Dicobalt(II) complexes [{(B)Co-11)(2)(mu-dtdp)(2)] (1-3) of 3,3'-dithiodipropionic acid (dtdp) and phenanthroline bases (B), viz. 1,10-phenanthroline (phen in 1), dipyrido[3,2-d:2',3'-f]quinoxaline (dpq in 2) and dipyrido13,2-a:2',3'-clphenazine (dppz in 3), have been prepared, characterized and their photo-induced anaerobic DNA cleavage activity studied. The elemental analysis and mass spectral data suggest binuclear formulation of the complexes. The redox inactive complexes have magnetically non-interacting dicobalt(II) core showing magnetic moment of similar to 3.9 p per cobalt(II) center. The complexes show good binding propensity to calf thymus DNA giving K-b values within 4.3 x 10(5)-4.0 x 10(6) M-1. Thermal melting and viscosity data predict DNA groove binding and/or partial intercalative nature of the complexes. The complexes show significant anaerobic DNA cleavage activity in green light under argon atmosphere possibly involving radical species generated from the disulfide moiety in a type-I pathway. The DNA cleavage reaction under aerobic medium in green light is found to involve hydroxyl radical species. The dppz complex 3 exhibits significant photocytotoxicity in HeLa cervical cancer cells with an IC50 value of 2.31 mu M in UV-A light of 365 nm, while it is essentially non-toxic in dark giving an IC50 value of >200 mu M. A significant reduction of the dark toxicity of the organic dppz base (IC50 = 8.3 mu M in dark) is observed on binding to the cobalt(II) center while essentially retaining its photocytotoxicity in UV-A light (IC50 = 0.4 mu M). The crystal structures of two ternary metal nucleotide complexes of cobalt, [Co(en)2(H2O)2]-[Co(5?-IMP)2(H2O)4]Cl2·4H2O (1) and [Co(en)2(H2O)2][Co(5?-GMP)2(H2O)4]Cl2·4H2O (2), have been analysed by X-ray diffraction (en = ethylenediamine, 5?-IMP = inosine 5?-monophosphate, and 5?-GMP = guanosine 5?-monophosphate). Both complexes crystallize in the orthorhombic space group C2221 with a= 8.725(1), b= 25.891(5), c= 21.212(5)Å, Z= 4 for (1) and a= 8.733(2), b= 26.169(4), c= 21.288(4)Å, Z= 4 for (2). The structure of (1) was solved by the heavy-atom method, while that of (2) was deduced from (1). The structures were refined to R values of 0.09 and 0.10 for 1 546 and 1 572 reflections for (1) and (2) respectively. The two structures are isomorphous. A novel feature is that the chelate ligand en and the nucleotide are not co-ordinated to the same metal ion. One of the metal ions lying on the two-fold a axis is octahedrally co-ordinated by two chelating en molecules and two water oxygens, while the other on the two-fold b axis is octahedrally co-ordinated by two N(7) atoms of symmetry-related nucleotides in a cis position and four water oxygens. The conformations of the nucleotides are C(2?)-endo, anti, and gauchegauche. In both (1) and (2) the charge-neutralising chloride ions are disordered in the vacant space between the molecules. These structures bear similarities to the mode of nucleotide co-ordination to PtII complexes of 6-oxopurine nucleotides, which are the proposed models for intrastrand cross-linking in DNA by a metal complex.

