The shock manifold equation is a first order nonlinear partial differential equation, which describes the kinematics of a shockfront in an ideal gas with constant specific heats. However, it was found that there was more than one of these shock manifold equations, and the shock surface could be embedded in a one parameter family of surfaces, obtained as a solution of any of these shock manifold equations. Associated with each shock manifold equation is a set of characteristic curves called lsquoshock raysrsquo. This paper investigates the nature of various associated shock ray equations.

Tribology of a well known solid lubricant molybdenum disulphide is studied here in water and oil medium, over a large range of contact dimensions. Lateral force microscopy is used to identify the deformation modes, intra-crystalline slip, plastic grooving, fragmentation and fracture, of single particles The medium and agglomeration were found to dictate the deformation mode Steel on steel tribology lubricated by suspensions of these particles in liquid media was conducted over a range of contact pressure and sliding velocity. A scrutiny of the frictional data with the aid of Raman spectroscopy to identify the transfer film, suggested that the particle size, as it is at contact, is an important tribological parameter Ultrasonication of the suspension and dispersion of the particle by surfactants were used to control the apriori particle size fed into the suspension.Correspondence of friction data of the gently sonicated suspension with that of the ultrasonicated suspension with dispersants indicated the importance of liquid ingestion by these particles as it controls their mode of deformation and consequent tribology. Thermal contact conductance (TCC) measurements are made on bare and gold plated (<= 0.5 mu m) oxygen free high conductivity (OFHC) Cu and brass contacts in vacuum, nitrogen, and argon environments. It is observed that the TCC in gaseous environment is significantly higher than that in vacuum due to the enhanced thermal gap conductance. It is found that for a given contact load and gas pressure, the thermal gap conductance for bare OFHC Cu contacts is higher than that for gold plated contacts. It is due to the difference in the molecular weights of copper and gold, which influences the exchange of kinetic energy between the gas molecules and contact surfaces. Furthermore, the gap conductance is found to increase with increasing thickness of gold plating. Topography measurements and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis of contact surfaces revealed that surfaces become smoother with increasing gold plating thickness, thus resulting in smaller gaps and consequently higher gap conductance. The nonlinear current voltage characteristics of a point contact convey information about various excitations in the metal. We have made a poin~ contact study on a superconductor to see the band gap and on a normal metal to see Ihe transport characteristics.

A hard roller under normal load is driven by the flat surface of a soft disc. Corrugations are generated on the disc when certain surface morphological, load, speed and mechanical property-oriented conditions are met. The evolutionary process of corrugation generation and the preconditions necessary for it are investigated morphologically and mechanically for four disc materials: mild steel, brass, PTFE and PMMA.

This paper describes the electrical contact resistance (ECR) measurements made on thin gold plated (gold plating of <= 0.5 mu m with a Ni underlayer of similar to 2 mu m) oxygen free high conductivity (OFHC) Cu contacts in vacuum environment. ECR in gold plated OFHC Cu contacts is found to be slightly higher than that in bare OFHC Cu contacts. Even though gold is a softer material than copper, the relatively high ECR values observed in gold plated contacts are mainly due to the higher hardness and electrical resistivity of the underlying Ni layer. It is well known that ECR is directly related to plating factor, which increases with increasing coating thickness when the electrical resistivity of coating material is more than that of substrate. Surprisingly, in the present case it is found that the ECR decreases with increasing gold layer thickness on OFHC Cu substrate (gold has higher electrical resistivity than OFHC Cu). It is analytically demonstrated from the topography and microhardness measurements results that this peculiar behavior is associated with thin gold platings, where the changes in surface roughness and microhardness with increasing layer thickness overshadow the effect of plating factor on ECR.

