Infrared spectroscopy provides a valuable tool to investigate the spin-state transition in Fe(II) complexes of the type Fe(Phen)2(NCS)2. With progressive substitution of Fe by Mn, the first-order transition changes over to a second-order transition, with a high residual population of the high-spin state even at very low temperatures

For a population made up of individuals capable of sexual as well as asexual modes of reproduction, conditions for the spread of a transposable element are explored using a one-locus, two-haplotype model. The analysis is then extended to include the possibility that the transposable element can modulate the probability of sexual reproduction, thus casting Hickey’s (1982,Genetics 101: 519–531) suggestion in a population genetics framework. The model explicitly includes the cost of sexual reproduction, fitness disadvantage to the transposable element, probability of transposition, and the predisposition for sexual reproduction in the presence and absence of the transposable element. The model predicts several kinds of outcome, including initial frequency dependence and stable polymorphism. More importantly, it is seen that for a wide range of parameter values, the transposable element can go to fixation. Therefore it is able to convert the population from a predominantly asexual to a predominantly sexual mode of reproduction. Viewed in conjunction with recent results implicating short stretches of apparently non-coding DNA in sex determination (McCoubreyet al. 1988,Science 242: 1146–1151), the model hints at the important role this mechanism could have played in the evolution of sexuality.

We explore three possible pathways for the evolution of genomic imprinting. (1) Imprinting may be advantageous in itself when imprinted and unimprinted alleles of a locus confer different phenotypes. If a segment of DNA is imprinted in the gametes of one sex but not in those of the other, it might lead to effects correlated with sexual dimorphism. More fundamentally, in certain organisms, sex determination might have evolved because of imprinting. When imprinting leads to chromosome elimination or inactivation and occurs in some embryos but not in others, two classes of embryos, differing in the number of functional gene copies, would result. A model for sex determination based on inequality in the actual or effective copy-number of particular noncoding, regulatory sequences of DNA has been proposed (Chandra, Proc. natn. Acad. Sci. U.S.A. 82. 1165–1169 and 6947–6949, 1985). Maternal control of offspring sex is another possible consequence of imprinting; this would indicate a potential role for imprinting in sex ratio evolution. (2) Genes responsible for imprinting may have pleiotropic effects and they may have been selected for reasons other than their imprinting ability. Lack of evidence precludes further consideration of this possibility. (3) Imprinting could have co-evolved with other traits. For instance, gamete-specific imprinting could lead to a lowered fitness of androgenetic or gynogenetic diploids relative to the fitness of ‘normal’ diploids. This in turn would reinforce the evolution of anisogamy. The reversibility of imprinting raises the possibility of occasional incomplete or improper erasure. If the site of imprinting is the egg – as appears to be the case with the human X (Chandra and Brown, Nature 253. 165–168, 1975) – either improper imprinting or improper erasure could lead to unusual patterns of inheritance (as in the fragile-X syndrome) or fitness effects skipping generations.

Raman induced phase conjugation (RIPC) spectroscopy is a relatively new coherent Raman spectroscopic (CRS) technique using optical phase conjugation (OPC), with which complete Raman spectra of transparent media can be obtained. It is a non-degenerate four-wave mixing technique in which two pulsed laser beams at Ω1 and Ω1 ± Δ where A corresponds to a vibrational frequency of a nonlinear medium mix with a third laser beam at Ω1 to generate a fourth beam Ω1 ± Δ, which is nearly phase conjugate to one of the beams at Ω1. With this technique one can measure the ratio of the resonant and nonresonant components of the third-order nonlinear susceptibilities of the nonlinear media. We have used this technique to get Raman spectra of well-known organic solvents like benzene etc., using pulsed Nd: YAG -dye laser systems. We have also studied the effect of delaying one of the interacting beams with respect to the others and the phase conjugate property of RIPC signals.