Research on structure and magnetic properties of polynuclear metal complexes to understand the structural and chemical factors governing the electronic exchange coupling mediated by multi-atom bridging ligands is of growing interest. Hydrothermal treatment of Ni(NO3)(2)center dot 6H(2)O with N-(4-carboxyphenyl)iminodiacetic acid N-4(H(3)CPIDA)] at 150 degrees C yielded a 3D coordination polymer of general formula Ni-3{N-4( CPIDA)}(2)(H2O)(3)]center dot 6H(2)O (1). An analogous network of general formula Co-3{N-3(CPIDA)}(2)(H2O)(3)]center dot 3H(2)O (2) was synthesized using N-(3-carboxyphenyl) iminodiacetic acid N-3(H(3)CPIDA)] in combination with Co(NO3)(2)center dot 6H(2)O under identical reaction condition. Both the complexes contain trinuclear secondary building unit, and crystallized in monoclinic system with space groups C2/c (1) and P2(1)/c (2), respectively. Variable temperature magnetic characterization of these complexes in the temperature range of 2-300 K indicated the presence of overall ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic behavior for 1 and 2, respectively. Density functional theory calculations (B3LYP functional) were performed for further insight on the trinuclear units to provide a qualitative theoretical interpretation on the overall magnetic behavior of the complexes 1 and 2. Three compounds have been found to be stable in the pseudobinary system Na2O---(α)Al2O3 between 825 and 1400 K; two nonstoichiometric phases, β-alumina and β″-alumina, and NaAlO2. The homogeneity of β-alumina ranges from 9.5 to 11 mol% Na2O, while that of β″-alumina from 13.3 to 15.9 mol% Na2O at 1173 K. The activity of Na2O in the two-phase fields has been determined by a solid-state potentiometric technique. Since both β- and β″-alumina are fast sodium ion conductors, biphasic solid electrolyte tubes were used in these electrochemical measurements. The open circuit emf of the following cells were measured from 790 to 980 K: [GRAPHICS] The partial molar Gibbs' energy of Na2O relative to gamma-Na2O in the two-phase regions can be represented as: DELTA-GBAR(Na2O)(alpha- + beta-alumina) = -270,900 + 24.03 T, DELTA-GBAR(Na2O)(beta- + beta"-alumina) = -232,700 + 56.19 T, and DELTA-GBAR(Na2O)(beta"-alumina + NaAlO2) = -13,100 - 4.51 T J mol-1. Similar galvanic cells using a Au-Na alloy and a mixture of Co + CoAl(2+2x)O4+3x + (alpha)Al2O3 as electrodes were used at 1400 K. Thermodynamic data obtained in these studies are used to evaluate phase relations and partial pressure of sodium in the Na2O-(alpha) Al2O3 system as a function of oxygen partial pressure, composition and temperature.

The 1 : 2 electrolytic and three-electron paramagnetic complexes show a visible band near 550 nm in DMF-Tris-HCl buffer. The complexes 1-3 show emission spectral bands at 355, 421 and 454 nm, respectively, when excited at 287, 368 and 335 nm. The quantum yield values for 1-3 in DMF-H2O (2 : 1 v/v) are 0.025, 0.060 and 0.28, respectively. The complexes are redox active in DMF-0.1 M TBAP. The Co(III)-Co(II) and Co(II)-Co(I) couples appear as quasi-reversible cyclic voltammetric responses near 0.2 and -0.7 V vs. SCE, respectively. Complexes 2 and 3 are avid binders to calf thymus DNA giving K-b value of similar to 10(6) M-1. The complexes show chemical nuclease activity. Complexes 2 and 3 exhibit oxidative cleavage of pUC19 DNA in UV-A and visible light. The DNA photocleavage reaction of 3 at 365 nm shows formation of singlet oxygen and hydroxyl radical species, while only hydroxyl radical formation is evidenced in visible light. Complexes 2 and 3 show non-specific photo-induced bovine serum albumin protein cleavage activity at 365 nm. The an-tpy and py-tpy complexes exhibit significant photocytotoxicity in HeLa cervical cancer cells on exposure to visible light giving IC50 values of 24.2 and 7.6 mu M, respectively. Live cell imaging study shows accumulation of the complexes in the cytosol of HeLa cancer cells.

A hydrothermal reaction of Mn(OAc)(2)center dot 4H(2)O, Co(OAc)(2)center dot 4H(2)O and 1,2,4 benzenetricarboxylic acid at 220 degrees C for 24 h gives rise to a mixed metal MOF compound, CoMn2(C6H3(COO)(3))(2)], I. The structure is formed by the connectivity between octahedral CoO6 and trigonal prism MnO6 units connected through their vertices forming a Kagome layer, which are pillared by the trimellitate. Magnetic susceptibility studies on the MOF compound indicate a canted anti-ferromagnetic behavior, due to the large antisymmetric DM interaction between the M2+ ions (M = Mn, Co). Thermal decomposition studies indicate that the MOF compound forms a tetragonal mixed-metal spinel phase, CoMn2O4, with particle sizes in the nano regime at 400 degrees C. The particle size of the CoMn2O4 can be controlled by varying the decomposition temperature of the parent MOF compound. Magnetic studies of the CoMn2O4 compound suggests that the coercivity and the ferrimagnetic ordering temperatures are dependent on the particle size.

EHT calculations on heterotrinuclear cobalt(III) complexes of the type [Cu{(OH)(2)Co(L(4))}(2)](4+) where L(4) denotes (en)(2) or (NH3)(4), en = ethylenediamine and their component species have been carried out. The results regarding bonding and structure for the trinuclear complexes are compared with those for the monomer components such as [Co(en)(2)(OH)(2)](+), [Co(NH3)(4)(OH)(2)](+) and [Cu(OH)(4)](2-) are discussed.

