such as Rhodamine B (RhB) and phenol. The optimal Ag/Bi weight ratio in Ag3PO4/BiOBr microsphere (AB7) was found to be 0.7. The enhanced photocatalytic activity was related to the efficient separation of electron-hole pairs derived from matching band potentials between BiOBr and Ag3PO4 which results into the generation of natural energy bias at heterojunction and subsequent transfer of photoinduced charge carriers. Moreover, the synthesized samples exhibited almost no loss of activity even after 6 recycling runs indicating their high photocatalytic stability. Considering the facile and environment friendly route for the synthesis of Ag3PO4/BiOBr hybrids with enhanced visible-light induced photocatalytic activity, it is possible to widely apply these hybrids in various fields such as waste water treatment. This study demonstrates the synthesis of TiO2 nanobelts using solution combustion derived TiO2 with enhanced photocatalytic activity for dye degradation and bacterial inactivation. Hydrothermal treatment of combustion synthesized TiO2 resulted in unique partially etched TiO2 nanobelts and Ag3PO4 was decorated using the co-precipitation method. The catalyst particles were characterized using X-ray diffraction analysis, BET surface area analysis, diffuse reflectance and electron microscopy. The photocatalytic properties of the composites of Ag3PO4 with pristine combustion synthesized TiO2 and commercial TiO2 under sunlight were compared. Therefore the studies conducted proved that the novel Ag3PO4/unique combustion synthesis derived TiO2 nanobelt composites exhibited extended light absorption, better charge transfer mechanism and higher generation of hydroxyl and hole radicals. These properties resulted in enhanced photodegradation of dyes and bacteria when compared to the commercial TiO2 nanocomposite. These findings have important implications in designing new photocatalysts for water purification.

MgO:Fe3+ (0.1-5 mol%) nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized via eco-friendly, inexpensive and simple low temperature solution combustion route using Aloe vera gel as fuel. The final products were characterized by SEM, TEM and HRTEM. PXRD data and Rietveld analysis revealed the formation of cubic system. The influence of Fe3+ ion concentration on the structure morphology, UV absorption, PL emission and photocatalytic activity of MgO:Fe3+ NPs were investigated. The yellow emission with CIE chromaticity coordinates (0.44, 0.52) and average correlated color temperature value was found to be 3540 K which corresponds to warm light of NPs. The control of Fe3+. on MgO matrix influences the photocatalytic decolorization of methylene blue (MB) under UV light. The enhanced photocatalytic activity of MgO:Fe3+ (4 mol%) was attributed to dopant concentration, effective crystallite size, textural properties, decreased band gap and capability for reducing the electron hole pair recombination. Further, the trends of inhibitory effect in the presence of different radical scavengers were explored. These findings open up new avenues for the exploration of Fe-doped MgO in eco-friendly water applications and in the process of display devices. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The photocatalytic and thermal degradations of poly(methyl methacrylate), poly(butyl acrylate), and their copolymers of different compositions were studied. The photocatalytic degradation was investigated in o-dichlorobenzene in the presence of two different catalysts, namely, Degussa P-25 and combustion synthesized nanotitania (CSN-TiO2). The samples were analyzed by using gel permeation chromatography (GPC) to obtain the molecular weight distributions (MWDs) as a function of reaction time. Experimental data indicated that the photodegradation of these polymers occurs by both random and chain end scission. A continuous distribution kinetic model was used to determine the degradation rate coefficients by fitting the experimental data with the model. Both the random and specific rate coefficients of the copolymers decreased with increasing percentage of butyl acrylate (BA). Thermal degradation of the copolymers was investigated by thermo-gravimetry. The normalized weight loss profiles for the copolymers showed that the thermal stability of the copolymers increased with mole percentage of BA in the copolymer (PMMABA). The Czawa method was used to determine the activation energies at different conversions. At low acrylate content in the copolymer, the activation energy depends on conversion, indicating multiple degradation mechanisms. At high acrylate content in the copolymer, the activation energy is independent of conversion, indicating degradation by a one-step mechanism.

The work studies the extent of asymmetric flow in water models of continuous casting molds of two different configurations. In the molds where fluid is discharged through multiple holes at the bottom, the flow pattern in the lower portion depends on the size of the lower two recirculating domains. If they reach the mold bottom, the flow pattern in the lower portion is symmetrical about the central plane; otherwise, it is asymmetrical. On the other hand, in the molds where the fluid is discharged through the entire mold cross section, the flow pattern is always asymmetrical if the aspect ratio is 1:6.25 or more. The fluid jet swirls while emerging through the nozzle. The interaction of the swirling Jets with the wide sidewalls of the mold gives rise to asymmetrical flow inside the mold. In the molds with lower aspect ratios, where the jets do not touch the wide side walls, the flow pattern is symmetrical about the central plane.
