The industrial production and commercial applications of titanium dioxide nanoparticles have increased considerably in recent times, which has increased the probability of environmental contamination with these agents and their adverse effects on living systems. This study was designed to assess the genotoxicity potential of TiO2 NPs at high exposure concentrations, its bio-uptake, and the oxidative stress it generated, a recognised cause of genotoxicity. Allium cepa root tips were treated with TiO2 NP dispersions at four different concentrations (12.5, 25, 50, 100 mu g/mL). A dose dependant decrease in the mitotic index (69 to 21) and an increase in the number of distinctive chromosomal aberrations were observed. Optical, fluorescence and confocal laser scanning microscopy revealed chromosomal aberrations, including chromosomal breaks and sticky, multipolar, and laggard chromosomes, and micronucleus formation. The chromosomal aberrations and DNA damage were also validated by the comet assay. The bio-uptake of TiO2 in particulate form was the key cause of reactive oxygen species generation, which in turn was probably the cause of the DNA aberrations and genotoxicity observed in this study.

Titanium carbide (TiC) is an electrically conducting refractory interstitial compound possessing several unique properties. A cost-effective, efficient and non-Pt electrocatalyst based on TiC is explored and the multi-functionality of TiC towards various electrochemical reactions that are of significant interest in low temperature fuel cells is studied. Ameliorated activities towards oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and borohydride oxidation are observed with TiC-carbon composites. High sensitivity and selectivity towards ORR have been demonstrated with very good methanol tolerance. The charge transfer interactions between TiC and carbon seem to play a vital role in the improved activity as compared to their individual counterparts. The present study opens up a way to realize completely Pt-free borohydride fuel cell architecture.

An improved photocatalyst consisting of a nanocomposite of exfoliated graphite and titanium dioxide (EG-TiO2) was prepared. SEM and TEM micrographs showed that the spherical TiO2 nanoparticles were evenly distributed on the surface of the EG sheets. A four times photocatalytic enhancement was observed for this floating nanocomposite compared to TiO2 and EG alone for the degradation of eosin yellow. For all the materials, the reactions followed first order kinetics where for EG-TiO2, the rate constant was much higher than for EG and TiO2 under visible light irradiation. The enhanced photocatalytic activity of EG-TiO2 was ascribed to the capability of graphitic layers to accept and transport electrons from the excited TiO2, promoting charge separation. This indicates that carbon, a cheap and abundant material, can be a good candidate as an electron attracting reservoir for photocatalytic organic pollutant degradation. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. Aldimines react with reducing agents, such as Grignards, phenylsilane or zinc in the presence of titanium(IV) isopropoxide to form amines and reductively coupled imines (diamines). Using deuterium labeled reagents, the mechanism of reduction to form amines is described. Reducing agents, such as the Grignard and zinc result in the formation of low valent titanium (LVT), which in turn reduces the imine. On the other hand, phenylsilane reacts by a distinctly different mechanism and where a hydrogen atom from silicon is directly transferred to the titanium coordinated imine. (c) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. TIN thin films with (200) fibre texture are deposited on Cu substrate at room temperature using reactive magnetron sputtering. They exhibit a discharge capacity of 172 mu Ah cm(-2) mu m(-1) (300 mAh g(-1)) in a non-aqueous electrolyte containing a Li salt. There is a graded decrease in discharge capacity when cycled between 0.01 and 3.0 V. Electron microscopy investigations indicate significant changes in surface morphology of the cycled TiN electrodes in comparison with the as deposited TiN films. From XPS depth profile analysis, it is inferred that Li intercalated TIN films consist of lithium compounds, hydroxyl groups, titanium sub oxides and TiN. Lithium diffusivity and reactivity decrease with increase in depth and the major reaction with lithium takes place at film surface and grain boundaries. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Crystallographic texture is perceived to play an important role in controlling material properties. However, the influence of texture in modulating the properties of biomedical materials has not been well investigated. In this work, commercially pure titanium (cp-Ti) was processed through six different routes to generate a variety of textures. The effect of texture on mechanical properties, corrosion behavior, cell proliferation and osteogenesis was characterized for potential use in orthopedic applications. The presence of closely packed, low-energy crystallographic planes at the material surface was influenced by the volume fraction of the components in the overall texture, thereby influencing surface energy and corrosion behavior. Texture modulated osteoblast proliferation through variations in surface water wettability. It also affected mineralization by possibly influencing the coherency between the substrate and calcium phosphate deposits. This study demonstrates that crystallographic texture can be an important tool in improving the properties of biomaterials to achieve the enhanced performance of biomedical implants.

