The Gibbs energies of formation of three compounds in the PbO-Al2O3 system—2PbO · Al2O3, PbO · Al2O3, andPbO· 6Al2O3—have been determined from potentiometric measurements on reversible solid-state galvanic cells [dformula Pt, Ir | Pb, alpha-Al[sub 2]O[sub 3], PbO [center-dot] 6Al[sub 2]O[sub 3] | ZrO[sub 2]-CaO | NiO, Ni | Pt] [dformula Pt | NiO, Ni | ZrO[sub 2]-CaO | Pb, PbO [center-dot] 6Al[sub 2]O[sub 3], PbO [center-dot] Al[sub 2]O[sub 3] | Ir, Pt] and [dformula Pt | NiO, Ni | ZrO[sub 2]-CaO | Pb, PbO [center-dot] Al[sub 2]O[sub 3], 2PbO [center-dot] Al[sub 2]O[sub 3] | Ir, Pt] in the temperature range 850–1375 K. The results are discussed in the light of reported phase diagrams for the PbO-Al2O3system. The partial pressures of different lead oxide species, PbnOn, n = 1–6, in the gas phase in equilibrium withthe aluminates are calculated by combining the results of this study with the mass-spectrometric data of Drowart et al.(1) for polymerization equilibria in the gas phase. The concentration of oxygen in lead in equilibrium with the aluminatesare also derived from the results and the literature data on the Gibbs energy of solution of oxygen in liquid lead.

The tie-lines delineating equilibria between CoO-NiO and Co-Ni solid solutions in the ternary Co-Ni-O system at 1373 K have been determined by electron microprobe andedax point count analysis of the oxide phase equilibrated with the alloy. The oxygen potentials corresponding to the tie-line compositions have been measured using a solid oxide galvanic cell with calcia-stabilized zirconia electrolyte and Ni + NiO reference electrode. Activities in the metallic and oxide solid solution have been derived using a new Gibbs-Duhem integration technique. Both phases exhibit small positive deviations from ideality; the values ofG E/X 1 X 2 are 2640 J mol−1 for the metallic phase and 2870 J mol−1 for the oxide solid solution.

The limiting solubility of oxygen in liquid nickel in equilibrium withα-alumina and nickel aluminate has been measured by inert gas fusion analysis of suction samples in the temperature range 1730 to 1975 K. The corresponding oxygen potential has been monitored by a solid electrolyte cell consisting of calcia stabilized zirconia as the electrolyte and Mo + MoO2 as the reference electrode. The results can be summarized by the following equations: log(at. pct O) = \frac - 10,005T + 4.944 ( ±0.015)log(atpctO)=T−10005+4944(0015) % MathType!MTEF!2!1!+-% feaafiart1ev1aaatCvAUfeBSjuyZL2yd9gzLbvyNv2CaerbuLwBLn DmO2 /4.606RT = log P O2 1/2 = \frac - 13,550T + 4.411 ( ±0.009)O24606RT=logPO212=T−13550+4411(0009) From simultaneous measurements of the potential and concentration of oxygen in melts, not in thermodynamic equilibrium with alumina and aluminate phases, information on the composition dependence of the activity coefficient and the standard free energy of solution of oxygen is obtained. For the reaction, $\frac{1}{2} O_2 \to \underset{\raise0.3em\hbox{$Missing close brace ΔG o = -72,930 - 7.11T (±840) J gr.at.–1 = + 0.216 at. pct OlogfO=T−500+0216atpctO where the standard state for dissolved oxygen is that which makes the value of activity equal to the concentration (in at. pct) in the limit as concentration approaches zero. The oxygen solubility in liquid nickel in equilibrium with solid NiO, evaluated from thermodynamic data, is compared with information reported in the literature. Implications of the results to the deoxidation equilibria of aluminum in nickel are discussed.

The equilibrium solubilities of the solids in supercritical carbon dioxide (SCCO(2)) are considerably enhanced in the presence of cosolvents. The solubilities of m-dinitrobenzene at 308 and 318 K over a pressure range of 9.5-14.5 MPa in the presence of 1.13-2.17 mol% methanol as cosolvent were determined. The average increase in the solubilities in the presence of methanol compared to that obtained in the absence of methanol was around 35%. A new semi-empirical equation in terms of temperature, pressure, density of SCCO(2) and cosolvent composition comprising of 7 adjustable parameters was developed. The proposed model was used to correlate the solubility of the solids in SCCO(2) for the 44 systems available in the literature along with current data. The average absolute relative deviation of the experimental data from the model equation was 3.58%, which is better than the existing models. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Precoding for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna systems is considered with perfect channel knowledge available at both the transmitter and the receiver. For two transmit antennas and QAM constellations, a real-valued precoder which is approximately optimal (with respect to the minimum Euclidean distance between points in the received signal space) among real-valued precoders based on the singular value decomposition (SVD) of the channel is proposed. The proposed precoder is obtainable easily for arbitrary QAM constellations, unlike the known complex-valued optimal precoder by Collin et al. for two transmit antennas which is in existence for 4-QAM alone and is extremely hard to obtain for larger QAM constellations. The proposed precoding scheme is extended to higher number of transmit antennas on the lines of the E - d(min) precoder for 4-QAM by Vrigneau et al. which is an extension of the complex-valued optimal precoder for 4-QAM. The proposed precoder's ML-decoding complexity as a function of the constellation size M is only O(root M)while that of the E - d(min) precoder is O(M root M)(M = 4). Compared to the recently proposed X- and Y-precoders, the error performance of the proposed precoder is significantly better while being only marginally worse than that of the E - d(min) precoder for 4-QAM. It is argued that the proposed precoder provides full-diversity for QAM constellations and this is supported by simulation plots of the word error probability for 2 x 2, 4 x 4 and 8 x 8 systems.

