Crystallization-induced phase separation and segmental relaxations in poly(vinylidene fluoride)/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PVDF/PMMA) blends was systematically investigated by melt-rheology and broadband dielectric spectroscopy in the presence of multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWNTs). Different functionalized MWNTs (amine, -NH2; acid, -COOH) were incorporated in the blends by melt-mixing above the melting temperature of PVDF, where the blends are miscible, and the crystallization induced phase separation was probed in situ by shear rheology. Interestingly, only -NH2 functionalized MWNTs (a-MWNTs) aided in the formation of beta-phase (trans-trans) crystals in PVDF, whereas both the neat blends and the blends with -COOH functionalized MWNTs (c-MWNTs) showed only alpha-phase (trans-gauche-trans-gauche') crystals as inferred from wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WXRD) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR). Furthermore, blends with only a-MWNTs facilitated in heterogeneous nucleation in the blends manifesting in an increase in the calorimetric crystallization temperature and hence, augmented the theologically determined crystallintion induced phase separation temperature. The dielectric relaxations associated with the crystalline phase of PVDF (alpha(c)) was completely absent in the blends with a-MWNTs in contrast to neat blends and the blends with c-MWNTs in the dielectric loss spectra. The relaxations in the blends investigated here appeared to follow Havriliak-Negami (HN) empirical equations, and, more interestingly, the dynamic heterogeneity in the system could be mapped by an extra relaxation at higher frequency at the crystallization-induced phase separation temperature. The mean relaxation time (tau(HN)) was evaluated and observed to be delayed in the presence of MWNTs in the blends, more prominently in the case of blends with a-MWNTs. The latter also showed a significant increase in the dielectric relaxation strength (Delta epsilon). Electron microscopy and selective etching was used to confirm the localization of MWNTs in the amorphous phases of the interspherulitic regions as observed from scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The evolved crystalline morphology, during crystallization-induced phase separation, was observed to have a strong influence on the charge transport processes in the blends. These observations were further supported by the specific interactions (like dipole induced dipole interaction) between a-MWNTs and PVDF, as inferred from FTIR, and the differences in the crystalline morphology as observed from WXRD and polarized optical microscopy (POM).

We have analyzed the characteristics of electrodes made of TiO2 nanotubes, microspheres and commercially available nanoparticles for dye sensitized solar cell. The morphology of the electrodes and the formation of aggregates have been analyzed by scanning electron microscopy and surface profiling technique. The concentration of Ti3+ type impurity state on the surface of these electrodes is quantified by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Micro structural properties have been characterized by Brunauer, Emmett and Teller method The optical properties of the electrodes such as band gap energy, the type of band formation and the diffuse reflectance are evaluated by UV-Visible spectroscopy. The photovoltaic characteristics of dye solar cell made of these electrodes have been evaluated and it is found that the characteristics of the TiO2 film alone can alter the overall conversion efficiency to a great extent. Additional analysis using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy has been carried out to probe the electron transport properties and charge collection efficiency of these electrodes.

Surface-functionalized multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) are incorporated in poly(methyl methacrylate)/styrene acrylonitrile (PMMA/SAN) blends and the pretransitional regime is monitored in situ by melt rheology and dielectric spectroscopy. As the blends exhibit weak dynamic asymmetry, the obvious transitions in the melt rheology due to thermal concentration fluctuations are weak. This is further supported by the weak temperature dependence of the correlation length ( approximate to 10-12 angstrom) in the vicinity of demixing. Hence, various rheological techniques in both the temperature and frequency domains are adopted to evaluate the demixing temperature. The spinodal decomposition temperature is manifested in an increase in the miscibility gap in the presence of MWCNTs. Furthermore, MWCNTs lead to a significant slowdown of the segmental dynamics in the blends. Thermally induced phase separation in the PMMA/SAN blends lead to selective localization of MWCNTs in the PMMA phase. This further manifests itself in a significant increase in the melt conductivity.