Composite laminates are prone to delamination. Implementation of delamination in the Carrera Unified Formulation frame work using nine noded quadrilateral MITC9 element is discussed in this article. MITC9 element is devoid of shear locking and membrane locking. Delaminated as well as healthy structure is analyzed for free mode vibration. The results from the present work are compared with the available experimental or/and research article or/and the three dimensional finite element simulations. The effect of different kinds and different percentages of area of delamination on the first three natural frequencies of the structure is discussed. The presence of open-mode delamination mode shape for large delaminations within the first three natural frequencies is discussed. Also, the switching of places between the second bending mode, with that of the first torsional mode frequency is discussed. Results obtained from different ordered theories are compared in the presence of delamination. Advantage of layerwise theories as compared to equivalent single layer theories for very large delaminations is stated. The effect of different kinds of delamination and their effect on the second bending and first torsional mode shape is discussed. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The pullout capacity of an inclined strip plate anchor embedded in sand has been determined by using the lower bound theorem of the limit analysis in combination with finite elements and linear optimization. The numerical results in the form of pullout factors have been presented by changing gradually the inclination of the plate from horizontal to vertical. The pullout resistance increases significantly with an increase in the horizontal inclination (theta) of the plate especially for theta > 30 degrees. The effect of the anchor plate-soil interface friction angle (delta) on the pullout resistance becomes extensive for a vertical anchor but remains insignificant for a horizontal anchor. The development of the failure zone around the anchor plates was also studied by varying theta and delta. The results from the analysis match well with the theoretical and experimental results reported in literature.

The preparation of semisolid slurry of A356 aluminum alloy using an oblique plate was investigated. A356 alloy melt undergoes partial solidification when it flows down on an oblique plate cooled from underneath by counter flowing water. It results in continuous formation of columnar dendrites on plate wall. Due to forced convection, these dendrites are sheared off into equiaxed/fragmented grains and then washed away continuously to produce semisolid slurry at plate exit. Melt pouring temperature provides required condition of solidification whereas plate inclination enables necessary shear for producing semisolid slurry of desired quality. Slurry obtained was solidified in metal mould to produce semisolid-cast billets of desired microstructure. Furthermore, semisolid-cast billets were heat treated to improve surface quality. Microstructures of both semisolid-cast and heat-treated billets were analyzed. Effects of melt pouring temperature and plate inclination on solidification and microstructure of billets produced using oblique plate were described. The investigations involved four different melt pouring temperatures (620, 625, 630 and 635 degrees C) associated with four different plate inclinations (30 degrees, 45 degrees, 60 degrees and 75 degrees). Melt pouring temperature of 625 degrees C with plate inclination of 60 degrees shows fine and globular microstructures and it is the optimum.

The present investigation is an attempt at correlating the crystallographic orientation and mechanical properties of hexagonal commercially pure titanium (cp-titanium). Annealed cp-titanium sheets are subjected to tensile deformation along the rolling direction, along 45 degrees to the rolling direction and along 90 degrees to the rolling direction respectively. Crystallographic textures and mechanical properties of these cp-titanium samples are investigated in the present study. The hardness of different grains/orientations is estimated through nanoindentation, grain average misorientation, orientation estimated elastic stiffness and Taylor factor measurements. It is observed that the hardness of the grains close to basal orientation is higher compared to non-basal orientations. It is further observed that the estimated bulk mechanical properties of cp-titanium have a direct relationship with the volume fraction of basal grains/orientations. Fractal dimension based damage detection method is investigated for a composite plate with random material properties. Composite material shows spatially varying random material properties because of complex manufacturing processes. Matrix cracks are considered as damage in the composite plate. Such cracks are often seen as the initial damage mechanism in composites under fatigue loading and also occur due to low velocity impact. Static deflection of the cantilevered composite plate with uniform loading is calculated using the finite element method. Damage detection is carried out based on sliding window fractal dimension operator using the static deflection. Two dimensional homogeneous Gaussian random field is generated using Karhunen-Loeve (KL) expansion to represent the spatial variation of composite material property. The robustness of fractal dimension based damage detection method is demonstrated considering the composite material properties as a two dimensional random field.