Phase relations in the systems SrO-Y2O3-CuO-O2 and CaO-Y2O3-CuO-O2 at 1173 K were established by equilibrating different compositions in flowing oxygen gas at a pressure of 1.01 × 105 Pa. The quenched samples were examined by optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive analysis of X-rays (EDAX), and electron spin resonance (ESR). In the system SrO-Y2O3-CuO-O2, except for the limited substitution of Y3+ for Sr2+ ions in the ternary oxide Sr14Cu24O41, no new quaternary phase was found to be stable. The compositions corresponding to the solid solution Sr14−xYxCu24O41 and the compound SrCuO2+δ lie above the plane containing SrO, Y2O3, and CuO,displaced towards the oxygen apex. However, in the system CaO-Y203-CuO-O2 at 1173 K, all the condensed phases lie on the plane containing CaO, Y203, and CuO, and a new quaternary oxide YCa2Cu306.s is present. The quaternary phase has a composition that lies at the center of the nonstoichiometric field of the analogous phase YBa2Cu307_~ in the BaO-Y203-CuO-O2 system. The compound YCa2Cu306.s has the tetragonal structure and does not become superconducting at low temperature. Surprisingly, phase relations in the three systems CaO-Y203-CuO-O2, SrO-Y203-CuO-O2, and BaO-Y203-CuO-O2 are found to be quite different.

An isothermal section of the phase diagram for the system Nd-Pd-O at 1350 K has been established by equilibration of samples representing 13 different compositions and phase identification after quenching by optical and scanning electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction, and energy dispersive analysis of x-rays. The binary oxides PdO and NdO were not stable at 1350 K. Two ternary oxides Nd4PdO7 and Nd2Pd2O5 were identified. Solid and liquid alloys, as well as the intermetallics NdPd3 and NdPd5, were found to be in equilibrium with Nd2O3. Based on the phase relations, three solidstate cells were designed to measure the Gibbs energies of formation of PdO and the two ternary oxides. An advanced version of the solid-state cell incorporating a buffer electrode was used for high-temperature thermodynamic measurements. The function of the buffer electrode, placed between reference and working electrodes, was to absorb the electrochemical flux of the mobile species through the solid electrolyte caused by trace electronic conductivity. The buffer electrode prevented polarization of the measuring electrode and ensured accurate data. Yttria-stabilized zirconia was used as the solid electrolyte and pure oxygen gas at a pressure of 0.1 MP a as the reference electrode. Electromotive force measurements, conducted from 950 to 1425 K, indicated the presence of a third ternary oxide Nd2PdO4, stable below 1135 (±10) K. Additional cells were designed to study this compound. The standard Gibbs energy of formation of PdO (†f G 0) was measured from 775 to 1125 Kusing two separate cell designs against the primary reference standard for oxygen chemical potential. Based on the thermodynamic information, chemical potential diagrams for the system Nd-Pd-O were also developed.

Phase relations in the system Cu-Eu-O have been determined by equilibrating samples of different average composition at 1200 K and by phase analysis after quenching using optical microscopy (OM), x-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive x-ray (EDX). The equilibration experiments were conducted in evacuated ampoules and under flowing inert gas and pure oxygen. The Cu-Eu alloys were found to be in equilibrium with EuO. The higher oxides of europium, Eu3O4 and Eu2O3, coexist with metallic copper. Two ternary oxides CuEu2O4 and CuEuO2 were found to be stable. The ternary oxide CuEuO2, with copper in the monovalent state, can coexist with Cu, Cu2O, Eu2O3 and CuEu2O4 in different phase fields. The compound CuEu2O4 can be in equilibrium with Cu2O, CuO, CuEuO2, Eu2O3, and O2 gas under different conditions at 1200 K. Thermodynamic properties of the ternary oxides were determined using three solid-state cells based on yttria-stabilized zirconia as the electrolyte in the temperature range from 875 to 1250 K. The cells essentially measure the oxygen chemical potential in the three-phase fields: Cu+Eu2O3+CuEuO2, Cu2O+CuEuO2+CuEu2O4, and Eu2O3+CuEuO2+CuEu2O4. The thermodynamic properties of the ternary oxides can be represented by the equations: $\begin{gathered} {\raise0.5ex\hbox{$Couldn't find \end for begin{gathered} Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) studies in Ar+O2 mixtures confirmed the results from emf measurements. An oxygen potential diagram for the system Cu-Eu-O at 1200 K was evaluated from the results of this study and information available in the literature on the binary phases.