Electrochemical precipitation of cobalt(II) hydroxide from nitrate solutions containing organic molecules, such as glucose, fructose, lactose, glycerol, and citric acid, yields a new modification of cobalt (II) hydroxide (a = 3.09 +/- 0.03 Angstrom, c = 23.34 +/- 0.36 Angstrom) that is isostructural with cu-nickel hydroxide; precipitation in the absence of organic additives gives the stable, brucite-like, beta-CO (OH)(2). The synthesis and thermal analysis studies of several hydroxobridged homo and hetero trinuclear cobalt(III) complexes are reported. The complexes are of the type [M(H2O)(x) {(OH)(2)Co(en)(2)}(2)](SO4)(2). nH(2)O and [M(H2O)(x){(OH)(2)Co(NH3)(4)}(2)] (SO4)(2). nH(2)O where en denotes ethylenediamine and M =Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II) with x=0 for Cu(II), and 2 for other metal ions, and n =3, 4 or 5. The TG and DTA studies of these compounds show that one or more intermediate compounds are formed in each case before the metal oxides are produced.

Ceria-supported Au catalyst has been synthesized by the solution combustion method for the first time and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Au is dispersed as Au as well as Au3+ states on CeO2 surface of 20-30 nm crystallites. On heating the as-prepared 1% Au/CeO2 in air, the concentration of Au3- ions on CeO2 increases at the expense of Au. Catalytic activities for CO and hydrocarbon oxidation and NO reduction over the as-prepared and the heat-treated 1% Au/CeO2 have been carried out using a temperature-programmed reaction technique in a packed bed tubular reactor. The results are compared with nano-sized Au metal particles dispersed on alpha-Al2O3 substrate prepared by the same method. All the reactions over heat-treated Au/CeO2 occur at lower temperature in comparison with the as-prepared Au/CeO2 and Au/Al2O3. The rate of NO + CO reaction over as-prepared and heat-treated 1% Au/CeO2 are 28.3 and 54.0 mumol g(-1) s(-1) at 250 and 300 degreesC respeceively. Activation energy (E,) values are 106 and 90 kJ mol(-1) for CO + O-2 reaction respectively over as-prepared and heat-treated 1% Au/CeO2 respectively.

We present a comparative study of the spin states and electronic properties of La1-xSrxCoO3 and La2-xSrxLi0.5Co0.5O4 using X-ray absorption near-edge structure spectroscopy at both the O-K and Co-L-2.3 thresholds. In the La2-xSrxLi0.5Co0.5O4 system the CoO6 octahedra are isolated, the holes induced by Sr doping are trapped in the isolated Co(IV)O-6 octahedra, and a low-spin state is found for the Co ions, which does not change upon Sr doping. In the La1-xSrxCoO3 system, the interconnected CoO6 octahedra, with a 180degrees Co-O-Co bond angle, give rise to a transition from low-spin to intermediate-spin state with a ferromagnetic alignment of the Co spins. The double-exchange, ferromagnetic coupling between Co ions mediated by the 180degrees bond angle is responsible for suppressing the low spin-state. We find that the branching ratio of spectral intensities at the L-2 and L-3 thresholds in the Co-L-2.3 X-ray absorption spectra is sensitive to the spin state of the Co ions allowing its direct spectroscopic determination. We present the first results of an observational programme undertaken to map the fine structure line emission of singly ionized carbon ([ CII] 157 : 7409 mum) over extended regions using a Fabry Perot spectrometer newly installed at the focal plane of a 100 cm balloon- borne far- infrared telescope. This new combination of instruments has a velocity resolution of similar to 200 km s(-1) and an angular resolution of 1.'5. During the first flight, an area of 30' x 15' in Orion A was mapped. These observations extend over a larger area than previous observations, the map is fully sampled and the spectral scanning method used enables reliable estimation of the continuum emission at frequencies adjacent to the [ CII] line. The total [ CII] line luminosity, calculated by considering up to 20% of the maximum line intensity is 0.04% of the luminosity of the far- infrared continuum. We have compared the [ CII] intensity distribution with the velocity- integrated intensity distributions of (CO)-C-13(1- 0), CI(1- 0) and CO( 3- 2) from the literature. Comparison of the [ CII], [ CI] and the radio continuum intensity distributions indicates that the largescale [ CII] emission originates mainly from the neutral gas, except at the position of M 43, where no [ CI] emission corresponding to the [ CII] emission is seen. Substantial part of the [ CII] emission from here originates from the ionized gas. The observed line intensities and ratios have been analyzed using the PDR models by Kaufman et al. ( 1999) to derive the incident UV flux and volume density at a few selected positions. The models reproduce the observations reasonably well at most positions excepting the [ CII] peak ( which coincides with the position of theta(1) Ori C). Possible reason for the failure could be the simplifying assumption of a homogeneous plane parallel slab in place of a more complicated geometry.

