Antiferroelectric lead zirconate thin films were formed on platinum coated silicon substrates by a reactive magnetron co-sputtering method. The films showed (240) preferred orientation. The crystallization temperatures and the preferred orientation were affected by the lead content in the films. The electric field forced transformation from the antiferroelectric phase to the ferroelectric phase was observed at room temperature with a maximum polarization value of 36 mu C/cm(2). The average field to excite the ferroelectric state and that for the reversion to the antiferroelectric state were 267 and 104 kV/cm respectively. (C) 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Effects of basis set and electron correlation on the equilibrium geometry, force constants and vibrational spectra of BH3NH3 have been studied. A series of basis sets ranging from double zeta to triple zeta including polarization and diffuse functions have been utilized. All the SCF based calculations overestimate the dative B-N bond distance and considerable improvement occurs when the treatment for electron correlation is introduced. Detailed vibrational analysis for BH3NH3 has been carried out. The mean absolute percentage deviation of the ab initio predicted vibration frequencies of (BH3NH3)-B-11 from the experiment is about 10% for the SCF based calculations and the MP2 method shows better agreement, the overall deviation being 5-6%. The ground state effective force constants of BH3NH3 were obtained using RECOVES procedure. The RECOVES sets of force constants are found to be highly satisfactory for the prediction of the vibrational frequencies of different isotopomers of BH3NH3. The mean absolute percentage deviation of the calculated frequencies of different isotopomers from the experiment is much less than 1%. The RECOVES-MP2/augDZP set of force constants was found to be the best set among the different sets for this molecule. Theoretical infrared intensities are in fair agreement with the observed spectral features.

The quest for novel two-dimensional materials has led to the discovery of hybrids where graphene and hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) occur as phase-separated domains. Using first-principles calculations, we study the energetics and electronic and magnetic properties of such hybrids in detail. The formation energy of quantum dot inclusions (consisting of n carbon atoms) varies as 1/root n, owing to the interface. The electronic gap between the occupied and unoccupied energy levels of quantum dots is also inversely proportional to the length scale, 1/root n-a feature of confined Dirac fermions. For zigzag nanoroads, a combination of the intrinsic electric field caused by the polarity of the h-BN matrix and spin polarization at the edges results in half-metallicity; a band gap opens up under the externally applied ``compensating'' electric field. For armchair nanoroads, the electron confinement opens the gap, different among three subfamilies due to different bond length relaxations at the interfaces, and decreasing with the width.

Phase relations in the system Ca-Pb-O at 1100 K have been determined by equilibrating 18 compositions in the ternary and identifying the phases present in quenched samples by X-ray diffraction and energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX). Only one ternary compound Ca2PbO4 was found to be present. The compound coexists with CaO and PbO. The intermetallic compounds Ca2Pb, Ca5Pb3 and CaPb and liquid alloys are in equilibrium with CaO. The standard Gibbs energies of formation of Ca2PbO4 (880 - 1100 K) and Pb3O4 (770 - 910 K) were determined using solid-state cells based on yttria-stabilized zirconia as the solid electrolyte. Pure oxygen gas at 0.1 MPa was used as the reference electrode. For measurements on Ca2PbO4, a novel cell design with three electrodes in series, separated by solid electrolyte membranes, was used to avoid polarization of the electrode containing three solid phases. Two three-phase electrodes were used. The first absorbs the electrochemical flux of oxygen from the reference electrode to the measuring electrode. The other three-phase electrode, which is unaffected by the oxygen flux through the solid electrolyte, is used for electromotive force (EMF) measurement. The results from EMF studies were cross-checked using thermogravimetry (TG) under controlled oxygen partial pressures. The stability of Pb3O4 was investigated using a conventional solid-state cell with RuO2 electrodes. The results can be summarized by the following equations: 2CaO + PbO +1/2O(2) --> Ca2PbO4 Delta(r)G degrees/J mol(-1) = (- 128340 + 93.21 T/K) +/- 200 3PbO + 1/2O(2) --> Pb3O4 Delta(r)G degrees/J mol(-1) = (- 70060 + 77.5 T/K) +/- 150

Non-exponential electron transfer kinetics in complex systems are often analyzed in terms of a quenched, static disorder model. In this work we present an alternative analysis in terms of a simple dynamic disorder model where the solvent is characterized by highly non-exponential dynamics. We consider both low and high barrier reactions. For the former, the main result is a simple analytical expression for the survival probability of the reactant. In this case, electron transfer, in the long time, is controlled by the solvent polarization relaxation-in agreement with the analyses of Rips and Jortner and of Nadler and Marcus. The short time dynamics is also non-exponential, but for different reasons. The high barrier reactions, on the other hand, show an interesting dynamic dependence on the electronic coupling element, V-el.