Although Pb(Zr1−XTiX)O3 solid solution is the cornerstone of the piezoelectric ceramics, there is no information in the literature on thermodynamic activities of the component phases in the solid solution. Using inter-crystalline ion exchange equilibria between Pb(Zr1−XTiX)O3 solid solution with cubic perovskite structure and (Zr1−YTiY)O2 solid solutions with monoclinic and tetragonal structures, activities of PbTiO3 and PbZrO3 in the perovskite solid solution have been derived at 1373 K using the modified Gibbs–Duhem integration technique of Jacob and Jeffes. Tie-lines from the cubic solid solution are skewed towards the ZrO2 corner. Activities in the zirconia-rich (Zr1−YTiY)O2 solid solutions are taken from a recent emf study. The results for the perovskite solid solution at 1373 K can be represented by a sub-regular solution model:View the MathML sourcewhere ΔGE,M is the excess Gibbs energy of mixing of the cubic solid solution and Xi represents the mole fraction of component i. There is a significant positive deviation from ideality for PbTiO3-rich compositions and mild negative deviation near the PbZrO3 corner. The cubic solid solution is intrinsically stable against composition fluctuations at temperatures down to 840 K. The results contrast sharply with the recent calorimetric data on enthalpy of mixing which signal instability of the cubic perovskite solid solution.

Saplings of forty nine species of trees from Western Ghats forests were planted on a 1.5 hectare tract of Deccan plateau (in the campus of Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore) and their performance monitored for 23 years. The objective was to evaluate their adaptability to a habitat and conditions apparently alien to these species. The study was also meant to understand the linkages of these trees with the surrounding environment. Contrary to the belief that tree species are very sensitive to change of location and conditions, the introduced trees have grown as good as they would do in their native habitat and maintained their phenology. Further, they have grown in perfect harmony with trees native to the location. The results show that the introduced species are opportunistic and readily acclimatized and grew well overcoming the need for the edaphic and other factors that are believed to be responsible for their endemicity. Besides ex situ conservation, the creation of miniforest has other accrued ecosystem benefits. For instance, the ground water level has risen and the ambient temperature has come down by two degrees.

In order to understand the influence of ductile metal interlayer on the overall deformation behavior of metal/nitride multilayer, different configurations of metal and nitride layers were deposited and tested under indentation loading. To provide insight into the trends in deformation with multilayer spacings, an FEM model with elastic-perfect plastic metal layers alternate with an elastic nitride on top of an elastic-plastic substrate. The strong strain mismatch between the metal and nitride layers significantly alters the stress field under contact loading leading to micro-cracking in the nitride, large tensile stresses immediately below the contact, and a transition from columnar sliding in thin metal films to a more uniform bending and microcracking in thicker coatings.

In this paper, we address the design of codes which achieve modulation diversity in block fading single-input single-output (SISO) channels with signal quantization at the receiver. With an unquantized receiver, coding based on algebraic rotations is known to achieve maximum modulation coding diversity. On the other hand, with a quantized receiver, algebraic rotations may not guarantee gains in diversity. Through analysis, we propose specific rotations which result in the codewords having equidistant component-wise projections. We show that the proposed coding scheme achieves maximum modulation diversity with a low-complexity minimum distance decoder and perfect channel knowledge. Relaxing the perfect channel knowledge assumption we propose a novel channel training/estimation technique to estimate the channel. We show that our coding/training/estimation scheme and minimum distance decoding achieves an error probability performance similar to that achieved with perfect channel knowledge.

Most homodimeric proteins have symmetric structure. Although symmetry is known to confer structural and functional advantage, asymmetric organization is also observed. Using a non-redundant dataset of 223 high-resolution crystal structures of biologically relevant homodimers, we address questions on the prevalence and significance of asymmetry. We used two measures to quantify global and interface asymmetry, and assess the correlation of several molecular and structural parameters with asymmetry. We have identified rare cases (11/223) of biologically relevant homodimers with pronounced global asymmetry. Asymmetry serves as a means to bring about 2:1 binding between the homodimer and another molecule; it also enables cellular signalling arising from asymmetric macromolecular ligands such as DNA. Analysis of these cases reveals two possible mechanisms by which possible infinite array formation is prevented. In case of homodimers associating via non-topologically equivalent surfaces in their tertiary structures, ligand-dependent mechanisms are used. For stable dimers binding via large surfaces, ligand-dependent structural change regulates polymerisation/depolymerisation; for unstable dimers binding via smaller surfaces that are not evolutionarily well conserved, dimerisation occurs only in the presence of the ligand. In case of homodimers associating via interaction surfaces with parts of the surfaces topologically equivalent in the tertiary structures, steric hindrance serves as the preventive mechanism of infinite array. We also find that homodimers exhibiting grossly symmetric organization rarely exhibit either perfect local symmetry or high local asymmetry. Binding of small ligands at the interface does not cause any significant variation in interface asymmetry. However, identification of biologically relevant interface asymmetry in grossly symmetric homodimers is confounded by the presence of similar small magnitude changes caused due to artefacts of crystallisation. Our study provides new insights regarding accommodation of asymmetry in homodimers.
