Oxovanadium(IV) complexes [VOCl(B)(2)]Cl (1-3) of phenanthroline bases (B), viz. 1,10-phenanthroline (phen in 1), dipyrido[3,2-d: 2', 3'-f] quinoxaline (dpq in 2) and dipyrido[3,2-a: 2', 3'-c] phenazine (dppz in 3), have been prepared, characterized and their DNA and protein binding, photo-induced DNA and protein cleavage activity andm photocytotoxicity have been studied. Complex 2, structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography, shows the presence of a vanadyl group in VOClN4 coordination geometry. The dpq ligand displays a chelating mode of binding with a N-donor site trans to the oxo-group. The chloride ligand is cis to the oxo-group. The one-electron paramagnetic complexes show a d-d band near 715 nm in 15% DMF-Tris-HCl buffer. The complexes are redox active exhibiting a V(IV)/V(III) redox couple within -0.5 to -0.7 V vs. SCE in 20% DMF-Tris-HCl/0.1 M KCl. The complexes bind to calf thymus (CT) DNA in the order: 3 (dppz) > 2 (dpq) > 1 (phen). The binding data reveal the groove and/or partial intercalative DNA binding nature of the complexes. The complexes show chemical nuclease'' activity in the dark in the presence of 3-mercaptopropionic acid or hydrogen peroxide via a hydroxyl radical pathway. The dpq and dppz complexes are efficient photocleavers of DNA in UV-A light of 365 nm forming reactive singlet oxygen (O-1(2)) and hydroxyl radical ((OH)-O-center dot) species. Complexes 2 and 3 also show DNA cleavage activity in red light (> 750 nm) by an exclusive (OH)-O-center dot pathway. The complexes display a binding propensity to bovine serum albumin (BSA) protein giving K-BSA values in the range of 7.1 x 10(4)-1.8 x 10(5) M-1. The dppz complex 3 shows BSA and lysozyme protein cleavage activity in UV-A light of 365 nm via (OH)-O-center dot pathway. The dppz complex 3 exhibits significant PDT effect in human cervical cancer HeLa cells giving IC50 values of 1.0 mu M and 12.0 mu M in UV-A and visible light, respectively (IC50 = > 100 mu M in the dark).

The polymer-amorphous carbon composites show a negative magnetoconductance which varies as B-2 at low fields which changes to B-1/2 at sufficiently high fields. The magnetoconductance gives the evidence of electron-electron interaction in composites whose conductivity follows thermal fluctuation induced tunneling and falls in the critical regime. Calcium sulphate (CaSO4) pseudomicrorods have been synthesized by alow-temperature hydrothermal method using CaSO4 powder as a precursor and hexadecylamine as a surfactant at 180 degrees C for at different intervals of time. The powder X-ray diffraction pattern indicates that the as-formed pseudomicrorods are of orthorhombic phase with lattice parameters a = 7.0023(4) angstrom, b = 6.9939(5) angstrom and c = 6.2434(4) angstrom. Scanning electron microscopy images show that the pseudomicrorods have diameters of about 0.2-2.5 mm and lengths of about 2-10 mm. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy shows a strong doublet near 609 and 681 cm(-1) arising from nu(4) (SO42) bending vibrations. The strongest band observed at 1132 cm(-1) is associated with nu(3) (SO42-) stretching vibrations. The band near 420-450 cm(-1) is attributed to nu(2) (SO42-) bending vibrations. The Raman spectrum exhibits an intense peak at 1008 cm(-1) associated with the SO42- mode. The photoluminescence spectrum exhibits UV bands (330, 350 nm), strong green bands (402, 436 nm) and weak blue bands (503 nm). A widening of the optical band gap was observed as the particle size decreased.

