Low cycle fatigue behavior of an O+B2 alloy was evaluated at 650 degrees C in ambient atmosphere under fully reversed total axial strain controlled mode. Three different microstructures, namely equiaxed O plus aged B2 (fine O plates in B2 matrix), lenticular O laths plus aged B2 and a pancake composite microstructure comprising equiaxed alpha 2, lenticular O and aged B2, were selected to study the effect of microstructure on low cycle fatigue behavior in this class of alloys. Distinct well-defined trends were observed in the cyclic stress-strain response curves depending on the microstructure. The cyclic stress response was examined in terms of softening or hardening and correlated with microstructural features and dislocation behavior. Fatigue life was analyzed in terms of standard Coffin-Manson and Basquin plots and for all microstructures a prevailing elastic strain regime was identified, with a single slope for microstructures equiaxed and composite and a double slope for lenticular O laths. Current methods for molecular simulations of Electric Double Layer Capacitors (EDLC) have both the electrodes and the electrolyte region in a single simulation box. This necessitates simulation of the electrode-electrolyte region interface. Typical capacitors have macroscopic dimensions where the fraction of the molecules at the electrode-electrolyte region interface is very low. Hence, large systems sizes are needed to minimize the electrode-electrolyte region interfacial effects. To overcome these problems, a new technique based on the Gibbs Ensemble is proposed for simulation of an EDLC. In the proposed technique, each electrode is simulated in a separate simulation box. Application of periodic boundary conditions eliminates the interfacial effects. This in addition to the use of constant voltage ensemble allows for a more convenient comparison of simulation results with experimental measurements on typical EDLCs. (C) 2014 AIP Publishing LLC.

Using the numerical device simulation we show that the relationship between the surface potentials along the channel in any double gate (DG) MOSFET remains invariant in QS (quasistatic) and NQS (nonquasi-static) condition for the same terminal voltages. This concept along with the recently proposed `piecewise charge linearization' technique is then used to develop the intrinsic NQS charge model for a Independent DG (IDG) MOSFET by solving the governing continuity equation. It is also demonstrated that unlike the usual MOSFET transcapacitances, the inter-gate transcapacitance of a IDG-MOSFET initially increases with the frequency and then saturates, which might find novel analog circuit application. The proposed NQS model shows good agreement with numerical device simulations and appears to be useful for efficient circuit simulation.
Coconut kernel-derived activated carbon as electrode material for electrical double-layer capacitors
Resumo:
Carbonization of milk-free coconut kernel pulp is carried out at low temperatures. The carbon samples are activated using KOH, and electrical double-layer capacitor (EDLC) properties are studied. Among the several samples prepared, activated carbon prepared at 600 A degrees C has a large surface area (1,200 m(2) g(-1)). There is a decrease in surface area with increasing temperature of preparation. Cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic charge-discharge studies suggest that activated carbons derived from coconut kernel pulp are appropriate materials for EDLC studies in acidic, alkaline, and non-aqueous electrolytes. Specific capacitance of 173 F g(-1) is obtained in 1 M H2SO4 electrolyte for the activated carbon prepared at 600 A degrees C. The supercapacitor properties of activated carbon sample prepared at 600 A degrees C are superior to the samples prepared at higher temperatures.

A new NMR experiment that exploits the advantages of proton double quantum (DQ) NMR through a proton DQ-carbon single quantum (SQ) correlation experiment in the solid state is proposed. Analogous to the previously proposed 2D H-1 (DQ)-C-13 refocused INEPT experiment (Webber et al., 2010), the correlation between H-1 and C-13 is achieved through scalar coupling evolution, while the double quantum coherence among protons is generated through dipolar couplings. However, the new experiment relies on C-13 transverse coherence for scalar transfer. The new experiment dubbed MAS-J-H-1 (DQ)-C-13-HMQC, is particularly suited for unlabeled molecules and can provide higher sensitivity than its INEPT counterpart. The experiment is applied to four different samples. (C) 2014 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

