2,4-Dinitrophenol and paranitrophenol are two major soil pollutants which are known to be metabolized by different soil microbes. Relative phytotoxicities of these parent compounds and their metabolic transformation products to the growth of cucumber seedlings were assessed. It was evident that such microbial transformations widely occurring in the soil are effective detoxification reactions and are beneficial for the plants.

For the problem of speaker adaptation in speech recognition, the performance depends on the availability of adaptation data. In this paper, we have compared several existing speaker adaptation methods, viz. maximum likelihood linear regression (MLLR), eigenvoice (EV), eigenspace-based MLLR (EMLLR), segmental eigenvoice (SEV) and hierarchical eigenvoice (HEV) based methods. We also develop a new method by modifying the existing HEV method for achieving further performance improvement in a limited available data scenario. In the sense of availability of adaptation data, the new modified HEV (MHEV) method is shown to perform better than all the existing methods throughout the range of operation except the case of MLLR at the availability of more adaptation data.

In this study, we have identified the possible genetic factors responsible for fowl-adaptation of Salmonella enterica serovar Gallinarum (S. Gallinarum). By comparing the genes related to Salmonella pathogenicity islands (SPI) of S. Gallinarum with those of Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis (S. Enteritidis) we have identified twenty-four positively selected genes. Our results suggest that the genes encoding the structural components of SPI-2 encoded type three secretion apparatus (TTSS) and the effector proteins that are secreted via SPI-1 encoded TTSS have evolved under positive selection pressure in these serovars. We propose that these positively selected genes play important roles in conferring different host-specificities to S. Gallinarum and S. Enteritidis.

A perturbation treatment was developed for the comparative study of the abstraction of hydrogen from methane by formaldehyde and thioformaldehyde in their nπ* and ππ* states. Both in-plane and perpendicularplane reactions are considered. Results are qualitative but reveal clearly the prominent distinguishing features of these two photochemical processes in agreement with the experimental observations.

A cDNA clone for the Ya subunit of glutathione transferase from rat liver was constructed in E.coli. The clone hybridized to Ya and Yc subunit messenger RNAs. On the basis of experiments involving cell-free translation and hybridization to the cloned probe, it was shown that prototype inducers of cytochrome P-450 such as phenobarbitone and 3-methylcholanthrene as well as inhibitors such as CoCl2 and 3-amino-l,2,4-triazole enhanced the glutathione transferase (Ya+Yc) messenger RNA contents in rat liver. A comparative study with the induction of cytochrome P-450 (b+e) by phenobarbitone revealed that the drug manifested a striking increase in the nuclear pre-messenger RNAs for the cytochrome at 12 hr, but did not significantly affect the same in the case of glutathione transferase (Ya+Yc). 3-Amino-l, 2,4-tnazole and CoCl- blocked the phenobarbitone mediated increase in cytochrome P-450 (b+e) nuclear pre-messenger RNAs. These compounds did not significantly affect the glutathione transferase (Ya+Yc) nuclear pre-messenger RNA levels. The polysomal, poly (A)- containing messenger RNAs for cytochrome P-450 (b+e) increased by 12–15 fold after phenobarbitone administration, reached a maximum around 16hr and then decreased sharply. In comparison, the increase in the case of glutathione transferase (Ya+Yc) mesenger RNAs was sluggish and steady and a value of 3–4 fold was reached around 24 hr. Run-off transcription rates for cytochrome P-450 (b+e) increased by nearly 15 fold in 4 hr after phenobarbitone administration, whereas the increase for glutathione transferase (Ya+Yc) was only 2.0 fold. At 12 hr after the drug administration, the glutathione transferase (Ya+Yc) transcription rates were near normal. Administration of 3-amino-l,2,4-triazole and CoCl2 blocked the phenobarbitone-mediated increase in the transcription of cytochrome P-450 (b+e) messenger RNAs. These compounds at best had only marginal effects on the transcription of glutathione transferase (Ya+Yc) messenger RNAs. The half-life of cytochrome P-450 (b+e) messenger RNA was estimated to be 3–4 hr, whereas that for glutathione transferase (Ya+Yc) was found to be 8-9 hr. Administration of phenobarbitone enhanced the half-life of glutathione transferase (Ya+Yc) messenger RNA by nearly two fold. It is suggested that while transcription activation may play a primary role in the induction of cytochrome P-450 (b+e), the induction of glutathione transferase (Ya+Yc) may essentially involve stabilization of the messenger RNAs.

