This paper presents methodologies for fracture analysis of concrete structural components with and without considering tension softening effect. Stress intensity factor (SIF) is computed by using analytical approach and finite element analysis. In the analytical approach, SW accounting for tension softening effect has been obtained as the difference of SIP obtained using linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) principles and SIP due to closing pressure. Superposition principle has been used by accounting for non-linearity in incremental form. SW due to crack closing force applied on the effective crack face inside the process zone has been computed using Green's function approach. In finite element analysis, the domain integral method has been used for computation of SIR The domain integral method is used to calculate the strain energy release rate and SIF when a crack grows. Numerical studies have been conducted on notched 3-point bending concrete specimen with and without considering the cohesive stresses. It is observed from the studies that SW obtained from the finite element analysis with and without considering the cohesive stresses is in good agreement with the corresponding analytical value. The effect of cohesive stress on SW decreases with increase of crack length. Further, studies have been conducted on geometrically similar structures and observed that (i) the effect of cohesive stress on SW is significant with increase of load for a particular crack length and (iii) SW values decreases with increase of tensile strength for a particular crack length and load.

Enantioselective synthesis of possible diastereomers of heptadeca-1-ene-4,6-diyne-3,8,9,10-tetrol, a structure proposed for the natural product isolated from Hydrocotyle leucocephala is accomplished. The reported spectral data of the natural product did not match those of any of the isomers that were synthesized and established that the structure proposed for the natural product is not correct and requires revision.

The Ca2+-activated K+ channel in endocrine cells is responsible for membrane hyperpolarization and rhythmic firing of action potentials. The probability of opening of this channel is sensitive to intracellular-free Ca2+ concentration. In this study we have identified one such large conductance Ca2+-activated K+ channel in alpha T3-1 pituitary gonadotroph cell. This channel is ohmic with a unit conductance of 170 pS in symmetrical KCl (135 mM) and its current reverses near zero millivolts. When more than one channel is present in the patch membrane they open and close independent of each other, exhibiting no cooperativity between them as expected of a binomial distribution. The regulatory mechanism of this channel in modulating hormone secretion from alpha T3-1 gonadotroph cells is indicated.

The ac conductivity and dielectric behaviors of sodium borovanadate glasses have been studied over wide ranges of composition and frequency. The de activation energies calculated from the complex impedance plots decrease linearly with the Na2O concentration, indicating that ionic conductivity dominates in these glasses. The possible origin of low-temperature departures of conductivity curves (from linearity) of vanadium-rich glasses in log sigma versus 1/T plots is discussed. The ac conductivities have been fitted to the Almond-West type power law expression with use of a single value of s. It is found that in most of the glasses s exhibits a temperature-dependent minimum. The dielectric data are converted into moduli (M*) and are analyzed using the Kohlrausch-William-Watts stretched exponential function, The activation barriers, W, calculated from the temperature-dependent dielectric loss peaks compare well with the activation barriers calculated from the de conductivity plots. The stretching exponent beta is found to be temperature independent and is not likely to be related as in the equation beta = 1 - s, An attempt is made to elucidate the origin of the stretching phenomena. It appears that either a model of the increased contribution of polarization energy (caused by the increased modifier concentration) and hence the increased monopole-induced dipole interactions or a model based on increased intercationic interactions can explain the slowing down of the primitive relaxation in ionically conducting glasses.

Natural convection from an isothermal vertical surface to a thermally stratified fluid is studied numerically. A wide range of stratification levels is considered. It is shown that at high levels of ambient thermal stratification, a portion at the top of the plate absorbs heat, while a horizontal plume forms around a location where the plate temperature equals the ambient temperature. The plume is shown to be inherently unsteady, and its transient nature is investigated in detail. The effect of the temperature defect in striating the plume is discussed. Average Nusselt number data are presented for Pr = 6.0 and 0.7.

Concrete is basically a heterogeneous material made up of ingredients with distinct physical and mechanical properties. As a result, the presence of interphases is inevitable. In the processing of concrete, fresh and hardened states are the two distinct stages. In the fresh state, the presence of inert constituents in the cement mortar matrix only dilutes the overall potential of concrete to flow. In the hardened state the synergetics play a dominant role in strength development. When the strength of coarse aggregate is far higher than the strength levels for which the matrix or concrete is processed, interphase bonding plays a dominant role on the strength. When the matrix strength is comparable to that of the aggregate strength, in contrast, the concrete strength is affected by the aggregate strength. Besides these aspects, the effects of the size and the surface texture of coarse aggregates have also been analysed. Copyright (C) 1996 Elsevier Science Ltd.

