One of the most important factors that affect the pointing of precision payloads and devices in space platforms is the vibration generated due to static and dynamic unbalanced forces of rotary equipments placed in the neighborhood of payload. Generally, such disturbances are of low amplitude, less than 1 kHz, and are termed as ‘micro-vibrations’. Due to low damping in the space structure, these vibrations have long decay time and they degrade the performance of payload. This paper addresses the design, modeling and analysis of a low frequency space frame platform for passive and active attenuation of micro-vibrations. This flexible platform has been designed to act as a mount for devices like reaction wheels, and consists of four folded continuous beams arranged in three dimensions. Frequency and response analysis have been carried out by varying the number of folds, and thickness of vertical beam. Results show that lower frequencies can be achieved by increasing the number of folds and by decreasing the thickness of the blade. In addition, active vibration control is studied by incorporating piezoelectric actuators and sensors in the dynamic model. It is shown using simulation that a control strategy using optimal control is effective for vibration suppression under a wide variety of loading conditions.

This paper presents a physical explanation of the phenomenon of low frequency oscillations experienced in power systems. A brief account of the present practice of providing fixed gain power system stabilizers (PSS) is followed by a summary of some of the recent design proposals for adaptive PSS. A novel PSS based on the effort of cancelling the negative damping torque produced by the automatic voltage regulator (AVR) is presented along with some recent studies on a multimachine system using a frequency identification technique.

A sample of 96 compact flat-spectrum extragalactic sources, spread evenly over all galactic latitudes, has been studied at 327 MHz for variability over a time interval of about 15 yr. The variability shows a dependence on galactic latitude being less both at low and high latitudes and peaking around absolute value of b approximately 15-degrees. The latitude dependence is surprisingly similar in both the galactic centre and anticentre directions. Assuming various single and multi-component distributions for the ionized, irregular interstellar plasma, we have tried to generate the observed dependence using a semi-qualitative treatment of refractive interstellar scintillations. We find that it is difficult to fit our data with any single or double component cylindrical distribution. Our data suggests that the observed variability could be influenced by the spiral structure of our Galaxy.

We use the HΙ scale height data along with the HΙ rotation curve as constraints to probe the shape and density profile of the dark matter halos of M31 (Andromeda) and the superthin, low surface brightness (LSB) galaxy UGC 07321. We model the galaxy as a two component system of gravitationally-coupled stars and gas subjected to the force field of a dark matter halo. For M31, we get a flattened halo which is required to match the outer galactic HΙ scale height data, with our best-fit axis ratio (0.4) lying at the most oblate end of the distributions obtained from cosmological simulations. For UGC 07321, our best-fit halo core radius is only slightly larger than the stellar disc scale length, indicating that the halo is important even at small radii in this LSB galaxy. The high value of the gas velocity dispersion required to match the scale height data can explain the low star-formation rate of this galaxy.