The decentralized power is characterised by generation of power nearer to the demand centers, focusing mainly on meeting local energy needs. A decentralized power system can function either in the presence of grid, where it can feed the surplus power generated to the grid, or as an independent/stand-alone isolated system exclusively meeting the local demands of remote locations. Further, decentralized power is also classified on the basis of type of energy resources used-non-renewable and renewable. These classifications along with a plethora of technological alternatives have made the whole prioritization process of decentralized power quite complicated for decision making. There is abundant literature, which has discussed various approaches that have been used to support decision making under such complex situations. We envisage that summarizing such literature and coming out with a review paper would greatly help the policy/decision makers and researchers in arriving at effective solutions. With such a felt need 102 articles were reviewed and features of several technological alternatives available for decentralized power, the studies on modeling and analysis of economic, environmental and technological asibilities of both grid-connected (GC) and stand-alone (SA) systems as decentralized power options are presented. Successive administrations of allylisopropylacetamide, a potent porphyrinogenic drug, increase liver weight, microsomal protein and phospholipid contents. There is an increase in the rate of microsomal protein synthesis in vivo and in vitro. The drug decreases microsomal ribonuclease activity and increases NADPH–cytochrome c reductase activity. Phenobarbital, which has been reported to exhibit all these changes mentioned, is a weaker inducer of δ-aminolaevulinate synthetase and increases the rate of haem synthesis only after a considerable time-lag in fed female rats, when compared with the effects observed with allylisopropylacetamide. Again, phenobarbital does not share the property of allylisopropylacetamide in causing an initial decrease in cytochrome P-450 content. Haematin does not counteract most of the biochemical effects caused by allylisopropylacetamide, although it is quite effective in the case of phenobarbital. Haematin does not inhibit the uptake of [2-14C]allylisopropylacetamide by any of the liver subcellular fractions.

The operational life and reliability of I.C. engines are limited to a certain extent by the break down of the engine components due to wear. It is advantageous to know the condition of an engine and its components without disassembling for detailed measurements. This paper describes the possibility of employing chemical analysis of the used crank case oil to predict the wear of engine components. It is concluded that the acidity and carbon contents of the crank case oil play a significant role in assessing the wear of copper-lead bearings used for the big end of the connecting rod.

The comparative role of luteinizing hormone (LH) in maintaining pregnancy and histamine-induced decidualization in the rat was studied with the help of a new system, wherein the above two states could be brought about simultaneously in the same animal, but in different uterine horns. Specific and well-characterized LH antiserum, administered daily, both during the pre-trauma (days 1-4) and post-trauma (days 5-8) periods, resulted in the termination of pregnancy and inhibition of decidualization. This antiserum effect could be reversed by suitable steroid therapy. Results suggest that the antiserum blockade of ovarian steroidogenesis continued even after cessation of its treatment. Early pregnancy and decidualization seem directly comparable in that both are dependent upon LH to stimulate the ovarian synthesis of much-needed progesterone and estrogen.

Highly purified fluorescent labelled anti-bicuculline antibodies were used to mark bicuculline binding sites in cerebral cortex of monkey brain. Specific binding of bicuculline could be demonstrated in the synaptosomal fraction, when bicuculline was added both Image and Image . Addition of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) to the bicucullinised membrane led to a decrease in fluorescence indicating same receptor loci and establishing GABA-bicuculline antagonism at a molecular level.

By using the same current-time (I-t) curves, electrochemical kinetic parameters are determined by two methods, (a) using the ratio of current at a given potential to the diffusion-controlled limiting current and (b) curve fitting method, for the reduction of Cu(II)–CyDTA complex. The analysis by the method (a) shows that the rate determining step involves only one electron although the overall reduction of the complex involves two electrons suggesting thereby the stepwise reduction of the complex. The nature of I-t curves suggests the adsorption of intermediate species at the electrode surface. Under these circumstances more reliable kinetic parameters can be obtained by the method (a) compared to that of (b). Similar observations are found in the case of reduction of Cu(II)–EDTA complex.

VP6, the intermediate capsid protein of the virion, specifies subgroup specificity of rotavirus, It is also the most conserved, both at nucleotide and amino acid levels, among group A rotaviruses and is the target of choice for rotavirus detection, In this study we report the sequence of the subgroup I (SGI)-specific VP6 from the serotype G2 strain IS2 isolated from a child suffering from acute diarrhoea in Bangalore ana its comparison with the published VP6 sequences. Interestingly, IS2 gene 6 shared highest homology with that from bovine UK strain and the protein contained substitutions by lysine at amino acid positions 97 and 134, In contrast, the amino acids Met and Glu/Asp at these respective positions are highly conserved in all the other group A rotaviruses sequenced so far, These observations have obvious implications for the evolution of serotype G2 and G2-like strains circulating in India, The SGI VP6, of a human rotavirus, possessing epitopes that are conformationally similar to those found in the native protein in the virion, was successfully expressed in E. coli and purified for the first time by single-step affinity chromatography.