Lanthanide complexes of formulation [La(B)(2)(NO3)(3)] (1-3) and [Gd(B)(2)(NO3)(3)] (4-6), where B is a N,N-donor phenanthroline base, namely, 1,10-phenanthroline (phen in 1, 4),dipyrido[3,2-d2',3'-f]quinoxaline (dpq in 2,5) and dipyrido[3,2-a2',3'-c]phenazine (dppz in 3, 6), have been prepared, characterized from physicochemical data, and their photoinduced DNA and protein cleavage activity studied The photocytotoxicity of the dppz complexes 3 and 6 has been studied using HeLa cancer cells. The complexes exhibitligand centered bands in the UV region The dppz complexes show thelowest energy band at 380 nm in N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) The La(III)complexes are diamagnetic. The Gd(III) complexes (4-6) have magneticmoments that correspond to seven unpaired electrons The complexes are1(.)1 electrolytic in aqueous DMF The dpq and dppz complexes in DMFshow ligand-based reductions. The complexes display moderate binding propensity to calf thymus DNA giving binding constant values in the range of 5.7 x 10(4)-5.8 x 10(5) M-1 with a relative order. 3, 6 (dppz)> 2, 5 (dpq) > 1, 4 (phen) The binding data suggest DNA surface and/or groove binding nature of the complexes. The complexes do not show any hydrolytic cleavage of plasmid supercoiled pUC19 DNA. The dpq and dppz complexes efficiently cleave SC DNA to its nicked circular form onexposure to UV-A light of 365 nm at nanomolar complex concentration. Mechanistic studies reveal the involvement of singlet oxygen (O-1(2)) and hydroxyl radical (HO center dot) as the cleavage active species. The complexes show binding propensity to bovine serum albumin (BSA)protein giving K-BSA values of similar to 10(5) M-1. The dppz complexes 3 and 6 show BSA protein cleavage activity in UV-A light of 365 nm The dppz complexes 3 and 6 exhibit significant photocytotoxicity in HeLa cells giving respective IC50 values of 341 nM and 573 nM in UV-A light of 365 nm for an exposure time of 15 min (IC50 > 100 mu M in dark for both the complexes) Control experiments show significant dark and phototoxicity of the dppz base alone (IC50 = 413 nM in light with 4 h incubation in dark and 116 mu M in dark with 24 h incubation). A significant decrease in the dark toxicity of the dppz base is observedon binding to the lanthanide ions while retaining similar phototoxicity.

The study of steady-state flows in radiation-gas-dynamics, when radiation pressure is negligible in comparison with gas pressure, can be reduced to the study of a single first-order ordinary differential equation in particle velocity and radiation pressure. The class of steady flows, determined by the fact that the velocities in two uniform states are real, i.e. the Rankine-Hugoniot points are real, has been discussed in detail in a previous paper by one of us, when the Mach number M of the flow in one of the uniform states (at x=+∞) is greater than one and the flow direction is in the negative direction of the x-axis. In this paper we have discussed the case when M is less than or equal to one and the flow direction is still in the negative direction of the x-axis. We have drawn the various phase planes and the integral curves in each phase plane give various steady flows. We have also discussed the appearance of discontinuities in these flows.

The asymmetric stress strain behavior under tension/compression in an initial < 100 > B-2-NiAl nanowire is investigated considering two different surface configurations i.e., < 100 >/(0 1 0) (0 0 1) and < 100 >/(0 1 1) (0 - 1 1). This behavior is attributed to two different deformation mechanisms namely a slip dominated deformation under compression and a known twinning dominated deformation under tension. It is also shown that B2 -> BCT (body-centered-tetragonal) phase transformation under tensile loading is independent of the surface configurations for an initial < 100 > oriented NiAl nanowire. Under tensile loading, the nanowire undergoes a stress-induced martensiticphase transformation from an initial B2 phase to BCT phase via twinning along {110} plane with failure strain of similar to 0.30. On the other hand, a compressive loading causes failure of these nanowires via brittle fracture after compressive yielding, with a maximum failure strain of similar to-0.12. Such brittle fracture under compressive loading occurs via slip along {110} plane without any phase transformations. Softening/hardening behavior is also reported for the first time in these nanowires under tensile/compressive loadings, which cause asymmetry in their yield strength behavior in the stress strain space. Result shows that a sharp increase in energy with increasing strain under compressive loading causes hardening of the nanowire, and hence, gives improved yield strength as compared to tensile loading. A new approach for describing dislocations and other topological defects in crystals, based on the density wave theory of Ramakrishnan and Yussouff is presented. Quantitative calculations are discussed in brief for the order parameter profiles, the atomic configuration and the free energy of a screw dislocation with Burgers vector b = (a/2, a/2,a/2 ) in a bcc solid. Our results for the free energy of the dislocation in a crystal of sizeR, when expressed as (λb 2/4π) ln (αR/|b|) whereλ is the shear elastic constant, yield, for example, the valueα ⋍ 1·85 for sodium at its freezing temperature (371°K). The density distribution in the presence of the dislocation shows that the dislocation core has a columnar character. To our knowledge, this study represents the first calculation of dislocation structure, including the core, within the framework of an order parameter theory incorporating thermal effects.