Reaction wheel assemblies (RWAs) are momentum exchange devices used in fine pointing control of spacecrafts. Even though the spinning rotor of the reaction wheel is precisely balanced to minimize emitted vibration due to static and dynamic imbalances, precision instrument payloads placed in the neighborhood can always be severely impacted by residual vibration forces emitted by reaction wheel assemblies. The reduction of the vibration level at sensitive payloads can be achieved by placing the RWA on appropriate mountings. A low frequency flexible space platform consisting of folded continuous beams has been designed to serve as a mount for isolating a disturbance source in precision payloads equipped spacecrafts. Analytical and experimental investigations have been carried out to test the usefulness of the low frequency flexible platform as a vibration isolator for RWAs. Measurements and tests have been conducted at varying wheel speeds, to quantify and characterize the amount of isolation obtained from the reaction wheel generated vibration. These tests are further extended to other variants of similar design in order to bring out the best isolation for given disturbance loads. Both time and frequency domain analysis of test data show that the flexible beam platform as a mount for reaction wheels is quite effective and can be used in spacecrafts for passive vibration control. Low-frequency sounds are advantageous for long-range acoustic signal transmission, but for small animals they constitute a challenge for signal detection and localization. The efficient detection of sound in insects is enhanced by mechanical resonance either in the tracheal or tympanal system before subsequent neuronal amplification. Making small structures resonant at low sound frequencies poses challenges for insects and has not been adequately studied. Similarly, detecting the direction of long-wavelength sound using interaural signal amplitude and/or phase differences is difficult for small animals. Pseudophylline bushcrickets predominantly call at high, often ultrasonic frequencies, but a few paleotropical species use lower frequencies. We investigated the mechanical frequency tuning of the tympana of one such species, Onomarchus uninotatus, a large bushcricket that produces a narrow bandwidth call at an unusually low carrier frequency of 3.2. kHz. Onomarchus uninotatus, like most bushcrickets, has two large tympanal membranes on each fore-tibia. We found that both these membranes vibrate like hinged flaps anchored at the dorsal wall and do not show higher modes of vibration in the frequency range investigated (1.5-20. kHz). The anterior tympanal membrane acts as a low-pass filter, attenuating sounds at frequencies above 3.5. kHz, in contrast to the high-pass filter characteristic of other bushcricket tympana. Responses to higher frequencies are partitioned to the posterior tympanal membrane, which shows maximal sensitivity at several broad frequency ranges, peaking at 3.1, 7.4 and 14.4. kHz. This partitioning between the two tympanal membranes constitutes an unusual feature of peripheral auditory processing in insects. The complex tracheal shape of O. uninotatus also deviates from the known tube or horn shapes associated with simple band-pass or high-pass amplification of tracheal input to the tympana. Interestingly, while the anterior tympanal membrane shows directional sensitivity at conspecific call frequencies, the posterior tympanal membrane is not directional at conspecific frequencies and instead shows directionality at higher frequencies.

Motivated by observations of the mean state of tropical precipitable water (PW), a moist, first baroclinic mode, shallow-water system on an equatorial beta-plane with a background saturation profile that depends on latitude and longitude is studied. In the presence of a latitudinal moisture gradient, linear analysis of the non-rotating problem reveals large-scale, symmetric, eastward and westward propagating unstable modes. The introduction of a zonal moisture gradient breaks the east-west symmetry of the unstable modes. The effects of rotation are then included by numerically solving the resulting eigenvalue problem on an equatorial beta-plane. With a purely meridional moisture gradient, the system supports large-scale, low-frequency, eastward and westward moving neutral modes. Some of the similarities, and some of the discrepancies of these modes with intraseasonal tropical waves are pointed out. Finally, a zonal moisture gradient in the presence of rotation renders some of the aforementioned neutral modes unstable. In particular, according to observations of large-scale, low-frequency tropical variability, it is seen that regions where the background saturation profile increases (decreases) to the east favour eastward (westward) moving moist modes.

Towards ultrafast optoelectronic applications of single and a few layer reduced graphene oxide (RGO), we study time domain terahertz spectroscopy and optical pump induced changes in terahertz conductivity of self-supported RGO membrane in the spectral window of 0.5-3.5 THz. The real and imaginary parts of conductivity spectra clearly reveal low frequency resonances, attributed to the energy gaps due to the van Hove singularities in the density of states flanking the Dirac points arising due to the relative rotation of the graphene layers. Further, optical pump induced terahertz conductivity is positive, pointing to the dominance of intraband scattering processes. The relaxation dynamics of the photo-excited carriers consists of three cooling pathways: the faster (similar to 450 fs) one due to optical phonon emission followed by disorder mediated large momentum and large energy acoustic phonon emission with a time constant of a few ps (called the super-collision mechanism) and a very large time (similar to 100 ps) arising from the deep trap states. The frequency dependence of the dynamic conductivity at different delay times is analyzed in term of Drude-Smith model. (C) 2014 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