We report the growth of carbon nanoflakes (CNFs) on Si substrate by the hot filament chemical vapor deposition without the substrate bias or the catalyst. CNFs were grown using the single wall carbon nanotubes and the multiwall carbon nanotubes as the nucleation center, in the Ar-rich CH4-H-2-Ar precursor gas mixture with 1% CH4, at the chamber pressure and the substrate temperature of 7.5 Ton and 840 degrees C, respectively. In the H-2-rich condition, CNF synthesis failed due to severe etch-removal of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) while it was successful at the optimized Ar-rich condition. Other forms of carbon such as nano-diamond or mesoporous carbon failed to serve as the nucleation centers for the CNF growth. We proposed a mechanism of the CNF synthesis from the CNTs, which involved the initial unzipping of CNTs by atomic hydrogen and subsequent nucleation and growth of CNFs from the unzipped portion of the graphene layers. In this Letter, we present a non-contact method of controlling and monitoring photomechanical actuation in carbon nanotubes (CNT) by exposing it to ultra-violet radiation at different pulse rates (10 to 200 Hz). This is accomplished by imparting a reversible photo induced strain (5-330 mu epsilon) on CNT coated fibre Bragg gratings; CNT undergoes an internal reversible structural change due to cyclic photon absorption that leads to the development of mechanical strain, which in turn allows reversible switching of the Bragg wavelength. The results also reveal an interesting pulse rate dependent rise and fall times of photomechanical actuation in CNT. (C) 2014 AIP Publishing LLC.

Three isomeric meso-SiMe3C6H4 substituted BODIPYs have been synthesized and their optical properties studied. The constitutional isomers show similar absorption properties but vastly different emissive properties as a result of their different conformational flexibility. Fluorine-19 NMR study is used to unravel the conformational state of the BODIPY isomers at a molecular level. (C) 2013 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

We demonstrate that etched fiber Bragg gratings (eFBGs) coated with single walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) and graphene oxide (GO) are highly sensitive and accurate biochemical sensors. Here, for detecting protein concanavalin A (Con A), mannose-functionalized poly(propyl ether imine) (PETIM) dendrimers (DMs) have been attached to the SWNTs (or GO) coated on the surface modified eFBG. The dendrimers act as multivalent ligands, having specificity to detect lectin Con A. The specificity of the sensor is shown by a much weaker response (factor of similar to 2500 for the SWNT and similar to 2000 for the GO coated eFBG) to detect non specific lectin peanut agglutinin. DM molecules functionalized GO coated eFBG sensors showed excellent specificity to Con A even in the presence of excess amount of an interfering protein bovine serum albumin. The shift in the Bragg wavelength (Delta lambda(B)) with respect to the lambda(B) values of SWNT (or GO)-DM coated eFBG for various concentrations of lectin follows Langmuir type adsorption isotherm, giving an affinity constant of similar to 4 x 10(7) M-1 for SWNTs coated eFBG and similar to 3 x 10(8) M-1 for the GO coated eFBG. In this study, the effect of nano-B4C addition on the microstructural and the mechanical behavior of pure Mg are investigated. Pure Mg-metal reinforced with different amounts of nano-size B4C particulates were synthesized using the disintegrated melt deposition technique followed by hot extrusion. Microstructural characterization of the developed Mg/x-B4C composites revealed uniform distribution of nano-B4C particulates and significant grain refinement. Electron back scattered diffraction (EBSD) analyses showed presence of relatively more recrystallized grains and absence of fiber texture in Mg/B4C nanocomposites when compared to pure Mg. The evaluation of mechanical properties indicated a significant improvement in tensile properties of the composites. The significant improvement in tensile ductility (similar to 180% increase with respect to pure Mg) is among the highest observed when compared to the pure Mg based nanocomposites existing in the current literature. The superior mechanical properties of the Mg/B4C nanocomposites are attributed to the uniform distribution of the nanoparticles and the tendency for texture randomization (absence of fiber texture) achieved due to the nano-B4C addition. The addition of B, up to about 0.1 wt%, to Ti-6Al-4V (Ti64) reduces its as-cast grain and colony sizes by an order of magnitude. In this paper, the creep resistance of this alloy modified with 0.06 and 0.11 wt% B additions was investigated in the temperature range of 475-550 degrees C and compared with that of the base alloy. Conventional dead-weight creep tests as well as stress relaxation tests were employed for this purpose. Experimental results show that the B addition enhances both elevated temperature strength and creep properties of Ti64, especially at the lower end of the temperatures investigated. The steady state creep rate in the alloy with 0.11 wt% B was found to be an order of magnitude lower than that in the base alloy, and both the strain at failure as well as the time for rupture increases with the B content. These marked improvements in the creep resistance due to B addition to Ti64 were attributed primarily to the increased number of inter-phase interfaces - a direct consequence of the microstructural refinement that occurs with the B addition - that provide resistance to dislocation motion. Single-stranded DNA (ss-DNA) oligomers (dA(20), d(C(3)TA(2))(3)C-3] or dT(20)) are able to disperse single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) in water at pH 7 through non-covalent wrapping on the nanotube surface. At lower pH, an alteration of the DNA secondary structure leads to precipitation of the SWNTs from the dispersion. The structural change of dA(20) takes place from the single-stranded to the A-motif form at pH 3.5 while in case of d(C(3)TA(2))(3)C-3] the change occurs from the single-stranded to the i-motif form at pH 5. Due to this structural change, the DNA is no longer able to bind the nanotube and hence the SWNT precipitates from its well-dispersed state. However, this could be reversed on restoring the pH to 7, where the DNA again relaxes in the single-stranded form. In this way the dispersion and precipitation process could be repeated over and over again. Variable temperature UV-Vis-NIR and CD spectroscopy studies showed that the DNA-SWNT complexes were thermally stable even at similar to 90 degrees C at pH 7. Broadband NIR laser (1064 nm) irradiation also demonstrated the stability of the DNA-SWNT complex against local heating introduced through excitation of the carbon nanotubes. Electrophoretic mobility shift assay confirmed the formation of a stable DNA-SWNT complex at pH 7 and also the generation of DNA secondary structures (A/i-motif) upon acidification. The interactions of ss-DNA with SWNTs cause debundling of the nanotubes from its assembly. Selective affinity of the semiconducting SWNTs towards DNA than the metallic ones enables separation of the two as evident from spectroscopic as well as electrical conductivity studies.