The formation and decomposition of quasicrystalline and crystalline phases in as-rapidly solidified and annealed commercial AISI 2024 aluminum alloy containing 2 wt% Li have been investigated by detailed transmission electron microscopy, including a combination of bright field and dark field imaging, selected area diffraction pattern analysis and energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis. The microstructure of as-melt spun 2024-2Li consists of alpha-Al cells, containing small coherent delta' precipitates, and particles or a continuous network of the icosahedral phase at the cell boundaries. After annealing at 300-degrees-C, the intercellular particles of the icosahedral phase coarsen progressively and assume a more faceted shape; after annealing at 400-degrees-C, particles of the decagonal and crystalline O phases precipitate heterogeneously on preexisting particles of the icosahedral phase; and after annealling at 500-degrees-C, the icosahedral and decagonal phases dissolve completely, and small particles of the crystalline O phase remain together with newly precipitated plates of the T1 phase. The icosahedral phase in melt spun and melt spun/annealed 2024-2Li belongs to the Al6CuLi3 class of icosahedral phases, with a quasilattice constant of 0.51 nm, a stoichiometry of (Al, Si)6(Cu, Mn, Fe) (Li, Mg)3 and an average composition of Al-24.1 at.% Cu-6.4 at.% Mg-1.7 at.% Si-0.3 at.% Mn-0.5 at.% Fe as-melt spun and Al-21.9 at.% Cu-6.3 at.% Mg-1.0 at.% Si-0.5 at.% Fe as-heat-treated. The decagonal phase in melt spun/annealed 2024-2Li belongs to the Al4Mn class of decagonal phases, with a periodicity of 1.23 nm along the 10-fold symmetry axis, a stoichiometry of Al3(Cu, Mn, Fe) and an average composition of Al-10.3 at.% Cu-13.8 at.% Mn-2.3 at.% Fe. The crystalline O phase in melt spun/annealed 2024-2Li has an orthorhombic structure with lattice parameters of a = 2.24 nm, b = 2.35 nm and c = 1.23 nm, a stoichiometry of Al3(Cu, Mn, Fe) and an average composition of Al-11.0 at.% Cu-14.8 at.% Mn-3.9 at.% Fe. Detailed analysis of selected area diffraction patterns shows a close similarity between the icosahedral, decagonal and crystalline O phases in melt spun and melt spun/annealed 2024-2Li. In particular, the decagonal phase and crystalline O phases have a similar composition, and exhibit an orientation relationship which can be expressed as: [GRAPHICS] suggesting that the orthorhombic O phase is an approximant structure for the decagonal phase.

An asymmetric binary search switching technique for a successive approximation register (SAR) ADC is presented, and trade-off between switching energy and conversion cycles is discussed. Without using any additional switches, the proposed technique consumes 46% less switching energy, for a small input swing (0.5 V-ref (P-P)), as compared to the last reported efficient switching technique in literature for an 8-bit SAR ADC. For a full input swing (2 V-ref (P-P)), the proposed technique consumes 16.5% less switching energy.

The dielectric response of pulsed laser ablated Bi-1 Zn-5(1) Nb-0(1) O-5(7) (BZN) thin films are investigated within the temperature range of 300-660 K and frequency range of 100 Hz-100 kHz Thin film exhibited a strong dielectric relaxation behavior A sharp rise in dielectric constant of BZN thin film at high temperatures is related to disorder in canon and anion lattices Observed dielectric relaxation implies a redistribution of charges within the unit cell This phenomenon suggests that the large change in dielectric constant is due to a dynamical rise of dipolar fluctuations in the unit cell XPS spectra of BZN (A(2)B(2)O(6)O') cubic pyrochlore confirm that the relaxation corresponds to the ionic hopping among the A and O' positions of several local potential minima Barrier height for hopping is distributed between 0 and 0 94 eV The O is spectrum confirms presence of two types of oxygen in BZN thin film The disorder in charge neutralized thin film is correlated with XPS spectra (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd All rights reserved

