In the title compound, C(15)H(13)ClO(3)S, the chlorothiophene and dimethoxyphenyl groups are linked by a prop-2-en-1-one group. The C=C double bond exhibits an E conformation. The molecule is non-planar, with a dihedral angle of 31.12 (5)degrees between the chlorothiophene and dimethoxyphenyl rings. The methoxy group at position 3 is coplanar with the benzene ring to which it is attached, with a C-O-C-C torsion angle of -3.8 (3)degrees. The methoxy group attached at position 2 of the benzene ring is in a (+)synclinal conformation, as indicated by the C-O-C-C torsion angle of -73.6 (2)degrees. In the crystal, two different C-H center dot center dot center dot O intermolecular interactions generate chains of molecules extending along the b axis.

Solubilities of common metal sulfides have been determined in the (NaCl+KCl) eutectic melt with and without Na2S. A novel gas-phase equilibrium technique has been used for PbS, Bi2S3, and So2S3, and an improved liquid phase equilibrium technique for Cu2S, which eliminates the errors due to physical entrapment of the sulfide phase and segregation on quenching, enabling precise measurements to be made. Solubilities in the (NaCl+KCl) eutectic melt were determined as a function of temperature in the rante 700° to 950°C, and were found to be small. The partial molar heats of mixing of the sulfides in the eutectic melt have been calculated from the solubility measurements, to be 13.3, 31.4, 37.1, and 49.0 kcal for PbSs), Sb2S2(l), and Cu2S(s), respectively. Sodium sulfide addition was observed to enhance these solubilities, the effect being largest for Cu2S followed by Sb2S3, Bi2S3, and PbS. This effect is explained qualitatively. It was observed that PbS and Sb2S3 obey Henry's law up to saturation in (NaCl+KCl+Na2S) melts.

Compositionally varying multilayers of (1−x) Pb(Mg1/3N2/3)O3–(x) PbTiO3 were fabricated using pulsed laser ablation technique. An antiferroelectriclike polarization hysteresis was observed in these relaxor based multilayer systems. The competition among the intrinsic ferroelectric coupling in the relaxor ferroelectrics and the antiferroelectric coupling among the dipoles at the interface gives rise to an antiferroelectriclike polarization behavior. An increment in the coercive field and the applied field corresponding to the polarization flipping at low temperatures, provide further insight on the competition among the long-range ferroelectric interaction and the interfacial interaction in the polarization behavior of these relaxor multilayers.

We describe a blue/green inorganic material, Ba(3)(P(1-x)-Mn(x)O(4))(2) (I) based on tetrahedral MnO(4)(3-):3d(2) chromophore. The solid solutions (I) which are sky-blue and turquoise-blue for x <= 0.25 and dark green for x >= 0-50, are readily synthesized in air from commonly available starting materials, stabilizing the MnO(4)(3-) chromophore in an isostructural phosphate host. We suggest that the covalency/ionicity of P-O/Mn-O bonds in the solid solutions tunes the crystal field strength around Mn(V) such that a blue colour results for materials with small values of x. The material could serve as a nontoxic blue/green inorganic pigment.

A series of novel 2-(4-(2,4-dimethoxybenzoyl)phenoxy)-1-(4-(3-(piperidin-4-yl)propyl) piperidin-1-yl)ethanone derivatives 9(ae) and 10(ag) were synthesized and characterized by 1H NMR, IR, mass spectral, and elemental analysis. These novel compounds were evaluated for their antileukemic activity against two human leukemic cell lines (K562 and CEM) by using the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazoliumbromide assay. Some of the tested compounds showed good antiproliferative activity with IC50 values ranging from 1.6 to 8.0 mu m. Compound 9c, 9e, and 10f with an electron-withdrawing halogen substituent at the para position on the phenyl ring showed excellent in vitro potency against tested human leukemia cells (K562 and CEM).

3-(2,3-Dimethoxyphenyl)-1-(pyridin-2-yl)prop-2-en-1-one (DMPP) a potential second harmonic generating (SHG) has been synthesized and grown as a single crystal by the slow evaporation technique at ambient temperature. The structure determination of the grown crystal was done by single crystal X-ray diffraction study. DMPP crystallizes with orthorhombic system with cell parameters a = 20.3106(8)angstrom, b = 4.9574(2)angstrom, c = 13.4863(5)angstrom, alpha = 90 degrees, beta = 90 degrees, gamma = 90 degrees and space group Pca2(1). The crystals were characterized by FT-IR, thermal analysis, UV-vis-NIR spectroscopy and SHG measurements. Various functional groups present in DMPP were ascertained by FTIR analysis. DMPP is thermally stable up to 80 degrees C and optically transparent in the visible region. The crystal exhibits SHG efficiency comparable to that of KDP. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. In the present study, we have tested the cytotoxic and DNA damage activity of two novel bis-1,2,4 triazole derivatives, namely 1,4-bis[5-(5-mercapto-1,3,4-oxadiazol-2-yl-methyl)-thio4-(p-tolyl)-1,2 ,4-triazol-3-yl]-butane (MNP-14) and 1,4-bis[5-(carbethoxy-methyl)-thio-4-(p-ethoxy phenyl) -1,2,4-triazol-3-yl]-butane (MNP-16). The effect of these molecules on cellular apoptosis was also determined. The in-vitro cytotoxicity was evaluated by a 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay as well as Trypan blue dye exclusion methods against human acute lymphoblastic leukemia (MOLT4) and lung cancer cells (A549). Our results showed that MNP-16 induced significant cytotoxicity (IC50 of 3-5 mu M) compared with MNP-14. The cytotoxicity induced by MNP-16 was time and concentration dependent. The cell cycle analysis by flow cytometry (fluorescence-activated cell sorting [FACS]) revealed that though there was a significant increase in the apoptotic population (sub-G1 phase) with an increased concentration of MNP-14 and 16, there was no cell cycle arrest. Further, the comet assay results indicated considerable DNA

Ligand-induced stabilization of G-quadruplex structures formed by the human telomeric DNA is an active area of research. The compounds which stabilize the G-quadruplexes often lead to telomerase inhibition. Herein we present the results of interaction of new monomeric and dimeric ligands having 1,3-phenylene-bis(piperazinyl benzimidazole) unit with G-quadruplex DNA (G4DNA) formed by human telomeric repeat d(G(3)T(2)A)(3)G(3)]. These ligands efficiently stabilize the preformed G4DNA in the presence of 100 mM monovalent alkali metal ions. Also, the G4DNA formed in the presence of low concentrations of ligands in 100 mM K+ adopts a highly stable parallel-stranded conformation. The G-quadruplexes formed in the presence of the dimeric compound are more stable than that induced by the corresponding monomeric counterpart. The dimeric ligands having oligo-oxyethylene spacers provide much higher stability to the preformed G4DNA and also exert significantly higher telomerase inhibition activity. Computational aspects have also been discussed.

Four new 2-oxo-1,2-dihydrobenzoh]quinoline-3-carbaldehyde N-substituted thiosemicarbazone ligands (H-2-LR, where R = H, Me, Et or Ph) and their corresponding new cobalt(III) complexes have been synthesized and characterized. The structures of the complexes 2 and 3 were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The interactions of the new complexes with DNA were investigated by absorption, emission and viscosity studies which indicated that the complexes bind to DNA via intercalation. Antioxidant studies of the new complexes showed that the significant antioxidant activity against DPPH radical. In addition, the in vitro cytotoxicity of complexes 1-4 against A549 cell line was assayed which showed higher cytotoxic activity with lower IC50 values indicating their efficiency in killing the cancer cells even at very low concentrations.