The synthesis, characterization, and reactivity of a chromium(0) complex bearing an amine-borane moiety (eta(6)-C(6)H(5)CH(2)NMe(2)center dot BH(3))Cr(CO)(3) (2) is reported. Photolysis of complex 2 results in the elimination of a CO ligand followed by the formation of an intramolecular sigma-borane complex (eta(1)-(eta(6)- C(6)H(5)CH(2)NMe(2)center dot BH(2)-H))Cr(CO)(2) (3). This species was characterized in solution by NMR spectroscopy. Reaction of complex 2 with photochemically generated (OC)(5)Cr(THF) affords a novel homobimetallic sigma-borane complex (OC)(3)Cr(eta(6)-C(6)H(5)CH(2)NMe(2)center dot BH(2)-H-Cr(CO)(5)) (4), wherein one of the BH moieties is bound to the chromium center in an eta(1)-fashion. The sigma-borane complex 4 was isolated in moderate to good yield (72%). The BH(3) fragment in the complexes 3 and 4 are highly dynamic involving exchange of the BH hydrogen bound to the metal with the terminal BH hydrogen atoms. The dynamics has been studied using variable-temperature NMR spectroscopy. Complexes 2 and 4 have been characterized by X-ray crystallography.

The present work is aimed at studying the influence of electrolyte chemistry on the voltage-time (V-T) response characteristics, phase structure, surface morphology, film growth rate and corrosion properties of titania films fabricated by micro arc oxidation (MAO) on Cp Ti. The titania films were developed with a sodium phosphate based reference electrolyte comprising the additives such as sodium carbonate (Na2CO3), sodium nitrite (NaNO2) and urea (CO(NH2)(2)). The phase composition, surface morphology, elemental composition and thickness of the films were assessed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) techniques. The corrosion characteristics of the fabricated films were studied under Kokubo simulated body fluid (SBF) condition by potentiodynamic polarization, long term potential and linear polarization resistance (LPR) measurements and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) methods. In addition, the corrosion characteristics of the grown films were analyzed by EIS curve fitting and equivalent circuit modeling. Salt spray test (SST) as per ASTM B 117 standard was also conducted to verify the corrosion resistance of the grown films. The XRD results showed that the titania films were composed of both anatase and rutile phases at different proportions. Besides, the films grown in carbonate and nitrite containing electrolyte systems showed an enhanced growth of their rutile phase in the 1 0 1] direction which could be attributed to the modifications introduced in the growth process by the abundant oxygen available during the process. The SEM-EDX and elemental mapping results showed that the respective electrolyte borne elements were incorporated and distributed uniformly in all the films. Among all the grown films under study, the film developed in carbonate containing electrolyte system exhibited considerably improved corrosion resistance due to suitable modifications in its structural and morphological characteristics. The rate of anatase to rutile phase transformation and the rutile growth direction were strongly influenced by the abundant oxidizing species available during the film growth process. Sequential transformation in a family of metal-organic framework compounds has been investigated employing both a solid-state as well as a solution mediated route. The compounds, cobalt oxy-bis(benzoate) and manganese oxybis(benzoate) having a two-dimensional structure, were reacted with bipyridine forming cobalt oxy-bis(benzoate)-4,4'-bipyridine and manganese oxy-bis(benzoate)-4,4'-bipyridine, respectively. The bipyridine containing compounds appear to form sequentially through stable intermediates. For the cobalt system, the transformation from a two-dimensional compound, Co(H2O)(2)(OBA)] (OBA = 4,4'-oxy-bis(benzoate)), I, to two different three-dimensional compounds, Co(bpy)(OBA)]center dot bpy, II, (bpy = 4,4'-bipyridine) and Co(bpy)(0.5)(OBA)], III, and reversibility between II and III have been investigated. In the manganese system, transformation from a two-dimensional compound, Mn(H2O)(2)(OBA)], Ia, to two different three-dimensional compounds, Mn (bpy)(OBA)]center dot bpy, Ha and Ha to Mn(bpy)(0.5)(OBA)], Ilia, has been investigated. It has also been possible to identify intermediate products during these transformation reactions. The possible pathways for the formation of the compounds were postulated.