The research work on bulk hydroxyapatite (HA)-based composites are driven by the need to develop biomaterials with better mechanical properties without compromising its bioactivity and biocompatibility properties. Despite several years of research, the mechanical properties of the HA-based composites still need to be enhanced to match the properties of natural cortical bone. In this regard, the scope of this review on the HA-based bulk biomaterials is limited to the processing and the mechanical as well as biocompatibility properties for bone tissue engineering applications of a model system that is hydroxyapatite-titanium (HA-Ti) bulk composites. It will be discussed in this review how HA-Ti based bulk composites can be processed to have better fracture toughness and strength without compromising biocompatibility. The advantages of the functionally gradient materials to integrate the mechanical and biocompatibility properties is a promising approach in hard tissue engineering and has been emphasized here in reference to the limited literature reports. On the biomaterials fabrication aspect, the recent results are discussed to demonstrate that advanced manufacturing techniques, like spark plasma sintering can be adopted as a processing route to restrict the sintering reactions, while enhancing the mechanical properties. Various toughening mechanisms related to careful tailoring of microstructure are discussed. The in vitro cytocompatibilty, cell fate processes as well as in vivo biocompatibility results are also reviewed and the use of flow cytometry to quantify in vitro cell fate processes is being emphasized. A356 alloy melt solidifies partially when it flows down on an oblique plate cooled from bottom by counter flowing water. Columnar dendrites are continuously formed on the plate wall. Because of the forced convection, these dendrites are sheared off into equiaxed/fragmented grains and then washed away continuously by producing semisolid slurry at plate exit. Plate cooling rate provides required extent/amount of solidification whereas plate length enables necessary shear for producing semisolid slurry of desired quality. Slurry obtained is solidified in metal mould to produce semisolid-cast billets of desired microstructure. Furthermore, semisolid-cast billets are also heat-treated to improve surface quality. Microstructures of both semisolid-cast and heat-treated billets are compared. The effects of plate length and plate cooling rate on solidification and microstructure of billets produced by using oblique plate are illustrated. Three different plate lengths (200 mm, 250 mm, 300 mm) associated with three different heat transfer coefficients (1000, 2000 and 2500 W/(m(2).K)) are involved. Plate length of 250 mm with heat transfer coefficient of 2000 W/(m(2).K) gives fine and globular microstructures and is the optimum as there is absolutely no possibility of sticking of slurry to plate wall.

Determining the concentrations of acetylcholine (ACh) and choline (Ch) is clinically important. ACh is a neurotransmitter that acts as a key link in the communication between neurons in the spinal cord and in nerve skeletal junctions in vertebrates, and plays an important role in transmitting signals in the brain. A bienzymatic sensor for the detection of ACh was prepared by co-immobilizing choline oxidase (ChO) and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) on graphene matrix/platinum nanoparticles, and then electrodepositing them on an ITO-coated glass plate. Graphene nanoparticles were decorated with platinum nanoparticles and were electrodeposited on a modified ITO-coated glass plate to form a modified electrode. The modified electrode was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) studies. The optimum response of the enzyme electrode was obtained at pH 7.0 and 35 degrees C. The response time of this ACh-sensing system was shown to be 4 s. The linear range of responses to ACh was 0.005-700 mu M. This biosensor exhibits excellent anti-interferential abilities and good stability, retaining 50% of its original current even after 4 months. It has been applied for the detection of ACh levels in human serum samples.

In this study, a unique method was adopted to design porous membranes through crystallization induced phase separation in PVDF/PMMA (poly(vinylidene fluoride)/poly(methyl methacrylate)) blends. By etching out PMMA, which segregates either in the interlamellar and/or in the interspherulitic regions of the blends, nanoporous hierarchical structures can be derived. Different nanoparticles like titanium dioxide (TiO2), silver nanoparticle (Ag) decorated carbon nanotubes (Ag-CNTs), TiO2 decorated CNTs (TiO2-CNTs), Ag decorated TiO2 (Ag-TiO2) and Ag-TiO2 decorated CNTs (Ag@TiO2-CNTs) were synthesized and melt mixed with 80/20 PVDF/PMMA blends to render antibacterial activity to the membranes. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to study the crystalline morphology of the membranes. A significant improvement in the trans-membrane flux was obtained in the blends with Ag@TiO2 decorated CNTs as compared to the membranes derived from the neat blends, which can be attributed to the interconnected pores in these membranes. Both qualitative and quantitative studies of antifouling and antibacterial activity (using E. coli as a model bacterium) were performed using the standard plate count method. SEM micrographs clearly showed that the antifouling activity of the membranes was improved with addition of Ag@TiO2-CNTs. In the quantitative standard plate count method, the bacterial colony significantly decreased with the addition of Ag@TiO2-CNTs as against neat blends. This study opens a new avenue in the fabrication of polymer blend based membranes for water filtration.