This is a transient two-dimensional numerical study of double-diffusive salt fingers in a two-layer heat-salt system for a wide range of initial density stability ratio (R-rho 0) and thermal Rayleigh numbers (Ra-T similar to 10(3) - 10(11)). Salt fingers have been studied for several decades now, but several perplexing features of this rich and complex system remain unexplained. The work in question studies this problem and shows the morphological variation in fingers from low to high thermal Rayleigh numbers, which have been missed by the previous investigators. Considerable variations in convective structures and evolution pattern were observed in the range of Ra-T used in the simulation. Evolution of salt fingers was studied by monitoring the finger structures, kinetic energy, vertical profiles, velocity fields, and transient variation of R-rho(t). The results show that large scale convection that limits the finger length was observed only at high Rayleigh numbers. The transition from nonlinear to linear convection occurs at about Ra-T similar to 10(8). Contrary to the popular notion, R-rho(t) first decrease during diffusion before the onset time and then increase when convection begins at the interface. Decrease in R-rho(t) is substantial at low Ra-T and it decreases even below unity resulting in overturning of the system. Interestingly, all the finger system passes through the same state before the onset of convection irrespective of Rayleigh number and density stability ratio of the system. Sessile droplets on a vibrating substrate are investigated focusing on axisymmetric oscillations with pinned contact line. Proper orthogonal decomposition is employed to identify the different modes of droplet shape oscillation and quantitatively assess the droplet oscillation and spectral response. We offer the first experimental evidence for the analogy of an oscillating sessile droplet with a non-linear spring mass damper system. The qualitative and quantitative agreement of amplitude response and phase response curves and limit cycles of the model dynamical system with that observed experimentally suggest that the bulk oscillations in the fundamental mode of a sessile droplet can be very well modeled by a Duffing oscillator with a hard spring, especially near the resonance. The red shift of the resonance peak with an increase in the glycerol concentration is clearly evidenced by both the experimental and predicted amplitude response curves. The influence of various operational parameters such as excitation frequency and amplitude and fluid properties on the droplet oscillation characteristics is adequately captured by the model. In a double slit interference experiment, the wave function at the screen with both slits open is not exactly equal to the sum of the wave functions with the slits individually open one at a time. The three scenarios represent three different boundary conditions and as such, the superposition principle should not be applicable. However, most well-known text books in quantum mechanics implicitly and/or explicitly use this assumption that is only approximately true. In our present study, we have used the Feynman path integral formalism to quantify contributions from nonclassical paths in quantum interference experiments that provide a measurable deviation from a naive application of the superposition principle. A direct experimental demonstration for the existence of these nonclassical paths is difficult to present. We find that contributions from such paths can be significant and we propose simple three-slit interference experiments to directly confirm their existence.

Existing compact models for common double-gate (CDG) MOSFETs are based on the fundamental assumption of having symmetric gate oxide thickness. In this paper, we demonstrate that using the unique quasi-linear relationship between the surface potentials, it is possible to develop compact model for CDG-MOSFETs without such approximation while preserving the mathematical complexity at the same level of the existing models. In the proposed model, the surface potential relationship is used to include the drain-induced barrier lowering, channel length modulation, velocity saturation, and quantum mechanical effect in the long-channel model and good agreement is observed with the technology computer aided design simulation results.

The occurrence of spurious solutions is a well-known limitation of the standard nodal finite element method when applied to electromagnetic problems. The two commonly used remedies that are used to address this problem are (i) The addition of a penalty term with the penalty factor based on the local dielectric constant, and which reduces to a Helmholtz form on homogeneous domains (regularized formulation); (ii) A formulation based on a vector and a scalar potential. Both these strategies have some shortcomings. The penalty method does not completely get rid of the spurious modes, and both methods are incapable of predicting singular eigenvalues in non-convex domains. Some non-zero spurious eigenvalues are also predicted by these methods on non-convex domains. In this work, we develop mixed finite element formulations which predict the eigenfrequencies (including their multiplicities) accurately, even for nonconvex domains. The main feature of the proposed mixed finite element formulation is that no ad-hoc terms are added to the formulation as in the penalty formulation, and the improvement is achieved purely by an appropriate choice of finite element spaces for the different variables. We show that the formulation works even for inhomogeneous domains where `double noding' is used to enforce the appropriate continuity requirements at an interface. For two-dimensional problems, the shape of the domain can be arbitrary, while for the three-dimensional ones, with our current formulation, only regular domains (which can be nonconvex) can be modeled. Since eigenfrequencies are modeled accurately, these elements also yield accurate results for driven problems. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

We develop the formalism of quantum mechanics on three-dimensional fuzzy space and solve the Schrodinger equation for the free particle, finite and infinite fuzzy wells. We show that all results reduce to the appropriate commutative limits. A high energy cut-off is found for the free particle spectrum, which also results in the modification of the high energy dispersion relation. An ultra-violet/infra-red duality is manifest in the free particle spectrum. The finite well also has an upper bound on the possible energy eigenvalues. The phase shifts due to scattering around the finite fuzzy potential well are calculated.