TIN thin films with (200) fibre texture are deposited on Cu substrate at room temperature using reactive magnetron sputtering. They exhibit a discharge capacity of 172 mu Ah cm(-2) mu m(-1) (300 mAh g(-1)) in a non-aqueous electrolyte containing a Li salt. There is a graded decrease in discharge capacity when cycled between 0.01 and 3.0 V. Electron microscopy investigations indicate significant changes in surface morphology of the cycled TiN electrodes in comparison with the as deposited TiN films. From XPS depth profile analysis, it is inferred that Li intercalated TIN films consist of lithium compounds, hydroxyl groups, titanium sub oxides and TiN. Lithium diffusivity and reactivity decrease with increase in depth and the major reaction with lithium takes place at film surface and grain boundaries. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Electrostatic discharge (ESD) investigations on the multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) are performed for the first time. A novel ESD failure mechanism of subsequent shell burning has been discovered. By using nanosecond pulse measurements, a new insight into metal-to-carbon nanotube (CNT) contact behavior could be achieved. Clear signature of two very different conduction mechanisms and related failure types at high current injection has been found. By determining the time to failure, an Arrhenius-like relation was extracted, which was explained by the oxidation of CNT shells. Finally, an extraordinary ESD failure current density of MWCNT of 1.2 x 10(9) A/cm(2) could be shown.

Peptide based self assembled nanostructures have attracted growing interest in recent years due to their numerous potential applications particularly in biomedical sciences. Di-peptide Phe-Phe was shown previously to self-assemble into nanotube like structures. In this work, we studied the affect of peptide backbone length and conformational flexibility on the self assembly process by using two dipeptides based on the Phe-Phe backbone (beta Phe-Phe and beta Phe-Delta Phe): one containing a flexible beta Phe amino acid, and the other containing both a flexible bPhe as well as a backbone constraining Alpha Phe (alpha,beta-dehydrophenylalanine) amino acid. Electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction experiments revealed that these new di-peptides can self-assemble into nanotubes having different properties than the native Phe-Phe nanotubes. These nanotubes were stable over a broad range of temperatures and the introduction of non-natural amino acids provided them with stability against the action of nonspecific proteases. Moreover, these dipeptides showed no cytotoxicity towards HeLa and L929 cells, and were able to encapsulate small drug molecules. We further showed that anticancerous drug mitoxantrone was more efficient in killing HeLa and B6F10 cells when entrapped in nanotubes as compared to free mitoxantrone. Therefore, these beta-phenylalanine and alpha, beta-dehydrophenylalanine containing dipeptide nanotubes may be useful in the development of biocompatible and proteolytically stable drug delivery vehicles.