Ab-initio calculations are used to determine the parameters that determine magnonic band structure of PdnFem multilayers (n = 2, m <= 8). We obtain the layer-resolved magnetization, the exchange coupling, and the magnetic anisotropy of the Pd-Fe structures. The Fe moment is 3.0 mu(B) close to the Pd layers and 2.2 mu(B) in the middle of the Fe layers. An intriguing but not usually considered aspect is that the elemental Pd is nonmagnetic, similar to Cu spacer layers in other multilayer systems. This leads to a pre-asymptotic ferromagnetic coupling through the Pd (about 40 mJ/m(2)). Furthermore, the Pd acquires a small moment due to spin polarization by neighboring Fe atoms, which translates into magnetic anisotropy. The anisotropies are large, in the range typical for L1(0) structures, which is beneficial for high-frequency applications. (C) 2011 American Institute of Physics. doi:10.1063/1.3556763]

Mesogens containing four rings in the main core can accommodate one terminal and two nearby lateral chains on each outside aromatic ring. These compounds containing six chains present an enantiotropic nematic range which is influenced by the rigidity of the links. The conformational behaviour of the first methyleneoxy group within the chains was investigated by one and two dimensional C-13 NMR. The sign of the jump in chemical shifts when entering the nematic phase indicates the folding of each lateral branch. Dipolar oscillations during cross-polarization contact provide the values of the bond order parameter. The two First lateral fragments do not behave in the same way, demonstrating the influence of the fragment along which the chain is back: folded.

We report Doppler-only radar observations of Icarus at Goldstone at a transmitter frequency of 8510 MHz (3.5 cm wavelength) during 8-10 June 1996, the first radar detection of the object since 1968. Optimally filtered and folded spectra achieve a maximum opposite-circular (OC) polarization signal-to-noise ratio of about 10 and help to constrain Icarus' physical properties. We obtain an OC radar cross section of 0.05 km(2) (with a 35% uncertainty), which is less than values estimated by Goldstein (1969) and by Pettengill et al. (1969), and a circular polarization (SC/OC) ratio of 0.5+/-0.2. We analyze the echo power spectrum with a model incorporating the echo bandwidth B and a spectral shape parameter it, yielding a coupled constraint between B and n. We adopt 25 Hz as the lower bound on B, which gives a lower bound on the maximum pole-on breadth of about 0.6 km and upper bounds on the radar and optical albedos that are consistent with Icarus' tentative QS classification. The observed circular polarization ratio indicates a very rough near-surface at spatial scales of the order of the radar wavelength. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Vibrational phase relaxation near gas-liquid and liquid-solid phase coexistence has been studied by molecular dynamics simulations of N-N stretch in N-2. Experimentally observed pronounced insensitivity of phase relaxation from the triple point to beyond the boiling point is found to originate from a competition between density relaxation and resonant-energy transfer terms. The sharp rise in relaxation rate near the critical point (CP) can be attributed at least partly to the sharp, rise in vibration-rotation coupling contribution. Substantial subquadratic quantum number dependence of overtone dephasing rate is found near the CP and in supercritical fluids. [S0031-9007 (99)09318-7].

Lanthanum doped lead titanate (PLT) thin films were identified as the most potential candidates for the pyroelectric and memory applications. PLT thin films were deposited on Pt coated Si by excimer laser ablation technique. The polarization behavior of PLT thin films has been studied over a temperature range of 300 K to 550 K. A universal power law relation was brought into picture to explain the frequency dependence of ac conductivity. At higher frequency region ac conductivity of PLT thin films become temperature independent. The temperature dependence of ac conductivity and the relaxation time is analyzed in detail. The activation energy obtained from the ac conductivity was attributed to the shallow trap controlled space charge conduction in the bulk of the sample. The impedance analysis for PLT thin films were also performed to get insight of the microscopic parameters, like grain, grain boundary, and film-electrode interface etc. The imaginary component of impedance Z" exhibited different peak maxima at different temperatures. Different types of mechanisms were analyzed in detail to explain the dielectric relaxation behavior in the PLT thin films.