A new generalized model predictive static programming technique is presented for rapidly solving a class of finite-horizon nonlinear optimal control problems with hard terminal constraints. Two key features for its high computational efficiency include one-time backward integration of a small-dimensional weighting matrix dynamics, followed bya static optimization formulation that requires only a static Lagrange multiplier to update the control history. It turns out that under Euler integration and rectangular approximation of finite integrals it is equivalent to the existing model predictive static programming technique. In addition to the benchmark double integrator problem, usefulness of the proposed technique is demonstrated by solving a three-dimensional angle-constrained guidance problem for an air-to-ground missile, which demands that the missile must meet constraints on both azimuth and elevation angles at the impact point in addition to achieving near-zero miss distance, while minimizing the lateral acceleration demand throughout its flight path. Simulation studies include maneuvering ground targets along with a first-order autopilot lag. Comparison studies with classical augmented proportional navigation guidance and modern general explicit guidance lead to the conclusion that the proposed guidance is superior to both and has a larger capture region as well.

Doubly (Sn + F) doped zinc oxide (ZnO:Sn:F) thin films were deposited onto glass substrates using a simplified spray pyrolysis technique. The deposited films were annealed at 400 degrees C under two different ambiences (air and vacuum) for 2 h. The photocatalytic activity of these films was assessed through photocatalytic decolorization kinetics of Methylene Blue (MB) dye and the decolorization efficiency of the annealed films was compared with that of their as-deposited counterpart. The photocatalytic studies reveal that the ZnO:Sn:F films annealed under vacuum environment exhibits better photocatalytic efficiency when compared with both air annealed and as-deposited films. The SEM and TEM images depict that the surface of each of the films has an overlayer comprising of nanobars formed on a bottom layer, having spherical grains. The studies show that the diameter of the nanobars plays crucial role in enhancing the photocatalytic activity of the ZnO:Sn:F films. The structural, optical and electrical studies substantiate the discussions on the photocatalytic ability of the deposited films. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The concurrent planning of sequential saccades offers a simple model to study the nature of visuomotor transformations since the second saccade vector needs to be remapped to foveate the second target following the first saccade. Remapping is thought to occur through egocentric mechanisms involving an efference copy of the first saccade that is available around the time of its onset. In contrast, an exocentric representation of the second target relative to the first target, if available, can be used to directly code the second saccade vector. While human volunteers performed a modified double-step task, we examined the role of exocentric encoding in concurrent saccade planning by shifting the first target location well before the efference copy could be used by the oculomotor system. The impact of the first target shift on concurrent processing was tested by examining the end-points of second saccades following a shift of the second target during the first saccade. The frequency of second saccades to the old versus new location of the second target, as well as the propagation of first saccade localization errors, both indices of concurrent processing, were found to be significantly reduced in trials with the first target shift compared to those without it. A similar decrease in concurrent processing was obtained when we shifted the first target but kept constant the second saccade vector. Overall, these results suggest that the brain can use relatively stable visual landmarks, independent of efference copy-based egocentric mechanisms, for concurrent planning of sequential saccades.

Lead-carbon hybrid ultracapacitors comprise positive lead dioxide plates of the lead-acid battery and negative plates of carbon-based electrical double-layer capacitors (EDLCs). Accordingly, a lead-carbon hybrid ultracapacitor has the features of both the battery and that of an EDLC. In this study, the development and performance comparison between the two types of lead-carbon hybrid ultracapacitors, namely those with substrate-integrated and conventional pasted positive plates, is presented as such a study is lacking in the literature. The study suggests that the faradaic efficiencies for both types of lead-carbon hybrid ultracapacitors are comparable. However, their capacitance values as well as energy and power densities differ significantly. For substrate-integrated positive plate hybrid ultracapacitor, capacitance and energy density values are lower, but power density values are higher than pasted positive plate lead-carbon hybrid ultracapacitors due to their shorter response time. Accordingly, internal resistance values are also lower for substrate-integrated lead-carbon hybrid ultracapacitors. Both types of lead-carbon hybrid ultracapacitors exhibit good cycle life of 100,000 pulse charge-discharge cycles with only a nominal loss in their capacitance values.