A new method based on analysis of a single diffraction pattern is proposed to measure deflections in micro-cantilever (MC) based sensor probes, achieving typical deflection resolutions of 1nm and surface stress changes of 50 mu N/m. The proposed method employs a double MC structure where the deflection of one of the micro-cantilevers relative to the other due to surface stress changes results in a linear shift of intensity maxima of the Fraunhofer diffraction pattern of the transilluminated MC. Measurement of such shifts in the intensity maxima of a particular order along the length of the structure can be done to an accuracy of 0.01mm leading to the proposed sensitivity of deflection measurement in a typical microcantilever. This method can overcome the fundamental measurement sensitivity limit set by diffraction and pointing stability of laser beam in the widely used Optical Beam Deflection method (OBDM).

Rigorous elastic-plastic finite element analysis of joints subjected to cyclic loading is carried out. An incremental-iterative algorithm is developed in a modular form combining elasto-plastic material behaviour and contact stress analysis. For the case of the interference fit, the analysis sequentially carries out insertion of the pin and application of the load on the joint, covering possible initiation of separation (and/or yielding) and progressively the receding/advancing contact at the pin-plate interface. Deformations of both the plate and the pin are considered in the analysis. Numerical examples are presented for the case of an interference fit pin in a large plate under remote cyclic tension, and for an interference fit pin lug joint subjected to cyclic loading. A detailed study is carried out for the latter problem considering the effect of change in contact/separation at the pin-plate interface on local stresses, strains and redistribution of these stresses with the spread of a plastic zone. The results of the study are a useful input for the estimation of the fatigue life of joints. Copyright (C) 1996 Elsevier Science Ltd

Electron transfer reactions between donor-acceptor pairs in solution and in organized media exhibit diverse behaviour. Recent experiments have indicated an interesting breakdown of the Marcus parabolic energy gap dependence in the normal regime for back electron transfer from contact ion pairs. A novel explanation of this breakdown has recently been proposed (M. Tachiya and S. Murata, J. Am. Chem. Sec., 116(1994) 2434) which attributes the breakdown to the interplay between the relaxation in the reactant well and the reaction. A particularly interesting aspect of the model is that it envisages the electron transfer in the normal regime to take place from a completely non-equilibrium condition. In this article a time dependent solution of the model is presented for the first time, after generalizing it to include a realistic initial population distribution. The decay of the contact ion pair population is completely non-exponential. This can be used to check the validity of the Tachiya-Murata model. The dynamics of electron transfer from the solvent separated ion pair, which seem to obey the Marcus relation, is exponential.

Mechanical fasteners introduce structural weakness, still they are an essential constituent of most structures as they permit interchangeability of parts and flexible construction programs; Variable temperature operations of Aerospace and Nuclear structures make it imperative to investigate the thermoelastic behaviour of joints. This paper explores analytically similar mechanical and thermal parameters to generalise the thermomechanical behaviour of a pin joint in an isotropic Sheet for a class of configurations. This generalization enables virtually direct application of existing information regarding joints under pure mechanical loading to joints subjected to combined thermomechanical loading, thus reducing the efforts of both the analyst and the designer by an order of magnitude. Epitaxial LaNiO3 metallic oxide thin films have been grown on c-axis oriented YBa2Cu3O7-delta thin films on LaAlO3 substrates by pulsed laser deposition technique and the interface formed between the two films has been examined by measuring the contact conductance of the same. The specific contact conductance of the interface measured using a modified four probe method was found to be 1.4 to 6 x 10(4) ohm(-1) cm(-2) at 77 K, There are indications that contact conductance can be brought closer to that obtained for noble metal-YBCO interface.

Particulate composites based on polymer matrices generally contain fillers, especially those that are abundantly available and are cheaper. The inclusion of these, besides improving the properties, makes the system costwise viable, In the present study, fly ash was tried as a filler in epoxy. The filler particle surfaces were modified using three chemical surface treatment techniques in order to elicit the effect of adhesion at the interface on the mechanical properties of these composites. The compatibilizing of the filler with the use of a silane coupling agent yielded the best compression strength values. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) has been used to characterize and supplement the mechanical test data.
