In the present investigation an attempt has been made to develop a new co-polymeric material for controlled release tablet formulations. The acrylamide grafting was successfully performed on the backbone of sago starch. The modified starch was tested for acute toxicity and drug-excipient compatibility study. The grafted material was used in making of controlled release tablets of lamivudine. The formulations were evaluated for physical characteristics such as hardness, friability, %drug content and weight variations. The in vitro release study showed that the optimized formulation exhibited highest correlation (R) value in case of Higuchi model and the release mechanism of the optimized formulation predominantly exhibited combination of diffusion and erosion process. There was a significant difference in the pharmacokinetic parameters (T-max, C-max, AUC, V-d, T-1/2 and MDT) of the optimized formulation as compared to the marketed conventional tablet Lamivir (R) was observed. The pharmacokinetics parameters were showed controlled pattern and better bioavailability. The optimized formulation exhibited good stability and release profile at the accelerated stability conditions. (c) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Two Schiff base metal complexes Cu-SPETNNO3 (1) and Ni-SPETNNO3 (2) SPETN=2,2-propane,1,3-diylbis(nitrilomethyldyne)pyridyl,phenolate] ] with hydrogen bonding groups have been synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. In both of the compounds nitrates occupy a crystallographic general position. In 1 the lattice nitrates are on the 2(1) screw axis while in 2 they are at the crystallographic inversion center. C-HOnitrate synthons (formed by the nitrate anions and peripheral hydrogen bonding groups of the metal complexes) are non-covalent building blocks in molecular-assembly and packing of the cationic Schiff base metal complexes (M=Ni2+, Cu2+), resulting in 2-D hydrogen bonded networks. The CuCu non-bonding contact in 1 is 3.268 angstrom while the Ni-Ni bonding distance in 2 is 3.437 angstrom.

This paper deals with an experimental study of pressure-swirl hydraulic injector nozzles using non-intrusive optical techniques. Experiments were conducted to study atomization characteristics using two nozzles with different orifice diameters, 0.3 mm and 0.5 mm, and injection pressures, 0.3-3.5 Mpa, which correspond to Reynolds number (Re-p) = 7,000-45,000, depending on nozzle utilized. Three laser diagnostic techniques were utilized: Shadowgraph, PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry), and PDPA (Phase Doppler Particle Anemometry). Measurements made in the spray in both axial and radial directions indicate that velocity, average droplet diameter profiles, and spray dynamics are highly dependent on the nozzle characteristics and injection pressure. Limitations of these techniques in the different flow regimes, related to the primary and secondary breakups as well as coalescence, are provided. Results indicate that all three techniques provide similar results throughout the different regimes. Shadowgraph and PDPA were possible in the secondary atomization and coalescence regimes while PIV measurements could be made only at the end of secondary atomization and coalescence.

Lithium-rich manganese oxide (Li2MnO3) is prepared by reverse microemulsion method employing Pluronic acid (P123) as a soft template and studied as a positive electrode material. The as-prepared sample possesses good crystalline structure with a broadly distributed mesoporosity but low surface area. As expected, cyclic voltammetry and charge-discharge data indicate poor electrochemical activity. However, the sample gains surface area with narrowly distributed mesoporosity and also electrochemical activity after treating in 4 M H2SO4. A discharge capacity of about 160 mAh g(-1) is obtained. When the acid-treated sample is heated at 300 A degrees C, the resulting porous sample with a large surface area and dual porosity provides a discharge capacity of 240 mAh g(-1). The rate capability study suggests that the sample provides about 150 mAh g(-1) at a specific discharge current of 1.25 A g(-1). Although the cycling stability is poor, the high rate capability is attributed to porous nature of the material.

We report the synthesis of Pr6O11 microspheres self-assembled from ultra-small nanocrystals formed by the microwave irradiation of a solution of a salt of Pr in ethylene glycol (EG). The as-prepared product consists of microspheres measuring 200 to 500 nm in diameter and made of <5 nm nano-crystallites. The surface of these microspheres/nanocrystals is covered/capped with an organic layer of ethylene glycol as shown by TEM analysis and confirmed by IR spectroscopy measurements. The as-prepared product shows blue-green emission under excitation, which changes to orange-red when the product is annealed in air at 600 degrees C for 2 h. This change in luminescence behaviour can be attributed to presence of ethylene glycol layer in the as-prepared product. The samples were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), IR Spectroscopy (IR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Non-human primate populations, other than responding appropriately to naturally occurring challenges, also need to cope with anthropogenic factors such as environmental pollution, resource depletion, and habitat destruction. Populations and individuals are likely to show considerable variations in food extraction abilities, with some populations and individuals more efficient than others at exploiting a set of resources. In this study, we examined among urban free-ranging bonnet macaques, Macaca radiata (a) local differences in food extraction abilities, (b) between-individual variation and within-individual consistency in problem-solving success and the underlying problem-solving characteristics, and (c) behavioral patterns associated with higher efficiency in food extraction. When presented with novel food extraction tasks, the urban macaques having more frequent exposure to novel physical objects in their surroundings, extracted food material from PET bottles and also solved another food extraction task (i.e., extracting an orange from a wire mesh box), more often than those living under more natural conditions. Adults solved the tasks more frequently than juveniles, and females more frequently than males. Both solution-technique and problem-solving characteristics varied across individuals but remained consistent within each individual across the successive presentations of PET bottles. The macaques that solved the tasks showed lesser within-individual variation in their food extraction behavior as compared to those that failed to solve the tasks. A few macaques appropriately modified their problem-solving behavior in accordance with the task requirements and solved the modified versions of the tasks without trial-and-error learning. These observations are ecologically relevant - they demonstrate considerable local differences in food extraction abilities, between-individual variation and within-individual consistency in food extraction techniques among free-ranging bonnet macaques, possibly affecting the species' local adaptability and resilience to environmental changes.

