The physical design of a VLSI circuit involves circuit partitioning as a subtask. Typically, it is necessary to partition a large electrical circuit into several smaller circuits such that the total cross-wiring is minimized. This problem is a variant of the more general graph partitioning problem, and it is known that there does not exist a polynomial time algorithm to obtain an optimal partition. The heuristic procedure proposed by Kernighan and Lin1,2 requires O(n2 log2n) time to obtain a near-optimal two-way partition of a circuit with n modules. In the VLSI context, due to the large problem size involved, this computational requirement is unacceptably high. This paper is concerned with the hardware acceleration of the Kernighan-Lin procedure on an SIMD architecture. The proposed parallel partitioning algorithm requires O(n) processors, and has a time complexity of O(n log2n). In the proposed scheme, the reduced array architecture is employed with due considerations towards cost effectiveness and VLSI realizability of the architecture. The authors are not aware of any earlier attempts to parallelize a circuit partitioning algorithm in general or the Kernighan-Lin algorithm in particular. The use of the reduced array architecture is novel and opens up the possibilities of using this computing structure for several other applications in electronic design automation.

The problem of narrowband CFAR (constant false alarm rate) detection of an acoustic source at an unknown location in a range-independent shallow ocean is considered. If a target is present, the received signal vector at an array of N sensors belongs to an M-dimensional subspace if N exceeds the number of propagating modes M in the ocean. A subspace detection method which utilises the knowledge of the signal subspace to enhance the detector performance is presented in thisMpaper. It is shown that, for a given number of sensors N, the performance of a detector using a vector sensor array is significantly better than that using a scalar sensor array. If a target is detected, the detector using a vector sensor array also provides a concurrent coarse estimate of the bearing of the target.

A damage detection and imaging methodology based on symmetry of neighborhood sensor path and similarity of signal patterns with respect to radial paths in a circular array of sensors has been developed It uses information regarding Limb wave propagation along with a triangulation scheme to rapidly locate and quantify the severity of damage without using all of the sensor data. In a plate like structure, such a scheme can be effectively employed besides full field imaging of wave scattering pattern from the damage, if present in the plate. This new scheme is validated experimentally. Hole and corrosion type damages have been detected and quantified using the proposed scheme successfully. A wavelet based cumulative damage index has been studied which shows monotonic sensitivity against the severity of the damage. which is most desired in a Structural Health Monitoring system. An algebraic generalization of the well-known binary q-function array to a multivalued q-function array is presented. It is possible to associate tree-structure realizations for binary q-functions and multivalued q-functions. Synthesis of multivalued functions using this array is very simple

Thin films of hybrid arrays of cadmium selenide quantum dots and polymer grafted gold nanoparticles have been prepared using a BCP template. Controlling the dispersion and location of the respective nanoparticles allows us to tune the exciton-plasmon interaction in such hybrid arrays and hence control their optical properties. The observed photoluminescence of the hybrid array films is interpreted in terms of the dispersion and location of the gold nanoparticles and quantum dots in the block copolymer matrix.

The temperature variation in the insulation around an electronic component, mounted on a horizontal circuit board is studied numerically. The flow is assumed to be laminar and fully developed. The effect of mixed convection and two different types of insulation are considered. The mass, momentum and energy conservation equations in the fluid and conduction equation in the insulation are solved using the SIMPLER algorithm. Computations are carried out for liquid Freon and water, for different conductivity ratios, and different Rayleigh numbers. It is demonstrated that the temperature variation within the insulation becomes important when the thermal conductivity of the insulation is less than ten times the thermal conductivity of the cooling medium.

A simple and efficient algorithm for the bandwidth reduction of sparse symmetric matrices is proposed. It involves column-row permutations and is well-suited to map onto the linear array topology of the SIMD architectures. The efficiency of the algorithm is compared with the other existing algorithms. The interconnectivity and the memory requirement of the linear array are discussed and the complexity of its layout area is derived. The parallel version of the algorithm mapped onto the linear array is then introduced and is explained with the help of an example. The optimality of the parallel algorithm is proved by deriving the time complexities of the algorithm on a single processor and the linear array.

