Confinement and Surface specific interactions call induce Structures otherwise unstable at that temperature and pressure. Here we Study the groove specific water dynamics ill the nucleic acid sequences, poly-AT and poly-GC, in long B-DNA duplex chains by large scale atomistic molecular dynamics simulations, accompanied by thermodynamic analysis. While water dynamics in the major groove remains insensitive to the sequence differences, exactly the opposite is true for the minor groove water. Much slower water dynamics observed in the minor grooves (especially in the AT minor) call be attributed to all enhanced tetrahedral ordering (< t(h)>) of water. The largest value of < t(h)> in the AT minor groove is related to the spine of hydration found in X-ray Structure. The calculated configurational entropy (S-C) of the water molecules is found to be correlated with the self-diffusion coefficient of water in different region via Adam-Gibbs relation D = A exp(-B/TSC), and also with < t(h)>.

We investigate the photoemission from quantum wells (QWs) in ultrathin films (UFs) and quantum well wires (QWWs) of non-linear optical materials on the basis of a newly formulated electron dispersion law considering the anisotropies of the effective electron masses, the spin-orbit splitting constants and the presence of the crystal field splitting within the framework of k.p formalism. The results of quantum confined Ill-V compounds form the special cases of our generalized analysis. The photoemission has also been studied for quantum confined II-VI, n-GaP, n-Ge, PtSb2, stressed materials and Bismuth on the basis of respective dispersion relations. It has been found taking quantum confined CdGeAS(2), InAs, InSb, CdS, GaP, Ge, PtSb2, stressed n-InSb and B1 that the photoemission exhibits quantized variations with the incident photon energy, changing electron concentration and film thickness, respectively, for all types of quantum confinement. The photoemission from CNs exhibits oscillatory dependence with increasing normalized electron degeneracy and the signature of the entirely different types of quantum systems are evident from the plots. Besides, under certain special conditions, all the results for all the materials gets simplified to the well-known expression of photoemission from non-degenerate semiconductors and parabolic energy bands, leading to the compatibility test.

DNA amplification using Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) in a small volume is used in Lab-on-a-chip systems involving DNA manipulation. For few microliters of volume of liquid, it becomes difficult to measure and monitor the thermal profile accurately and reproducibly, which is an essential requirement for successful amplification. Conventional temperature sensors are either not biocompatible or too large and hence positioned away from the liquid leading to calibration errors. In this work we present a fluorescence based detection technique that is completely biocompatible and measures directly the liquid temperature. PCR is demonstrated in a 3 ILL silicon-glass microfabricated device using non-contact induction heating whose temperature is controlled using fluorescence feedback from SYBR green I dye molecules intercalated within sensor DNA. The performance is compared with temperature feedback using a thermocouple sensor. Melting curve followed by gel electrophoresis is used to confirm product specificity after the PCR cycles. An efficient method for the synthesis of symmetrical and unsymmetrical substituted thiourea derivatives by means of simple condensation between available building blocks such Lis airlines and carbon disulfide in aqueous medium is presented. This protocol works smoothly with aliphatic primary amines to afford various di- and trisubstituted thiourea derivatives. The present method is also useful ill synthesizing various substituted 2-mercapto imidazole heterocycles. This method proceeds through a xanthate (amino dithiol deivative) intermediate, unlike isothiocyanate as in all earlier known method.

In wireless ad hoc networks, nodes communicate with far off destinations using intermediate nodes as relays. Since wireless nodes are energy constrained, it may not be in the best interest of a node to always accept relay requests. On the other hand, if all nodes decide not to expend energy in relaying, then network throughput will drop dramatically. Both these extreme scenarios (complete cooperation and complete noncooperation) are inimical to the interests of a user. In this paper, we address the issue of user cooperation in ad hoc networks. We assume that nodes are rational, i.e., their actions are strictly determined by self interest, and that each node is associated with a minimum lifetime constraint. Given these lifetime constraints and the assumption of rational behavior, we are able to determine the optimal share of service that each node should receive. We define this to be the rational Pareto optimal operating point. We then propose a distributed and scalable acceptance algorithm called Generous TIT-FOR-TAT (GTFT). The acceptance algorithm is used by the nodes to decide whether to accept or reject a relay request. We show that GTFT results in a Nash equilibrium and prove that the system converges to the rational and optimal operating point.

The stability of scheduled multiaccess communication with random coding and independent decoding of messages is investigated. The number of messages that may be scheduled for simultaneous transmission is limited to a given maximum value, and the channels from transmitters to receiver are quasistatic, flat, and have independent fades. Requests for message transmissions are assumed to arrive according to an i.i.d. arrival process. Then, we show the following: (1) in the limit of large message alphabet size, the stability region has an interference limited information-theoretic capacity interpretation, (2) state-independent scheduling policies achieve this asymptotic stability region, and (3) in the asymptotic limit corresponding to immediate access, the stability region for non-idling scheduling policies is shown to be identical irrespective of received signal powers.