Female bonnet monkeys were injected i.v. with 25 µl antiserum to FSH on Days 5, 6 or 7 of the cycle: the length of the luteal phase was shortened but there was no alteration in cycle length. Proven fertile females (N = 6) were caged throughout the period of the experiment (6 cycles) with proven fertile males and treated with 25 µl FSH antiserum on Day 7 of each of 3 successive cycles. Out of 18 cycle exposures during the treatment phase, 17 were ovulatory, but no pregnancies occurred. In the post-treatment phase, 5 monkeys became pregnant within 3 cycle exposures. These results show that it is possible to render female monkeys infertile by creating luteal insufficiency and this can be achieved repeatedly in a reproducible manner by depriving the cyclic females of FSH support on Day 7 of consecutive cycles.

The subcutaneous administration of methyl isocyanate (MIC) to female rabbits, resulted in significant increases in haemoglobin concentration, erythrocyte volume fraction and leucocyte number in blood, as well as plasma total proteins, and urea. The present study was designed to investigate whether the hydrolytic products of MIC, methylamine (MA) and N,N'-dimethylurea (DMU) play any role in eliciting these changes. Both MA and DMU administered subcutaneously in an equimolar dose to that of 1.0 LD50 MIC, 2.2 mmol kg-1, had no influence on these parameters, although there was a marginal increase in the plasma urea level shortly after the administration of DMU. This study establishes that the observed haematological and biochemical changes induced by MIC intoxication in rabbits are mostly due to MIC.

A hard roller under normal load is driven by the flat surface of a soft disc. Corrugations are generated on the disc when certain surface morphological, load, speed and mechanical property-oriented conditions are met. The evolutionary process of corrugation generation and the preconditions necessary for it are investigated morphologically and mechanically for four disc materials: mild steel, brass, PTFE and PMMA.

The protective effect of bacteriophage was assessed against experimental Staphylococcus aureus lethal bacteremia in streptozotocin (STZ) induced-diabetic and non-diabetic mice. Intraperitoneal administrations of S. aureus (RCS21) of 2 x 10(8) CFU caused lethal bacteremia in both diabetic and non-diabetic mice. A single administration of a newly isolated lytic phage strain (GRCS) significantly protected diabetic and nondiabetic mice from lethal bacteremia (survival rate 90% and 100% for diabetic and non-diabetic bacteremic groups versus 0% for saline-treated groups). Comparison of phage therapy to oxacillin treatment showed a significant decrease in RCS21 of 5 and 3 log units in diabetic and nondiabetic bacteremic mice, respectively. The same protection efficiency of phage GRCS was attained even when the treatment was delayed up to 4 h in both diabetic and non-diabetic bacteremic mice. Inoculation of mice with a high dose (10(10) PFU) of phage GRCS alone produced no adverse effects attributable to the phage per se. These results suggest that phages could constitute valuable prophylaxis against S. aureus infections, especially in immunocompromised patients. (C) 2010 Institut Pasteur. Potassamide induced in situ alkylation of 1-alkyl- 4-cyano-3-methoxy-5,6-dihydroisoquinolines (2a & 2b) with alkyl iodides (CH3I, CH3CH2I & cyclohexyl iodide) gave the 5-alkyl- and 5,9-dialkyl-5,6-dihydroisoquinolines (4–ad & 3a–e), isoquinoline derivatives, (5a–b) and diastereomeric mixture of 4- alkyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinolin-3(2H)-ones (6a–e & 6′a–e). Structures were assigned on the basis of spectral data [Mass, 1H & 13C NMR, 2D NOESY & HC-COLOC]. Amide induced in situ alkylation of compounds 3a and 4a with CH3I gave in almost quantitative yield the dimethylated compounds 3d and 3a respectively. While KNH2/liq.NH3 methylation of 1,2- dihydroisoquinoline, 1 with CH3I gave the mixture of compounds, 6a & 6′a and the isoquinoline derivative 5a, NaH/benzene reaction of 1 with CH3I gave exclusively 5a. N-methylation of the mixture of compounds 6a & 6′a with NaH/CH3I gave the methylated derivatives, 7 & 8. A suitable mechanism has been proposed for the formation of products.

