Multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were decorated with crystalline zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) by wet chemical route to form MWCNT/ZnO NPs hybrid. The hybrid sample was characterized by scanning and transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Electrical conductivity of the hybrid can be tuned by varying the ZnO NPs content in the hybrid. In order to investigate the effect of nanoparticles loading on the conduction of MWCNTs network, electrical conductivity studies have been carried out in the wide temperature range 1.5-300K. The electrical conductivity of the hybrid below 100K is explained with the combination of variable range hopping conduction and thermal fluctuation induced tunnelling model. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. This paper presents a modified design method for linear transconductor circuit in 130 nm CMOS technology to improve linearity, robustness against process induced threshold voltage variability and reduce harmonic distortion. Source follower in the adaptively biased differential pair (ABDP) linear transconductor circuit is replaced with flipped voltage follower to improve the efficiency of the tail current source, which is connected to a conventional differential pair. The simulation results show the performance of the modified circuit also has better speed, noise performance and common mode rejection ratio compared to the ABDP circuit.

It is known that by employing space-time-frequency codes (STFCs) to frequency selective MIMO-OFDM systems, all the three diversity viz spatial, temporal and multipath can be exploited. There exists space-time-frequency block codes (STFBCs) designed using orthogonal designs with constellation precoder to get full diversity (Z.Liu, Y.Xin and G.Giannakis IEEE Trans. Signal Processing, Oct. 2002). Since orthogonal designs of rate one exists only for two transmit antennas, for more than two transmit antennas STFBCs of rate-one and full-diversity cannot be constructed using orthogonal designs. This paper presents a STFBC scheme of rate one for four transmit antennas designed using quasi-orthogonal designs along with co-ordinate interleaved orthogonal designs (Zafar Ali Khan and B. Sundar Rajan Proc: ISIT 2002). Conditions on the signal sets that give full-diversity are identified. Simulation results are presented to show the superiority of our codes over the existing ones.

This paper proposes a control method that can balance the input currents of the three-phase three-wire boost rectifier under unbalanced input voltage condition. The control objective is to operate the rectifier in the high-power-factor mode under balanced input voltage condition but to give overriding priority to the current balance function in case of unbalance in the input voltage. The control structure has been divided into two major functional blocks. The inner loop current-mode controller implements resistor emulation to achieve high-power-factor operation on each of the two orthogonal axes of the stationary reference frame. The outer control loop performs magnitude scaling and phase-shifting operations on current of one of the axes to make it balanced with the current on the other axis. The coefficients of scaling and shifting functions are determined by two closed-loop prportional-integral (PI) controllers that impose the conditions of input current balance as PI references. The control algorithm is simple and high performing. It does not require input voltage sensing and transformation of the control variables into a rotating reference frame. The simulation results on a MATLAB-SIMULINK platform validate the proposed control strategy. In implementation Texas Instrument's digital signal processor TMS320F24OF is used as the digital controller. The control algorithm for high-power-factor operation is tested on a prototype boost rectifier under nominal and unbalanced input voltage conditions.

The problem of constructing space-time (ST) block codes over a fixed, desired signal constellation is considered. In this situation, there is a tradeoff between the transmission rate as measured in constellation symbols per channel use and the transmit diversity gain achieved by the code. The transmit diversity is a measure of the rate of polynomial decay of pairwise error probability of the code with increase in the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). In the setting of a quasi-static channel model, let n(t) denote the number of transmit antennas and T the block interval. For any n(t) <= T, a unified construction of (n(t) x T) ST codes is provided here, for a class of signal constellations that includes the familiar pulse-amplitude (PAM), quadrature-amplitude (QAM), and 2(K)-ary phase-shift-keying (PSK) modulations as special cases. The construction is optimal as measured by the rate-diversity tradeoff and can achieve any given integer point on the rate-diversity tradeoff curve. An estimate of the coding gain realized is given. Other results presented here include i) an extension of the optimal unified construction to the multiple fading block case, ii) a version of the optimal unified construction in which the underlying binary block codes are replaced by trellis codes, iii) the providing of a linear dispersion form for the underlying binary block codes, iv) a Gray-mapped version of the unified construction, and v) a generalization of construction of the S-ary case corresponding to constellations of size S-K. Items ii) and iii) are aimed at simplifying the decoding of this class of ST codes.

In this brief, we present a new circuit technique to generate the sigmoid neuron activation function (NAF) and its derivative (DNAF). The circuit makes use of transistor asymmetry in cross-coupled differential pair to obtain the derivative. The asymmetry is introduced through external control signal, as and when required. This results in the efficient utilization of the hard-ware by realizing NAF and DNAF using the same building blocks. The operation of the circuit is presented in the subthreshold region for ultra low-power applications. The proposed circuit has been experimentally prototyped and characterized as a proof of concept on the 1.5-mum AMI technology.

A better performing product code vector quantization (VQ) method is proposed for coding the line spectrum frequency (LSF) parameters; the method is referred to as sequential split vector quantization (SeSVQ). The split sub-vectors of the full LSF vector are quantized in sequence and thus uses conditional distribution derived from the previous quantized sub-vectors. Unlike the traditional split vector quantization (SVQ) method, SeSVQ exploits the inter sub-vector correlation and thus provides improved rate-distortion performance, but at the expense of higher memory. We investigate the quantization performance of SeSVQ over traditional SVQ and transform domain split VQ (TrSVQ) methods. Compared to SVQ, SeSVQ saves 1 bit and nearly 3 bits, for telephone-band and wide-band speech coding applications respectively.