This paper presents a study of kinematic and force singularities in parallel manipulators and closed-loop mechanisms and their relationship to accessibility and controllability of such manipulators and closed-loop mechanisms, Parallel manipulators and closed-loop mechanisms are classified according to their degrees of freedom, number of output Cartesian variables used to describe their motion and the number of actuated joint inputs. The singularities in the workspace are obtained by considering the force transformation matrix which maps the forces and torques in joint space to output forces and torques ill Cartesian space. The regions in the workspace which violate the small time local controllability (STLC) and small time local accessibility (STLA) condition are obtained by deriving the equations of motion in terms of Cartesian variables and by using techniques from Lie algebra. We show that for fully actuated manipulators when the number ofactuated joint inputs is equal to the number of output Cartesian variables, and the force transformation matrix loses rank, the parallel manipulator does not meet the STLC requirement. For the case where the number of joint inputs is less than the number of output Cartesian variables, if the constraint forces and torques (represented by the Lagrange multipliers) become infinite, the force transformation matrix loses rank. Finally, we show that the singular and non-STLC regions in the workspace of a parallel manipulator and closed-loop mechanism can be reduced by adding redundant joint actuators and links. The results are illustrated with the help of numerical examples where we plot the singular and non-STLC/non-STLA regions of parallel manipulators and closed-loop mechanisms belonging to the above mentioned classes. In positron emission tomography (PET), image reconstruction is a demanding problem. Since, PET image reconstruction is an ill-posed inverse problem, new methodologies need to be developed. Although previous studies show that incorporation of spatial and median priors improves the image quality, the image artifacts such as over-smoothing and streaking are evident in the reconstructed image. In this work, we use a simple, yet powerful technique to tackle the PET image reconstruction problem. Proposed technique is based on the integration of Bayesian approach with that of finite impulse response (FIR) filter. A FIR filter is designed whose coefficients are determined based on the surface diffusion model. The resulting reconstructed image is iteratively filtered and fed back to obtain the new estimate. Experiments are performed on a simulated PET system. The results show that the proposed approach is better than recently proposed MRP algorithm in terms of image quality and normalized mean square error.

We develop a multi-class discrete-time processor-sharing queueing model for scheduled message communication over a discrete memoryless degraded broadcast channel. The framework we consider here models both the random message arrivals and the subsequent reliable communication by suitably combining techniques from queueing theory and information theory. Requests for message transmissions are assumed to arrive according to i.i.d. arrival processes. Then, (i) we derive an outer bound to the stability region of message arrival rate vectors achievable by the class of stationary scheduling policies, (ii) we show for any message arrival rate vector that satisfies the outer bound, that there exists a stationary "state-independent" policy that results in a stable system for the corresponding message arrival processes, and (iii) under an asymptotic regime, we show that the stability region of information arrival rate vectors is the information-theoretic capacity region of a degraded broadcast channel.

The static response of thin, wrinkled membranes is studied using both a tension field approximation based on plane stress conditions and a 3D nonlinear elasticityformulation, discretized through 8-noded Cosserat point elements. While the tension field approach only obtains the wrinkled/slack regions and at best a measure of the extent of wrinkliness, the 3D elasticity solution provides, in principle, the deformed shape of a wrinkled/slack membrane. However, since membranes barely resist compression, the discretized and linearized system equations via both the approaches are ill-conditioned and solutions could thus be sensitive to discretizations errors as well as other sources of noises/imperfections. We propose a regularized, pseudo-dynamical recursion scheme that provides a sequence of updates, which are almost insensitive to theregularizing term as well as the time step size used for integrating the pseudo-dynamical form. This is borne out through several numerical examples wherein the relative performance of the proposed recursion scheme vis-a-vis a regularized Newton strategy is compared. The pseudo-time marching strategy, when implemented using 3D Cosserat point elements, also provides a computationally cheaper, numerically accurate and simpler alternative to that using geometrically exact shell theories for computing large deformations of membranes in the presence of wrinkles. In this paper, direct numerical simulation of autoignition in an initially non-premixed medium under isotropic, homogeneous, and decaying turbulence is presented. The pressure-based method developed herein is a spectral implementation of the sequential steps followed in the predictor-corrector type of algorithms; it includes the effects of density fluctuations caused by spatial inhomogeneities ill temperature and species. The velocity and pressure field are solved in the spectral space while the scalars and density field are solved in the physical space. The presented results reveal that the autoignition spots originate and evolve at locations where (1) the composition corresponds to a small range around a specific mixture fraction, and (2) the conditional scaler dissipation rate is low. A careful examination of the data obtained indicates that the autoignition spots originate in the vortex cores, and the hot gases travel outward as combustion progresses. Hence, the applicability of the transient laminar flamelet model for this problem is questioned. The dependence of autoignition characteristics on parameters such as (1) die initial eddy-turnover time and (2) the initial ratio of length scale of scalars to that of velocities are investigated. Certain implications of new results on the conditional moment closure modeling are discussed.