Quasigeostrophic turbulence on a beta-plane with a finite deformation radius is studied numerically, with particular emphasis on frequency and combined wavenumber-frequency domain analyses. Under suitable conditions, simulations with small-scale random forcing and large-scale drag exhibit a spontaneous formation of multiple zonal jets. The first hint of wave-like features is seen in the distribution of kinetic energy as a function of frequency; specifically, for progressively larger deformation scales, there are systematic departures in the form of isolated peaks (at progressively higher frequencies) from a power-law scaling. Concomitantly, there is an inverse flux of kinetic energy in frequency space which extends to lower frequencies for smaller deformation scales. The identification of these peaks as Rossby waves is made possible by examining the energy spectrum in frequency-zonal wavenumber and frequency-meridional wavenumber diagrams. In fact, the modified Rhines scale turns out to be a useful measure of the dominant meridional wavenumber of the modulating Rossby waves; once this is fixed, apart from a spectral peak at the origin (the steady jet), almost all the energy is contained in westward propagating disturbances that follow the theoretical Rossby dispersion relation. Quite consistently, noting that the zonal scale of the modulating waves is restricted to the first few wavenumbers, the energy spectrum is almost entirely contained within the corresponding Rossby dispersion curves on a frequency-meridional wavenumber diagram. Cases when jets do not form are also considered; once again, there is a hint of Rossby wave activity, though the spectral peaks are quite muted. Further, the kinetic energy scaling in frequency domain follows a -5/3 power-law and is distributed much more broadly in frequency-wavenumber diagrams. (C) 2015 AIP Publishing LLC.

This study presents a topology for a single-phase pulse-width modulation (PWM) converter which achieves low-frequency ripple reduction in the dc bus even when there are grid frequency variations. A hybrid filter is introduced to absorb the low-frequency current ripple in the dc bus. The control strategy for the proposed filter does not require the measurement of the dc bus ripple current. The design criteria for selecting the filter components are also presented in this study. The effectiveness of the proposed circuit has been tested and validated experimentally. A smaller dc-link capacitor is sufficient to keep the low-frequency bus ripple to an acceptable range in the proposed topology.

Understanding the changing nature of the intraseasonal oscillatory (ISO) modes of Indian summer monsoon manifested by active and break phase, and their association with extreme rainfall events are necessary for probabilistic estimation of flood-related risks in a warming climate. Here, using ground-based observed rainfall, we define an index to measure the strength of monsoon ISOs and show that the relative strength of the northward-propagating low-frequency ISO (20-60 days) modes have had a significant decreasing trend during the past six decades, possibly attributed to the weakening of large-scale circulation in the region during monsoon season. This reduction is compensated by a gain in synoptic-scale (3-9 days) variability. The decrease in low-frequency ISO variability is associated with a significant decreasing trend in the percentage of extreme events during the active phase of the monsoon. However, this decrease is balanced by significant increasing trends in the percentage of extreme events in the break and transition phases. We also find a significant rise in the occurrence of extremes during early and late monsoon months, mainly over eastern coastal regions. Our study highlights the redistribution of rainfall intensity among periodic (low-frequency) and non-periodic (extreme) modes in a changing climate scenario.

Low frequency fluctuations in the electrical resistivity, or noise, have been used as a sensitive tool to probe into the temperature driven martensite transition in dc magnetron sputtered thin films of nickel titanium shape-memory alloys. Even in the equilibrium or static case, the noise magnitude was more than nine orders of magnitude larger than conventional metallic thin films and had a characteristic dependence on temperature. We observe that the noise while the temperature is being ramped is far larger as compared to the equilibrium noise indicating the sensitivity of electrical resistivity to the nucleation and propagation of domains during the shape recovery. Further, the higher order statistics suggests the existence of long range correlations during the transition. This new characterization is based on the kinetics of disorder in the system and separate from existing techniques and can be integrated to many device applications of shape memory alloys for in-situ shape recovery sensing.

Investigations of vortex velocity fluctuation in time domain have revealed a presence of low frequency velocity fluctuations which evolve with the different driven phases of the vortex state in a single crystal of 2H-NbSe2. The observation of velocity fluctuations with a characteristic low frequency is associated with the onset of nonlinear nature of vortex flow deep in the driven elastic vortex state.