The dielectric properties of BaBi4Ti4O15 ceramics were investigated as a function of frequency (10(2)-10(6) Hz) at various temperatures (30 degrees C-470 degrees C), covering the phase transition temperature. Two different conduction mechanisms were obtained by fitting the complex impedance data to Cole-Cole equation. The grain and grain boundary resistivities were found to follow the Arrhenius law associated with activation energies: E-g similar to 1.12 eV below T-m and E-g similar to 0.70 eV above T-m for the grain conduction; and E-gb similar to 0.93 eV below T-m and E-gb similar to 0.71 eV above T-m for the grain boundary conduction. Relaxation times extracted using imaginary part of complex impedance Z `'(omega) and modulus M `'(omega) were also found to follow the Arrhenius law and showed an anomaly around the phase transition temperature. The frequency dependence of conductivity was interpreted in terms of the jump relaxation model and was fitted to the double power law. (C) 2010 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

Studies of ZrO2 films prepared by d.c. reactive magnetron sputtering are described. The effects of substrate temperature on the packing density, refractive index, extinction coefficient and crystallinity phase have been investigated in the temperature range 25–450 °C. The refractive index varied from 1.84 to 1.95 and extinction coefficient from 2 × 10−3 to 9.6 × 10−3. This was explained on the basis of an increase in packing density from 0.686 to 0.813. The change in packing density has been attributed to a decrease in the oxygen condensation at higher temperatures. Annealing results in a decrease in refractive index and increase in extinction coefficient. The films deposited at 150 °C showed a monoclinic phase which transforms to a tetragonal phase at higher substrate temperatures.
Size dependence of the bulk modulus of semiconductor nanocrystals from first-principles calculations
Resumo:
The variation in the bulk modulus of semiconductor nanoparticles has been studied within first-principles electronic-structure calculations using the local density approximation (LDA) for the exchange correlation. Quantum Monte Carlo calculations carried out for a silicon nanocrystal Si87H76 provided reasonable agreement with the LDA results. An enhancement was observed in the bulk modulus as the size of the nanoparticle was decreased, with modest enhancements being predicted for the largest nanoparticles studied here, a size just accessible in experiments. To access larger sizes, we fit our calculated bulk moduli to the same empirical law for all materials, the asymptote of which is the bulk value of the modulus. This was found to be within 2-10% of the independently calculated value. The origin of the enhancement has been discussed in terms of Cohen's empirical law M.L. Cohen, Phys. Rev. B 32, 7988 (1985)] as well as other possible scenarios.

Influence of succinonitrile (SN) dynamics on ion transport in SN-lithium perchlorate (LiClO4) electrolytes is discussed here via dielectric relaxation spectroscopy. Dielectric relaxation spectroscopy (similar to 2 x 10(-3) Hz to 3 MHz) of SN and SN-LiClO4 was studied as a function of salt content (up to 7 mol % or 1 M) and temperature (-20 to +60 degrees C). Analyses of real and imaginary parts of permittivity convincingly reveal the influence Of trans gauche isomerism and solvent-salt association (solvation) effects on ion transport. The relaxation processes are highly dependent on the salt concentration and temperature. While pristine SN display only intrinsic dynamics (i.e., trans-gauche isomerism) which enhances with an increase in temperature, SN-LiClO4 electrolytes especially at high salt concentrations (similar to 0.04-1 M) show salt-induced relaxation processes. In the concentrated electrolytes, the intrinsic dynamics was observed to be a function of salt content, becoming faster with an increase in salt concentration. Deconvolution of the imaginary part of the permittivity spectra using Havriliak-Negami (HN) function show a relaxation process corresponding to the above phenomena. The permittivity data analyzed using HN and Kohlrausch-Williams-Watta (KWW) functions show non-Debye relaxation processes and enhancement in the trans phase (enhanced solvent dynamics) as a function of salt concentration and temperature.
