The formal charge distributions in and the dipole moments of some organophosphines and arsines have been calculated, and the dipole moments of (p-chlorophenyl)dichlorophosphine (2.28 D) and (p-bromophenyl)dichlorophosphine (2.04 D) have been determined in benzene at 35° C. The differences between the observed and the calculated moments are explained in terms of dπ---pπ back-bonding and hyperconjugative effects in alkylhaloarsines. The mesomeric effects operating in the aromatic systems are evaluated by comparing the moments with those for the corresponding aliphatic systems. In unsaturated compounds the differences are attributed to mesomeric effects involving the expansion of arsenic valence shell.

Analysis of the 1H NMR spectra of several monothiocarbonohydrazones, some of them synthesized for the first time, shows that they exist as two structural isomers. Whereas, in general, the derivatives of aromatic aldehydes conform to a linear structure, the aliphatic carbonyl derivatives conform to heterocyclic or linear structures, depending on the size of the substituent groups. This dual behaviour is explained in terms of extended conjugation and steric hindrance.

Carbon particles synthesized by acetylene pyrolysis in a porous graphite reactor have been investigated. The intimate chemical and physical structures of the particles were probed by proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. The analysis points towards a chemical structure composed of soluble low-mass aromatics surrounding small insoluble larger aromatic islands bridged by aliphatic groups. The diffraction profile indicates that the particles are mostly amorphous with small crystalline domains of not, vert, similar6.5 Å composed of a few stacked graphene layers. The properties of these particles are compared with these obtained with other types of production methods such as laser pyrolysis and combustion flames. The results are briefly discussed in the context of the evolution of infrared interstellar emitters. Possible uses of the reactor are proposed.

Sensing characteristics of few-layer graphenes for NO2 and humidity have been investigated with graphene samples prepared by the thermal exfoliation of graphitic oxide, conversion of nanodiamond (DG) and arc-discharge of graphite in hydrogen (HG). The sensitivity for NO2 is found to be highest with DG. Nitrogen-doped HG (n-type) shows increased sensitivity for NO2 compared with pure HG. The highest sensitivity for humidity is observed with HG. Sensing characteristics of graphene have been examined for different aliphatic alcohols and the sensitivity is found to vary with the chain length and branching.

A solvothermal reaction of ZnO, boric acid (B(OH)(3)), and aliphatic airlines in a water-pyridine mixture gave four zinc borate phases of different dimensionalities: [Zn(B4O8H2)(C3H10N2)], I (one-dimensional); [Zn(B4O8H2)(C3H10N2)] H2O, II (two-dimensional); [Zn(B5O10H3)(C10H24N4)]center dot H2O, III (two-dimensional): and [Zn-2(B8O15H2)(C3H10N2)(2)], IV (three-dimensional). The structures are formed by the connectivity involving polyborate chains and layers with Zn2+ species. In all the compounds, the amine molecules act its file ligand binding either the same or different zn centers. The formation of two different structures, II and IV, from the same amine by varying the reaction time is noteworthy. Transformation studies on II indicate that the formation of IV. from II, is facile and has been investigated for the first time. Two of file compounds, I and III, exhibit activity for second-order nonlinear optical behavior. The UV exposure of the sample indicates the absorption of all the UV radiation suggesting that the zinc borate compounds could be exploited for UV-blocking applications. The compounds have been characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, UV-vis, photoluminescence, and NMR studies.

2-Phenylthiazolin-5-one (2b) was generated in situ and condensed with various aldehydes in CH2Cl2 (r.t./20 min.), to obtain the corresponding 4-alkylidene or arylidene products in good yields (68-81%). The reaction is catalyzed by basic lead acetate, and is equally successful with both aliphatic and aromatic aldehydes. This mild version of the classical Erlenmeyer azlactone synthesis is apparently enabled by the enhanced aromaticity of the thioazlactone anion intermediate.

Aurora kinases are essential for chromosomal segregation and cell division and thereby important for maintaining the proper genomic integrity. There are three classes of aurora kinases in humans: A, B, and C. Aurora kinase A is frequently overexpressed in various cancers. The link of the overexpression and tumorigenesis is yet to be understood. By employing virtual screening, we have found that anacardic acid, a pentadecane aliphatic chain containing hydroxylcarboxylic acid, from cashew nut shell liquid could be docked in Aurora kinases A and B. Remarkably, we found that anacardic acid could potently activate the Aurora kinase A mediated phosphorylation of histone H3, but at a similar concentration the activity of aurora kinase B remained unaffected in vitro. Mechanistically, anacardic acid induces the structural changes and also the autophosphorylation of the aurora kinase A to enhance the enzyme activity. This data thus indicate anacardic acid as the first small-molecule activator of Aurora kinase, which could be highly useful for probing the function of hyperactive (overexpressed) Aurora kinase A.

