A new design for the solid-state cell incorporating a buffer electrode for high-temperature thermodynamic measurements is presented. The function of the buffer electrode, placed between the reference and working electrodes, is to absorb the electrochemical flux of the mobile species through the solid electrolyte caused by trace electronic conductivity. The buffer electrode prevents polarization of the measuring electrode and ensures accurate data. The application of this novel design and its advantages are demonstrated by measurement of the standard Gibbs energies of formation of Nd6Ir2O13 (low-temperature form) and Nd2Ir2O7 in the temperature range from 975 to 1450 K. Yttria-stabilized zirconia is used as the solid electrolyte and pure oxygen gas at a pressure of 0.1 MPa as the reference electrode. For the design of appropriate working electrodes, phase relations in the ternary system NdIrO were investigated at 1350 K. The two ternary oxides, Nd6Ir2O13 and Nd2Ir2O7, compositions of which fall on the join Nd2O3IrO2, were found to coexist with pure metal Ir. Therefore, two working electrodes were prepared consisting of mixtures of Ir+Nd2O3+Nd6Ir2O13 and Ir+Nd6Ir2O13+ Nd2Ir2O7. These mixtures unambiguously define unique oxygen chemical potentials under isothermal and isobaric conditions. The standard Gibbs energies of formation (ΔG°f (ox)) of the compounds from their component binary oxides Nd2O3 and IrO2, obtained from the emf of the cells, can be represented by the equations:View the MathML source View the MathML source Based on the thermodynamic information, chemical potential diagrams for the system NdIrO are developed.

In this paper, we report a novel piezoelectric ZnO nanogenerator on flexible metal alloy substrate (Phynox alloy) for energy harvesting and sensing applications. The vertically aligned ZnO nanowires are sandwiched between Au electrodes. The aligned growth of ZnO nanowires have been successfully synthesized on Au coated metal alloy substrate by hydrothermal method at low temperature (95 +/- 1 degrees C). The as-synthesized vertically aligned ZnO nanowires were characterized using FE-SEM. Further, PMMA is spin coated over the aligned ZnO nanowires for the purpose of their long term stability. The fabricated nanogenerator is of size 30mm x 6mm. From energy harvesting point of view, the response of the nanogenerator due to finger tip impacts ranges from 0.9 V to 1.4V. Also for sensing application, the maximum output voltage response of the nanogenerator is found to be 2.86V due to stainless steel (SS) ball impact and 0.92 V due to plastic ball impact.

Ionic Polymer Metal Composites (IPMCs) are a class of Electro-Active Polymers (EAPs) consisting of a base polymer (usually Nafion), sandwiched between thin films of electrodes and an electrolyte. Apart from fuel cell like proton exchange process in Nafion, these IPMCs can act both as an actuator and a sensor. Typically, IPMCs have been known for their applications in fuel cell technology and in artificial muscles for robots. However, more recently, sensing properties of IPMC have opened up possibilities of mechanical energy harvesting. In this paper, we consider a bi-layer stack of IPMC membranes where fluid flow induced cyclic oscillation allows collection of electronic charge across a pair of functionalized electrode on the surface of IPMC layers/stacks. IPMCs work well in hydrated environment; more specifically, in presence of an electrolyte, and therefore, have great potential in underwater applications like hydrodynamic energy harvesting. Hydrodynamic forces produce bending deformation, which can induce transport of cations via polymer chains of the base polymer of Nafion or PTFE. In our experimental set-up, the deformation is induced into the array of IPMC membranes immersed in electrolyte by water waves caused by a plunger connected to a stepper motor. The frequency and amplitude of the water waves is controlled by the stepper motor through a micro-controller. The generated electric power is measured across a resistive load. Few orders of magnitude increase in the harvested power density is observed. Analytical modeling approach used for power and efficiency calculations are discussed. The observed electro-mechanical performance promises a host of underwater energy harvesting applications.