In this paper we develop a multithreaded VLSI processor linear array architecture to render complex environments based on the radiosity approach. The processing elements are identical and multithreaded. They work in Single Program Multiple Data (SPMD) mode. A new algorithm to do the radiosity computations based on the progressive refinement approach[2] is proposed. Simulation results indicate that the architecture is latency tolerant and scalable. It is shown that a linear array of 128 uni-threaded processing elements sustains a throughput close to 0.4 million patches/sec.

Elliptical conformal transformation was used to derive closed form expressions for the equivalent circuit series inductance and shunt capacitance per period of a serpentine folded-waveguide slow-wave structure including the effects of the beam-hole. The lumped parameters were subsequently interpreted for the dispersion and interaction impedance characteristics of the structure. The analysis was benchmarked for two typical millimeter-wave structures operating in Ka- and W-bands, against measurement, 3D electromagnetic modeling using CST Microwave Studio, parametric analysis and equivalent circuit analysis. A graphical display of the frequency content of background, electroencephalogram (EEG) activity is obtained by calculating the spectral estimates using autocorrelation autoregressive method and the classical Fourier transform method, Display of spectral content of consecutive data segments is made using hidden-line suppression technique so as to get a spectral array, The autoregressive spectral array (ASA) is found to be sensitive to baseline drift, Following baseline correction the autoregressive technique is found to be superior to the Fourier method of compressed spectral array (CSA) in detecting the transitions in the frequencies of the signal. The smoothed ASA gives a better picture of transitions and changes in the background activity, The ASA can be made to adapt to specific changes of dominant frequencies while eliminating unnecessary peaks in the spectrum. The utility,of the ASA for background EEG analysis is discussed,

In this letter, we propose a method for blind separation of d co-channel BPSK signals arriving at an antenna array. Our method involves two steps. In the first step, the received data vectors at the output of the array is grouped into 2d clusters. In the second step, we assign the 2d d-tuples with ±1 elements to these clusters in a consistent fashion. From the knowledge of the cluster to which a data vector belongs, we estimate the bits transmitted at that instant. Computer simulations are used to study the performance of our method

The design and development of nonresonant edge slot antenna for phased array applications has been presented. The radiating element is a slot cut on the narrow wall of rectangular waveguide (edge slot). The admittance characteristics of the edge slot have been rigorously studied using a novel hybrid method. Nonresonant arrays have been fabricated using the present slot characterization data and the earlier published data. The experimentally measured electrical characteristics of the antenna are presented which clearly brings out the accuracy of the present method.

We have imaged the H92alpha and H75alpha radio recombination line (RRL) emissions from the starburst galaxy NGC 253 with a resolution of similar to4 pc. The peak of the RRL emission at both frequencies coincides with the unresolved radio nucleus. Both lines observed toward the nucleus are extremely wide, with FWHMs of similar to200 km s(-1). Modeling the RRL and radio continuum data for the radio nucleus shows that the lines arise in gas whose density is similar to10(4) cm(-3) and mass is a few thousand M., which requires an ionizing flux of (6-20) x 10(51) photons s(-1). We consider a supernova remnant (SNR) expanding in a dense medium, a star cluster, and also an active galactic nucleus (AGN) as potential ionizing sources. Based on dynamical arguments, we rule out an SNR as a viable ionizing source. A star cluster model is considered, and the dynamics of the ionized gas in a stellar-wind driven structure are investigated. Such a model is only consistent with the properties of the ionized gas for a cluster younger than similar to10(5) yr. The existence of such a young cluster at the nucleus seems improbable. The third model assumes the ionizing source to be an AGN at the nucleus. In this model, it is shown that the observed X-ray flux is too weak to account for the required ionizing photon flux. However, the ionization requirement can be explained if the accretion disk is assumed to have a big blue bump in its spectrum. Hence, we favor an AGN at the nucleus as the source responsible for ionizing the observed RRLs. A hybrid model consisting of an inner advection-dominated accretion flow disk and an outer thin disk is suggested, which could explain the radio, UV, and X-ray luminosities of the nucleus.