An efficient method for the synthesis of symmetrical and unsymmetrical substituted thiourea derivatives by means of simple condensation between available building blocks such Lis airlines and carbon disulfide in aqueous medium is presented. This protocol works smoothly with aliphatic primary amines to afford various di- and trisubstituted thiourea derivatives. The present method is also useful ill synthesizing various substituted 2-mercapto imidazole heterocycles. This method proceeds through a xanthate (amino dithiol deivative) intermediate, unlike isothiocyanate as in all earlier known method.

This article describes two-component charge-transfer interaction mediated organogels (CT-gels) derived from anthracene carboxamides obtained from 2-amino 2-hydroxymethyl-1,3-propanediol (TRIS), and 2,3-dialkoxyanthracenes as donors, with 2,4,7-trinitrofluorenone (TNF) as the common acceptor. We demonstrate the versatility of TNF as an electron acceptor in the formation of these gels. The effect of subtle changes in the donor structure on the gelation ability has been investigated by varying the alkyl chain length in the dialkoxyanthracene donors, and by varying the position of the TRIS substituent in the anthracene carboxamide donors. Distinct differences have been observed in the nature of the CT-gels based on these two kinds of anthracene donors. It has been reported in the literature that 2,3-dialkoxyanthracenes form gels on their own in various aliphatic hydrocarbons and alcohols for linear alkyl chains bearing at least 6mcarbon atoms (C-6). In the present study, it is shown that themCT-complex of these molecules with TNF is able to gel many alcoholic and a few hydrocarbon solvents. Also, in the presence of TNF, the 2,3-dialkoxyanthracenes (C-4-C-5) which were non-gelators on their own at ambient temperatures, form CT-gels in a number of alcohols. The other series of gelators discussed, the anthracene carboxamides, require the mandatory presence of TNF to form gels. This donor-acceptor complex forms gels in various aliphatic alcohols. Interestingly, the formation of these CT-gels requires rapid cooling in most of the cases. Thermal stability studies with both types of CT-gels indicate an optimum stoichiometry of 1 : 1 between the donor and the acceptor. Dynamic rheological experiments reveal these gels as viscoelastic soft materials, with the mechanical strength of these gels depending on the amount of TNF present. This provides a means to tune the strength of the gel by varying the doping concentration of the acceptor.

A series of molecular complexes, both co-crystals and salts, of a triazole drug-alprazolam-with carboxylic acids, boric acid, boronic acids, and phenols have been analyzed with respect to heterosynthons present in the crystal structures. In all cases, the triazole ring behaves as an efficient hydrogen bond acceptor with the acidic coformers. The hydrogen bond patterns exhibited with aromatic carboxylic acids were found to depend on the nature and position of the substituents. Being a strong acid, 2,6-dihydroxybenzoic acid forms a salt with alprazolam. With aliphatic dicarboxylic acids alprazolam forms hydrates and the water molecules play a central role in synthon formation and crystal packing. The triazole ring makes two distinct heterosynthons in the molecular complex with boric acid. Boronic acids and phenols form consistent hydrogen bond patterns, and these are seemingly independent of the substitutional effects. Boronic acids form noncentrosymmetric cyclic synthons, while phenols form O-H center dot center dot center dot N hydrogen bonds with the triazole ring. Reactions of [PdIVB-(AI)2]++ [PdIICl4]-- (i) B-(AI)2 = dianion of N,N'-ethylene-/i-propylene-/n-propylene-bis(acetyl-acetoneimine) with some π-acceptor ligands, aliphatic primary amines and nitrosating reagents have been investigated. In all these reactions except nitrosation, 1:1 adducts having the formula, [PdIVB-(AI)2.X] [PdIICl4] [X = triphenylphosphine (TPP), triphenylarsine (TPA), pyridine (Py), methylamine (CH3NH2) or ethylamine (C2H5NH2)] are obtained. The formation of these complexes is associated with a bond isomerization - from Pd-Cxo-π -allylic bond prevailing in [PdIVB-(AI)2]2+ to PdIV-O bonding.Reaction of (i) with nitrosating reagents reduces PdIV to PdII and subsequently transform the γ-CH group, into an ambidentate isonitroso group (°C = NOH). The latter enters into coordination with PdII by dislodging the already coordinated carbonyl group. Further, selective nitrosation (mono- and dinitrosation) has been carried out by controlling the amount of the nitrosating reagent and the reaction time. The complexes have been characterized by elemental analyses, electrical conductivity, magnetic susceptibility and ir spectral data.