Double perovskite oxides Sr2FeMoO6 have attracted a great interest for their peculiar magneto-transport properties, and, ill particular, for the large values of low-field magneto-resistance (MR) which remains elevated even at room temperature, thanks to their high Curie temperature (T-c > 400 K). These properties are strongly influenced by chemical cation disorder, that is by the relative arrangement of Fe and Mo on their sublattices: the regular alternation of Fe and Mo enhances the M R and saturation magnetization. On the contrary the disorder generally depresses the magnetization and worsen the MR response. In this work the X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) technique has been employed in order to probe the cation order from a local point of view. XAFS spectra were collected at the Fe and Mo K edges on Sr2FeMoO6 samples with different degree of long-range chemical order. The XAFS results prove that a high degree of short-range cation order is preserved, despite the different long-range order: the Fe-Mo correlations are always preferred over the Fe-Fe and Mo-Mo ones in the perfectly ordered as well as in highly disordered samples.

Iron is a major pollutant released as a by-product during several industrial operations especially during acid mining of metal ores. In this paper, the use of Bengal gram husk (husk of channa dal, Cicer arientinum) in the biosorption of Fe(III) from aqueous solutions is discussed. Parameters like agitation time, adsorbent dosage and pH were studied at different Fe(Ill) concentrations. The adsorption data fit well with Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models. The adsorption capacity (q(max)) calculated from the Langmuir isotherm was 72.16 mg of Fe(III)/g of the biosorbent at an initial pH of 2.5. Desorption Studies were performed at different concentrations of hydrochloric acid showing that quantitative recovery of the metal ion is possible. The infrared spectra of the biomass before and after treatment with Fe(III), revealed that hydroxyl, carboxyl and amide bonds are involved in the uptake of Fe(III) ions.

This study reports the details of the finite element analysis of eleven shear critical partially prestressed concrete T-beams having steel fibers over partial or full depth. Prestressed concrete T-beams having a shear span to depth ratio of 2.65 and 1.59 and failing in the shear have been analyzed Using 'ANSYS'. The 'ANSYS' model accounts for the nonlinear phenomenon, such as, bond-slip of longitudinal reinforcements, post-cracking tensile stiffness of the concrete, stress transfer across the cracked blocks of the concrete and load sustenance through the bridging of steel fibers at crack interlace. The concrete is modeled using 'SOLID65'-eight-node brick element, which is capable Of simulating the cracking and crushing behavior of brittle materials. The reinforcements such as deformed bars, prestressing wires and steel fibers have been modeled discretely Using 'LINK8' - 3D spar element. The slip between the reinforcement (rebar, fibers) and the concrete has been modeled using a 'COMBIN39'-non-linear spring element connecting the nodes of the 'LINK8' element representing the reinforcement and nodes of the 'SOLID65' elements representing the concrete. The 'ANSYS' model correctly predicted the diagonal tension failure and shear compression failure of prestressed concrete beams observed in the experiment. I-lie capability of the model to capture the critical crack regions, loads and deflections for various types Of shear failures ill prestressed concrete beam has been illustrated.

Often the soil hydraulic parameters are obtained by the inversion of measured data (e.g. soil moisture, pressure head, and cumulative infiltration, etc.). However, the inverse problem in unsaturated zone is ill-posed due to various reasons, and hence the parameters become non-unique. The presence of multiple soil layers brings the additional complexities in the inverse modelling. The generalized likelihood uncertainty estimate (GLUE) is a useful approach to estimate the parameters and their uncertainty when dealing with soil moisture dynamics which is a highly non-linear problem. Because the estimated parameters depend on the modelling scale, inverse modelling carried out on laboratory data and field data may provide independent estimates. The objective of this paper is to compare the parameters and their uncertainty estimated through experiments in the laboratory and in the field and to assess which of the soil hydraulic parameters are independent of the experiment. The first two layers in the field site are characterized by Loamy sand and Loamy. The mean soil moisture and pressure head at three depths are measured with an interval of half hour for a period of 1 week using the evaporation method for the laboratory experiment, whereas soil moisture at three different depths (60, 110, and 200 cm) is measured with an interval of 1 h for 2 years for the field experiment. A one-dimensional soil moisture model on the basis of the finite difference method was used. The calibration and validation are approximately for 1 year each. The model performance was found to be good with root mean square error (RMSE) varying from 2 to 4 cm(3) cm(-3). It is found from the two experiments that mean and uncertainty in the saturated soil moisture (theta(s)) and shape parameter (n) of van Genuchten equations are similar for both the soil types.