A new performance metric, Peak-Error Ratio (PER) has been presented to benchmark the performance of a class of neuron circuits to realize neuron activation function (NAF) and its derivative (DNAF). Neuron circuits, biased in subthreshold region, based on the asymmetric cross-coupled differential pair configuration and conventional configuration of applying small external offset voltage at the input have been compared on the basis of PER. It is shown that the technique of using transistor asymmetry in a cross-coupled differential pair performs on-par with that of applying external offset voltage. The neuron circuits have been experimentally prototyped and characterized as a proof of concept on the 1.5 mu m AMI technology.

The stability of scheduled multiaccess communication with random coding and independent decoding of messages is investigated. The number of messages that may be scheduled for simultaneous transmission is limited to a given maximum value, and the channels from transmitters to receiver are quasistatic, flat, and have independent fades. Requests for message transmissions are assumed to arrive according to an i.i.d. arrival process. Then, we show the following: (1) in the limit of large message alphabet size, the stability region has an interference limited information-theoretic capacity interpretation, (2) state-independent scheduling policies achieve this asymptotic stability region, and (3) in the asymptotic limit corresponding to immediate access, the stability region for non-idling scheduling policies is shown to be identical irrespective of received signal powers.

Thin films of antimony-doped tin oxide (SnO2:Sb) were prepared by spray pyrolysis using stannous chloride (SnCl2) and antimony trichloride (SbCl3) as precursors. The antimony doping was varied from 0 to 4 wt%. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed the surface morphology to be very smooth, yet grainy in nature. X-ray diffraction (XRD) shows films to have preferred orientation, which varies with the extent of antimony doping: undoped films prefer the (2 1 1) orientation, while the (3 0 1) orientation is preferred for doping levels of 0.5 and 1.0 wt%. For higher doping levels, the (2 0 0) orientation is preferred. This difference in preferred orientations is reflected in the SEM of the films. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) reveals that film roughness is not affected by antimony doping. The minimum sheet resistance (2.17 ohm/square) achieved in the present study is lower than values reported to date in SnO2:Sb films prepared from SnCl2 precursor. The Hall mobility of undoped SnO2 films was found to be 109.52 cm(2)/V s, which reduces to 2.55 cm(2)/ Vs for the films doped with 4 wt% of Sb. On the other hand, the carrier concentration, which is 1.23 x 10(19) cm(-3) in undoped films, increases to 2.89 x 10(21) cm(-3) for the films doped with 4 wt% of Sb. (c) 2004 Elsevier B.V. A set of sufficient conditions to construct lambda-real symbol Maximum Likelihood (ML) decodable STBCs have recently been provided by Karmakar et al. STBCs satisfying these sufficient conditions were named as Clifford Unitary Weight (CUW) codes. In this paper, the maximal rate (as measured in complex symbols per channel use) of CUW codes for lambda = 2(a), a is an element of N is obtained using tools from representation theory. Two algebraic constructions of codes achieving this maximal rate are also provided. One of the constructions is obtained using linear representation of finite groups whereas the other construction is based on the concept of right module algebra over non-commutative rings. To the knowledge of the authors, this is the first paper in which matrices over non-commutative rings is used to construct STBCs. An algebraic explanation is provided for the 'ABBA' construction first proposed by Tirkkonen et al and the tensor product construction proposed by Karmakar et al. Furthermore, it is established that the 4 transmit antenna STBC originally proposed by Tirkkonen et al based on the ABBA construction is actually a single complex symbol ML decodable code if the design variables are permuted and signal sets of appropriate dimensions are chosen.

Use of precoding transforms such as Hadamard Transforms and Phase Alteration for Peak to Average Power Ratio (PAPR) reduction in OFDM systems are well known. In this paper we propose use of Inverse Discrete Fourier Transform (IDFT) and Hadamard transform as precoding transforms in MIMO-OFDM systems to achieve low peak to average power ratio (PAPR). We show that while our approach using IDFT does not disturb the diversity gains of the MIMO-OFDM systems (spatial, temporal and frequency diversity gains), it offers a better trade-off between PAPR reduction and ML decoding complexity compared to that of the Hadamard transform precoding. We study in detail the amount of PAPR reduction achieved for the following two recently proposed full-diversity Space-Frequency coded MIMO-OFDM systems using both the IDFT and the Hadamard transform: (i) W. Su. Z. Safar, M. Olfat, K. J. R. Liu (IEEE Trans. on Signal Processing, Nov. 2003), and (ii) W. Su, Z. Safar, K. J. R. Liu (IEEE Trans. on Information Theory, Jan. 2005).

The matched filter method for detecting a periodic structure on a surface hidden behind randomness is known to detect up to (r(0)/Lambda) gt;= 0.11, where r(0) is the coherence length of light on scattering from the rough part and 3 is the wavelength of the periodic part of the surface-the above limit being much lower than what is allowed by conventional detection methods. The primary goal of this technique is the detection and characterization of the periodic structure hidden behind randomness without the use of any complicated experimental or computational procedures. This paper examines this detection procedure for various values of the amplitude a of the periodic part beginning from a = 0 to small finite values of a. We thus address the importance of the following quantities: `(a)lambda) `, which scales the amplitude of the periodic part with the wavelength of light, and (r(0))Lambda),in determining the detectability of the intensity peaks.