Room-temperature Raman spectra of LiRbSO4 were studied as a function of pressure up to 170 kbar for two different orientations of the crystal. Four pressure-induced phase transitions at about 2, 17, 32 and 57 kbar were observed. The transitions at 17 and 57 kbar have slow kinetics, taking about 4 h for their completion. These phase transitions are associated with the orientations of the SO4 ions in the unit cell.

The preponderance of 3'-5' phosphodiester links in nucleic acids is well known. Albeit less prevalent, the 2'-5' links are specifically utilised in the formation of 'lariat' in group II introns and in the msDNA-RNA junction in myxobacterium. As a sequel to our earlier study on cytidylyl-2',5'-adenosine we have now obtained the crystal structure of adenylyl-2',5'-adenosine (A2'p5'A) at atomic resolution. This dinucleoside monophosphate crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group P2(1)2(1)2(1) with a = 7.956(3) A, b = 12.212(3) A and c = 36.654(3) A. CuK alpha intensity data were collected on a diffractometer. The structure was sloved by direct methods and refined by full matrix least squares methods to R = 10.8%. The 2' terminal adenine is in the commonly observed anti (chi 2 = 161 degrees) conformation and the 5' terminal base has a syn (chi 1 = 55 degrees) conformation more often seen in purine nucleotides. A noteworthy feature of A2'p5'A is the intranucleotide hydrogen bond between N3 and O5' atoms of the 5' adenine base. The two furanose rings in A2'p5'A show different conformations - C2' endo, C3' endo puckering for the 5' and 2' ends respectively. In this structure too there is a stacking of the purine base on the ribose O4' just as in other 2'-5' dinucleoside structures, a feature characteristically seen in the left handed Z DNA. In having syn, anti conformation about the glycosyl bonds, C2' endo, C3' endo mixed sugar puckering and N3-O5' intramolecular hydrogen bond A2'p5'A resembles its 3'-5' analogue and several other 2'-5' dinucleoside monophosphate structures solved so far. Striking similarities between the 2'-5' dinucleoside monophosphate structures suggest that the conformation of the 5'-end nucleoside dictates the conformation of the 2' end nucleoside. Also, the 2'-5' dimers do not favour formation of miniature classical double helical structures like the 3'-5' dimers. It is conceivable, 2-5(A) could be using the stereochemical features of A2'p5'A which accounts for its higher activity.
Evolution in the time series of vortex velocity fluctuations across different regimes of vortex flow
Resumo:
Investigations of vortex velocity fluctuation in time domain have revealed a presence of low frequency velocity fluctuations which evolve with the different driven phases of the vortex state in a single crystal of 2H-NbSe2. The observation of velocity fluctuations with a characteristic low frequency is associated with the onset of nonlinear nature of vortex flow deep in the driven elastic vortex state. We analyze theoretically the phenomenon of electromagnetically induced transparency (UT) under conditions where the probe laser is not in the usual weak limit. We consider the effects in both three-level and four-level systems, which are either closed or open (due to losses to an external metastable level). We find that the EIT dip almost disappears in a closed three-level system but survives in an open system. In four-level systems, there is a narrow enhanced-absorption peak (EITA) at line center, which has applications as an optical clock. The peak converts to an EIT dip in a closed system, but again survives in an open system. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The impedance of sealed nickel/cadmium cells around a cell e.m.f. of 0.0 V was measured at five different temperatures between 10 and +30 °C. The results show that the behaviour is similar at all temperatures. Based on the experimental results, the relation between charge-transfer resistance (Rct) and temperature (T) has been established for the Volmer reaction. Further, the value of cathodic transfer coefficient (?) has been estimated.