A high-performance supercapacitor electrode based on unique 1D Co-Ni/Co3O4-NiO core/shell nano-heterostructures is designed and fabricated. The nano-heterostructures exhibit high specific capacitance (2013 F g(-1) at 2.5 A g(-1)), high energy and power density (23Wh kg(-1) and 5.5kW kg(-1), at the discharge current density of 20.8 A g(-1)), good capacitance retention and long cyclicality. The remarkable electrochemical property of the large surface area nano-heterostructures is demonstrated based on the effective nano-architectural design of the electrode with the coexistence of the two highly redox active materials at the surface supported by highly conducting metal alloy channel at the core for faster charge transport. An in situ study of stress evolution and mechanical behavior of germanium as a lithium-ion battery electrode material is presented. Thin films of germanium are cycled in a half-cell configuration with lithium metal foil as counter/reference electrode, with 1M LiPF6 in ethylene carbonate, diethyl carbonate, dimethyl carbonate solution (1:1:1, wt%) as electrolyte. Real-time stress evolution in the germanium thin-film electrodes during electrochemical lithiation/delithiation is measured by monitoring the substrate curvature using the multi-beam optical sensing method. Upon lithiation a-Ge undergoes extensive plastic deformation, with a peak compressive stress reaching as high as -0.76 +/- 0.05 GPa (mean +/- standard deviation). The compressive stress decreases with lithium concentration reaching a value of approximately -0.3 GPa at the end of lithiation. Upon delithiation the stress quickly became tensile and follows a trend that mirrors the behavior on compressive side; the average peak tensile stress of the lithiated Ge samples was approximately 0.83 GPa. The peak tensile stress data along with the SEM analysis was used to estimate a lower bound fracture resistance of lithiated Ge, which is approximately 5.3 J/m(2). It was also observed that the lithiated Ge is rate sensitive, i.e., stress depends on how fast or slow the charging is carried out. (C) The Author(s) 2015. Published by ECS. A low Schottky barrier height (SBH) at source/drain contact is essential for achieving high drive current in atomic layer MoS(2-)channel-based field effect transistors. Approaches such as choosing metals with appropriate work functions and chemical doping are employed previously to improve the carrier injection from the contact electrodes to the channel and to mitigate the SBH between the MoS2 and metal. Recent experiments demonstrate significant SBH reduction when graphene layer is inserted between metal slab (Ti and Ni) and MoS2. However, the physical or chemical origin of this phenomenon is not yet clearly understood. In this work, density functional theory simulations are performed, employing pseudopotentials with very high basis sets to get insights of the charge transfer between metal and monolayer MoS2 through the inserted graphene layer. Our atomistic simulations on 16 different interfaces involving five different metals (Ti, Ag, Ru, Au, and Pt) reveal that (i) such a decrease in SBH is not consistent among various metals, rather an increase in SBH is observed in case of Au and Pt; (ii) unlike MoS2-metal interface, the projected dispersion of MoS2 remains preserved in any MoS2-graphene- metal system with shift in the bands on the energy axis. (iii) A proper choice of metal (e.g., Ru) may exhibit ohmic nature in a graphene-inserted MoS2-metal contact. These understandings would provide a direction in developing high-performance transistors involving heteroatomic layers as contact electrodes. (c) 2016 AIP Publishing LLC.

The electron spin resonance absorption in the synthetic metal polyaniline (PANI) doped with PTSA and its blend with poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA) is investigated in the temperature range between 4.2 and 300 K. The observed line shape follows Dyson's theory for a thick metallic plate with slowly diffusing magnetic dipoles. At low temperatures the line shape become symmetric and Lorentzian when the sample dimensions are small in comparison with the skin depth. The temperature dependence of electron spin relaxation time is discussed. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

We investigate the evolution of the electronic structure across the insulator-metal transition in NiS2-xSex with changing composition, but in the absence of any structural or magnetic changes. A comparison of the inverse photoemission spectra with band-structure calculations establishes the importance of correlation effects in these systems. Systematic changes in the spectral distribution establish the persistence of the upper Hubbard band well into the metallic regime, with the insulator-to-metal transition being driven by a transfer of spectral weight from the Hubbard band to states close to the Fermi energy.