Dead-time is provided in between the gating signals of the top and bottom semiconductor switches in an inverter leg to prevent the shorting of DC bus. Due to this dead time, there is a significant unwanted change in the output voltage of the inverter. The effect is different for different pulse width modulation (PWM) methodologies. The effect of dead-time on the output fundamental voltage is studied theoretically as well as experimentally for bus-clamping PWM methodologies. Further, experimental observations on the effectiveness of dead-time compensation are presented.

Space-vector-based pulse width modulation (PWM) for a voltage source inverter (VSI) offers flexibility in terms of different switching sequences. Numerical simulation is helpful to assess the performance of a PWM method before actual implementation. A quick-simulation tool to simulate a variety of space-vector-based PWM strategies for a two-level VSI-fed squirrel cage induction motor drive is presented. The simulator is developed using C and Python programming languages, and has a graphical user interface (GUI) also. The prime focus being PWM strategies, the simulator developed is 40 times faster than MATLAB in terms of the actual time taken for a simulation. Simulation and experimental results are presented on a 5-hp ac motor drive.

The present study reports a sonochemical-assisted synthesis of a highly active and coke resistant Ni/TiO2 catalyst for dry and steam reforming of methane. The catalyst was characterized using XRD, TEM, XPS, BET analyzer and TGA/DTA techniques. The TEM analysis showed that Ni nanoparticles were uniformly dispersed on TiO2 surface with a narrow size distribution. The catalyst prepared via this approach exhibited excellent activity and stability for both the reactions compared to the reference catalyst prepared from the conventional wet impregnation method. For dry reforming, 86% CH4 conversion and 84% CO2 conversion was obtained at 700 degrees C. Nearly 92% CH4 conversion and 77% CO selectivity was observed under a H2O/CH4 ratio of 1.2 at 700 degrees C for the steam reforming reaction. In particular, the present catalyst is extremely active and resistant to coke formation for steam reforming at low steam/carbon ratios. There is no significant modification of Ni particles size and no coke deposition, even after a long term reaction, demonstrating its potential applicability as an industrial reformate for hydrogen production. The detailed kinetic studies have been presented for steam reforming and the mechanism involving Langmuir-Hinshelwood kinetics with adsorptive dissociation of CH4 as a rate determining step has been used to correlate the experimental data.

Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) is an effective extension of NDE to reduce down time and cost of Inspection of structural components. On – line monitoring is an essential part of SHM. Acoustic Emission Techniques have most of the desirable requirements of an effective SHM tool. With the kind of advancement seen in the last couple of decades in the field of electronics, computers and signal processing technologies it can only be more helpful in obtaining better and meaningful quantitative results which can further enhance the potential of AET for the purpose. Advanced Composite materials owing to their specific high performance characteristics are finding a wide range of engineering applications. Testing and Evaluation of this category of materials and SHM of composite structures have been very challenging problems due to the very nature of these materials. Mechanical behaviour of fiber composite materials under different loading conditions is complex and involves different types of failure mechanisms. This is where the potential of AET can be exploited effectively. This paper presents an over view of some relevant studies where AET has been utilised to test, evaluate and monitor health of composite structures.

A porous layered composite of Li2MnO3 and LiMn1/3Co1/3Ni1/3O2 (composition: Li1.2Mn0.53Ni0.13Co0.13O2) is prepared by reverse microemulsion method employing a soft polymer template and studied as a positive electrode material. The precursor is heated at several temperatures between 500 and 900 degrees C. The product samples possess mesoporosity with broadly distributed pores of about 30 nm diameters. There is a decrease in pore volume as well as in surface area by increasing the temperature of preparation. Nevertheless, the electrochemical activity of the composite increases with an increase in temperature. The discharge capacity values of the samples prepared at 800 and 900 degrees C are about 250 mAh g(-1) at a specific current of 40 mA g(-1) with an excellent cycling stability. A value of 225 mAh g(-1) is obtained at the end of 30 charge-discharge cycles. Both these composite samples possess high rate capability, but the 800 degrees C sample is marginally superior to the 900 degrees C sample. A discharge capacity of 100 mAh g(-1) is obtained at a specific current of 1000 mA g(-1). The high rate capability is attributed to porous nature of the composite samples. Mesoporous quaternary bioactive glasses and glass-ceramic with alkali-alkaline-earth oxide were successfully synthesized by using non-ionic block copolymer P123 and evaporation induced self assembly (EISA) process followed by acid treatment assisted sal-gel method. As prepared samples has been characterized for the structural, morphological and textural properties with the various analytical techniques. Glass dissolution/ion release rate in simulated body fluid (SBF) was monitored by inductively coupled plasma (ICP) emission spectroscopy, whereas the formation of apatite phase and its crystallization at the glass and glass-ceramic surface was examined by structural, textural and microscopic probes. The influence of alkaline-earth oxide content on the glass structure followed by textural property has become more evident. The pristine glass samples exhibit a wormhole-like mesoporous structure, whereas the glass-ceramic composition is found to be in three different phases, namely crystalline hydroxyapatite, wollastonite and a residual glassy phase as observed in Cerabone (R) A/W. The existence of calcium orthophosphate phase is closely associated with the pore walls comprising nanometric-sized ``inclusions''. The observed high surface area in conjunction with the structural features provides the possible explanation for experimentally observed enhanced bioactivity through the easy access of ions to the fluid. On the other hand, presence of multiple phases in glass-ceramic sample inhibits or delays the kinetics of apatite formation. (C) 2013 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