Eu3+ (8 mol%) activated gadolinium oxide nanorods have been prepared by hydrothermal method without and with surfactant, cityl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB). Powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) studies reveal that the as-formed product is in hexagonal Gd(OH)(3):Eu phase and subsequent heat treatment at 350 and 600 degrees C transforms the sample to monoclinic GdOOH:Eu and cubic Gd2O3:Eu phases, respectively. The structural data and refinement parameters for cubic Gd2O3:Eu nanorods were calculated by the Rietveld refinement. SEM and TEM micrographs show that as-obtained Gd(OH)(3):Eu consists of uniform nanorods in high yield with uniform diameters of about 15 nm and lengths of about 50-150 nm. The temperature dependent morphological evolution of Gd2O3:Eu without and with CTAB surfactant was studied. FTIR studies reveal that CTAB surfactant plays an important role in converting cubic Gd2O3:Eu to hexagonal Gd(OH)(3):Eu. The strong and intense Raman peak at 489 cm(-1) has been assigned to A(g) mode, which is attributed to the hexagonal phase of Gd2O3. The peak at similar to 360 cm(-1) has been assigned to the combination of F-g and E-g modes, which is mainly attributed to the cubic Gd2O3 phase. The shift in frequency and broadening of the Raman modes have been attributed to the decrease in crystallite dimension to the nanometer scale as a result of phonon confinement. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. Different phases of Eu3+ activated gadolinium oxide (Gd (OH)(3), GdOOH and Gd2O3) nanorods have been prepared by the hydrothermal method with and without cityl trimethyl ammonium bromide (GAB) surfactant. Cubic Gd2O3:Eu (8 mol%) red phosphor has been prepared by the dehydration of corresponding hydroxide Gd(OH)(3):Eu after calcinations at 350 and 600 degrees C for 3 h, respectively. When Eu3+ ions were introduced into Gd(OH)(3), lattice sites which replace the original Gd3+ ions, a strong red emission centered at 613 nm has been observed upon UV illumination, due to the intrinsic Eu3+ transition between D-5(0) and F-7 configurations. Thermoluminescence glow curves of Gd (OH)(3): Eu and Gd2O3:Eu phosphors have been recorded by irradiating with gamma source ((CO)-C-60) in the dose range 10-60 Gy at a heating rate of 6.7 degrees C sec(-1). Well resolved glow peaks in the range 42-45, 67-76,95-103 and 102-125 degrees C were observed. When gamma-irradiation dose increased to 40 Gy, the glow peaks were reduced and with increase in gamma-dose (50 and 60 Gy) results the shift in first two glow peak temperatures at about 20 degrees C and a new shouldered peak at 86 degrees C was observed. It is observed that there is a shift in glow peak temperatures and variation in intensity, which is mainly attributed to different phases of gadolinium oxide. The trapping parameters namely activation energy (E), order of kinetics (b) and frequency factor were calculated using peak shape and the results are discussed. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. Results of performance measurement of a small cooling capacity laboratory model of an adsorption refrigeration system for thermal management of electronics are compiled. This adsorption cooler was built with activated carbon as the adsorbent and HFC 134a as the refrigerant to produce a cooling capacity under 5 W using waste heat up to 90 degrees C. The thermal compression process is obtained from an ensemble of four solid sorption compressors. Parametric study was conducted with cycle times of 16 and 20 min, heat source temperatures from 73 to 87 degrees C and cooling loads from 3 to 4.9W. Overall system performance is analyzed using two indicators, namely, cooling effectiveness and normalized exergetic efficiency. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Sulfur dioxide in aqueous solutions at low pH levels exists both in molecular SO2(aq) and in hydrolyzed ionic form HSO3-. Experiments indicate that only HSO3- is the reacting species in the oxidation catalyzed by activated carbon, while SO2(aq) deactivates by competing with HSO3 for the active sites of the catalyst particles. A mechanism is proposed and a rate model is developed that also accounts for the effect of sulfuric acid (product of the oxidation) on the solubility of sulfur dioxide. It predicts first order in HSO3-, half order in dissolved oxygen, and a linear deactivation effect of SO2(aq), which are confirmed by experimental data. The deactivation reaches a constant level corresponding to saturation of the active sites by SO2(aq). Activation energy for the oxidation is 93.55 kJ mol(-1) and for deactivation is 21.4 kJ mol(-1).

Troger's base was the first amine to be resolved where the chirality was solely due to very high inversion barrier around nitrogen atom(s). Though the molecule was known over a century, work done during the past one decade has shown that Troger's base and its analogues could be used as chiral solvating agents, DNA-binding ligands and for the construction of biomimetic molecular receptors and clathrate hosts, Asymmetric synthesis of Troger's base analogues has also been achieved recently, Because of the rigid, 'V'-shaped chiral nature of this molecule, there is a growing interest for use of this unit in the design of potential host systems, This review article focuses on the chemistry of Troger's base along with the possible future utilities.

To evaluate the parameters in the two-parameter fracture model, i.e. the critical stress intensity factor and critical crack tip opening displacement for the fracture of plain concrete in Mode 1 for the given test configuration and geometry, considerable computational effort is necessary. A simple graphical method has been proposed using normalized fracture parameters for the three-point bend (3PB) notched specimen and the double-edged notched (DEN) specimen. A similar graphical method is proposed to compute the maximum load carrying capacity of a specimen, using the critical fracture parameters both for 3PB and DEN configurations.