We report the direct observation of electrochemical potential and local transport field variations near scatterers like grain boundaries, triple points, and voids in thin platinum films studied by scanning tunneling potentiometry. The field is highest at a void, followed by a triple point and a grain boundary. The local transport field near a void can even be four orders of magnitude higher than the macroscopic field, indicating that the void is the most likely place for an electromigration induced failure. The field build up for a particular type of scatterer depends on the grain connectivity. We estimate an average grain boundary reflection coefficient for the film from the temperature dependence of its resistivity.

Magnetic atoms at surfaces are a rich model system for solid-state magnetic bits exhibiting either classical(1,2) or quantum(3,4) behaviour. Individual atoms, however, are difficult to arrange in regular patterns(1-5). Moreover, their magnetic properties are dominated by interaction with the substrate, which, as in the case of Kondo systems, often leads to a decrease or quench of their local magnetic moment(6,7). Here, we show that the supramolecular assembly of Fe and 1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid molecules on a Cu surface results in ordered arrays of high-spin mononuclear Fe centres on a 1.5nm square grid. Lateral coordination with the molecular ligands yields unsaturated yet stable coordination bonds, which enable chemical modification of the electronic and magnetic properties of the Fe atoms independently from the substrate. The easy magnetization direction of the Fe centres can be switched by oxygen adsorption, thus opening a way to control the magnetic anisotropy in supramolecular layers akin to that used in metallic thin films.

The effect of Surface lipopolysaccharides (LPS) on the electrophoretic softness and fixed charge density in the ion-penetrable layer of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans cells grown in presence of copper or arsenic ions have been discussed, The electrophoretic mobility data were analyzed using the soft-particle electrophoresis theory. Cell surface potentials of all the strains based on soft-particle theory were lower than those estimated using the conventional Smoluchowski theory, Exposure to metal ions increased the Surface electrophoretic softness with decrease in the fixed charge density. Effect of cell surface lipopolysaccharides on the model parameters are investigated and discussed.

A new water-soluble, salen [salen = bis(salicylidene) ethylenediamine]-based ligand, 3 was developed. Two of the metal complexes of this ligand, i.e., 3a, [Mn(III)] and 3b, [Ni(II)], in the presence of cooxidant magnesium monoperoxyphthalate (MMPP) cleaved plasmid DNA pTZ19R efficiently and rapidly at a concentration similar to 1 mu M. In contrast, under comparable conditions, other metal complexes 3c, [Cu(II)] or 3d, [Cr(III)] could not induce any significant DNA nicking. The findings with Ni(II) complex suggest that the DNA cleavage processes can be modulated by the disposition of charges around the ligand.

A new heterocycle, namely 2-(furyl)-3-(furfuralimino)-1,2-dihydroquinazolin-4(3H)-one (ffdq) was formed by the ondensation of 2-aminobenzoylhydrazide with furfural and characterized by physico-chemical, spectroscopic, and single crystal X-ray diffraction studies. A series of complexes of ffdq have been synthesized and characterized by physico-chemical, spectroscopic, and thermal studies. According to the i.r. and 1H-n.m.r. spectra ffdq behaves as a bidentate ligand coordinating through quinazoline oxygen and azomethine nitrogen. The FAB-mass spectrum of the Cd(II) complex indicates the monomeric nature of this complex. The X-band e.p.r. spectrum of the Cu(II) complex and thermal stabilities of the Co(II) and Ni(II) complexes are discussed.

A comparative investigation of charge transport properties is presented, for polymeric [poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS)], single-wall carbon nanotube (SWNT) and inorganic (indium tin oxide, ITO), transparent conducting electrodes. The polymeric and nanotube systems show hopping transport at low temperatures, in contrast with the disordered-metal transport in ITO. The low temperature magnetotransport (up to 11 T) and high electric-field transport (up to 500 V/cm) indicate the significant role of nanoscopic scale disorder for charge transport in polymer and nanotube based systems. The results show that characteristic length scales like localization length correlates with the nanomorphology in these systems. Further, the high frequency conductivity measurements (up to 30 MHz) in PEDOT:PSS and SWNT follow the extended pair approximation model [σ(ω)=σ(0)[1+(ω/ω0)s].