Methanol-tolerant Pt-Pd alloy catalysts supported on to carbon with varying Pt:Pd atomic ratios of 1:1, 2:1 and 3:1 are prepared by a novel wet-chemical method and characterized using powder XRD, XPS, FESEM, EDAX and TEM techniques. The optimum atomic weight ratio for Pt to Pd in the carbon-supported alloy catalyst as established by linear-sweep voltammetry (LSV) and cell polarization studies is found to be 2:1. A direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) employing carbon-supported Pt-Pd (2:1) alloy (Pt-Pd/C) catalyst as the cathode catalyst delivers a peak-power density of 115 mW/cm(2) at 70 degrees C as compared to peak-power density of 60 mW/cm(2) obtained with the DMFC employing carbon-supported Pt (Pt/C) catalyst operating under similar conditions. In the literature, DMFCs operating with Pt-TiO2 (2:1)/C and Pt-Au (2:1)/C methanol-tolerant cathodes are reported to exhibit maximum ORR activity among the group of these methanol-tolerant cathodes with varying catalysts compositions. Accordingly, the present study also provides an effective route to design methanol-tolerant-oxygen-reduction catalysts for DMFCs. (C) 2011 The Electrochemical Society. Electrical characterization of Ba(Zr0.1Ti0.9)O-3 thin films grown by pulsed laser ablation technique
Resumo:
In situ annealed thin films of ferroelectric Ba(Zr0.1Ti0.9)O-3 were deposited on platinum substrates by pulsed laser ablation technique. The as grown films were polycrystalline in nature without the evidence of any secondary phases. The polarization hysteresis loop confirmed the ferroelectricity, which was also cross-checked with the capacitance-voltage characteristics. The remnant polarization was about 5.9 muC cm(-2) at room temperature and the coercive field was 45 kV. There was a slight asymmetry in the hysteresis for different polarities, which was thought to be due to the work function differences of different electrodes. The dielectric constant was about 452 and was found to exhibit low frequency dispersion that increased with frequency, This was related to the space-charge polarization. The complex impedance was plotted and this exhibited a semicircular trace, and indicated an equivalent parallel R - C circuit within the sample. This was attributed to the grain response. The DC leakage current-voltage plot was consistent with the space-charge limited conduction theory, but showed some deviation, which was explained by assuming a Poole-Frenkel type conduction to be superimposed on to the usual space-charge controlled current. instead of using chemical-reducing agents to facilitate the reduction and dissolution of manganese and iron oxide in the ocean nodule, electrochemical reduction based on two approaches, namely, cathodic polarization and galvanic interaction, can also be considered as attractive alternatives. Galvanic leaching of ocean nodules in the presence of pyrite and pyrolusite for complete recovery of Cu, Ni and Co has been discussed. The key for successful and efficient dissolution of copper, nickel and cobalt from ocean nodules depends on prior reduction of the manganese and ferric oxides with which the above valuable nonferrous metals are interlocked. Polarization studies using a slurry electrode system indicated that maximum dissolution of iron and manganese due to electrochemical reduction occurred at negative DC potentials of -600 mV (SCE) and -1400 mV (SCE). The present work is also relevant to galvanic bioleaching of ocean nodules using autotrophic microorganisms, such as Thiobacillus ferrooxidans and T thiooxidans, which resulted in significant dissolution of copper, nickel and cobalt at the expense of microbiologically generated acids. Various electrochemical and biochemical mechanisms are outlined and the electroleaching and galvanic processes so developed are shown to yield almost complete dissolution of all metal values. Redox reactions which occur at positive potentials such as ferrous/ferric, hydroquinone/quinone, ferrocyanide/ferricyanide etc. in aqueous acidic electrolytes cannot be studied on non-platinum metals, for example, a Ni electrode. On the contrary, these reactions occur on polyaniline (PANI) modified Ni electrodes, as evidenced from cyclic voltammetry, amperometry and steady-state polarization experiments. Under identical experimental conditions of scan rate (v) and concentration (C), the peak current density (i(p)) values of Fe2+/Fe3+ redox reaction are greater on the PANI modified Ni than on Pt. Additionally, the peak potential separation (DeltaE(p)) of the voltammogram is lesser on the PANI modified Ni. With an increase in thickness of the PANI, DeltaE(p) increases suggesting that the redox reactions tend to depart from the reversibility. Scanning electron micrographs reveal the presence of a crystalline deposit of PANI on Ni when the thickness of PANI is about 0.08 mum. However, the PANI becomes amorphous and porous at higher thickness values. Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction studies corroborate the observations made out of scanning electron microscopy. Higher catalytic activity of PANI is attributed to crystalline nature of PANI on Ni. Exchange current density and standard rate constant of Fe2+/Fe(3+)redox reaction are evaluated. In this paper, electroleaching and electrobioleaching of ocean manganese nodules are discussed along with the role of galvanic interactions in bioleaching. Polarization studies using a manganese nodule slurry electrode system indicated that the maximum dissolution of iron and manganese due to electrochemical reduction occurred at negative DC potentials of -600 and -1,400 mV(SCE). Electroleaching and electrobioleaching of ocean manganese nodules in the presence of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans and Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans at the above negative applied DC potentials resulted insignificant dissolution of copper, nickel and cobalt in 1 M H2SO4 and in sulfuric acid solution at pH 0.5 and 2.0. Mechanisms involved in electrobioleaching of ocean manganese nodules are discussed. Galvanic leaching of ocean manganese nodules in the presence of externally added pyrite and pyrolusite for enhancement of dissolution was also studied. Various electrochemical and biochemical parameters were optimized, and the electroleaching and galvanic processes thus developed are shown to yield almost complete dissolution of all metal values. This electrobioleaching process developed in the laboratory may be cost effective, energy efficient and environmentally friendly.
